👍 Nice place to get some beautiful woodwork, just be careful of paying the tourist prices which are usually four times more so a bit of haggling is advised. There are workshops behind the shops where you can see the process of making. People often mention prices, wood, good, items, price, visit, shops, bargain, local, Mwenge,

Mwenge Woodcarvers Market is for souvenir shopping and a place where you can witness woodcarvers sculpting behind some store. It can be an overwhelming experience, as all the shopkeepers are trying to attract your attention. It is essential to bargain a lot, as items may be worth a quarter of the price that you are quoted initially (especially if you are mzungu). Most stores sell the same souvenirs items, and paintings, so make sure you visit a few stores to get an idea of prices you are offered before making purchases. There is one store that we found was very different from the rest. The store is on the inner side of the courtyard with animal paintings on the outside and lots of masks and statues inside. The masks are formidable and the sculptures are vulgar but impressive from an arts perspective. The art is done by an older gentleman, who is the grandparent of the lady running the store.

Great art but the high pressure sales is terrible.. second visit there and would not go back because of the annoying vendors.. sadly, as the artisans working the back deserve better

Brilliant carvings! It is important for visitors to get a certificate from the shop keeper - which is a receipt that the artwork was bought legally. Since we were asked to open our bags at the airport before departure and show that the carvings were paid for officially.

So many great finds and such talent on display at a great value. It's a definite must go for crafts and gifts. The shopkeepers were all very friendly but also kind of pushy. I would have spent more time and more money if I were able to browse without being houded or followed around for a sale.

Mwenge Woodcarvers Market gathers over 200 carvers, who sell their sculptures and crafts. In the stalls you can see various artistic pieces, such as bowls, jewelry, chests, paintings, and other and ritual masks. Most of the artists come from Makonde tribe.

This is a very nice place for tourists to buy souvenir to bring back home! There a plenty of options to choose from, wood carvings, paintings, fabrics, clothes, neckless, earrings, bracelets, lots of the local cultures crafts. Of course there is a LOT of offerings and everyone will invite you to enter their shop to see and offer the best prices. As you can expect, the prices will be high! The secret is to start bargaining of you want a cheaper price, some of us will not be used to this, but is quite accepted to do it. Example, one t-shirt, could be offered to you in 40,000 thz, it could be lowered down to 20,000 Thz. Feel free to explore and ask, compare a LOT among the shops! Enjoy!

Terrific products. Dirt cheap. Very very well behaved. But in the evening, no electricity connection available when I was there. They showed us with mobile lights. No English at all. Had to use local help.

Nice place to buy Tanzanian woodcrafts, paintings and souvenirs. Prices are much negotiable, don't buy at the 1st price you get from the shops.

An interesting market, feel free to bargain, since the pre-bargaining prices are really astronomical. Wide range of souvenirs made out of wood by the local craftsmen.

About a hundred small shops with lots of wood carved souvenirs and home decor. You can also find fridge magnets and clothes. Be wise to check price in a few of them as many carry the same items and you could get a deal. Overall good prices and friendly shop staff. It is recommended you bring a guide along to help you translate and negotiate.

This is a good place to get Momentos of Tanzania. The wood carvings here are of good wood, heavy and solid. As with every other place you would go in Africa, the moment the seller detects you are a foreigner, the prices go up. A local to guide you would help get fair prices. There is a mix of Kenyan and Tanzanian carvings, if you are Kenyan you will notice the Kenyan ones. The major difference is the quality of wood. The heavier and more solid ones are Tanzanian or Congolese. Fabrics are good too, the variety is not wide but you can get something to take back home. You can pay using your phone if you have a Tanzanian SIM so you don't have to carry cash.

The best market for buying Souveniers in Dar Es Salam. You can find Malachite stones for as low as 9000 Shillings. You can literally bargain for half the price and they offer it to you

I'm a fan of making art. I enjoyed making drawings on paper for years though lately I stopped. However, I still enjoy art whenever I see it. One of my friend went a mile further to draw on white canvas by paint. Canvas drawings on white board, are the drawings that you will see at Mwenge wood cavers near Mpakani bus top. Together with carved art using hard wood and ebony (black wood). Hand bags made entirely of hands are also available with a taste of African beauty.

Everything here is negotiable, don't go with the first price they give you. Great artwork, stand your ground or they can be too pushy sometimes. They are very friendly about it.

I recently visited Mwenge Woodcarvers Market in Dar es Salaam and was blown away by the incredible craftsmanship on display. The market is home to some of the most talented woodcarvers in Tanzania, and their skill and creativity are truly impressive. The variety of items available is impressive, from intricately carved sculptures to beautiful furniture and household items. I was particularly impressed by the quality of the materials used and the attention to detail in each piece. The market is a must-visit for anyone interested in local art and culture, and I highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Dar es Salaam. The vendors are friendly and welcoming, and the prices are very reasonable given the level of artistry involved. Overall, I had a wonderful experience at Mwenge Woodcarvers Market and will definitely be back in the future. Thank you to all the talented artists who make this market such a special place!
