It is a place where the mansions of slave traders and the camps of slaves coexist. This island is very beautiful with its beautiful mansions, but it has a sad history embedded in it. If you come to Senegal, I recommend you to visit Goree Island.

Gorée Island is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is roughly a 20-30 min boat ride from the port in Dakar. During the 15th to the 19th centuries, Gorée Island was the largest slave-trading centre along the west African coast. It was operated by the Portuguese, Dutch, English and French, and the result of this is an island with diverse architecture as well as a deep/heavy history. An example of this is the Slave House where the captured/imprisoned slaves were kept before boarding ships to direct them through their next destination. In contrast, there is also a beautiful chapel and elegant mansions where the former slave traders domiciled. All of these historical buildings now coexist within a community of approximately 1,800 that are the inhabitants of the island.

Fantastic little island where you can wonder the colourful streets and understand the transatlantic slave trade. You can buy souvenirs from very persistent vendors and many places to eat. I highly recommend taking a ferry there and don’t forget your ID! The boat come every hour and is 25mins long journey on an open boat.

L'un des lieux les plus magique et historique de l'ouest du continent africain🤧 une visite inoubliable pour moi. Gorée is a tiny, car-free island off the coast of Dakar, in Senegal. It’s known for its role in the 15th- to 19th-century Atlantic slave trade. On the narrow streets, colonial buildings include the House of Slaves, now a museum. The 19th-century Fort d’Estrées houses the IFAN Historical Museum, with exhibits on Senegal’s past. The Henriette Bathily Women’s Museum considers the role of women in West African society.

Small but very beautiful island. Ferries go every 1-2 hours making it an extremely hassle-free visit.

Goree Goree Island is small, but packed with fun for a day trip. We think a full day here is the perfect getaway from the city. Here are all the ways you can enjoy the Island of Goree. House of Slaves This is the number one reason to visit Goree Island. Here is where you can truly learn about the history behind the island, and the horrific Atlantic slave trade. The House of Slaves is open from Tuesday to Sunday, and closed on Mondays. The hours are from 10:30 am- noon, and then again from 3 pm to 6 pm. On Fridays it opens back up at 2:30 pm instead of 3:00. Tickets are purchased upon arrival, and are just 500 CAF (about $1 USD) for entry

Beautiful and peaceful island. One of the greatest places to visit is the slavery wharehouses and the road of no return. It is our history and we can't shy away from it

Île de Gorée, Dakar, Senegal is an amazing little island 20 minutes from the Senegal capital Dakar. To get there you will need to take a ferry from Dakar’s main harbor. Île de Gorée is famous for is past origins as an essential stop on the Atlantics trade routes from Afri. The most important thing for anyone going to gorée is to visit the Slave House, also called “Slave”, a museum with a dark history.

If you visit Senegal, you have to take a boat ride from Dakar to île de Gorée. The sunrise and sunset there is such a beauty. The journey there by an open boat is so relaxing, kinda sets you in the mood for more relaxation at the serene beach front clusters. The whole island is also rich with history. Painful history in most cases but hopefully the abundant and delicious seafood found in most of the restaurants will help soothe the pain. 😉🙃

I recently had the opportunity to visit Ile de Gorée, and it was an unforgettable experience. The island's history as a center of the transatlantic slave trade is both fascinating and heart wrenching, and the Maison des Esclaves is a must-see for anyone interested in learning about this dark chapter in human history. But Gorée Island is not just a place of sorrow and remembrance. The island's colonial architecture is charming, and the beaches are stunning. I particularly enjoyed strolling through the narrow streets and exploring the art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants that line them. The island's culture is vibrant and welcoming, and I felt right at home. The Musée de la Mer was close because it was Monday so make sure to go another day, as an African I payed 2700 CFA to get to the island Overall, Ile de Gorée is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Dakar. Its history, culture, and beauty combine to create a truly unforgettable experience.

This was the most amazing part of my trip to Dakar, you absolutely have to go visit the island. It's one of the most beautiful place I've been to and the vibe is very reminiscent of Lisbon and Greece. The advice i would tell people is to remember to BRING THEIR PASSPORT, come at least 10 minutes before the boat leaves at the port (even though the time of departure will be a little later than scheduled). The food there is a little bit more pricier than on the mainland, and I don't believe they take cash. I would also say that you will find wonderful souvenirs to buy at Goree, but understand that the locals there can be a bit persistent! I would encourage everyone to go and if they can afford to get a guide for about 5,000FCA

One of the best places to visit in Senegal. This island would not be out of place on the southern coast of Italy, it’s an absolutely beautiful.

Gorée lies on the Southern cost of Dakar that connects with ferry that runs every one or two hours from the gare maritime, and is about a 25 minute ride. The place to must must visit, but this experience will leave you with a heavy heart. Goree Island was a slave-holding warehouse. It’s heart breaking to hear the story about how inhumanly people were treated in those days.

Too crowdy during holidays, and everything in there is expensive. You need to be patient to go there, but it is worth it.

Worth the trip to learn more about the transatlantic and domestic slave trade in Western Africa. The prices were reasonable, however I would stay overnight unless you wanted a peaceful island to relax on. The vendors are a bit pushy, but will relent if you tell them no unlike in Northern Senegal. The IFAN museum is only interesting if you can read French. Overall we'd recommend 3-4 hours on the island.

No trip to Senegal is complete without a visit to Gorée Island. This pedestrian island just off the coast of Dakar is accessible by a ferry that takes around 30 minutes. You can explore the island by strolling around, but I do think having a guide is a good idea. They will be able to tell you so much more than you would pick up from the Internet, and you will also have a more peaceful visit. Of course, the Slave House is an important, historical, sad, and moving visit. Take your time, wander to the canons on the hill, see the local church and mosque. Maybe relax and have a leisurely lunch before taking the ferry back to Dakar. Many of the vendors can be quite persistent; sometimes a kind "la prochaine fois" can allow you to walk away from their trinkets without feeling pressured to make a purchase. Enjoy the bougainvilleas, the warm colors of the homes contrasting with the cool blues and greens of the sky and sea. Keep an eye on ferry times to get back to Dakar to continue your day.

Goree Island is always a good and educational experience. Been visiting the island since the second day I arrived in Senegal. I encourage those in America and Europe to come to Goree Island and learn our history.

A boat in the port take the People from port to island and vice versa. When you reach there you need to pay a tax for toll. Unfortunately I don't remember price of boat and toll. I advise the visitor to visit there with a guide. You can talk with the guides when you pay toll. Guide's price information given by tax officer. You can buy hand made painting or other simple gifts.
