A PLACE YOU MUST VISIT IN DAR ES SALAAM!! It's free to entry, even for foreigners, because there's no guy to charge your entrance fee. It's worthwhile to visit if you're a tourist, in here you can know traditional Tanzanian life & houses without going to countryside. And you can also watch some local people dancing and singing sometimes. They're really warm and they'll invite you to dance & take photos with them. Don't be hesitate to join them. I'm sure it will be a part of unforgettable memories during your Tanzania's trip.

They charge 12000 Tanzanian shillings (about $5-$6) entry fee. I am glad I came! After I registered, there was no guide available at the time, so I started off solo and decided to finish off solo (a guide offered!). They had leaflets where you could read what you were looking at (some were not translated to English. Just Swahili) you could enter the houses. Take pictures and take videos. There is a performance if you are interested and a place to buy souvenirs. There is also a chill restaurant on site to rest before planning the rest of your day! All in all I had a good experience!! No need to buy tickets ahead of time. There is no wait to get in and I recommend this for a cultural experience as it tells you about the some of the different tribes in the country, how they live, what they farm/grow and what kind of houses they live in!

A must visit on your arrival to Tanzania and Dar es Salaam to better understand and appreciate Tanzanian people and the different tribes. For tourist the cost is 12,000 TZS about $5 and for locals 2,500 = $1.50. We brought our own guide and choose to pay for his entry. We opted to do a self tour but you can pay for a guided tour. It is best to have a local to give you more insight but each exhibition has a sign in English. This place is an outdoor museum divided in different areas that portray real size buildings of homes and other buildings you’d find in the different villages around Tanzania. You can see the difference in structures depending on the geographical location of that tribe or the influence that the religion has in the buildings and family composition. Truly a place that has lots to teach. You can go inside the homes and and it’s very hands on. There is also an area where dancers show typical music and dances for a tip.

Beautiful, cultural cantre for Tanzanian tribes. Has Historical houses related to tribe origin. It also have cultural things sold. You can also conduct a meeting in the open space or on the shades area. It is very suitable if you need a fresh air meeting especially during this covid era.

Had a great time with my kids. Interesting to see how different tribes have different home although it as was just a small sample as there are more than 120 tribes in Tanzania. The small market before the museum was a lot of fun

We're visiting from Canada! Wow what an extraordinary experience my husband and I had at the Village museum! We paid extra for the tour guide which was very beneficial. Our tour guide shared an immense history knowledge on the Tanzanian culture. It's a cute village setup they have, you get to see how the local Tanzanian's used to live before the civilization . We paid extra for the local dance by the awesome group, which was pretty cool! They did an epic job with the setup of the village.

Awesome place! Not crowded at all, we were the only 2 people there, we discovered how many tribes live in Africa and what types of houses they have, a bit of their culture and agriculture. After that we watched a marvelous traditional African dancing. And even danced with the guys. Just great!

Excellent museum of the various housing designs in the African village. Also has great array of various trees and plants with descriptions of their purposes. The live show towards the back was very entertaining and the is a local artist Brana Mayige with very unique pieces. Brake Point restaurant is right next door on the same grounds. Definitely a must visit while in Makumbusho.

Such a nice place for a cultural experience. My guide Hesbon did a good job explaining the different tribes, their way of life and custom practices. Tanzania has about 120 tribes and the huts are a representation of the tribes. You also can enjoy cultural dance when done with the house tours. Check entrance fees in the photos. You pay an extra guide fee if you want a guide,Tsh 10,000 and if you want to watch the cultural dances, the minimum is Tsh 10,000

  • 5/5 Leah W. 1 year ago on Google
Really nice multitribal villages tour that is set up well to represent where in Tanzania they are located...get a guide for 3000 Tanzanian shillings. Well worth it. The entrance fees paid by credit card separately than the guide. Bring Tanzanian money as CC is a pain. But the artists and vendors take cash and were willing to take US$. Just know your conversions...5000 Tanzanian is about $2 US$. Or make their day and hand them $5. Visit the dancing group and they ask for a few thousand TS...throw a $20 in the basket, it will make their day, and if you're picked to dance, we'll worth the fun you'll have, whether watching or participating!

