Many traders selling crafts, some are actual artisans and some just importers /resellers. It is quite touristy. Prices are quite high, not sure if you should bargain. Food offerings are fabulous with dishes available from all over the world. Parking is available at the mall and there are plenty of toilets.

Nice place for buying souvenirs back to home. They got a good collection downstairs. Be aware of negotiations. I ended up buying one item in 1200 Rand which they were asking for 2200 Rand and still it feels like I am overpaying.

We hadn't been to the the "Art & Craft Market" for a few years and took some overseas family yesterday to visit. They loved the experience. The vendors were incredibly friendly and helpful and we were surprised at how good the prices were. Highly recommended for both tourists and locals.

Was a great experience, the shop owners are a little over enthusiastic, but all the hand crafted pieces make it totally worth a visit. Just make sure you set a strict budget for yourself if you love African art.

Wide selection of south african arts and crafts from elephant shaped mugs to beautifully beaded jewellery. Prices vary from store to store ( so shop around) but most of them will "give you a better price". The people are friendly and always welcome you to look in their store just to see what they have made. Most shops carry the same items, which could be used as a bargaining tool. Just be careful and look out for defects as some items may be damaged.

(Translated by Google) Very large selection of craftsmanship at very fair prices - trading is desirable and prices from one third to half of those of shops can be achieved. Shop # 10 is particularly recommended, as is the one near the door to the underground car park.

I'm giving a two for the low variety of products and because the artisans look desperate to sell anything! It's very similar to the Rosebank Sunday market, maybe it's the same people who organized it all, they have this consistent problem of always bringing more of the same, then I believe it's because of this the artisans are desperate to sell, because if you don't buy from their stall, you'll buy from the next, it's all the same stuff and they know it! You can't breath there, you're looking something and the neighbors are screaming on your ear "HELLO, CHECK HERE, I HAVE NICE PRODUCTS!!!"! It's a shame! I put my feet in and just wanted to runaway from there on the next second! You have a big space, I don't know why you don't explore it with variety! If you fastly check around Instagram that's thousands of artists that may be happy to expose their art with you! It doesn't surprise that it's always empty inside, maybe you should change the person who choose the vendors! I really don't know how they make money! I hope you get my constructive words and think about it, you have the privileges that almost no one have!

I'm giving it 2 stars because you can find some good touristy things; however the shopping experience is a nightmare. I've never experienced anything like it. And I've traveled to many other countries and even in south africa I have never seen this behavior. The upstairs section is fine, but once you get downstairs.... oh dear lord! Imagine having more than 20 vendors chasing you pretty much your whole time there. They are relentless. Instead of letting you look they all grab your arm pulling you into their kiosk area. It's really a shame because that's really the only store around, to shop for touristy items. After I figured out that everyone was acting like this was a zoo I ran out. I hope management sees this review because others have complained about the same thing. You guys are losing business. By the way if you decide to buy something remember to haggle the price min. half off. That's the true price of the items. Unfortunately tourists are always charged double to sometimes triple. Also do know what they sell there is sold overall all over South Africa; so they aren't selling something handmade and personable made by them. I think I saw two vendors making something by hand.

OMG.. why didn't I know about this place? A good variety and not as pushy as some. Wonderful for last minute purchases.

It takes a lot from me to openly lambast something on a public platform, but this must be said. This place is absolutely awful, and I mean truly abysmal. You find yourself being charged nigh on double what you'd ordinarily hope to spend on souvenirs and handcrafted goods that I know, with resounding certainty, are purchased wholesale from the the same supplier. The variety is sorely lacking with one stall resembling one after the other with the only variety presenting itself in the different and imaginative means that the tradespeople attempt to emotionally blackmail and corner you into making a purchase. I've never been harassed like that in my entire life! I had a bloke attempt to wind me up on the basis that he hadn't made a sale that day, that I was his first customer, that I was receiving a 'special price' that was really a second-rate valuation that far exceeded the amount I'd hope to spend on the same product elsewhere. Avoid by all means, a true tourist trap with none of the attendant fun.

It’s a good place for souvenir shopping, with lots of sellers but they all sell the same things. You have to be very patient since they will not stop until the sell something (most of them are very nice though). You have to bargain because the original prices are ridiculous. I got many things for less than half the original price. It’s a very safe place for tourists.

Lots of items to choose from. Clothing, carvings, paintings, purses, jewelry, chess sets. Bargain with vendors for good price. Remember however that this is their livelihood. They all want you to buy from them, but understand that it's not possible. Be firm but polite. Don't be a stupid, rude American!

This place became so expensive. Prices Re ridiculously high, you need to negotiate almost 50% to 60% less than to what they quote.

Always something interesting to see and eat and touch and buy and taste and the vendors are all generally friendly and very helpful. Don’t usually sit down and eat but am very glad I did at the Great Wok Experiment. Has the sizzling steak dish and the owner was most helpful with a bowl and not the polystyrene stuff for me.

Overall the market was very vibrant with many good stalls. Unfortunately our experience with one seller left a sour taste. We wanted to buy some Xhosa items for my adopted daughters, who are ethnically Xhosa. This seller sold us a red mask which he claimed was Xhosa, red representing love, the birds representing freedom etc. They loved it! Turns out to be a Mblo mask from Ivory coast. I had to break it to them that the "beautiful story" wasn't true. Take home message. Most sellers are probably honourable, but not all of them.

A really great place to pick up little arts and crafts that can be used as gifts, ornaments and toys. The shop owners are friendly and more than happy to explain how their products are made and how they can be so versatile in the house hold.

Hip and touristy. The Africa market contains very little South African art except outstanding beadwork. The artists are from all over the african continent. Masks and other artifacts are very well represented and the stall owners are well informed about the origins.

That place is a little bit hidden beside the big mall and most of the stalls are on the level underground, but it's truly a must go. Here you can find so many handcrafted stuff and you could fill up your gift box so easily. If you are looking for a nice dress, a t-shirt or some gimmicks as a gift, here you will find some it and support the people who made it.

There are a variety of native goods that can be purchased from fabric, marble, ebony wood, jewelry, souvenirs- whatever your heart desires. If you have time, you can get. Custom garment in about two days! My suggestion is not to buy the first thing that you see. Vendors are assertive/ friendly aggressiveness as they want you to buy from them. Make them a good deal ( not one that insults ) ! It will be a win/ win .

  • 4/5 Lindi V. 2 years ago on Google
Great for foreign and local visitors alike. I love collecting elephants of any shape and kind so I was in heaven. Prices vary and stall keepers are happy to haggle. However, if you struggle to say no this is NOT the place for you. I understand why the stall keepers push their wears but I found myself cutting my browsing short as no body was taking no as an answer and I found it frustrating to try and look for things I might actually want while constantly having to decline offers on everything.

We were captivated at first by the African art and crafts in this market but were quickly put off by the endless persuading sellers. Although they were friendly, they make window-shopping very unpleasant for us because they would not leave us alone to quietly admire the interesting pieces. On top of that, the prices, despite negotiable, are not cheap. In fact, some of the products are also sold in shops at OR Tambo's international departure hall and they are much cheaper there! Despite all that, it is an experience to visit the place.

Don't be afraid to negotiate your price, the merchants are very experienced and well versed in the bartering arts. Ask for what you're looking for, you will find that some stall managers work together and can help you source your specific item. Be patient with the language barrier with some of the traders, you might not understand each other well but their friendly and keen helping spirit usually gets the job done!
