The most historical and spiritual place in Ethiopia. You must visit this place once in your life.
It's a windy 2.5 hour road trip from Addis, but the views at the Portuguese Bridge were absolutely stunning. I'd highly recommend going during rainy season if you can! You may or may not have a guy with a handheld receipt printer come up to you and charge you 45 ETB per person, but the views are certainly worth the price of admission. I love the experience......it was amazing, getting there was fun, Ethiopia is beautiful, the landscape OMG..,....Debré Libanos reminded me of the need to find and know myself, above all, do the will of the soul......for a deep spiritual connection with yourself, you need to visit this place......there's also a museum next to it....... Ethiopia is rich in history.....
The most amazing and spiritual guide does the tour here. I was so moved by this tour. I absolutely recommend this wonderful monastery to learn more about Ethiopia and Orthodox Christianity.
The history of the monastery is great. The landscape is stunning. Highly recommended to visit during the rainy season.
Does 'The Lord of the Rings, by Tolkien' was based on Debre Libanos? Debre Libanos (ደብረ ሊባኖስ) is a monastery in Ethiopia, lying about 100 km Northwest of Addis Ababa. Originally founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot. The monastery sits in a valley, one of the tributaries of the Nile river, surrounded by a chain of mountains. You will be thrilled by the arrangement of the canyons? The area is one of the best places in the world favored for Paragliding and Hang Gliding. The monastery is a huge complex consisting of compounds covering a large area: the main church building and compound; a large museum full of antiquities; a community of monks and novices; several religious schools; the cave where Saint Tekle Haymanot lived and prayed; hundreds of pilgrimages travelling to the monastery for various purposes; and communities dwelling around the church. There is large area of cemetery where renowned church figures and people from all corners of the country were buried. None of the original buildings of Debre Libanos survived due to several and repeated blows from various attackers including the invasion of Ahmad Gragn. The current church building, standing over the tomb of Saint Tekle Haymanot, was constructed by Emp. Haile Selassie in 1961. Though excavation attempts were few, discoveries were made and ancient objects were found. For instance, it was told that a fragment of the True Cross is preserved in the monastery (David Buxton). During an excavation of a small area of the monastery, one ring with an inscription on it was found. The ring was a beautiful gold ring with marks. The inscription on the ring is tied to the earlier story of the monastery. The ring was delivered to Emperor Menelik II, after which it vanishes.
An important monastery for Ethiopian orthodox Christians. Excellent local guide who could explain so many things both in the church and the adjacent museum. The local guide was a fluent English speaker. The stained windows in the church are attractive works of art telling much history
It's a holy and historical monastery of orthodox back to many centuries. You will be received and welcomed by a lovely priest guide who speaks English very well and takes in a beautiful and informative history journey. Also, he will take you after to the museum next door. It is worth visiting only if you have much time in Ethiopia or you're not orthodox and don't regret it if you didn't do so. Also, if you have options, go on a real trip like Safari or Cultural to see authentic Ethiopia.
