A moving spot to visit. You feel the historical weight of this place. A hero to the nationalist, a terrorist to unionists... either way, well worth a visit, especially after watching the movie, ‘Michael Collins’ 22nd August 1922

It was great to finally get to see this place but was disappointed that there was no museum.Like most of Ireland's history it's left to disappear

I learned about Michael Collins when I was in secondary school in the 70s. I always wanted to visit Béal na Bláth in West Cork. I have visited this memorial to "The Big Fella" on many occasions. It is beautifully maintained and well worth a visit. Ar dheis dé go raibh a anam.

Tbh while this can be somewhat of an emotional place to visit, given it’s historical relevance and sensitivity and the fact that a decent man was murdered there, the setting is somewhat underwhelming. Think of it more as a gravestone on the side of the road and unfortunately there is little to explain it’s significance to the casual passer-by. That said there are other, more comprehensive memorials to Michael Collins and his legacy in nearby Clonakilty.

Worth a visit if you are a fan of Michael Collins or Irish history. It has been a century since he died,so now is a good time to visit.

I have visited this site quite a few time before, but on my most recent visit I was blown away with the new layout of the monument. It is a lovely site to visit with easy access for all and good parking close by. I'm betting young Michael C has a big smile on his face. Well done all concerned with developing this wonderful monument into what it is. If you happen to be in the area it is well worth a visit, and maybe a little prayer for the man himself.

To visit this site has been on my bucket list for over 30 years. Love him or hate him, Michael Collins’ impact on the Nation of Ireland cannot be denied. To visit this spot was surreal. The peacefulness of the site today as opposed to the violent encounter that occurred over a century ago was surreal. As a lover of Irish history this place was a must see and it did not disappoint.

Eerie and lonely. Take a moment to reflect on one of Irelands saddest moments in history.

(51.8300111, -8.8436931) in my view this is where the ambush had taken place. According to interviews of some of those who were with Collins on the day, the had came through Béal na Bláth and were just outside the village of crookstown. This is where we found expended rifle casings 8 years ago, the area is covered in them. It’s 1.8 kilometres outside the village and I’m sure with today’s metal detectors you can rule out the location of the memorial. I don’t recommend amateur treasure hunters turn up with metal detectors either because you can get in serious trouble.

On the day we visited, by chance, we met one of the team of architects responsible for the memorial. A lovely young lady who took time to explain in detail the events of 22 08 1922 & point out the important locations on the hills. A visit to the museum in Kilmurry is also a must. As is a visit to Emmet Square Clonakilty to Michael Collins House museum & exhibition.
