Moving from America to Coventry, this was my first official pub I'd ever been to. I was so shocked at how people just sat around all day hanging out talking, eating cheap food and drinks. Well, that was over 5-years ago, and I've gotten used to pubs now. And I must admit that this one runs very efficiently! My husband and I go to this specific pub once a month to grab a tasty meal and a drink for less the cost of two lattes at high end coffee shops. We leave full and satisfied, and it doesn't break the bank. It's a Grade Listed building, which means the architecture of it can't be modified, so you get really quirky stuff, like an ancient staircase, and a crazy number of additional stairs in order to actually use the ladies toilet! 😂 (There's a disable toilet downstairs, but it's only right to use the normal ones upstairs). The place is kept up nicely, with seasonal Christmas decor in December, and it's regularly cleaned. There's no old stench smell here, which is a good sign. And above that, the staff are really great! There's been a turn over throughout the years of course, but the good ones always seem to stay on. They offer quick and efficient service. There's outside seating in the front, which anyone and everyone seems to occupy... it's mostly for the smokers. But there's a lovely warm weather outside seating upstairs around the back - non smoking. My favorite thing about visiting is the unlimited refills for coffee, tea, lattes, mochas, etc. It's a really nice automatic machine and tastes great. So count me in for breakfast! And if I go for lunch or dinner, then a full-sugar large Pepsi is in order! I do wish they'd work on their dessert menu 😭... but the quantity and taste of food for the cost makes up for it. So if you're in Coventry and want to check out an authentic ancient pub, this is the place! Be sure to check out all of the historic pictures and drawings around the place too and on the way to the toilets!

Large establishment with plenty of tables. There is step free access at the main entrance however all of the tables and chairs on this level are all of the bar stool type so not suitable for wheelchair users. The higher level area up a few steps have the normal height tables and chairs. Here the very helpful staff will open the emergency exit to allow wheelchairs in from the street.

It's a nice bar with a very affordable prices and a beautiful outside garden area on 1st floor. It has several beers to choose from and also red beers that are extremely cheap. To improve, I'd recommend that they should play music after 10, at least on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays

An elderly lady sat in outside seats with little dog was also told no dogs allowed! So we went to Greggs for coffee never been excluded from Weatherspoons before because I had a bicycle unhappy customer

The staff didn’t ask Id when they served the first time and for the second drink they asked the Id and we showed the photo Id in phone and they didn’t accept it. They didn’t serve us the second time and the staff was unapologetic and rude about this. I showed them my photo ID and I know it was against the rule. If they asked us in the first time, we could’ve moved to another place. This was completely their fault and we’ve also noticed they didn’t asked ID on the other tables. And we felt like she’s (the staff) being racist. And When we asked about this the staff told that, it’s according to their perspective they can decide whether they we are above drinking age or not so it clearly shows they are judging people by their appearance not by the rules. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Nice old building with some local history to it. Typical Wetherspoons decor with outdoor seating and plenty of tables. I found it slightly grubby though and I visited twice, Monday evening when it was quiet a few tables had dirty dishes and needed cleaning. Cheap though.

It was our first full day in the UK after traveling from Florida, USA so an obligatory stop at a Wetherspoons was in order and the Flying Standard was very conveniently located near the Coventry Cathedral. As is usual, good Fish and Chips with an Ale and a Cider.

Not a bad pub depending on the time of day or night you go in there. Good prices lovely staff and not a bad atmosphere. Food is ok but only ever eat there when I've been drunk.

Average pub chain. Not like they used to be, with this unique atmosphere and fantastic people.Unfortunately these are now very rare to find.Weatherspoon mostly for family meals and gatherings.Too big for me, but that's my personal opinion.

Visited at lunch time mid week. Very busy pub in the city centre but service was quick and food was really good. Tables could do with being cleared a bit quicker but not a deal breaker.

Tried Fish and chips, freedom breakfast, large breakfast overall they were pretty decent.

  • 4/5 Keith D. 1 year ago on Google
Busy, but staff work hard to ensure food and drink are served quickly. Prime position right in City Centre. Tables cleared and prepared again as soon as they are vacated. If only the staff training included filling the pint glasses with a full pint it would be perfect.

An excellent place to dine. The jacket potato with veggies and the apple crumble were delicious. The best thing is that the waiters know what they offer (how it tastes, how strong the alcoholic drinks are...), listen to you and recommend just what you need. They also serve non-fizzy apple cyder which is devine.

A bit too busy when I last visited, but overall food was good. Enjoyed all that I ordered. Its a nice place for a day out if you don't want to spend a lot

I went with a friend around busy hours. Staff were courteous and fast, and we were able to find seating without difficulty. The dinner was reasonably priced and arrived fast. We both loved the food's quality and the overall experience. I would recommend giving this place a try.

One of the nicer spoons I have been to! A quite modern interior set over 2 floors: there is also a terrace on the upper floor. The place is generally clean and occupied by locals from the early opening hours, though it is very very friendly and the service is pretty fast and food reasonably fresh. The toilets are a WALK. And some pretty memorable characters about, a perfect stop for people watching if sitting by the windows.

