Great hike on the 5 mile loop. Moderate. Parking is a lot right off 7 Lakes Drive-no fee. The shelter is a bit off the loop. We did the West Mountain Shelter loop. Went counterclockwise up the 1977 trail to yellow, down blue trail.

Great shelter, with a beautiful view of the river. If you are lucky enough to get a clear day and occupy the lean-to, the view is up there with the best in the park. You can see Haverstraw and with a keep eye, you can make out points of the city in the distance. It is a sold 3 mile hike to make it to this point from Anthony Wayne. If you get there too late and the lean-to is occupied, there are plenty of areas around this site to set up shop and take in the outdoors for an overnight camp.

Can host a good amount of people inside the shelter, with ample tent space nearby. If planning on building a fire, be prepared to search around for firewood or bring some with you. Views from the shelter towards NYC are excellent, as were sunrise and sunset views.

A nice shelter to stay at with a great view of the Hudson and on clear days the city skyline. Can be busy at times and there is no easily accessible water source till you get down the mountain.

Beautiful views of the city skyline and the Hudson River. No privy or water sources, but nice primitive campsites.
