Staff are friendly and helpful. Good location close to all the fun party places, plenty of which are nearby the hostel itself. Good atmosphere downstairs, rooms were pretty clean and plenty of outlets and space. Wee bit loud at night, bed were just okay. Worth it for the money and location.

The Brú is an absolutely brilliant place to stay. Friendly staff, clean rooms, fair prices and free breakfast! The only downside: it can be quite loud on weekends, since some rooms are directly above the bar. The bar itself is awesome to hang out later in the day and to check out local musicians. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely come again!

Very clean but basic hostel as you would expect from the price. It's good that breakfast is included as well and this is toast or cereal which was perfect for me and saved us a lot of money. Kitchen is well stocked with pans and cutlery etc if you want to cook for yourself and you have a bar right there. There are some great pubs and restaurants on the street which are great for going in the evening with a short walk back to the hostel. Excellent location in general. My only complaint is noise from the bar but it stops at midnight every night.

The room was ok, we had a good reception from the staff, the breakfast was on the downside, but besides that everything was good. Great quality/price, though. Be aware that there are music concerts and the entrance is a bar, so come with your own ear plugs if that bothers you.

The hostel is very nice, safe and peaceful. Employees are polite and respectful. I really enjoyed my time here. Definitely ideal for travelers on a limited budget! 💚 I will only mention a few things in the room that I was not satisfied with and that caused me to deduct 1 star. First: The height of the bottom bunk is definitely too short. I measured this. Just 65-67 cm (25-26 inches) from the mattress on the lower bed to the bottom of the upper bed, that's a ridiculous number for an adult. I'm 170 cm (5'7" inches) and sitting upright is impossible for me. I definitely have a backache here and banged my head many times. I have to stand up or sit on the floor to drink water. Second: Also, the mattresses and pillows of the bed are not comfortable at all, I think they need to be changed. I think in general, these bunk beds should be replaced with adult bunk beds because I'm pretty sure these are for kids. Third: The suction power of the toilet flush in the rooms is not strong. I may have to flush it 5-8 times to get rid of the mess completely and when I asked the people in the room everyone said they had the same problem. I think this should be taken care of too.

Location is perfect. Had booked online. Due to high demand I had to book 4 rooms on four different days. Hence 11am checkout and 2pm check-in everyday was a bit of a headache. On the very first day I met Shannon from the reception and she was very helpful, allotted 4 days continuously under the same room. It was really helpful. Also you have a spacious kitchen, light breakfast included in the booking and it's clean. Most recommended budget friendly accommodation within the heart of cork city.

We had a 3 night stay last weekend. The rooms were okay, however the bar and staff were excellent. We had two "court sessions" involving 33 of us in the bar area and the staff were very understanding of our taking over the place for and hour or so each time. The location was also excellent. If budget is important then you can't go wrong with Bru Bar & Hostel. Highly recommend. Rooms were okay. Clean, etc. Showers were a little nippy but everything else was great.

Noisy (pub downstairs & street noise). Bare. Uncomfortable mattresses. Miserable breakfast offering (*instant coffee is NOT coffee). We had a terrible night sleep and were happy to leave. -- Cheap rates & great staff, though.

Pocket friendly accommodation at the heart of the city. The vibe at the bar downstairs was also quite upbeat, rooms were also very clean. The only con was the room size and amenities provided. Could’ve provided some table/towels in the room cuz I felt a bit cramped.

Stayed here for their hostel and it was nice. Staff were really kind, the bar was fun & their kitchen is spacious. Our room was nice and had what we needed but the shower door was broken and wouldn’t close which was super annoying while showering. Only stayed for a night.

Fantastic location, slow but ok service. The toilet paper is almost transparent and gets sick in the dispenser, and the shower system is a bit of a nightmare if you have longer hair. Otherwise not bad. Meh breakfast. Outstanding location though.

