Very enlightening and enjoyable experience. The game of thrones props are incredible and the staff was friendly and making sure that not too many people are entering the exhibition at once. You can easily book a ticket online but you might want to do it a little in advance. The exhibitions range from nature and animals to local history and even art.

Brilliant range of local history going from the geological formation of the land up to the troubles. We only had time to look at the history but it was clear that they also have great science and art displays. Easy to navigate through and the staff are helpful and friendly. Very clean and safe environment with plenty of toilets. Situated in the very pleasant botanical gardens.

Access is free to visit and no bookings required. We found the museum collections location difficult and struggling without a map. Ulster Museum is home to Northern Ireland’s treasures of past and present. Home to rich collections of art, history and natural sciences all set within the beautiful surroundings of Belfast’s Botanic Gardens. Discover new perspectives about Ancient Ireland, inclusive global histories, the Troubles, and whatever the future may hold. The collections of Ulster Museum tell the story of our shared experiences, connecting the dots around who we are, the past we share, and the future we are building together.

Wow this was an amazing museum. Needs more than 1 visit, we will definitely go back. The mineral section alone was fantastic. The staff were helpful and friendly and we were able to store bags there as we looked round.

Far better than I'd feared. The history galleries are, understandably, given prominence but I really enjoyed the art galleries. The former Lecture Theatre converted into a cinema is an excellent use of the space which has had its architectural details preserved. Too much to see on just one visit.

There are 5 floors with different exhibitions, about absolutely everything. It’s one of the must-see spots in Belfast. It's free but please do not leave without making a donation. The experience the museum offers is worth at least £5. 😉 There's also a gift shop and a coffee shop. And also very cleaning bathrooms! AMAZING!

Great experience, really love this museum, relaxed atmosphere, well organised, really widespread collection with a bit of everything and good facilities like the cafe, shop and toilets. Royal academy of arts exhibition was fantastic. Our now teenage kids and friends enjoyed it too.

Great entertainment. Free. So much to see and enjoy. Great exhibitions. Loved it. Need to go back and spend more time so much to explore. I was even allowed to tie my pet at the entrance while I browse. Great must visit place.

Ulster Museum is an excellent visitor attraction covering all things Northern Ireland and more. From a room devoted solely to the history of the troubles, to modern art, fashion of the 1920s, classic paintings/portraits, dragon sculptures, dinosaur fossils, crystals and rocks Egyptian mummies and more. Attended with my son who commented that the museum was much more interesting than he thought it would be. I particularly enjoyed the Egyptian mummy exhibit and the wooden dragon sculptures on the ceiling. The troubles exhibit brings history to life for those who haven't lived with it on the news. The museum is over 5 levels all accessible by lift for those that need it. There is a cafe on the ground floor. I didn't use it but it seemed busy. If you are looking for the museum it didn't appear particularly well sign posted. Only once we got to the gates for the botanic Gardens did we see a sign post, there didn't appear to be any on the street we walked up to get there. The museum is not open on Mondays. I would recommend a visit to anyone in Belfast and it's deserving of a generous donation as you leave.

One of the best museums I have visited. Packed with years of history. The layout of the building is the best! Allows for easy movement from one section to the other! A must visit if you’re ever in Belfast, a city like no other in the UK!

Lovely for indoor family quality time, entry is free u should take the lift to the top floor then spiral ur way down through the whole museum. I loved the Stone Age part and the Egyptian part where they have a mummy on display. On every floor there is a kids playing area

A beautiful and interesting museum with extensive collection. It is located near botanical gardens and queen's university and very easily accessible through public transport. The entry to the museum is free with an advance booked slot. A curious mind can easily spend whole day exploring the museum. It covered a lot of local history, arts, geology, botany, wildlife etc etc. All the covid protocols were followed with sanitizer etc available throughout the premises. Loved our visit.

I absolutely love this museum! Visiting this place is always a highlight of my trips to Northern Ireland. My partner is a local and introduced me to the museum in June 2022. Even though we had to hurry through the exhibits (and missed quite a few) since the museum was closing early due to a private event, we enjoyed ourselves very much. The warm and friendly staff made it even better and that hospitality was incredible. We were greeted as if we were family and guided as to how to best enjoy our time. Upon leaving, I was encouraged to take a quick survey by an amazing gentleman who was happy to find out where I traveled from (Georgia, USA!). My partner and I were excited to see this same kind man was still working at the museum in July 2023. His name escapes me, but he truly makes this annual trip to the museum worthwhile. Our second trip was even more amazing as we got to explore and experience each floor at our own pace and at the end, in the gift shop, was our bespectacled friend! I'm sure he was surprised to see us a year later after our first visit together. I can't say enough about this museum! I love telling people I flew 4000 miles just to see the Renoir painting and I am excited to see what new exhibits will be there this summer.

There are many exhibits and they are completely free to the public. It is worth spending half a day to visit. There are some exhibits about Game of Thrones. If you are interested in the history of Northern Ireland, it is highly recommended.

