This museum is huuuge! Take time if you want to properly visit all the galleries. It's awesome that if you take one of their packages you have access to visiting for 7 days. Being the type that admires every piece individually it took me about 3 days hahaa. Also the staff is very kind and helpful, thanks to the great lady in the European section that encouraged me to take pictures of whatever I like - you don't see that everyday!

A lot of beautiful things to see. Some of the European Art Gallery was unavailable. I think some of the rooms have a strange wall colour (red, purple) or lighting choice in the Medieval Art section, but other than that, it should be seen by all who come to Bucharest.

Very beautiful art museum with many gorgeous works of art. They even have a Monet which I was surprised to find tucked away in this gem of a museum. It was a very large museum as well with two different sections: one of Romanian artists and one of European artists. Had some nice modern art mixed in as well. Overall, definitely good value for what all you get to see! They also have elevators if you need them.

Can you give me the possibility to add some stars to my review? This museum is unbelievable, more that impressive, more than exceptional, it's a testimonial about the Romanian old and new beautiful arts - sculpture, painting, collage, tapestry, iconography, religious and historical artifacts and so on. I think that I've stayed there three, maybe four hours but, as I've told you, it deserved each second! I'm speechless and I make serious efforts to write something about my experience - a great opportunity to spend some time in a very pleasant way, believe me!

So worth the visit. I saw both the European and Romanian galleries! Beautiful collections of sculptures, paintings, and religious icons. I spent three hours but I could have easily spent two more hours. Romania is amazing and has a lot to offer.

PROS: Affordable Two Museums in One Location A lot to see CONS: Other than ONE Employee, Lawrence, staff appeared disinterested, and were on their cell phones There is NO Guide available, which is unbelievable for a National Museum. There are signs for a guide by App, but we couldn't get this to work This museum has so much potential in my opinion. If there was a guide ( like every other museum I have been to), it would have made such a difference. All in all, I had a good experience

Impressive museum and very surprising. It comprises two buildings (one for European art and another one for Romanian) with an amazing collection of artworks from Dutch, Spanish, French and Italian masters (such as Luca Giordano, Alonso Cano, El Greco, Tintoretto, etc.) and also numerous religious objects from Orthodox Christianity which are centuries old, brought from different parts of the country. In addition, we can see paintings from important Romanian artists, from the 19th century onwards. Highly recommend visit for art lovers. It is a huge museum, so take at least 2-3 hours to enjoy it.

Located in downtown this is a very nice museum to visit. I recommend both Romania and European art wings, please be aware that they have separate entrance and you will need to pay for both. The cost to visit the museum is 20 Ron.... Also after the visit there quite a few restaurants near by and close to it there is Cismigiu park

The Romanian art is beautiful, plenty of space to explore. Can take a couple of hours, maybe more. I don't believe the building was design for a museum so it can be a little annoying climbing up a central stairway to keep going up the floors to explore the place. Also the building is divided into two sides. The Romanian arts on the right side, and the European side on the left, separate tickets to enter.

There are 3 parts to the museum, it is very worth buying them all, the air is warm in the place of the paintings so it is worth taking a bottle of water with you. The most beautiful palace and worth a visit.

Very nice palace! worth to visit! I only saw the European Exhibition and I want to come back for the Romanian Exhibition and The Throne Room. I was also with my kids, but not their style because most of the European paintings were with religion themes.

The pictures I added are only from the European Art section. I'll write another review for the Romanian Art section, which I am in awe of. I really enjoyed the European Art museum, especially the fact that they had a copy of a painting (first picture) sculpted to be able to be felt by people whose sight is limited (see the second picture). I'm glad some museums find ways to be inclusive. Personally, my favorites were the sculptures that evoked human emotions very well. The paintings were either oil paintings or acrylics, and I'm glad there was a wide variety in terms of the century they were drawn in, as well as the style (Medieval, Renaissance, Impressionism, Surrealism). Make sure to consult the website, as they close certain parts of the expositions quite often to add/remove paintings that are transported to international art museums. Also, I don't recommend going when there is a public holiday day in Romania. It will most likely be very crowded and I don't find it very enjoyable to go to a museum with high traffic, as I feel the need to rush. The photography fee only applies to (semi-)professional photography devices. Either way, flash is not allowed by anyone, since it damages the internal structure of the paintings. I approached the oldest ones, and I can tell you some of their canvas/painting were clearly deteriorated by time. Let's make an effort together and keep the treasure of art intact for as long as possible, no matter where it is and who made it.

Three sections to this fine and well-presented fine art museum. We loved it. Three hours is probably enough, but take your time. Tickets are easily available on entry. Convenient and free coat check. A must see in Bucharest!

A must! I was delighted to find that the Romanian art was extraordinary. Considering their history, Romanian artists should be more well known, as so much of it was moving. We also visited the European art wing. Some very fine offerings of the Renaissance movement and a good opportunity to view. My favorite was the palace museum in the middle. It reflected the pride of Romania during the monarchy, and the unfortunate changes in the gardens behind the palace made by Ceausescu under Communist rule. I would highly recommend all three museums housed in this palace. Each were unique and well worth it.