It was a nice pub. Great location. Fair price. Rooms could do with some investment though. Lick of paint here and there. But it was clean, staff were friendly and helpful. I'd go again for the price

I stayed at bru bar and hostel for 4 nights in mid-October and had a fabulous time. Easy check-in, clean bedroom and bathroom. I stayed in a mixed 4-bed dorm, and felt very safe (as a young female solo traveller). I met 3 awesome girls in my room and we enjoyed the bar downstairs. I stayed over the weekend but didn’t find it too noisy at all. Location was brilliant and I was satisfied with the small but sufficient breakfast. Beds were a tad hard and rooms were small but a very clean and safe option for a few nights. Overall, I had a great experience! Would recommend!

Loved the bar and the location. Edit: Since the business requested for an elaborate review. I had to cancel my reservation for the last day of my stay and was told at the person at the reception that the amount would get credited to my account automatically whereas the refund had to be manually given back at the time of cancellation (As per what manager mentioned later on) After multiple follow ups, when I pointed out that it was a mistake on their end with regards to giving back the refund immediately, the manager mentioned "its not their job". I mean, that does not even make sense, if it isn't their job then whose job is it!? In case you are going to take the feedback constructively, I believe the staff at reception needs to be more courteous to the guests, which I think is not asking for a lot!

I got to the hostel from the bus stop easily, the street has a lot of good bars and restaurants. I was in a room of 4 with a shower and toilet. The shower was not comfortable. Our room was located next to a hostel facility that makes a lot of noise and until 4 (when the noise stopped) I could not sleep. In addition there was a feeling that every little thing like keeping things or a towel costs money, it is not possible to keep things in the hostel (except for a fee). Except for the location I was not very enthusiastic.

The hostel is alright, especially due to it being so central and pretty affordable. The rooms are small, or at least our room and there is one locker per person under the beds (keep in mind only a small suitcase will fit there and if you want to have it secured you need to get a padlock). As it was on the third floor and it being Summer, it was rather warm and there was no flow of air. Everything was clean and the shower was alright as well. There is a kitchen which, at times, smelled awful (maybe because of some type of food in the fridge), and a TV room. Breakfast is also provided and even though it's just cereal, toast (jam and nutella), tea and coffee, it's pretty good so you can save on spending outside (it was never really crowded). Then, keep in mind that it's a hostel and a bar, they'll play music until 11 more or less. Still, would recommend it.

The location is fantastic, the staff are lovely! It’s so handy having a pub in your hostel! The beds were fine, proper hostel style sleeping arrangements. My main issue was with my roommates. There was a group of 8 fellas that would constantly come and go throughout the night, they all kept their luggage in my room which made it even smaller. I was trying to sleep and they all came in and out of the room about 10 times each. Other than that, the place was fab!

This is a friendly place in a very convenient location in Cork. Live music every night in the bar, very pleasant. The downs are the 'cages' under the beds to lock your stuff in, small rooms, and the old facility, but overall its a nice place to stay on a budget!

Felt right at home! Aiofe the manager was very hospitable and very efficient, and a special thanks to the sweet Wilnia who was super friendly and made me feel like family! The rooms were cleaned everyday, and there's entertainment every night. Get a noise cancellation headphone and eye mask if you do not wish to be disturbed by your roommates (who may walk in and out) , but most of them are considerate. Will definitely visit again! Love it 💛

Location was great. The rooms were below average and customer service was decent. The whole place smells like cigarettes (even though there are no smoking flyers all around). Perfect for a quick overnight but nothing more.

Good hostel in overall. If they just didn't lied to me changing me the room saying me there were a group (as if it was my problem but we buy) when it was not true I would give it 5 stars. Pub it's okay. You have offer on pints from 5-8 pm and also live music from 9pm everyday and music bingo on Thursdays.

I slept here and not even words could describe the amazing experience I had. The customer service was out of this world. They also have a bar downstairs, which is pretty cool. In addition, the bar attendants were very polite and easy to have a chat with. They were even happy to allow me to leave my luggage after check out. I truly enjoyed my stay here and I highly recommend this place to everyone.

