Gorée
Island
is
a
UNESCO
World
Heritage
site,
and
is
roughly
a
20-30
min
boat
ride
from
the
port
in
Dakar.
During
the
15th
to
the
19th
centuries,
Gorée
Island
was
the
largest
slave-trading
centre
along
the
west
African
coast.
It
was
operated
by
the
Portuguese,
Dutch,
English
and
French,
and
the
result
of
this
is
an
island
with
diverse
architecture
as
well
as
a
deep/heavy
history.
An
example
of
this
is
the
Slave
House
where
the
captured/imprisoned
slaves
were
kept
before
boarding
ships
to
direct
them
through
their
next
destination.
In
contrast,
there
is
also
a
beautiful
chapel
and
elegant
mansions
where
the
former
slave
traders
domiciled.
All
of
these
historical
buildings
now
coexist
within
a
community
of
approximately
1,800
that
are
the
inhabitants
of
the
island.
