One of the oldest buildings in the city of Craiova, the best place to see ancient artifacts, I recommend it especially for tourists who want to learn more about the history of the Romanian country and the Oltenia area. I had an amazing experience in this museum because we were guided by the best: the pupils of Traian Gymnasium!!

Oltenia Museum is one of the richest and most beautiful museums in Romania, an important centre of scientific and cultural life. It is also the most representative cultural institution in Wallachia. The Oltenia Museum in Craiova is one of the richest and most beautiful museums in Romania, an important centre of scientific and cultural life. It is the most representative cultural institution in Wallachia, carrying out its activity in three different sectors: Archaeology and History, Ethnography and Natural Sciences. On April 1st 1915, a Regional Museum of Antiquities and Ethnography was founded in the building of the Administrative Palace (now housing the County Hall). The Archaeology Section enclosed epigraphic monuments from the Dacian-Roman period, Dacian-Roman, Romanian and primitive prehistoric antiquities, Romanian religious antiquities, old documents, photographs, medals and Dacian, Greek, Roman and Romanian coins. Ethnographic material collected from the country’s villages, such as old Wallachian clothes and traditional costumes or carved wooden household tools, were exhibited in the Ethnography Section (now housed in Casa Băniei). Since 1928, the Regional Museum of Antiquities and Ethnography conjoined with the Natural History Museum, giving birth to the Regional Museum of Oltenia. Nowadays, the building hosting Oltenia Museum’s headquarters, the monumental Ramuri Palace, also houses the Archaeology and History Section. Here, visitors can enjoy over 20 collections counting approximately 110,000 cultural items, from coins and medals to documents, ceramics, inscriptions, weapons, jewelry, manuscripts, old books, photographs, military objects and newspapers. All these artifacts have been donated by or purchased from great personalities of the Romanian culture and history, such as Iancu Jianu, Mihail Kogălniceanu, Theodor Aman, Traian Demetrescu, Alexandru Macedonski, Nicolae Romanescu or Nicolae Titulescu. Based on this valuable and varied cultural heritage, the museum presents, in a modern vision, the historical destiny of Wallachia, the contribution of this region to the national rebirth and shaping of the Greater Romania.

One of the oldest buildings in the city of Craiova, the best place to see ancient artifacts, I recommend it especially for tourists who want to learn more about the history of the Romanian country and the Oltenia area. "The Museum of Oltenia Craiova was established on April 1, 1915, as a result of the passion and dedication of some prominent families from Craiova at the beginning of the 20th century, but especially as a result of the tireless efforts of the well-known cultural personality that was Ştefan Ciuceanu".

I found the collection to be impressive, but no audio guide was suggested to me and also no tour guide. A tour guide would add its 5th star for sure :)

One of the best museum experiences ever. The neolithic section is an amazing incursion into our past... Europe's second oldest human skull is displayed next to a plethora of stone age artifacts. A must visiting place when passing through Craiova.

A remarkable art museum of international standing in a French style city-centre chateau. Unique collections. Impermanent as well as permanent exhibitions. The building itself is worth admiring: Oltenia, traditionally known as the "Breadbasket of Europe" with Craiova as its capital, attracted wealthy regional landlords who traded with their Turkish neighbours to the south and west and built grand homes for themselves in the city and the surrounding countryside.