DO NOT STAY HERE!! There is not even hot water for your shower! Beds are hard as stones. The "Breakfast" only has bread. They don't even provide towels, charge 5 Euros for a towel. They use push taps in the shower. Every press on the button will give you 5 seconds of water, (cold) and you will have to keep pushing it in order to shower. After I've checked out, they charged me extra 5 Euros without any explanation. The bar downstairs plays music every night until 1am. Even for a person who likes nightlife such as me, it's too much. It was tuesday night and I needed to catch an early bus the next day. Not getting any sleep. The walls are paper thin so you hear everything. The "hostel" reception is next to the bar and sometimes you have to wait for a long time for anyone because the staff will tend to bar guests first. The funny thing is, the price is not even cheap! My friend found a B&B just 20 minutes from there that charged 60 Euros with full free Irish breakfast. AVOID this place if you can.

Very good overall. Staff is very nice and kind, would try to help me with any questions I had or when asking for recommendations. The rooms and hostel is a bit old. But all the basics and minimum is provided, what you’d expect for the price and a hostel. Stayed in a mixed dorm, there weren’t any other spots left, I’d recommend booking in advance. The bar downstairs had a very nice atmosphere, closed around 12, it was a Monday. Mix of locals and people from the hostel, very nice it was open mic night. Cheap, drinks and food, compared to Dublin.

It's in a great location. 5min walk from both the train & bus station. I'm a,local and enjoy my few pints here. Here is a wacky idea buy the old garda station next door and expand the amount of beds and lease out the front area to another bar/restaurant to pay for the building over the years. Just a random idea if u get me.

Very cute Hostel in the middle of cork so everything is reachable by foot. The staff is very friendly, the bar is cute and has live music, there’s a small breakfast included (enough to start you for your day). If you book a private room you even get a private bathroom which when we arrived was very clean! Same as our room! And there’s a shared kitchen you can use. The only issue I have is that there’s construction going on outside the hostel at night currently (idk for how much longer), so it’s very very noisy from 12am to idk how late in the morning. This is ofc not the fault of the hostel, it’s just if you prefer a good nights sleep maybe look for a quieter place (or bring very good earplugs haha because even if the construction isn’t here the street outside is still a main street and there is still a bar downstairs so the name is program or how you say :D). Just a little heads up for anybody coming!

We had booked the hostel for 3 nights. Unfortunately our flight was cancelled and we were scheduled to flight the next evening. We sent an email to the hostel that we were not able to check in the first night, but that we were coming the day after and wanted to stay for 2 nights. We did not get a reply back, but thought it was okay since we emailed. When we arrived at 11PM, the employee told us the system automatically deletes bookings when people do not show up. Somehow they do not look at their emails. They told us (laughing) this happened to people that same day as well, so it is a reoccuring problem. Every hostel or hotel was fully booked and our room was given to other people, even though we had already paid an amount and sent an email. The employee told us we could sleep in their kitchen, but he could not do anything else for us (not even trying to help us call other hotels or hostels). We slept on the couch and the ground and had to wake at 7AM because the kitchen would open to the guests. We could use the toilet in the bar, but had to ask the night guard to open the door to the bar. We were not able to use a shower and they did not have any cushions or blankets, only some sheets and they turned on the heating "so that we would not be cold during the night". The next day we got our money back, which they told us the night before was not an option. I would definitely NOT recommend staying here. It was their system's fault, but they did not take any blame and made it our problem, not even helping us find another place to stay. It was the most horrible experience I have ever had in a hostel.

I can only review the hostel since I never did the bar. The actual hostel was just alright, clean enough. What ticked me off was this little green light in my room that was way to bright and kept me up, part of the fire alarm or something. Breakfast was just toast and cereal.

