Contrary to popular belief, there are no hammers here. OK, dad joke aside, this museum was pretty cool. I enjoyed the exhibits even though I didn't understand most of it. I don't really get too deep with it and appreciate more traditional art like impressionist paintings. But, I can appreciate it. If the art doesn't touch or move you, then it's not for you and the artist didn't make it for you. If you're the type who likes to say things like, "I could've made this" while pointing at something on display at a museum. Then this museum isn't for you. Go to the Getty or Louve, you'll have a better time there. Admission is free, which I like. Parking is convenient, located just downstairs. It's a terrific place to kill a few hours or take a date to.

Sooo fun! Came here on a whim and I ended up having a funky good ol’ time!! Love that this museum is free but don’t forget about parking, it’ll be $8 for the first 3 hours and they do not validate. The museum itself was a great experience with a both friendly and knowledgeable staff who added to the environment! They had a variety of fun, thoughtful and moving exhibits/ pieces but unfortunately the installation I wanted to see was under maintenance. The museum itself is such a nice open space, I loved it there.

First time at the Hammer since the pandemic! Came to see the experimental Korean art exhibit and had a late lunch (bites + drinks) at the restaurant in the court yard. Everything was great! Museum was not super crowded even though it is free. Exhibit was very interesting. Bites were savory. A little strange there is only one bathroom for a two floor museum but I'm sure there are more in the non public part of the building. Parking was eight bucks. Worth a trip to the westside!

I don’t know how all these people are talking about free parking it was notttt free. We were there less than an hour, had it validated by the museum, and still paid $8. That’s a lot! After reading other reviews it seems that weekdays are not free, Saturdays are. Free admission always. The place is so serene and the gift shop was so beautifully curated, we wish we had more time to linger but we got there less than an hour before closing. Will be back but will try to park elsewhere.

Not sure if it’s always this way but the parking was free when we arrived Saturday morning when the museum opened. The exhibits were beautiful and inspiring. It’s not a massive museum but it certainly has variety. It was nice way to spend a couple of hours for free.

Interesting UCLA museum!!! Like most museums, they feature different mediums and currently they are featuring LA artists. Parking is under the building, admission is free and health protocols are well promulgated. Definitely worth a visit when you’re in the area and there are nice restaurants in Westwood Village which is just a 5 minute walk. Enjoy!!!

Great collection. Free museum and the day we went free parking in the garage. Van Gogh, Moreau, Sargent, Monet…and some very interesting temporary exhibits.

Outstanding. Something for all tastes. I didn’t expect to see such a wide variety of art for the free admission. Don’t miss the food at the cafe. Make a reservation for both!

Great free art museum through UCLA. We saw the Living in LA exhibit and it was amazing. It was great for individuals (like me) who enjoy contemporary art. Fun gift shop as well

Wonderful little hidden gem. Exhibits are amazing and it's nice and calm I. Here. Outdoor patio and eating area also very neat. I've lived in LA for so long and never been, would definitely recommend. Parking with validation is $8 Or you can look around the neighborhood before Wilshire to get parking. There is also the option of taking the bus here too. Admission is free.

5 stars for Free Parking today & for the Free Admissions!! But there was only one exhibit open today. They said that because they are between exhibits and the other levels will be open in a few weeks. So I recommend waiting to go til they reopen the others.

A lovely museum with 100% free admission. Close to the UCLA campus, this is a stop you must make if you’re checking out the UCLA campus. It’s even worth a trip on its own or as a visit to the nearby Annenberg Space for Photography. This museum has many unique pieces of contemporary art that you wouldn’t find anywhere else in the world. Also contains a lot of studying spaces for students, places to relax and chill in the courtyard with unique chairs that act more like tops. Friendly staff and easy to soak up some time enjoying a couple exhibition halls worth of cutting-edge art.

I Visited the Hammer Museum today for Picasso Cut Papers exhibition and honestly I was so impressed! It was the last day of this collection so it was a little busy, (which I didn’t mind) The art pieces were great, staff were super nice and also beautiful place to hang out and relax! The admission was free which is really nice

hands down weirdest museum I have ever been to and the only relatively normal gallery is Paper Art Gallery where there's a pencil art drawing of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. They had a "dance" show on the lion statues inside of the Lifes exhibition and they passed around these strange yellow books which were supposed to explain the weirdness we were seeing. I know there is this quote by Sia art is supposed to disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed. This museum definitely comforts the disturbed...if that is your thing. In the Lifes exhibition there was this guy singing and playing piano but he was saying and singing nonsensical things. The guy was real. The Lifes exhibition is by far the creepiest complete with strange music and things. The museum is free perhaps that is the only plus as well as the garden* Updated review 2023: I came back with someone so we can laugh about how weird the museum is but none of those odd exhibits were up again to our dismay. Actually I was pretty pleased with the museum due to the paintings and Tolstoy statue made by a Russian artist. The gift shop moved to upstairs and no umbrellas are allowed in the galleries. The disturbing exhibit I saw last time about world hunger and the whole life exhibition went down which is great. You know art is very sujective but I prefer not to subject myself to disturbing things. There is even a Star is born poster in one exhibit and another display about this beautiful woman who's an author Jodie I believe her name was. The museum is free and worth a visit especially on a rainy day.

They were squirreling balloon dog maze lamppost at at LACMA but not there and some pretty much every kind of cuisine there and there aren't that many places with that many food next to museum with the headless statue the whole museum was freaky but I loved it.

