Marvellously medieval day out. We visited during a reenactment weekend and were thoroughly educated and entertained. Good parking (free to English Heritage) which is close to the castle. Staff were all friendly and knowledgeable. We had a good wander around the ruins, grabbed a coffee and thoroughly enjoyed the shows. There are plenty of grounds to walk around, you can also climb up the keep or sit in the stable cafe for a sandwich and drink.

A superb day out. Really very friendly helpful and informative staff. Dog friendly. Nice cafe. Great ice cream. But most important the castle and grounds. It really makes a whole day out with a large castle ruin to explore, walks and pleasant picnic area.

Beautiful gardens and ruins. There’s a nice cafe and gallery which showcase the history of the place. Some interesting multimedia in the museum including a minecraft game. Most interesting fact was that there used to be man made lake here for defense but was drained after the civil war

Excellent half day out. Easy to get to. Staff extremely friendly, helpful and informative. Café has a lovely selection of food, cakes and drinks and more than enough seating inside and out. The new access stairs and platforms are a fantastic addition giving a wonderful new perspective of the castle. Parking was limited but if you get there early there is more than enough. Only complaint is the lack of toilet facilities. Allow enough time to queue if you need to go.

I love this castle, have visited numerous times over the years. The history of this castle is fascinating, from a Norman tower through to the Elizabeth era. As I am obsessed with the medieval and Tudor period, I love coming here. There are minimal info boards, however they do give a little information. You are better off buying the guide book. The castle is a ruin, but still beautiful to look at and explore. Steps and walkways have been installed in places, this makes a big difference when looking around. Garden is stunning. Great for taking a picnic too. It is English Heritage, so if you are a member it’s free entry. There is an on site car park again free for EH members. Toilets, cafe and shop on site. Staff very friendly and welcoming. I highly recommend a visit.

An amazing experience. Another English Heritage site that delivers beautifully. If not a member please make sure you look it up. There was a medieval festival at the time we visited with over 350 people putting on a grandiose event. There were so many new things to learn about the old days. Embroidery, cooking, hunting, medicine, archery, forging and many many more. Re-enactment of battles, court jester having a fire show, medieval music etc. And if this was not enough you can visit the keep, the gardens and the gatehouse, all beautifully presented. There is a tea room with little choice of food, but of course you can bring your own picnic. Toilets were sufficient for the amount of people on site and they were very clean. Definitely 100% recommended

Great day out by myself the space was beautifully kept and the gardens smelt amazing, not busy at all. Lovely exhibitions and the audio guide was immersive worth getting one. Plenty of space do recommend as a day out even having a picnic. The tea room and bookshop were spectacular. Free entry with English heritage membership which you can get on site

Beautiful castle grounds and easy to get to. You get to go inside some of the older structures and the state they are in is fascinating. You can see the old wooden beam holes and how they constructed the floors, windows, and doors. The scale of the rooms is something you don't easily get until you go inside. Beautiful to just walk around even if you don't care about history.

Absolutely lovely and surprising day out at Kenilworth. We used our English Heritage membership for free parking (in the adjacent car park) and entry to the grounds. Very helpful and friendly staff. An informative audio tour was included. There has been a lot of care and attention given to this site and its history was well explained in various boards, signs and exhibits. There was a stair structure built into the ruins some ten years ago which help you fully appreciate the scope, scale and views which Royalty and the wealthy have experienced for almost 500 yrs. Definitely worth a visit!

Like so many people before me I totally loved my time looking around the castle, house and grounds. I was surprised so much of it survived! The castle remains are amazing, huge and in some parts delicate. Built for defense and to entertain Queen Elizabeth I. Great bit of history to delve into. The gardens are lovely and the house is amazing to see just how much is period. There’s a cafe and toilets with plenty of paid parking.

Fabulous place. Very interesting, very photogenic, very well preserved, very nice chatty staff and the cafe is excellent. Lots of places to sit and rest for people like me who are not as energetic as some other people. I loved the entire experience.

Incredible Castle, 3 different constructions from 3 different eras each with their own fascinating history. The tour was spectacular and you could tell the tour guide was very passionate and knowledgeable about the Elizabethan era. Would highly recommend going. Also the cafe food was good and the staff very friendly.

Absolutely another historical gem worth visiting. + The castle has guides around + A breathtaking garden with a fountain in the middle. Flowers are well trimmed & beautiful with the sound of birds in a lovely big cage around the garden. + Seats are all around the castle to relax and enjoy nature. + There's free parking but limited space. + The Staff are quite friendly and always willing to help + There's a little restaurant with indoor & outdoor seating. The trees around also have a nice shade to relax under. + Best to bring your own snacks & drinks as the restaurant is a little costly. + There's a gift shop. + The castle follows the Covid guidelines and is quite safe but please remember to stay safe too 😊 Despite the little minuses listed below, the castle is still worth 4 Stars. - Limited parking with around 30 parking slots. So kind of a 'first come, first serve'. Best arriving by 10.00am weekends to have a slot at the free parking lot. - The garden is one of the main highlights of the castle. Best not going there with high hopes of a big castle. - Not much to see around the castle but the best view is from the top, so worth going to the top. Ps. Hope you enjoy your time there!!x