I was there in September & thought it was an amazing place: quite friendly & well situated.. (only 5min walk from town centre, loads of pubs in the same street & bus station is only min away, which is quite practical when you arrive by plane). - the price was a bargain, mainly when you compare to Cork hotels, which are ridiculously expensive & really posh !! - I only stayed there for 2nights, but really enjoyed that time: it was clean, with a communal area & a big kitchen. Even managed to meet another French girl while I was over there. haha 😄. Loved it 💕

After my stay was completed and i had checked out - and delayed a little at the bar with a relaxing pint of Murphy's - one of the staff contacted another hostel, Sheila's to let them know that I had been "kicked out". Sheila's then informed me via email that my booking with them was cancelled as a result of contact from someone at Bru. I felt bullied and deceived. Dishonest and unprofessional management in place here. Very uncomfortable place to stay in winter season because of poor central heating also.

I was on a solo trip and I booked an individual double room, the toilet was outside the room, I already knew that when I booked it but it wasn't as I expected it to be. The hostel has a pub downstairs (by night I was expecting some irish music but they had house music so it was a bit of a bummer) and from my room I didn't hear anything so that's good, the receptionists are busy with the pub but friendly and helpful. The hostel doesn't have an elevator, so if you have a room on the 2nd floor be prepared to use the stairs with your suitcase. The room was very clean but veeery small, and outside my window there was a big extractor that made a very loud noise from 9am to 9pm. Also I had to close my private toilet outside the room with the key because I was told that other guests could sneak in, no problem with that but gave a general feeling of insecurity. Noise in the corridor at night, but it's a hostel so it's normal. The hostel is very close to the bus station and to the center but I'd say that it's not the best street of Cork, a bit dodgy. Summing up: hostel was clean, staff was friendly, but the rooms are very small and the breakfast is quite small too, no elevator, price-quality ratio definitely not up to standards. I wasn't very happy with the room given and the general vibe, but I guess that it depends on what you're looking for in a hostel.

  • 2/5 Brad H. 1 year ago on Google
It was a good value for the location. It was difficult to enjoy my stay because it was a particularly busy weekend and they kept the party going until 2:00 - 2:30am every night with people sitting outside yelling until 3:00 or 3:30am. It shook our room because we were directly above the bar. If I was still in my early 20's that probably would have been fine because we would have also been out but at this point, we had traveled so much and were so worn out it turned out to be sort of a nightmare situation. They warned us that this would be the case but a warning right after you check in isn't very helpful since there wasn't anything we could do about it. I have nothing bad to say about the service and the staff was great. I just think it is the type of place for someone in a specific age group or who doesn't have anywhere else to go. The staff was great and the facilities were good. It was just impossible to sleep for me.

The room 205 was not the best. The window handle was loose. Not every outlet USB port was working. Etc. But it is really central and good to reach. The breakfast also is good.

It's okay, a very 'middle of the road' hostel experience, you'll find better and you'll find worse than Brú. There are very few other hostels options in Cork unfortunately, this is probably the best of the lot. The rooms are relatively modern for an older building, no A/C as far as I could see so expect it to be hot during summer. It was clean and the bedsheets, while well worn, were comfortable and clean. My main issue, and I've had this happen on two occasions when I stayed at Brú, was being put in a shared dorm with long-tern guests. These other guests have a large amount of personal belongings in the small room, and spend a lot of time there. There is a housing shortage in Ireland so unfortunately people do turn to hostels for somewhere to live. But, guests staying one night should really be in rooms with other tourists staying 1 or a few short nights.

Cheaply priced hostel but you get what you pay for. Beds very uncomfortable, no proper mirror in the room. Street noise & people talking / emptying bins / clattering outside in the back of hostel started very early in the morning (after 7am) & was extremely loud right outside our window. The shower was a push button shower so kept turning off, the water was extremely hot so meant you had to keep running in & out from under it. Staff were excellent, very helpful & it’s great there is a light breakfast included for such a cheap price

Get what you pay for. Bar is cool but rooms leave some to be desired. They could invest more in their hostel accommodation but I don’t think that’s what they’re model is. Booking for a one or two nighter is fine. Cheers.

