This monument in Casement Square commemorates those who died in the British ocean liner, RMS Lusitania, the Lucy as she was nick-named and at the time the world's largest passenger ship, a ship which on 7th May 1915 while nearing the end of her 202nd crossing, bound for Liverpool from New York, was torpedoed off the Old Head of Kinsale County Cork, Ireland, by a German U-boat during World War I, with the deaths of 1198, of the 1959 passengers and crew aboard, 128 of which were American citizens. Many of the victims were brought to Cobh and many are interred in the Old Church Graveyard near Cobh town. The Lusitania monument depicts two fisherman who went to the rescue of the ill fated liner. Over them is the Angel of Peace. Additional to the Lusitania Memorial, there is a Lusitania Wall of Remembrance erected on the east boundary wall of the car park on the west side of the Cunard Centre (the former Cunard Line office), on the Promenade at West Beach. This is in remembrance of the survivors and victims of the RMS Lusitania disaster that were brought ashore on 7th May 1915.

Sort of a forgotten episode in history. The Titanic seems to take all the attention, and WWI is the forgotten war. It even took to 1970 to complete this statue. It would be nice to see more Lusitania history, but this is a nice memorial.

It is with humble respect that the people of Great Island guard the graves of this act of terrible murder. The Kaiser was Victoria's grandson and after his dear Grandma died became awfully xenophobic and began to build up the Navy. What a pointless war. Remember too the many Irish who died in the trenches in foreign uniform. They died for our freedom. We will never forget them

It's an important memorial but was lost in all the other things going on in Cobh. I didn't see a signpost from the seafront whereas the statue to Sonia O'Sullivan was very prominent.

If you know the story of the Lusitania, this will be a great place to visit. A beautiful memorial to all that perished. This lies in a picturesque square in Cobh (Formerly Queenstown) I love history, so naturally this was a must see.

A well maintained memorial to all of those who died in 1915 with thie sinking of the ship. It has a small noticeboard with some details on it for those who are not familiar with the story. Well kept and litter free, the town obviously care for this place. Not worth a trip in its own right, but if in Cobh, then very much worth a visit.
