I came here one time a couple weeks ago on a Friday night and it was so awkward:/ I read great reviews and saw some nice pictures and thought I’d come in for a drink with a friend. Well we came inside and it was dead silent. We got a couple of drinks and sat down by the fireplace, but what made it awkward was the bar tender. I think he had his girlfriend over and they were talking for a bit then they started making out for a long while at the bar near where the the front door is. It was so gross and awkward because we can hear them in the dead silence of the bar. Like there was not another soul in the bar beside them and my friend and I. So weird… a couple of other people came in maybe 45 mins later, they stopped making out, she left and then the bar tender turned on some music. Ugh it’s was a painfully awkward experience. If it wasn’t for that I would have left a much better review because the bar itself was really nice such as, the furniture, the fireplace, and it was just a cozy looking spot.

Lovely quaint old pub near Birr Castle, well worth a visit. We were golfing in the area and dropped in for a few drinks after. Friendly staff and locals, great decor...high ceilings, old prints on the walls, ornate lighting...a real gem of a pub!

Extremely thankful for the amazing service provided by Clodagh and her team on the night of our engagement party. Couldn't do enough for us in the weeks leading up to it and was the most fantastic hostess throughout the evening. Would recommend to everyone looking to throw an event in the area.

So many good memories at the chestnut both at family/friends events and organized events for vintage week and offline film fest. Always good fast service, loads of seating indoor and outdoor and plenty of choices of what to have to drink. Can't wait to return soon!

The chestnut bar is by far one of the nicest and cleanest pubs around. It's cosy and welcoming atmosphere makes you sit back and relax. You can really enjoy the chats with the friendly staff and the delicious creamy pints. There cocktails is undoubtedly the best in birr and the massive beer garden and live music on weekends really gets the crowds going. The pub offers both the calm and relaxing tones Inside while still knowing how to throw a party outside. Highly recommend especially during vintage week.

What a cool pub! I hosted the Day 2 of my wedding here and it was perfect! The owner, Clodagh, was so thoughtful and helpful- setting us up in the private, covered terrace with it's own bar, heaters and a pool table. Great selection of drinks, fab cocktails and we even got to play our own playlist over the speakers. We had organised catering from New Order Social District, which was delicious! All in all, it was a relaxed and fun day, The Chestnut is such a great place for a party!

We had the celebrations for the second day of our wedding here and couldn't recommend it more. Clodagh was so helpful from the beginning, helping us with music, food and games or whatever you want. The place looked beautiful and Clodagh gave us the freedom to decorate however we wanted. All our guests loved the place. Staff so helpful and of course great drinks. Definitely a cool spot for a party, or even just for drinks when in Birr :)

This bar has culture,& boasts tradition yet it is current and on trend. It caters for music lovers, sports enthusiasts, walkers and private parties. Staff are well trained and there's a good selection of events on there.

πŸ‘ We had a pleasant experience at J.J.Hough. It's a pretty standard rural Irish pub, but had live traditional Irish music that wasn't all that common in our tour down River Shannon. Will recommend it for an Irish experience.