The room was OK, but the toilet seat and shower door were broken. I asked if they could repair or change the toilet seat, and they offered to move us to a different room. The new room was directly above the bar and very noisy, so we stuck with the original room. Staff could have been a bit more friendly, but they weren't rude or unpleasant.

I didn't stay here but did drink in the bar. Had a surprisingly good pint of Guinness. The staff were good except for the woman with the faded blue hair and poor choice tattoos. Found her very rude and lacking in basic manners. Other than dealing with her it was a positive experience.

The hostel itself is not bad, the location is very good and every bedroom has a private bathroom. However, there are some points for me that consequently lower the evaluation: -No Wi-Fi on upper floors (I was in room 307), buy a repeater please - Inability to adjust the jet and heat of the shower -Why if I already pay the hostel, do I have to pay separately to be able to keep my bags in a safe place before and after check in? I have never seen such a thing in any other hostel -No air filters in the bedroom

A small group of us go to Brú approx once every 6 weeks.(not for accommodation). Always feel very welcome and staff brilliant. Prices reasonable and some food offerings which I haven't sampled yet. We had a small party here last Sunday and we were allowed decorate an area at the back of the bar. As it's usually Sunday afternoons, there is a wide variety of musicians e g. Fiona Tierney(fab unique singer), Jorge Kachmari (fab sax) and "The Underscore Orkestea" playing various incl Hot Jazz, Swing, Blues Balkan & Klezmer. Magic. Cosmopolitan clientele. Mixture of locals, backpackers, multi national tourists. Highly recommended in the Victorian Quarter of Cork, right in the centre of things.

Best hostel in Cork. Unlike Sheila's here you have the opportunity to get a good night's sleep. The vibe is chill and friendly. Plus It's very easy to make new friends in the common area. The staff is great and they're always ready to help you out. Also the rooms are quite clean and having an ensuite bathroom is a great idea. Highly recommended for your stay in Cork.

Booked here for a friends hen party and it was perfect. Rooms are basic but clean! Staff were all super friendly, helped organise us taxis etc. and the hostel bar was great craic! Location is also great and was in walking distance of most pubs and restaurants. Highly recommend!

Hostel is in a good location. Breakfast is basic but OK. They put a family with small children into the only room above the bar directly above the Stage for their live music. Heater did not work the first night but they said it ist timer based. Complained again the Seconds night, suddently IT was functional. The window in our room was not closing right, so street noise was louder than the bar and we had outside temperatur. Wanted to close the doors to the common area, as our room was adjacebt and it was noisy, but that was not allowed as it is a common area. Did not understand that, staff was offending in the end. Would not recommend the hostel and would not stay there again.

Always an interesting low key gig here, even on a miserable cold and wet November night.

The room and bathroom itself was fine, clean enough. It was in an okay location. I backpacked through Ireland for two weeks and this hostel had the worst bed, by far. It feels like I was sleeping on a rock. This was also the only place I stayed where my roommates were completely inconsiderate of others in the room. Coming in loudly in the middle of the night (clearly with people who were not staying in the hostel at all). Getting up and letting their male companions come in early on the morning when one of the girls was changing. While in Cork, I stayed one night here and one night at Kinlay House. 100% a better experience at Kinlay, all around. I'd definitely stay at Kinlay over Brú any other time I'm in Cork.

By far the best hostel experience I have had so far in Ireland! The facilities are very clean and easily accessible. The room I stayed in was nicely set up, had a cage for my belongings, plug in by the bed, hangers for coats, a decent bathroom with a warm shower, and the bed wasn't bad. The TV room was nice to sit and relax in, and the kitchen had everything I needed for food prep. And it's above a bar with live music, so that's nice too!

(Translated by Google) Bar renowned especially for the live music that is played there almost daily. The atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly and many beers and drinks are available in a very nice bar. A little eccentric to other places, still quite accessible even on foot, and you can easily spend a whole evening there.