A great place for a day out! The site is pretty big, and the walkways that have been constructed in the ruins allow you to get access to much of what remains. Be warned: it can be a challenge if you're not keen on heights! The castle is fascinating and is of great historic significance. The Queen's privy gardens are beautiful and well kept. The gatehouse is worth a look as it is intact and has some lovely exhibits, although only the ground floor was open this time round. There's a cafe and a gift shop, and you can take a walk around the mere if you're feeling fit (actually, it's where the mere uses to be as it's all dried up now). Parking is pay and display although English Heritage members can park for free if they have the sticker in their window. The only downside is that they could do with more toilets on site. Also, despite a sign saying that the gatehouse was open until 5pm, we overheard two staff members discussing getting ready to close at 3:45! We had literally been out of the gatehouse for 5 minutes when they closed and locked the door at just after 4pm. Anyway, this was a minor negative point in an otherwise very enjoyable visit.

Visited this nice place today, late autumn sun was gorgeous making the ruins look glorious against the green grass surrounding the castle…. Cream teas at the cafe could complete a pleasant half day out. Ticket is £16/ adult.

Amazing place to visit for a quiet day out. Loved the place more as it's pet friendly so we could take our puppy along with us. Nice views and accessibility through all levels of the castle ruins which was a plus. The gardens are well maintained and again pet friendly. The restaurant/canteen area is great to sit down with family and pets. Wish there were a few more options on the food front for lunch but it was ok. £12 well spent.

Re-enactment event taking place when we visited. Absolutely brilliant, all the participants stayed in character the whole day! Beautiful castle with so much history, lots of information provided - audio tour not available because of event. Added bonus was the Elizabethan garden and aviary. Well worth a visit.

Great day for a history lover! Extensive castle with lots to see and read about the castle's history. Being able to climb Leicester's Tower was a real highlight! Beautiful restored gardens. The experience was made all the better by really knowledgeable and enthusiastic volunteers - thank you for giving up your time!

Beautiful place, to visit. The castle and garden, just amazing :) You can buy tickets on the arrival in the visitor center, as well as gifts. There are toilets and lovely cafe. There is a limited car park space just next to the castle, but opposite the road there is a pub with a car park. Non guests of the pub have to pay, we paid like £6,50 for a day. Definitely worth a visit :)

One of the best EH places we've visited. Amazing amount of work put in to give access to high points, great history and the staff were amongst the most friendly & knowledgeable we've had the pleasure of meeting. Shame we visited late in our holiday, but we will be back.

Nice to get out, limited visitor access meant it wasn't at all busy and could still wander fairly freely. Can recommend the sausage bap. A little overcast but no snow sadly.

Loved this site, enjoyed it more than Stonehenge. Arrived early, just after 10am. Best time is usually early, it was starting to get busier by time we left around 11.30. The car park is just at the end of the path to the grounds, 1 minute walk, free for EH members too. You pass the shop first - even if you pre-booked tickets you need to go check in at the shop (there wasn’t a sign for that so we didn’t, and found out further along we needed to go back to check in). Takes a minute, super quick. Then you reach the site entrance where an EH staff member gives you a map and tells you a couple of highlights about the site - nice, very helpful, smiling and not pushy. We didn’t opt for the audio tour. Then you’re free to roam about. There’s so much history at this site and the ruins are amazing - incredibly big with great intact parts, key features still preserved and explained, lots of signage to explain what you’re looking at etc. In one area, by the Elizabethan bed chamber, there was another staff member who was really nice and directed us through without being forceful or trying to interact too much. Your imagine runs wild thinking what this place would have been like in full swing back when it was at its prime with its stone spiral staircases, the gardens, the big fireplaces and huge windows; this place felt magical and almost unreal. If you’re into history, architecture, fantasy or old-fashioned romance you’ll love this site. We didn’t try the cafe but it looked pretty nice, but as we arrived before the site opened we got breakfast locally - there is a great little cafe around the corner called Morning Sunshine which does amazing food and is really well priced. The shop was a little small, but probably the right size for the site, the product was reasonably priced and an interesting array, though we did not buy anything. All in all a really nice site and will probably visit again.

Simply magnificent. Well worth the price. It's easy to spend a good few hours here, and it's worth getting the free audio guide. We also went on the 20 min ruins tour which was complementary and well worth it. It's a really majestic ruin with a rich history and I can't recommend it enough. Note that you need to get a wristband from the ticket office opposite the gate before going in the main entrance.

Such a beutifull part of history on a beutifull summers day. The ruins are so interesting and also has explanation boards dotted around. There is a cafe to get food and drinks and plenty to see and do. They also put entertainment and shows on for the kids. The staff were curious and professional. 10/10

Snow and rain didn't deter. Elizabethan gardens still impressive. Large ruins. I can hardly imagine this place in its hey day. The Stables serve as cafe and information centre. Gatehouse still intact.

