As of July 2021 the Capitol Grounds are open! Beautiful, well manicured grounds with stunning views of both the Capitol Building and the National Mall. West Lawn: great views down the mall, overlooking the Washington Monument and the National Mall. Best spot for photos in the evening, and great place to watch the sunset. At the end of the lawn is the capitol reflecting pool. Provides great photos of the capitol reflecting in the water. East Lawn: paved area with iconic steps leading up to each chamber. This is also the primary entrance for visitors to the Capitol at the Capitol Visitors Center. Best spot for photos in the mornings. North/South lawn: beautiful gardens and shady sidewalks. Note the walk around the capitol is very steep. Tip: you can reserve tickets to visit the Capitol with the Capitol Visitors Center or reach out in advance to your representatives for a more intimate tour of the Capitol. If you did not arrange a tour in advance you can stop by any Congressional office to pick up chamber passes. These passes will get you into the building and allow you to sit in the chambers and watch the proceedings. You will not have a guide but will be able to be in the building on your own.

Well worth taking the time to visit. You can pretty much walk around the entire outside of the Capitol anytime. Likewise, I highly recommend taking a tour of the inside of the Capitol. (I'd arrange that through your congressman or senator's office as you'll get a more personal tour).

Fantastic place to walk and explore. The buildings are majestic and the grounds beautiful. Watch for criminals as it is DC and politicians aren't the only ones there who want to rob you lol. Seriously, crime in DC is typical liberal city crime... bad, bad, bad. However, the capital grounds are safer than other areas.

It's my first time here, the United States Capitol is the best place I have visited here in Washington DC. Here the people explain to us how the Capitol was designed and why they designed it for. It is spectacular, I saw many statues of the most important people of the history of UnitedStates. There are some amazing paintings too. Looking at the roof of the Capitol is a painting of Gorge Washington, and the design of the capitol inside is so amazing.

You should visit this amazing place at least once in your life! You can reserve a guided tour on line, but when I wanted to do it, everything was taken. Then, we went anyways, made a line of about 30 minutes and then we were able to get in! Absolutely for free We loved it! So much history and information to process and a very beautiful place to see. Employees are nice and very well prepared for any questions. Little store for nice souvenirs and a restaurant if you are hungry. Highly recommended!

A powerful experience to see the place where the laws of this country are debated and created. Although entry is closed to the public right now, you can still walk up to this historic and beautiful structure and take photographs.

So lovely to walk around the Capital! Definitely something I felt accomplishment for doing. Seeing all the buildings in person was wonderful. I was blessed with beautiful weather as well.

The United States Capitol is a symbol of American democracy and an architectural masterpiece. Its grandeur, with the iconic dome and neoclassical design, is a sight to behold. Visitors can explore its rich history through tours and exhibitions, gaining insight into the workings of the U.S. government. The Capitol grounds, with the National Mall stretching before it, offer a stunning backdrop for reflection and photos. While it's a must-visit for its historical and political significance, be sure to plan ahead, as security measures and access can vary.

The Capitol Building is located in a 58 acre park originally landscaped by Frederick Law Olmstead in 1874. There are over one hundred variety of trees, plenty of seating, and incredible views. Walk in the footsteps of some of the most influential people in the US and contemplate as you look out over some of the same views the things they did, decisions they made, and the effects those had long term. This is a powerful experience and highly recommended.

Very informative and educational. The tour only shows the rotunda and some other hallways and such but this small amount is still very well explained by the knowledgeable tour guides, they make the little you're seeing seem like alot.

Stupendous and rich architectural heritage. A must visit place in Washington Dc.. The cultural respect of each state depicted so precisely and the cohesiveness along with unity of ideas under one roof. It is always advisable to book a trip to the Capitol through the official website. Book in advance for hassle free visit. Please be guided by the prohibited items, they are listed on the website as well.

