founded
by
Boyang,

monk

Silla
Dynasty
during
the
North

South
Korea

Biseulsan
Mountain
in
Okpo-myeon,

Daegu.

It
is
a
branch
temple
of
Donghwasa
Temple,
the
headquarters
of
the
9th
diocese
of
the
Jogye
Order
of
Korean
Buddhism.
It
was
founded
by
Boyang
Hwasang
in
914
(3rd
year
of
King
Sindeok's
reign),
and
rebuilt
by
Cheonil
in
1419
(1st
year
of
King
Sejong's
reign).
When
it
was
destroyed
by
fire
during
the
Japanese
invasions
of
Korea,
in
1603
(the
36th
year
of
King
Seonjo's
reign),
Master
Samyeong
ordered
Injam,
Tanok,

Gyeongcheon

rebuild
it.
Beomjonggak
was
built
in
1621
(13th
year
of
King
Gwanghaegun's
reign),

King
Yeon
(王幀)
was
enshrined
and
Myeongbujeon
was
decorated.

1722

2nd
year
of
King
Gyeongjong’s
reign),
Daeungjeon
and
Jonggak
were
renovated
by
Chanhwa.
These
halls
were
as
large
as
200
rooms,
and
there
were
as
many
as
500
monks
living
there.
In
1726
(the
2nd
year
of
King
Yeongjo's
reign),
the
main
hall,
the
east
and
west
rooms,
and
the
left
and
right
shrines
burned
down
again,
but
were
rebuilt
by
Hyejo
in
1728
along
with
the
painting.
Cultural
assets
include
the
Geumgang
Stairs
of
Yongyeonsa
Temple
in
Dalseong,
which
enshrined
a
Buddhist
relic
and
was
designated
as
a
treasure
in
1971.
This
relic
originally
existed
at
Tongdosa
Temple,
and
Master
Samyeong
had
his
disciple
Cheongjin
enshrine
it
in
this
temple.
This
staircase
was
completed
in
1673
and
was
modeled
after
the
shape
of
the
Tongdosa
Buddha
Relic
Staircase.
In
addition,
there
is
the
Yongyeonsa
Three-story
Stone
Pagoda,
which
was
designated
as
a
Daegu
Metropolitan
City
cultural
property
in
1995.