I went here in March 2020 (before Covid) —This museum is in UCLA campus, free admission, have about 4-5 different exhibits going on. Have a cafe and courtyard for you to study or hangout with friends. Cute gift shop. — I went here for my Art History assignment so it was nice to look at everything in details because I have to write about it later. —All the exhibition are unique in their own way, reflecting different issues in the society. —Parking under the basement, although I don’t remember the parking fees, but I would guess it’s not too expansive. Would love to come back one day!!

Free entry. Amazing collection of etches. Some Rembrandt, too. Picasso, Van gogh. Not all the exhibits are open at this time. However, I think sometime in February, they will be fully open. They have a relaxing atrium with bamboo surroundings. I'm looking forward to going back. You have to pay for parking, they have machines. And they have an option for food and drinks as well.

It's excellent, of course, but something is off about the lighting in the Hammer gallery and what it does with the colors... I think. The lights may be too bright, or not focused enough on the paintings, but it's not clear what the less saturated colors are supposed to do and how they're supposed to interact in the paintings. You kind of have to use your imagination on the 19th c. French paintings (we are instructed to see how Vuillard applied what he learned from Monet about atmospheric effects, but it's really hard to). My eyes can't adjust enough to see the contrast and thus the details and the depth and thus the Gainsborough in the large Gainsborough, and then there's a Rembrandt. I think darker walls might make a difference...

free admission . No need to buy tickets nor for reservation .Beautiful museum if you look at the shell of it . Its big white very large and spacious not over crowded . When you take the stairs there is a beautiful courtyard with trees , very peaceful . They do have a few very famous painting from rembrant van gogh monet which are breath taking . You can see them upclose . They are display in a beautiful gold frame . Those 1600 to 1800s paintings are the most interesting part of hammer.they are well preserved and care for. The rest was an absolute joke between a bunch of canvas cut out with all rags glue in it rusty chains and a bunch of rulers and mesurement on display. The green laser exibit look like something u would see in raves or nightclubs and its ONE big circle of laser thats it not really a novelty or anything to be impressed about . Really ?! Thats the best they could come up with ???? There isnt a lack of artists out there and many way more deserving than whats was display .... hugely disapointed . Not as good as the getty or the broad . Parking cost was very reasonable 8$ yes yes art is subjective but some feel like they are taking people for fools . What happens to skills and talent ??? Ive seen it once not sure i would waste my time going back unless they get better artists and exibit or expend their painting collection ( which again is small but stunning)

Discriminatory rule about small backpack purses “because you could back up into a painting while taking a picture” — so don’t need medication, inhaler, or your wallet! And then while you’re walking around you’ll see others who obviously weren’t stopped with even bigger, bulkier back packs than yours.

This is a lovely museum. It's small so you can get through it quickly. It's also free and the day I went, Saturday, also had free parking but check on this. There were a couple of exhibits of modern art in addition to the main gallery. An open courtyard with fun rolling chairs and a cute gift shop. The main gallery has some treasures Van Gogh, Degas, Monet, John Singer Sergeant and many more. Definitely worth it! It was also remarkably uncrowded so extra points for that.

The Hammer Museum at Westwood, Los Angeles, CA was opened in 1990 founded by Dr. Armand Hammer. In 1992 the UCLA took over the management of the museum and in 1999 the Hammer Contemporary Collection was created which at this time holds over 2000 artworks. The museum has dynamic exhibitions including lectures, symposia, film series, readings, and musical performances that are open and free to public. The museum also added a 300-seat theater and a Cafe' plus the internationally known Hammer Projects and a series of public programs featuring influential authors, artists and creative thinkers. A great museum to visit and enjoy the art collection.

Free. That alone would entice me in a city like LA. The best I can say about the Hammer is that the more I look back the more I can say it was right there at the forefront of conversations, tackling topics in order to inform and challenge its audience.

This place was pretty cool. It literally is just murals painted on a wall for selfie purposes, which I can't complain. I skipped over a couple murals though that were okay. and some were harder to take pictures because of the angles and the amount of people. It did help though that they had markers on the floor of where to stand and point your camera phone to get the best photo. Big ups to them for thinking of that.

Great idea to get more folks to view the Academy, although 3-4 hours is not enough to see everything. The option for food and drinks is a nice addition. We saw maybe half of the exhibits, and it was nice to not have crowds to fight. It would have been nice to have more volunteers staffing key points to provide more backgrounds information, as I did appreciate the one near the Anaconda and the parrots in the Rainforest.

Staff is always friendly. You MUST try the skinny chairs in the courtyard. My kids and I were so terrified at first to spin all the way around without spotting each other. Then a random guy came by to give us a pep talk and guaranteed that you wont fall. Once we got past the fear it was so much fun. It was really fun. And afterward my daughter said, "I am brave. We all are." That moment made my day.

I like to attend their talks/ screenings/ conversations. They usually start around 7:30 on a weekday and are almost always free, but sometimes the movies they screen are like $10. Check online for what they have upcoming, but it’s almost always very interesting. Parking is $7 after... 6pm, I believe? They have exhibits that rotate out/ switch, as well as their “permanent hammer collection”... fun top chairs that spin and engage your inner kid, lively opening nights with music, and a restaurant inside that I can’t speak on since I’ve only ever ordered one drink.