Very interesting place to visit with the family as there is lots to explore and learn about the history of this amazing castle. We enjoyed the storyteller who was very good telling us about the may Tudor Christmas traditions that still have echoes today.

  • 5/5 Hannah R. 7 months ago on Google • 48 reviews
Magical place. Great storytelling throughout on the information boards to help you envisage what it would have been like. The history is absolutely fascinating and the illustrations bring it to life well. Seeing what the rooms were and how they would have been used makes you feel connected to the place. Walkways through the towers are incredible; spectacular views over the rest of the castle and surrounding landscape. Only dissapointment was the cafe: beamed stable setting was magnificent but by 3pm there was barely any food left...just a couple of cakes.

We were surprised how large the grounds were. The weather was cold but dry.It was half term week so we're a number of children,as was also around Halloween. You can explore the castle up stone spiral staircase and also outside staircase, views are great. There is also an exhibition regarding the Castle long history and Leicester gate house. All the children were having fun with the events that were on.Stable cafe very good and lovely gift shop. The Elizabethan garden is also lovely.

Fabulous place to visit with an amazing story in English history to tell. First of all, great staff who were really pleasant and helpful. A large site, we spent 4 hours here including lunch, and the weather was fabulous. The contrast between blue skies and the red coloured buildings was terrific. Plenty of information around about the history of the site, its owners and royal visitors. Coffee was good too. Nice gardens and canaries as well.

Stunning castle with plenty to see for all the family. Enjoyed being able to walk everywhere, with clever metal walkways inside Dudley’s building. Informative boards everywhere and a good guided tour if you wished to join. Stunning Elizabethan garden too. Great value, highly recommend.

Loved it! Especially the 2 tour guides - they offer free tours almost every hour which are very interesting! I would have known what I was looking at without them. Especially the tour in the garden which is full of symbols (every plant and fountain detail is there for a purpose) showing Dudley's love for the queen. And there is the Abbey Mystery Tour you can download at the Kenilworth page, esp when visiting with kids

Loved Kenilworth Castle. It may be ruins but a system of stairs have been put in so that you can walk up to the top of them and get a sense of the scale of the building. Lovely place to visit. Nice gardens and a lovely place to take a picnic. The guides offer talks at set times and are full of enthusiasm. Would recommend.

  • 5/5 Christopher F. 7 months ago on Google
A lovely castle ruin set in beautiful grounds. Lots of areas to explore and some very nice high viewing areas from the top of the towers. There is a cafe but it's a bit expensive but there are plenty of areas to sit and enjoy a picnic. They also have guided tours and activities for children. Would recommend a visit. If you are in the area for a while, consider the English heritage membership. You get your money back and half price entrance to the nearby Warwick castle.

  • 5/5 Selena C. 1 year ago on Google
English Heritage ran property, with fabulous ruins and a tea room. Parking is pay and display. Worth walking off to the left when you first arrive to view the castle from afar before getting your ticket and heading in. You can walk up some of the towers to view the ruins from above which is very cool (not all staircases were open at the time of writing - Jan 2023). As usual with English Heritage properties, lots of useful noticeboards giving you the history of the area. Check their website for opening hours.

Lovely place, tours and talks from well informed guides. Lovely garden and a view from the tower is amazing. Lovely tea room and toilets with a shop for any gifts or keepsakes . Staff are very friendly and helpful . Activities planned throughout the school holidays ,well worth a visit. Car park free for English heritage members , pay and display for others and it is just across from the entrance to the castle

Excellent day out for my birthday. Quite a lot more to see than I believed from reading the reviews. We were there 4 hours and walked about 4 miles which surprised us. We bought a guide book from where you book in and it's full of extra information so well worth the money. It also tells you that if you take your parking tickets back after you visit you can get the parking fee back which we did. Although £6 for all day parking isn't too bad anyway. Will definitely go back. Thanks

It is thought that a castle has stood at Kenilworth in Warwickshire, since Saxon times. It is likely that the original structure was destroyed during the wars between the Saxon King Edmund and Canute, King of the Danes. Following the Norman Conquest, Kenilworth became the property of the crown. In 1129, King Henry I gave it to his Chamberlain, a Norman noble named Geoffrey de Clinton, who was both Treasurer and Chief Justice of England at the time.

I liked the fact that you can explore all the place down and also you can have via audio the full history about the place. The place have picnic tables almost everywhere so that can be also a place to relax with your kids sitting in a beautiful and big green garden showing them how the ancestors lived back in the days. I really disagree with the access price because was a little high for a place to relax but also you can choose to be a member or nah.

This is a lovely castle to visit, especially that they are very dog friendly. The tour guide chap was really nice (if the managers are reading he had a long beard). Now the downsides. The carpark should be free after over £12 per adult then £3 for parking it's a little steep, Not a massive garden but really nicely done. Loads of seatiing so picnic is easy, maybe let the pictures tell the story, very much worth the visit, but should really be £10 per adult max.
