Pic is looking out from the Dun Cow. Very nice atmosphere, cosy and comfy, quality pub. A good bit of history attached to it too. Stopped for a pint, will go back to try a meal there

The Dun Cow is a superb venue for many reasons. Named after a local myth the legend has it that the Dun Cow was a "monstrous beast four yards high and six yards long" which provided milk to the locals. A witch made it go murderous & it rampaged until slain by Guy, Earl of Warwick.......so the story goes. Dunchurch the village, was once located at the crossroads of the coaching roads between London and Birmingham and Oxford and was for centuries an important staging post. At one point, there were no less than 27 coaching inns there to cater for all the travellers. Two of these still remain; the 'Dun Cow' and 'The Green Man' My two visits there were one just for drinks with my daughter in law, who introduced me to the place and then the following day for a solo lunch. I can't complain about either event. The beers on both visits were in excellent condition - well justifying the Cask Marque accreditation awarded and the day followings lunch - not by reservation - but was accommodated, despite being almost totally committed by those who had, sensibly, phoned ahead. The pan fried seabass fillet, king prawns, potatoes and samphire, was excellently presented, looked good and tasted as good as it looked. Compliments to the chef were forwarded. Definitely on my repeat visit list, the next time I travel up from Somerset.

Oops, that was the wrong review! This is the correct one: Our short break, staying and dining at the Duncow was excellent; comfortable, well appointed and spacious rooms. Spectacular service, both for evening meal (spent with family) and breakfast. I would highly recommend this venue for short breaks.

Booked as was given a birthday voucher and fancied somewhere not been and so glad we decided on here. Did book on the morning and glad we did as obviously a very popular choice. We arrived half an hour early but certainly not a problem as shown straight away to our table which was absolutely perfect and very cozy considering it was a bit nippy outside. Drinks order taken straight away along with food order as we had already checked the menu for vegan options. Drinks arrived soon after and after a quick chat and taking in beautiful surroundings, so did our food. Nothing too much trouble, food and service great. So glad we decided to go and will definitely return, maybe even book a room and try whiskey menu. Fully recommend!

Visited on the 26th November 2022 and must say was a lovely evening, staff really helpful and friendly. The place was warm and inviting and the food was lovely. Would highly recommend visiting if in the area and in need of some decent, filling pub food

Wondered past and thought I would pop in as cold winters night and lovely log fire on the go. 1st the staff. Excellent service. Didn't have to wait long for drinks. Even when waiting for a table I was asked if OK and need anything else to drink etc. 2nd the food. Had a button mushroom starter with pork belly main. Only criticism is the veg was over boiled. Other than that I can't fault the visit to this establishment which come across as a friendly local and even had facilities dogs. Will visit again in the future to sample more of the menu if I'm in the area

Very popular place and busy on weekends. Restaurant menu offers great food choices. There is a number of rooms that can be used for more private celebartions or meals. there are also guest rooms if you may wish to stay overnight to spend more time in Rugby. There is enough parking spaces in the adjacent yard.

Booked for a table of 6, not informed that the menu was reduced, seated very quickly and informed there was no rib eye so the additional charge for steaks would not be incurred as it had been swapped for sirloin. Sat and waited to order drinks, waited a bit more, finally ordered, waited again to order food, with such a limited menu it doesn't take so long to decide, starter came out some 30 minutes later, no presentation, just salmon thrown on one side of a plate, and some type of fish in mayo dumped on the other, and a bit of bread, this should have symbolized what was next to come, when the steaks that five of us had arrived with the additional five triple cooked chips, well I didn't know a medium steak could be so tough, the sixth person waited about 5 minutes for their dry turkey to appear, desert was crumble, the crumble was burnt on the top, not browned and had obviously spent the night under the heat lamp, it had the world's smallest amount of filling. Overall a very poor dining experience, the food can only be described as dreadful, good job we checked the bill as the additional cost for rib eye had been added. The food in August was ok, but I would not eat here again, I feel sorry for the staff who have to serve the stuff.

Visited for Sunday lunch. Lots of outdoor and indoor seating which is great, and dog friendly too. We had the most attentive wait-staff, who was very efficient - offering us condiments the moment our roasts were served, and generally very fast service. We had the turkey roast and the beef roast, and a side of cauliflower cheese. The beef was very well-done, and the stuffing ball that came with the turkey was very bready and brought back memories of ‘school dinners’, but otherwise they were very tasty and delicious potatoes and vegetables. Cauliflower cheese was excellent. It was a bit shocking to see that all the roasts are at least 2000 (the turkey roast is 1888 calories, beef 2014 cals, and the pork belly roast is a whopping 2900 calories) which is really quite unnecessary, but clearly outlined on the menu should you want to opt for something healthier. Great venue however, ample parking, and great range of drinks - cask ales, various gins, and a good selection of wines by the glass.