The National Museum of Art of Romania is made of three sections. The national gallery (Romanian art), the European art gallery( French, Spanish, Dutch and italians paintings), and the Royal Place, which used to be a home of the Royal family before communism. The ticket for all museum sections cost 60 RON. The overall experience was amazing. Great collections of arts and sculptures. A must go to place in Bucharest. One thing i must mention about the old ladies in the European art gallery, they are very friendly and helpful. I was about to miss the French collection, but one lady told me that I missed it.

Very beautiful building, great visit for anyone interested in art. The interior is great to see too, a few marble staircases etc. The Romanian history wing was nice and a bit more dynamic as it had different types of artefacts that were pretty impressive. However in July, inside it was so stuffy and hot. No air flow or fresh air. There were fans and portable airco’s that did nothing unless you stood right in front of them. It ruined the experience. You had to ask for a small brochure with map and it cost 1 lei. There are enough bathrooms. And there are curators in each room if you have questions.

We visited the Historical section of the museum. The architecture alone makes it such a worthwhile visit when in bucharest. The information boards were really interesting and detailed in explaining the history behind the paintings as well. It was a shame there was no English translation for the information but they do offer tour guides for a cost. Overall it is a short but very fascinating experience.

A retrospective of Romanian art from the medieval beginnings in the form of wood crafts and religious paintings to modern sculptures and representations of the life of a Romanian peasant. Additionally, the museum is well divided in different parts. Besides the Romanian wings, it includes a wing with European schools of art (German,Austrian,Italian,French, Spanish and Dutch) which have have some pleasantly surprising artists. Be careful to buy the full pass ticket that includes both Romanian and European art if you want to see them both.

Large and interesting collection of Romanian art and adjoining European gallery, well worth seeing. Particularly enjoyed art from ancient monasteries pulled down by Ceausescu. Friendly staff. Negatives are that this place does not accept credit cards or euros for ticket payment and has woeful gift shop. A guided tour would be great but none available apparently.

We went Sunday, around 11:00. There were not many visitors. The museum is divided in two main sections: Romanian and European art, with two or more temporary exhibitions. There is a variety of pieces of arts, mostly paintings and scuptures; some of them are truly representative for Romanian culture. We recommend this museum, as the entrance fee is really small for students, even free for arts students.

There are a lot of paintings, clothes, ornaments and other things of christian theme. Definitely give it a visit if you're into this kind of things. Multiple different schools are represented on different floors so you can feel the difference. Among the other things, Spanish school space is very hot. Literally. Not sure if paintings are feeling better in a climate similar to a home one :)

The third door from the left is where they preserved the palace as it was, other doors lead to museums now. And there is an amazing painting (not sure it is the right name) on the ceiling of the palace! The man working at the entrance to the palace part was very kind and friendly, spoke English very well unlike in other parts of the museums, told us about the history of the palace. It was definitely our favorite part! We got tickets for all three museums: 40 lei adult ticket and 10 lei student ticket. We got tickets at the ticket office behind the first door on the left right before entering and they work for 7 days. The paintings in other doors also deserve some attention. Plan at least 2,5 hours for this place if you want to see the paintings, sculptures and clothes in other halls as well!

We only had time to visit one museum/gallery during our weekend in Bucharest and with so many to choose from, we were worried we’d choose wrong. We didn’t! This building and all its contents are absolutely mesmerising. We spent over two hours looking at all of the paintings and sculptures and didn’t even feel the time pass. Security guard was also very nice directing us where to put our bag and when I got lost in the modern art exhibition a kind employee redirected me, which I’m thankful for because I had started at the end! The flow of the gallery is amazing too so much thought and time has gone into it and the building itself, even down to the colours they chose for the walls of each different time frame or artist were exquisite. We bought a ticket that gave us entry into all three museums (national, modern and European) for 40 lei (about £14) so it was also amazing value for money. Definitely worth a trip if you’ve got the time!

Initially, we went to the museum to visit what was the royal palace of Bucharest and most people seemed to go for that reason. If you are in the same situation get the ticket for the European art gallery which is inside the palace whilst the Romanian one is across the street. The collection is fine, nothing exceptional, but not too scarce. The best pieces present there are a "Rembrandt" and an "El Greco". Amazing student discount reducing entry to 4 Lei only.

They do not have a pos machine so you can’t pay by credit card. Also a brochure or catalogue even if someone has to pay for it would be nice. Lighting on paintings needs to be refined and set differently. Some works were badly lit.

Impressive museum where the only thing you'll ever lack of is the time! It is a huge place full of masterpieces and interesting cultural treasures showing greatness of Romania and of mankind whenever we wanna create beauty and succeed it. It is a food for brain and pleasure for the eyes, a place where to go is a duty, to discover the craftmanship of those who came on earth before us and left their relics as prints of their art and knowledges. It is simply to enjoy and the museum in itself, the architecture is beautiful and only makes you wanna stay longer within its walls. Personal is kind, helpful and skilled.

