A nice museum with exhibitions showing the history of Lisburn and also everything related to linen manufacturing starting from the flax plant and ending with the finished products, with live demonstrations by knowledgeable and friendly staff. Free admissions and well worth a visit with your family.

Visited the museum last week and found an Egyptian Exhibition was on ,very interesting and well laid out . The Linen displays were well laid out with a full documented history of mills in the area. There was working looms and card cutting which the young lady described and gave us a demonstration of how they worked

Not wildly exciting but it was interesting to see the history of linen and the process of converting flax into fabric. We were fortuitously there when a school group was doing a guided tour and demonstration so tagged along with them. The demo on the flax gave me a new appreciation for the process to produce the linen clothes I enjoy wearing.

At first we thought it was a bit limited; but the more rooms we explored, the more interesting it became. The live spinning and weaving demonstrations were especially fascinating. Definitely worth a visit. A great way to spend a rainy afternoon. A little tea room might be a worthwhile addition.

Amazing place to visit, history of linen, how it's made, what's made from it, great working machines and displays of clothes and the people behind it's starting point. It's free too and there is a large car park 2 minutes walk from it.

I went to see a painting but immediately became engrossed in the linen exhibits. Timothy demonstrated the spinning wheel and answered more questions than I would have expected to have, even researching information when the opportunity arose. My understanding of the next stage was then refreshed by Alison who patiently took me through the basics of weaving, damask design, making punch cards...and the mechanics of the different looms...before providing a demonstration. Wonderful. Thank you both.

I’m a lover of textiles and learning about the process of making the product from start to finish and learning about the history. My husband and I ended up at the Irish Linen Centre on a spur of the moment decision and it was so quaint and lovely. We spoke to Angus and another gentleman (can’t remember his name, only that he hails from Wales) and both were so knowledgeable and personable. We also had a wonderful chat with a lady who taught us how the looms worked. Super bummed that they were under maintenance so we couldn’t see them at work, BUT she was so thorough in explaining that I didn’t mind. Loved popping in and learning about linen and the history of this amazing fabric!

It a great museum and all staff were friendly and informative . Small gift shop as soon as you enter and different levels offer different viewpoints through time. Also there is a kids area if you are taking little ones. Very little parking out front so I suggest going to the car park about 4 mins walking distance away.

  • 5/5 Emmanuelle S. 4 years ago on Google
It was a real interesting visit. We were giving a chance to spin some linen yarn, see how jacquard cards were punched to create a damask pattern and how the weaving machine worked. It was furthermore put into the economic context of Ireland in these times, our host being a really knowledgeable historian and answering patiently to all our questions. If you visit Belfast, take some time to visit the Linen museum in Lisburn. It is easy to reach by train. However, if one is not fluent in English, the experience will be diminished as there are no written explanation in any languages.
