(Translated by Google) A whole story around the Place du Souvenir, ex Place des Martyrs located in the city of Cotonou, Benin in the Haie vive district. In the early morning of Sunday January 16, 1977, a plane landed unexpectedly at Cotonou airport. The "Operation Shrimp" against Marxist-Leninist President Mathieu Kérékou has started. Moments later, a group of around 80 heavily armed African and European mercenaries unload mysterious crates. Very quickly, the first cannon and mortar shots rang out around the current site of Benin Marina Hotel, Cotonou International Airport and the Ghézo military camp. In a deep voice from Radio Bénin, Lieutenant-Colonel Mathieu Kérékou, calls on the people of Benin to defend the homeland by the means at their disposal in these terms: "Thus, a group of mercenaries in the pay of the hard-pressed international imperialism, launched since this morning at dawn an armed aggression against the heroic Beninese people and their democratic and popular revolution by attacking the city of Cotonou. …) Consequently, each militant and militant of the Revolution in Benin wherever he is, must consider himself and behave like a soldier at the front, engaged in a sacred fight to save the homeland in danger ”. The general alert is thus given throughout Cotonou. Aware that their response will depend on the future of the country's democratic and popular revolution, the populations of Cotonou and the Beninese army will contain the attackers during three hours of fighting by using machetes and clubs against cannon fire. At 10 a.m., the attackers decided to begin a strategic withdrawal towards the airport and quickly boarded the plane with still roaring propellers in the direction of Franceville in Gabon. [...]

This is a place of great history. It reminds every single citizen of our country how great our elders were. Their courage and bravery, their patriotic spirit and their willingness to make the world a better and safer place. It's very important to keep places like this alive in order to remind future generations of who they are.

Very important souvenir place. A must if you visit Cotonou. You can come across interesting shows, get some fresh air or play sports there. But sometimes there are crazy and random restrictions. You can be prohibited from going up when there is no work... in short, Benin and its sense of organization and communication. To review.

A must see place if you are in Cotonou! It's not far from "Maître Tchang" who makes the best kebabs and roasted meat in the city. They are also ice-cream and waffles places around. Great to take pictures and a relaxed brunch. Enjoy! Beware of mosquitoes from 6pm..

(Translated by Google) It is a particularly relaxing place and full of history at the same time. You have just under the building a mini gallery where Beninese art objects are on sale. On the esplanade you have a creperie and a sandwich stand with seating. So you can go there with friends and enjoy good moments of relaxation. There are also public benches arranged here and there with many trees for shade.
