We
were
advised
to
visit
this
hospital
after
speaking
with
a
very
sweet
&
helpful
representative
with
my
22
year
old
nephew
who
had
been
drinking
3-5
high
percentage
beers
daily.
We
proceeded
after
noticing
how
great
the
overall
reviews
were,
believing
all
Doctors
here
would
have
patients'
best
interest
at
heart.
We
were
wrong!
During
my
nephews
visit,
It
appeared
that
Dr.
Christine
Pack
was
more
inclined
to
rely
on
specific
visible
evidence
of
a
need
for
detox
&
his
self-assessment,
(which
was
made
while
he
was
still
in
denial
about
his
problem.)
to
determine
any
needs
for
additional
treatment
OR
merely
professional
advice.
Relying
heavily
on
his
verbal
assurances,
rather
than
conducting
a
comprehensive
evaluation
(outside
of
general
testing
for
physical
attributes
of
withdrawal.)
Which
one
in
particular
we
mentioned
were
signs
of
extreme
irritability
due
to
being
unable
to
get
a
drink.
This
approach
neglects
the
importance
of
professional
observation
&
listening
to
responses
to
probing
questions,
which
could
reveal
underlying
issues.
Addiction
is
a
complex
&
often
deceptive
condition.
The
signs
&
symptoms
can
be
subtle,
&
addicts
may
not
always
be
forthcoming
about
the
severity
of
their
problem.
It
is
the
responsibility
of
healthcare
professionals
to
discern
the
truth
through
careful
observation
&
probing
questions,
especially
when
the
patient
is
in
denial
&
at
minimum,
provide
professional
advice
around
the
impact
an
alcohol
addiction
could
have
on
his
body.
The
rep
who’d
referred
us,
advised
by
perhaps
getting
permission
to
talk
with
the
doctor
&
getting
my
nephew
to
admit
some
of
the
alarming
things
he’d
revealed
regarding
his
alcohol
struggle,
she
would
be
more
thorough
with
looking
further
into
the
details
of
his
potential
needs.
He’d
even
acknowledged
events
abt
36
hrs
before
when
he
left
a
friends
party
on
foot
in
an
unfamiliar
neighborhood,
to
which
we’d
been
searching
for
him
for
over
an
hour.
He
found
him
later
after
having
fallen
asleep
in
a
complete
strangers
yard
at
12am.
He
would
answer
my
general
question,
literally
explaining
his
use
of
alcohol
to
help
him
cope
with
deeply
rooted
traumas.
Instead
of
Dr.
Christine
Pack
providing
professional
advice
based
on
his
new
admissions,
she
simply
turned
to
him
&
advised
“I'm
not
going
to
force
you
to
do
anything
you
don't
want
to
do”.
Dr.
Christine
Pack
literally
avoided
addressing
any
of
his
clear,
alcohol-dependent
answers
&
strictly
advised
him
she
would
not
force
him
to
do
anything.
When
I
asked
additional
questions
regarding
what
the
facility
offers
based
on
the
information
he’d
revealed
in
her
presence,
she
responded
with
extremely
short
&
dismissive
answers,
appearing
annoyed.
Then
proceeded
to
reiterate
to
my
nephew,
“We
can’t
force
you
to
do
anything.
What
would
you
like
to
do?”
This
question
was
her
primary
focus,
in
spite
of
his
acknowledging
emotional
&
mental
dependence
on
the
alcohol.
Unfortunately
she
would
go
on
to
continuously
repeat
that
she
cannot
force
him,
(which
by
the
way,
was
by
NO
MEANS
what
we
were
asking.)
It
is
important
to
note
my
nephew
came
to
this
facility
voluntarily
after
the
rep
from
this
facility
did
more
than
the
Dr.
Christine
Pack,
in
helping
him
recognize
a
potential
problem
too
dangerous
to
ignore.
He
was
still
in
denial
but
willing
to
be
educated
further
by
going
to
treatment.
However,
once
the
Dr.
Christine
Pack
literally
advised
him
he
was
good
to
go,
he
followed
her
“professional”
opinion.
We’d
hoped
through
her
experience
she’d
be
aware
that
oftentimes
patients
are
more
receptive
to
a
Doctor,
than
family
when
encouraging
a
decision
to
face
a
reality
they’re
struggling
to
accept.
The
Dr
can
provide
more
insight,
without
illegally
forcing
them
to
commit
to
treatment.
Dr.
Christine
Pack's
primary
concerns
were
legalities,
with
ZERO
interest
in
advising
him
of
potential
dangers
if
his
dependency
continued
untreated.
I
fear
how
many
other
families
&
patients
were
sent
home
or
ill-informed
of
potential
dangers
after
explicit
admission
to
using
substances
to
cope
with
emotional/mental
trauma.