It's kind of like an open-air museum in Germany. The typical local huts are set up from every corner in Tanzania and give a good impression of the local way of life. Entrance costs approx. 12k/person and is to be paid by card. The usual souvenir shops are located directly at the entrance on the left. There is a restaurant to the right behind the parking lot, but I can't say anything about it. There are also typical dance performances on offer... but I didn't see any of that due to the lack of hordes of tourists.

(Translated by Google) Exceptional experience, especially if you rely on the very knowledgeable museum guides who are ready to answer all your questions. In the end you can even see a traditional musical show ... simply fantastic. (Original) Esperienza eccezzionale , specialmente se vi affidate alle guide del museo molto preparate e pronte a rispondere a tutte le vostre curiosità. It looks simple. But with a guide, and the stories behind every home in the village and the tribes, it gets very interesting. Some stories are thrilling, some sad, and some funny, but all are true and great!

A very nice and very interesting authentic African village featuring samples of traditional native African houses of several tribes. You should definitely do the tour with a guide to understand why the houses were built in certain ways and what's the purpose of each. You should also book the dance show at the end. You'll get a chance to wear some parts of their traditional clothing and join the dance at the end, which was absolutely fun! Here's the price list (all are the foreigners rates as the rates are cheaper for Tanzanian citizens): Entry fees: 12,000 TZS for adults and 6,000 TZS for children. Tour guide: 30,000 TZS flat fee (not including the tip out of your courtesy at the end). Dance show: 10,000 TZS per adult and 5,000 TZS per child (not including the tip that you'd put in the basket that one of the dancers would put in front of you from the beginning of the show). Our tour guide, Isbon, was very kind. My parents can't stand for long, so he carried two plastic chairs with him to every spot we stood at so they could sit and listen. There's a nice bazaar next to the reception that sells local crafts. There's a restroom but it isn't too clean or comfortable (no toilet seats, but rather floor mounted seats).

Traditional huts from different areas in Tanzania. The payment at the entrance is a 5 minutes process, with lots of required data... The traders inside will try, as usual, to rip you off, so bargain as much as possible.

The tourist attraction in Dar es Salaam city where foreigners can learn and see the building styles, construction materials for the local houses of different tribes. The best thing about Village museum lies on the fact that the tourist will be able to learn a see over 100 houses types for almost all the tribes. One of the best place to visit if you are in Dar es Salaam.

Great way to get to know Tanzania tribal way of life, types of traditional houses and and get a flavor of traditional dance. You can guide yourself throughout the museum, but we decided to get a guide and it definitely was a better way to explore the museum. He shared with us much more information than you would read on signs. Me. Felix is a great guide.

Beautiful Dar es Salaam City is as like other Big Cities with modern facilities. To know about rural village life style, dwelling etc, one has to either visit villages or travel extensively, mixing with local people and learning about the history of the place and the people. All that is not fully possible in a short budget tours. At this juncture, visiting museums will give lots of insight into these aspects. Here is one such beautiful museum in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, amidst the busy city life. It is the Kijiji cha Makumbusho, or Village Museum, established in 1967. It is an open-air ethnographical museum located in the outskirts of Dar es Salaam, on the road to Mwenge and Bagamoyo. It is simply marvelous. The Village Museum demonstrates the traditional cultures of Tanzania. Visiting the village museum is like visiting the whole of Tanzania and its rich culture, history and ethnicity. The museum displays traditional huts of about 16 different Tanzanian ethnic groups. It altogether a very beautiful experience. This Museum is 10km north of Dar es Salaam City Centre. Come visit and feel Tanzania to the heart. Good luck.

Seeing all the different styled huts along with the tribes habits and lifestyles was really neat. As well as watching the tribal dance Bring cash because they may not take CC or Mpesa even though they have a sign saying they do. 12000 entry plus 10000 to see the tribal dance, plus they want a tip. Change I'd like to see- I would like to be able to give the full 10000 directly to the tribal dance people. Then no tip is needed unless you want to take photos with them etc .

Excellent, well worth the trip to see this. Lots of different hut designs from around the villages and tribes of Tanzania. The dance troupe will perform for about 5k per adult, you can choose to join in the dancing! A small gift area in the car park sells art, carving, clothing and other general niknaks.