For both of them the thickets must be purchased from the european exhibit part of the castle. The only thing that bothered me was the lighting. (Translated by Google) The National Museum of Art in Bucharest has in its patrimony one of the largest collections of paintings in Romania. It was founded in 1948, having an important collection of King Carol I, initially located at Peles Castle in Sinaia as well as in other halls of the Romanian royal residences. Another part of the exhibits was brought from the Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu, from other museums in Bucharest such as Anastase Simu (founded in 1910), the Museum of Dr. Ioan and Nicolae Kalinderu (inaugurated in 1909) as well as from private collections. In addition to these exhibits, the museum collection from the collection of the first art museum in Bucharest, established in 1836 in the building of a school of the Saint Sava Monastery at the initiative of the painter Carol Valenstein, was also attracted. [1] Since 1948, the National Museum of Art occupies the building of the Royal Palace in Bucharest, built in 1937. Today, the museum has over 70,000 separate exhibits in two main directions: the National Gallery, which contains the works of the best Romanian painters (Ion Andreescu, Theodor Aman, Nicolae Grigorescu, Gheorghe Petrașcu, ...) and the European Art Gallery.

Today we visited The Romanien Medieval Art Gallery. Over 900 icons, mural paintings, embroideries, manuscripts, silverware, woodcarvings, many of them unique, amply survey Romanian art from the 14th – to the early 19th century. Items on display showcase developments in Moldavia, Wallachia and Transylvania, reflecting the intricate manner in which a traditional Byzantine layer blended in Oriental as well as Western influences to generate original local art forms.

Be aware that you need to pay for street parking!! This museum boasts a beautiful collection of classic 19th-20th century artists (1800-1950s) and some interesting 13-15th century artifacts/art from Christian antiquity, but lacking in more contemporary and other eras. The staff could have been friendlier as well. One “guard” was very rude and insisted that I not charge my phone on an open outlet…something we were very confused by considering there were guards in other rooms doing this exact thing, and the room we were in had a plentitude of outlets. The outlet I chose to use was purposefully far away from any artworks as well. We were also shooed away when we tried to visit the museum store (I would have loved to purchase a museum catalogue). Regardless, I highly recommend visiting this museum. Start at the top floor and work your way down.

I always love Museums of Art and this one was no exception. Its the country’s prime holder of Romanian, European and Oriental art, and its located in the former Royal Palace of Bucharest. It includes the National Gallery (Romanian medieval and modern art) and the European Art Gallery. Apart from numerous temporary exhibitions, visitors can also join guided tours of the former Throne Hall and other spaces of historical relevance. If you do not have the time for the rest, at least visit the National Gallery once you are in Romania.

Liked the buildings and the paintings, specifically the architecture of the Modern Art Gallery was easy to follow and had interesting collections. Some of the galleries need some good air conditioners. It can be a bit annoying when some of the curators (if I'm not mistaken) follow you to make sure you don't touch anything!

I like the temporary exhibitions lately. It costs 20 RON. This summer the paintings of Nicolae Grigorescu (1838 - 1907) are displayed. He was the founder of the modern Romanian painting. Beside his paintings, he was also a beautiful man - as I was told and saw in some photos. His portraits are all filled with melancholy (this is how I feel them), but in the eyes of his subjects there is also hope, life, innocence - marked by a little white dot in the irises of the girls he painted. Most of the frames on his paintings were ordered by him from France. My paintings from home have similar frames, so they remind me a lot of childhood and peace. The well known "Car cu 4 boi" aka "Car(ul) cu boi" was so much bigger than expected. I have a little copy at home which gave me the impression that the original shouldn't be much bigger. Nicolae Grigorescu had a white ox called Ghiocel - meaning Snowdrop. He did a lot of sketches and paintings with him, but these are back to the memorial museum in Câmpina. There are some photos (ex. Iosif Berman's) from that time and also costumes and traditional items from his period which also displayed the rural life of Romania in the passage between the XIXth century and the XXth. Why do I give 4 stars: because on some paintings the lights above make a shadow on them. No postcards with his paintings - in general, few postcards at the entrance. Nicolae Grigorescu's paintings left me with at least two things that come to me off the top of my head: - the more grounded understanding of the progress all people made in a 100 years - I feel like what he painted is true and corresponds with what I see in people: a kind of beauty that will never fade away. It reminds me at the same time of Nicolae Steinhardt's translation of Baudelaire's words: "Frumusețea nu este altceva decât făgăduința fericirii" - "Beauty is nothing but the promise of happiness".

Inside this impetuous historical building, art enthusiasts can visit some delightful art galleries., since it hosts the Romanian National Art Museum. Positive: beautiful art of incredible value. Negative: it would be nice to be able to visit also the rest of this majestic building, not just the areas dedicated to the art expositions. Suggestions: No! Recommend: yes!