Waiting staff were great. The food was not great. Lunchtime meal with friends: all of the green veg was way overcooked and we suspected left overs from the evening before! My new potatoes were crinkly and dry on the outside, mushy in the middle. Chips despite looking nice on the outside were mostly not cooked. My fishcake was unlike any I had had before, they were just about holding together and covered in oil - obviously deep fried. We really couldn't be bothered to complain until the plates were collected, as we were enjoying nattering and didn't want to mar our time together.

Service is ridiculously slow, we ordered x2 Pizzas, a garlic pizza bread and 5 bowls of chips. The garlic bread came after 45 minutes….with nothing else…20 minutes later the chips arrived….and the pizza never came. We went to the bar to ask where it was. Eventually it arrived with absolutely no apology a simple “I don’t know what happened there I have no answer for you” I mean wow!!! At that point our kids were full on garlic bread and chips, that were meant to be their sides. Won’t bother again, we’re local and tried so many times but it’s so unreliable it’s impossible to recommend, either good food and terrible service or good service and terrible food. Really frustrating evening.

Pub, restaurant, hotel. Very popular. Nice place, friendly staff, extensive selection of drinks, reasonably priced. They say the food is good, and the hotel is always busy. I like it. If you brought your wife, girlfriend, or first date here, they wouldn't be disappointed.

Ate here for dinner and stayed for one night. The food took nearly an hour to arrive after not having 4 things we wanted off the menu. When it did come it was poorly presented and overcooked. I could’ve done better at home. I complained for maybe the second time in my life and was told I’d have to go to the bar to speak to the manager. The room I stayed in was right next to some stairs and an entrance door. The walls were paper thin and I was woken up multiple times. Would not recommend.

Hannah always goes the extra mile and her dedication to her job is like no other…It was recently my dad’s 70th birthday which we celebrated with a family meal at the Dun Cow…Even though Hannah was not working that night, she arranged for my Dad to be served his dessert on a birthday board, which was the perfect finishing touch to a beautiful meal! Coming to the Dun Cow is a treat for us, and when Hannah is on shift, she is always smiling and is so natural at making her customers feel welcome and makes sure that they have a lovely time…Hannah is a credit to her team

I came in for lunch and after having friends recommend the Dun Cow I thought why not give it a try. The food was amazing I had the hunters chicken and the brownie and safe to say I was stuffed. Our server Hannah was lovely and polite and catered for all our needs and was a true delight to meet as she helped keep my daughter entertained, would recommend to others.

Called in on the off chance, they had no room in the restaurant so chose to eat in the bar. Staff were friendly and pleasant but as we wasn't in the restaurant didn't get that extra service but the Sunday dinner was excellent, no complaints at all with the food served

We had a lovely late lunch here today. It took us ages to choose food and drinks because all of the options sounded delicious. I highly recommend the house sodas. I went with passion fruit flavour. We had the chicken pie, beef brisket sandwich and children's tomato penne. I'm really impressed by how well accommodated our little boy (aged 15 months) was. The highchair was very secure and clean. The penne was half sized and cooked quite soft, there was a big enough portion to feed a child of around 8years in my opinion but definitely safe for a toddler to eat. They provided us with a separate cold plate so we could put some of his pasta and veggies on it to cool down to toddler safe temperatures. Our food was delicious, I especially liked the beef dripping sauce with my sandwich. I'm sad we didn't get to try any of the puddings but my child was at the limit of how long he can be quiet for and figured it would be inconsiderate to other diners if I subjected them to a shouting infant so I could get some cake. The decor is lovely and the staff were friendly. My husband informs me he took 4 previous partners here also so safe to say he gives it 5 stars and a "will definitely come back" sort of rating too. 🤣 I think it is a flexible pub, good for a family meal or a date night!

Had a really lovely evening meal . Had the fishcakes with poached egg and chips and broccoli stems. It was a shame the egg wasn't runny, otherwise was really nice. Lovely atmosphere and great service

Had a ladies meal out, service was very slow and no mention of food delay. After an hours wait food was brought out but my pizza was cold but on a hot plate, I called the waitress over who immediately took it away and brought a fresh one out and took it off the bill without question. The food was good but unfortunately the 3 stars is based on our experience that day

Decided to go for a breakfast. We didn't book as didn't expect it to be busy. There was very few people there. Really good food, good service, having been before it was on parr with previous experiences. Would recommend.

Had a lovely evening dining here. Beautiful food from set Mother’s Day menu which was very reasonable. The very lovely Mollie served us and looked after us - no request was too much trouble! She was brilliant. 😊 Highly recommend.

I recently visited the dun cow, I had the 8oz gammon steak and it was absolutely delicious! We were served by Paige who showed excellent customer service, was extremely polite and friendly! She made our experience. Thank you so much, will definitely be returning!

Absolutely outstanding today thank you so much, could not have been better. Not been here for a while & unsure about returning. Just a brilliant experience, Debbie completely made our day & experience here as so friendly, helpful & efficient. Outstanding service & a really lovely lunch - perfect - and I am a harsh critic, bowled over for a change. Thank you, special & appreciated. Stellar.

