👍 Museum of the Woman of Gorée was a place where we found beautiful things made with the manual dexterity of our valiant ladies who were there. Very welcoming, they were always ready to share their knowledge. People often mention museum,

This museum is an old colonial house from the 18th century which houses traditional artefacts, craft objects, clothes, jewellery, and a lot of paper documentation which testifies to the importance of the role of Senegalese women in the social life of this nation since of colonialism. A key role that remained as such and was also strengthened in the subsequent struggle for independence. This museum is often overlooked in tourist tours of the island in favor of the more famous Maison de les Esclaves, to which this museum is very close. Practically opposite and between the two buildings is the small square with the statue of liberation. Even today, the Women's Museum continues its work of female emancipation by being the organizational venue for themed cultural meetings and training workshops.

It is no longer the women's museum. However, if you are lucky enough to meet the friendly occupants of the building they will perhaps let you visit the large rooms and the pointed balcony, as well as admire their paintings!

🫤 The museum was an idea proposed by Senegal's first president Léopold Sédar Senghor over 50 years ago, and became a reality in 2015. For its sprawling size, the museum didn’t offer exhibitions worthy of its 14000 sqm. All exhibitions, accept for the one of African woman leaders one, are in French. S...
