NO mobile fons..great...love it...Agressive shouting by bar staff at a foreign visitor texting with sound off...not impressed with. You make your own bad Karma in this world and last night you made plenty. Having a rule is one thing...how its enforced is another and how u treated a visiting tourist last night as witnessed by the entire bar was both uncalled for and actionable.I hope someone takes you on soon. What goes around ...comes around.Hospitality?...you might want to look that word up..but I have a feeling you don't care...given the arrogance and hostility you demonstrated last night. The famous Hi B Cork pub ...where hostility is their version of hospitality...Have a nice day..because you obviously need one!

If you are in Cork City centre make your way to the General Post Office in Oliver Plunkett Street, cross the street and head upstairs to the Hi-B Bar. It apparently got its name because of the ancient Hibernian Hotel which years ago was located here. At the top of the stairs before you enter the door on the right you know you are about to go back in time as the sign on the door states “No mobile phones allowed. Please talk to each other”. On opening the door you enter a tiny bar which is surreal - not so much a place as an experience. Full of character and craic, it is probably the friendliest pub in Cork city. Because of its size (max capacity probably 40) it is an intimate space where you can engage any and all in conversation. Songs by artists such as Luke Kelly and Christy Moore are played as backgrouind music and don't be surprised if on occassion all the customers decide to accompany the singer and burst into song with them. A step back in time, there is always a blazing fire, a cold pint of stout and story to be heard at the Hi-B. If you are only going to visit one pub in Cork the Hi-B has to be at the top of your list where you can enjoy a unique experience while having one of the best pints in the city.

It's one of the most different places I've ever been, and also, one of the most simple as well. You can't use your phone there, you need to talk to each other and engage in a deep conversation without the digital friend of ours. At first, I was a little bit hesitant about this. I am so used to being connected to my phone all the time that it felt strange to be without it. But after a while, I started to relax and enjoy the experience. I found that I was actually able to have better conversations with the people I was with. The bartender is one of the best in the world hahaha, welcoming, smiling and open to talking, although he's working.

Literally found myself outside the Hi-B and noticed the door was open! Sure how could I resist a first visit to such an institution. Happy to keep my phone in my pocket and chat at the bar too. I'll be back.

Uniquely authentic. (photo's not allowed so you'll have to imagine it or go there!)

Great experience. Telephone calls or voice messages are not allowed in the pub. There was no loud music either. People just talked at a normal volume. Jack, the barman for the evening did a great job. He had good tips about whiskey and a great, unexcited manner. Just for Jack: May I have a little sniff? :)

Come here, now, look. The Hi-B is the absolute pinnacle of Irish pub culture. Eccentric locals, improvised performances, you name it. There is no another place like it. Come for a pint, stay 20 years in Cork. It’s that good.

Aww this place! We were told about it but a local. It felt like we were in someone's living room. Very cozy. Interesting conversations with local people. No usage of phones! Everyone enjoys a beer and talks!! Great place.

Brilliant, just like sitting in your front room! No mobile phone rule, which meant everyone were talking to each other, really enjoyed it. And even videoed it, but got reprimanded!! 😂🤣😂😘

Best pints of Guinness in the City. Impeccable. Great buzz in the bar, one to visit and then return to.

Enjoyable experience. Upstairs and its like going into someone's front room, going back in time. Very friendly and it's all about having the conversation and no mobile phones.

Small cozy bar with a great bartender. Would have missed it if we hadn't been led there by a friendly local. Lovely experience! Thank you Arthur!!

A bar with a truly family feeling. Both bartender and musicians are within arm’s reach, you get to know them and chat to them. Great selection of Irish stout as well.

Me and my 2 colleagues were looking for a nice bar to have a quite drink , when we asked for a drink we were greeted by a slap head of a bald man who shook his head to say we would not be served. To say I was outraged was an understatement! The absolute audacity of the bald man was apauling and quite frustrating. When we arrived there was a woman playing cards and the ignorant bald man stared us down on arrival, perched up on his high ledge of an ego. Clearly compensating. I digress! All in all a piss poor experience

We traveled all over Ireland for a few weeks & this was hands down the best pub experience we had. It's tiny so you talk to literally every person in the place. The musician who performed when we were there was amazing & knew how to work a room.

Old school bar. Excellent beer and whiskey. Very friendly atmosphere. Don't talk on your phone. Talk to the person standing next to you. It's much more entertaining. Don't visit Cork without visiting this bar . That's an order.

Totally in love with this places. Because there are no mobile phones allowed, I end up talking to strangers each time. Fantastic!!

I recently visited a bar and was extremely disappointed with the service. The barman, who was bald, refused to serve my friends and I, who are all 25 years old. He didn't provide any explanation and simply asked us to leave. It was a frustrating and unacceptable experience and I would not recommend this bar to others.

A throwback to another time! It's like being in someone's living room. A great atmosphere is guaranteed and it's wonderful place to strike up a conversation with a stranger!

Best Guinness I've had outside of the confession box in Dublin. Unique atmosphere with no TV or phones as distraction

Great little bar, always the first place we go to when visiting Cork each year! Love the no phones policy...one of the guys behind the bar was a bit unhelpful not carrying over our pints of Guinness as I has my hands full ....hopefully he'll learn to be more customer friendly soon. It won't stop us returning as it's the place not the staff that make this our No.1 place to go :)

Been going to the Hi B on and off for about 15 years. Everyone knew about the grumpy owner who didn't like phones. A lot of time has passed and now the phone thing, which was never as big a deal, is being enforced in an exaggerated way by the kids that work there who scream at you if they see you take out your phone, backed up by a load of people that admit they've never been there before who are just taking part in the nasty pantomime of screaming at their target. Calm down and stop making the place an unpleasant caricature of what it used to be.

A unique experience, its more like a lounge in an old house then a bar. Its very old retro style and a throw back to the 70's, its a must see bar when in Cork

I was there on the 3rd of august. It is a really nice pub and the live music playing was fantastic. The musician was very talented and lovely, he really made the atmosphere. I also lost my ring there and they were nice enough to send it back to me!

👍👍 Awesome place to grab a bite to eat and have a nice drink or three in downtown Cork. I had the fish and chips and the wife had the lamb stew...they were both perfect. Service was first rate and I'd highly recommend heading to the bar for a talk with the experts on a food whiskey choice! You cant...

👍 Crazy good prices on food and beverages. You sacrifice attentive service, but everyone I talked to there was pleasant and helpful. The food was good and there were actually a number of beers that I have not seen elsewhere in the Cork area. I would not say this is a must do if visiting from abroad, b...