A lovely hotel in a lovely village. Good food, room clean and comfortable but pillows hard and lumpy. Was given to newer pillows but still not the expected quality. Also shower had a broken door and unable to change the water flow from the overhead shower to the handheld hose. Mentioned to staff on first morning but nothing done about it. In all a very uncomfortable way to shower as had to lean to one side so as not to get my hair wet. Otherwise all ok

We had a lovely evening for my birthday. I had a voucher for a bottle of Prosecco which I enjoyed and the meal was beautiful. The staff member was very helpful and nothing was too much trouble so we left a healthy tip

Went to The Dun Cow for a birthday celebration and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was friendly and lively and they were very accommodating of two young boys and a baby. Dan looked after us extremely well, nothing was too much trouble, even on a very busy Sunday lunchtime. Dan even sang happy birthday with us, he is a credit to The Dun Cow and enhanced our experience. We will be back and would recommend eating here whatever the occasion.

Amazing food the best place we have found in rugby by far. The waitress Emily was very attentive even offered to change my husbands drink if he didn’t like it. The flower pit desert I highly recommend it was the star of the show edible flowers and terracotta pot. I would highly recommend this restaurant and will be returning very soon x

From the moment I booked a large table, Michelle the manager, was more than accommodating. We were also staying the night and had booked two rooms. The person who booked us in could see we had booked two rooms upstairs, however had a visually impaired guest staying and asked if we would rather a room downstairs for him. Yes! Please! She sorted out a room downstairs in her stride and made sure it was easily accessible for him. I can’t tell you the last time I had caring and conscious service like this, even at the best hotels. We then had the greatest dinner service I have had in a long time by Molly, our server. As someone who has been in hospitality for a very long time and is very picky; the starter was on our table in 15 minutes (it’s always busy here!) and our mains followed swiftly after they were cleared. I couldn’t fault my steak which was perfectly medium rare as requested and the other 6 guests at our table were as happy as myself. In a very trying time in this industry, the Dun Cow is showing us all how it can still be done with professionalism, kindness and fantastic service. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! What a joy it has been to stay with you x

We stayed in Dunchurch for several days last week, and found ourselves at the Dun Cow most evenings for dinner and drinks. We were made to feel so welcome, nothing was too much trouble, the food was superb, and the atmosphere was wonderful. I'd recommend it to anyone, and if we ever find ourselves in the area again, we'll definitely be stopping in.

We had a nice stay here, the rooms were clean and modern- very nicely decorated. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Breakfast was on be expensive side, particularly for vegan options (mushrooms, tomato, beetroot hash cake, hash browns, beans and toast) but the beetroot hash cake was really tasty! The lunch was very nice too

We recently had a reception style celebration at the duncow, we were looked after by a lovely lady called Jen, she was amazing making sure everyone was catered for, another lovely lady called Philippa provided us with proper tablecloths and laid the table after I'd decorated them, the manager who unfortunately I didn't get his name was amazing too and also made sure our evening went smoothly, as if things couldn't get any better the room we had was just perfect for us all, I highly recommend the Duncow for any family event, everything was just perfect

This is a middle of the road restaurant with a good ambience & if your near a fire can be warm on a cold winters evening unfortunately this time we were by a large window & it was cold & drafty. Have generally had a good meal and staff are pleasant & helpful but service is always a bit slow although plenty of staff on. Five of us went this evening (including two children) so table booked for 5 pm. Drinks took a long time & food eventually arrived at 6.10pm. Have always been pleased with meal but my sea bass had obviously been on or under a hot plate for a long time as very crisp & leathery & burger buns were similar. Did not complain as it was getting late for small people & didn’t want to wait any longer. We had a good time but a pity about the food & time as two boys were very hungry,

I hadn't been to the Dun Cow for a long time. Very good menu not just the standard pub fare and not too expensive. The place was nearly full and for a Wednesday lunchtime this speaks volumes. Staff were friendly and very helpful especially dealing with an allergy issue. Definitely recommended

Oh what a fantastic place to stay from the moment you walk in the door we had such a lovely warm welcome. Staff are so friendly and helpful they could not do enough for us. We were visiting from Kent and our stay was so lovely couldn't ask for any better 5 stars for everything. The rooms are so lovely clean and welcoming. Breakfast was delious. Can't wait to return in the new year. Happy Christmas to all the lovely staff.

It's a very disappointing meal tonight. The steak was fatty with very little meat on it. The side salad (I was expecting peas) was a bunch of limp leaves with no dressing, which looked like it had been thrown on, and the chips consisted of bits in a bowl. The waiter commented on what I'd left on my plate and apologised, and I was given a free pudding as goodwill. I was okay with this as I had a voucher for 40% off mains; otherwise, I would have insisted on a replacement meal or refund. I have been to Dun Cow several times and always had a great meal, so I won't let this put me off returning. I just will not order a steak again. Staff are always courteous, and the open log fire was lovely to snuggle up against on the very chilly night I visited 😀