Stunning. I was blown away by how massive it was. It in an incredible place. Highly recommend the tour. Talk to your local senator and representative to see if you can schedule a tour. Also we loved the gift shop. The people working there are the best. Lots of affordable shirts, sweatshirts, jewelery, and capitol themed items.

Make sure you book a tour online ahead of time! I arrived a few minutes early for a tour, checked in and stood in line for about 15 minutes - which was super fun because one of the docents entertained us with some awesome facts about the statues in the Visitor Center. The tour started with a 13-minute film to set the scene. We were all lined up and given wireless tour guide systems - make sure you stay close to your guide or you'll lose signal otherwise. The actual tour was educational and fun. Our guide took us to great points of interest throughout and encouraged us to take pictures and ask plenty of questions. Given heightened security measures and the uphill climb to the south entrance, be sure you arrive early enough to be on time for your scheduled tour.

So so so amazing. This building is absolutely beautiful and inspiring. We loved it. Definitely worth booking online and waiting. Yes. You need to book online and go through security. They provide a little movie and a tour guide who takes you and about twenty other people on a guided tour. Check the times beforehand. It seems if you come early in the day you get a better chance of seeing the rotunda. The two main meeting rooms were closed due to staffing problems.

Loved the tour. It is about 2 hours. Our tour guide was great. Open to questions and was very knowledgeable on things of the Capitol Building. Just to be in the Rotunda was worth it. To be in the same room where Presidents and those that lie in State was a phenomenal feeling. Absolutely great and beautiful

I went to the Capitol Building, hoping to have an historic experience. I was not let down! Every pore of this building speaks to its history. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and was celebrating her 35th year as a guide in the building. I added several images to my portfolio. You won't find better architecture anywhere!

It’s the Capital. What can I say. The private behind the scene tour was even better. Sorry , no pictures were allowed.

Our nation's beautiful capital. It's well maintained and very well guarded. Once I saw it emerge from behind the trees, I was blown away. The architecture is magnificent. There's so much detail, and it's so perfect. Lot's of middle school trips came here, but they were, for the most part, respectful. I'd love to come back and visit again one day.

The 58 acre very well maintained park immediately surrounding the US Capitol building is known as US Capitol Grounds. The green lush park-like setting looks beautiful against the Capitol building and National Mall. The grounds is bordered by stone wall. Different types of trees and bushes are grown in the grounds with curved walkways. Many trees on the Capitol grounds have memorial associations. Leisurely walk around the world power center to explore the beauty of the Capitol building is great experience. The entry to the Capitol building is closed for the general public but walking up to the steps of this symbolically most important and impressive public building of United States and the world is great opportunity. After six months of enhanced security measures, finally the fence is down and people can now visit the Capitol grounds.

Booked a tour through the Capitol and it was absolutely worth it. First of all it's free an approximate 45min tour with a guide. Our guide Olivia was fabulous. Funny, informative and professional. I felt that she really enjoys working at the Capitol. No passports needed, but there is a very good security check before you enter. Restrooms are plenty and very clean. Food court and gift shops are clean and have everything you need.

Visiting the US Capitol was an awe-inspiring experience that exceeded all expectations. From the majestic architecture to the rich history contained within its walls, every moment spent exploring this iconic landmark was truly memorable. The guided tour provided fascinating insights into the workings of American democracy and the significance of the Capitol in shaping our nation's story. Standing beneath the magnificent dome and walking through the hallowed halls where history was made left me with a profound sense of patriotism and appreciation for our democratic heritage. A visit to the US Capitol is an absolute must for anyone seeking to understand the heart of America.

Had a great time touring the Capitol. We had to reserve a time to go on but totally worth it. The tour guide was informative and funny. They use these head phone sets which enable you to hear the guide no matter how far back from them you are. It is also loud in there so you don’t miss any information put out. The building is beautiful and so clean. Would highly recommend to those who haven’t been. They also have clean bathrooms to use.