I loved the experience, there was lots to see and plenty of space, so it did not feel crowded. The indoor tropical garden was amazing. I wish there were more areas which dedicated kids sections though. There is so much to learn but it's a but much for our littles. I will definitely be returning to roam some more.

I had an incredible experience at the Ulster Museum! The exhibits were not only diverse and captivating but also thoughtfully curated, making it a perfect place for both history enthusiasts and art lovers. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, adding to the overall welcoming atmosphere. I was particularly impressed by the museum's dedication to interactive displays and educational activities, which made learning engaging and enjoyable. Whether you're interested in natural history, art, or local culture, the Ulster Museum offers something for everyone. A must-visit destination that left me inspired and enlightened!

Amazing visit to an incredible museum. It's far bigger than you think with a huge amount to see inside across 5 floors. The staff are friendly and there are lockers to drop bags near the entrance so you don't have to lug them around. Well worth a visit, we were there over 2 hours and could easily have spent longer. There are also workshops for children and other activities available inside. All this and it's free!

It was amazing. We arrived late because we forgot to go but the staff still allowed us to get in which was really nice. So here we are starting the tour following the yellow line which get you through the history of Ulster from all different eras. The troubles are well documented. I loved the punk scene. There are dinosaurs, fossils, canons, gold coins, a mummy well whatever you or the kids want to see is there. Please it is important to give some money to the museum because they are not funded by the state. It is free but do not take it for granted. It is also on the Belfast sightseeing tour so you can hop off there at the botanic gardens and hop back in to finish the tour through the Falls and Shankill roads. So enjoy. It's one of the best museums ever.

A dander around Botanic Gardens led to a cafe trip in the museum and a potter around the shop. The cafe is great but service is slow. It’s managed by a social enterprise, Loaf Catering, who work with people with learning difficulties and autism. The food is great and the prices are decent for what you get. There’s plenty of space in the cafe and some seating has views over Botanic Gardens. The shop is crammed full of all manner of things: books, postcards, jewellery, ceramics, toys, stationery, scarves, Christmas gifts and crafts. You could spend ages looking around. Tickets to the museum itself are free but you need to book them online due to COVID so there was a queue for people wanting to visit it. Parking isn’t great. You just have to hunt around the nearby streets.

A modern museum located in the grounds of the Botanical Gardens housing global collections of art, history and natural sciences. Entry to the Museum is free, making it a great day out for the family. The Museum is layed out into 3 different routes, which makes it easier to discover particular exhibitions of interest. The section dedicated to 'The Troubles' is an absolute must.

Very full museum with items and exhibitions for everyone. When I attended there was a beautiful class and ceramics exhibitions on the top level. Followed by a few levels of natural history from pre-historic to present day, with some exhibitions including the Egyptians and Spanish. One of my favourite parts was the annual competition for the art students at Queens University, some great displays of talent. The whole tour took me about 3 hours, but you could spend more or less time, depending what you're into.

This has got to be one of the best museums in the UK! And its free! So much thought put into each exhibit and its extremely informative - the history section spanned from prehistoric to present day in an easy to follow format with great artefacts. The 'elements' section was brilliant. The cafe is reasonably priced and the architecture is beautiful. You could easily spend upwards of 3h here. Well worth a visit if you're in Belfast.

  • 5/5 Elaine R. 7 months ago on Google
Great day out for the family. They have opportunities to dress up, draw, build, explore and discover. Our 5 year old loves it here and we always find something new each time we go. The touring exhibitions are excellent too, an addition of a quiet space or sensory room would be amazing.

  • 5/5 Rita B. 2 years ago on Google
Plenty to see for different kind of interests. It was a bit confusing at times what way to walk through exhibition to follow correct time line but it was still interesting and very informative. Limited numbers are let in and hand sanitizers available so it felt safe enough. And it's free (can't beat that) but there are donation boxes throughout the museum so you can decide how much the visit was worth.

Visited around noon a few weeks ago. It was really peaceful and quiet, perfect for a stroll to escape the buzzing city. I was pleasantly surprised by the Christmas decorations and light trail. Even though they weren't lit during the day, the decorations were still interesting to look at! The Ulster Museum is also located near the main entrance of the gardens.

I spent 2.5 hours here, but more time would be even better. A very good museum, plus art gallery with many Irish works. Museum exhibits cover prehistoric times through to The Troubles. Plus rocks & minerals, natural history, and an especially good section about chemistry called The Elements. Easy to visit: just drop in, no booking needed, it’s free (donations welcome).

My 3 girls and I went on a friday during the Easter holidays. The staff were fantastic, the whole experience was great. There are lots of interactive thing to do for children and the different displays captured their interests. The only downside was the cafe. It was busy, we waited for 20 mins before getting served, and there was little left, meaning unless the children wanted a ham and cheese toasty, there was nothing for them apart from sweet treats. It was also quite expensive.

There are few areas for kids to draw and learn about history and animals. It is free and you can get the 8a from the city center. Make sure to check the return times as it might take a while to get back to the city center. Highly recommend! Definitely I'll go back!

Very interesting and historic museum, especially its exhibition on The troubles in Northern Ireland, with many illuminating photos dated by the decade they taken in.