One of the better Spoons I've used. Food was pretty good for the price. Service was quite quick. We called in for a drink the night before on our way to meet friends and it was very busy.

Went on a busy bank holiday with 10 family members. Found seating upstairs, staff were polite and efficient. The food was well priced for good value and arrived quickly. Everyone enjoyed the quality of the food and the whole experience. I would recommend trying this place.

It's a an affordable good ambience place in Coventry. Most of the alcohol are at a cheaper rate and the cocktail taste good too. Most of the dishes are pocket friendly and affordable.. very good place to hangout with friends and family. Must visit place .. it has cuisine ranging from Italian, indian , continental food. Will visit again and will definitely try the breakfast once .. Enjoy eating 😋

Not bad at all compared to other bars in the chain. As always they would benefit from more staff. Upstairs there was only one memer of staff who was run off their feet despite working their hardest. Thoroughly enjoyed the large bottles of hooch though...a genuine throwback to younger years 🤣

Nice meal on a Sunday afternoon shopping trip to Coventry from Birmingham. Steak was a little bit tough but still very tasty. Will visit again 😋👍

Typical Spoons, great deals on beers and food. Friendly staff, split level pub with an upstairs but non typically for Spoons, downstairs loos! Close to Coventry Uni so popular with the students but they are a good bunch and every time I've been in they are all well behaved and super polite.

Lovely place to vist, great prices and fantastic staff. Two floors and kept very clean. Very popular and can get quite busy during the day given the location (city centre) but highly recommed for a visit, large spacious pub, plenty of seating including outdoors, and as mentioned previously the prices are fantastic!

Would not recommend we waited 45 minutes for our food when it came out it was stone cold I asked for a rare steak it came out well done and over cooked and the steak on the over meal was also over cooked with something that was supposed to be meat but was just a big piece of fat that was thrown on the plate disgusting and there was no staff to tell about it as one member of staff was seen by my dad smoking a vape as he walked around the pub the service was very poor won't be returning and I would advise overs not to go here

It is a very typical pub and a nice place to spend the evening having some drinks and food. Yesterday I really enjoyed my dinner here, cheap and big quantity.

Fantastic first visit to wetherspoons Coventry for us, great service and friendly staff, talk about value for money in a large premises.

  • 5/5 DirtySheriffx 1 year ago on Google
The service was amazing, using the in house app ment that my drink came with in a few minutes of sitting down. The food arrived promptly and tasted amazing plus the prices were not to bad for what you get. Would definitely recommend.

Popular pub in centre of city. Well kept beer, tasty food at very good value price. Busy atmosphere created by clientele of all age groups. Quick service. Recommended

No complaints and better than expected. Went early on a Saturday evening and still got served quickly by friendly staff. Got a table no problem; lots of room upstairs also. Ordered beer and burger for £6. Food came quickly and was what you'd expect - fine for the price. Staff asked about meal and were attentive. Can't complain and would go back.

We arrived here and asked for a table. They led us to a dirty table. My family and I sat here for an hour with a dirty table after we asked countless times for the table to be cleaned. The waiter was extremely rude and ignored us completely. The waiter then bought our food to a dirty table. Worst service I have ever experienced. We only sat and ate our meal because we had already paid for it. I will not be coming here again and I will not be recommending this place to anyone. On top of that, they got our order wrong. We asked them to bring the right order, the waitress forgot and left us on the table waiting for our food. So it was a complete waste of money and time.

I'm normally a big fan of this place but I went in early Friday evening for fish and chips only to be told they had no fish so much for fish and chip Friday!!😡

  • 4/5 Rick T. 5 years ago on Google
Visited on a Saturday, very busy and tables quite tightly packed together, difficult to get around to tables where condiments and milk and sugar are located, but for other drinks and food the Wetherspoons application proved invaluable once again. The staff worked hard to keep tables clear and things moving along, food and drinks reasonably priced and will visit again if in the area.

Typical Weatherspoons. Nice large pub with loads of extra space upstairs. Very good value meals and drinks. Portions are good across the range and breakfasts are excellent value for money. Clean on the last visit and staff were helpful, friendly and courteous. Acess friendly to ground level.

Does what it says on the tin. Cheap, tasty, filling food. It's not gourmet, but it's pretty good for the price. We come here regularly for breakfast.

The Flying Standard is one of three wetherspoons pubs found within the ring road. It's pros are that it is conveniently located and it doesn't get as busy as the Earl of Mercia. It's cons are that the food is variable but normally not good (a low point was where the kitchen managed to serve chips that were cooked on the outside but still frozen in the middle), the floor tends to be sticky (I never want to ask why) and in the evenings the atmosphere gets more tense sometimes as a prelude to a fight breaking out. The Earl of Mercia is close enough to try out first. If there isn't room there then this is a suitable back up option in the day. At night I'd take the walk to the Sky Dome and visit the Spon Gate instead.
