It is the only Christian church on the island of Gorèe, mainly inhabited, like the entire state of Senegal, by a Muslim population. The Catholic settlement on this island, also visited in 1992 by Pope John Paul II, dates back to the 15th century and was the work of Portuguese sailors. But this parish was built during the French governorship in West Africa in the first decades of the nineteenth century.