A lot of this area is fenced off, for obvious reasons. But there is still plenty of room to walk the area, enjoy the view of the iconic Capitol building, and (if you come in December) enjoy the Christmas tree.

Took a free tour of the capitol. Had an advance registration. Lots to see and plenty of interesting facts. The food at the cafeteria was delicious as well.

  • 5/5 Tina G. 7 months ago on Google
We were able to get a walk-in tour of the Capitol without pre-registration. Lines were quick and short and our tour guide (employee) was great. She explained and answered all of our groups questions with patience. Capitol building is grand and beautiful from inside. Restrooms were clean and grounds are well maintained. The inside tour group is about 15-20 people in one group and there are multiple groups going of the same size. They provide you with a head phone and guide will give information about everything as you proceed inside. Very well organized and interesting tour of the Capitol! Loved it!!

The U.S. Capitol Grounds in Washington, D.C., are a symbol of American democracy and a testament to the nation's history. The grand Capitol building, with its iconic dome, is the epicenter of the U.S. government. The expansive lawns and gardens surrounding it offer a serene escape from the bustling city. The impressive statues, including the Statue of Freedom, add to the ambiance. The grounds are not just a physical setting for the country's legislative branch but a place where history unfolds, from presidential inaugurations to historic protests. A visit here is an opportunity to witness the heartbeat of American governance and immerse oneself in the nation's rich heritage. It's a must-see for anyone interested in the United States' political history and institutions.

It was a beautiful sunny day to simply walk and take in the possibility of what has taken place in this building! Took some time to sit and listen to others walking around and spoke to a local. Inside was a treat as well. It was pretty busy with school groups and would like to return at a quieter time. All in all.... it was a profound day!🇺🇲

Can get timed access tickets online or get tickets inside which may add delay. Short but quality tour of about an hour. Small gift shhop. Good cafeteria. Senate and house passes obtained by calling local representative and are limited to a couple weekdays.

Unfortunately, many parts were closed due to having visitors, so the tour was short. The building has so much history and is amazing the artwork that is in it. The grounds are beautiful! The staff was absolutely wonderful and very informative!

Enjoyed our free 45 minute tour of the capitol. Our tour guide was great. All of the staff was super helpful and informative. Went during February so there was no long lines. Approximately 5000 people were scheduled to have a tour today. We were told during on season that there are around 15,000 people going to tour the capital per day. A 15 minute movie is shown before a tour guide takes you on your tour. We did not see any of the members of the house or the senate. We waited inside for all of our tours. There was no outdoor waiting. We did have to go through security in order to get in. We were allowed to bring in a backpack.

A must visit destination in DC but limited as to what you can see within the Capitol building. Video in a theater and a talk in the rotunda. Might get to see one other room, such as the original senate chamber. Understandably tight security. Rich sense of history. Live guide who speaks to your group through headphones is very effective and easy to hear. No charge but reservations required.

Area was clean and the Capital Building tour was very nice and informative. Beautiful architecture and statues through out the building. Several self pace tours as well. Our looked really nice illuminated during the stormy night.

The guided tour was incredible. Everyone there was extremely helpful. Fun fact that I did not know. In order to get tickets for the tour, you must go through your US member of Congress. They will make the arrangements. Be sure to make them as soon as you know your travel dates. I missed out on the White House.

We booked a tour ahead of time through our Representative. We didn't stand in line long to het to our reps office. One of his interns led the tour, we had to wait in a short security line before going into the actual Capitol building. Building is gorgeous and filled with history. Fun and educational place to visit.

Wonderful place to visit. There are free tours, but you must book them in advance. The senate and house floors were not shown on the tour. Our tour guide said they had been closed to the tours since covid. There is a good restaurant to eat at in the visitor center.

We went after hours so we did not have the opportunity view within the Capitol. This review is strictly about the outside. The capitol is absolutely astonishing in person. The security was really nice as well. We can't wait to return on order to take a tour within.
