Walking the old wall around Chester Town came on this little place of Spanish Tapas Heaven. The atmosphere cosy and intimate, connecting the food and people succinctly. The last time I tasted tapas this good was in San Sebastián, the key component for me is that each dish is uniquely flavoured, standing on its own with quality that flows throughout and this place definitely achieved that. Especially the Roasted Pumpkin Dish was divine and one that I endeavoured to copy myself and bring those flavours and combinations into my own cooking. My hat goes off to this great little spot, yes I will be back dragging others into the experience. Keep up the great work and keep experimenting with new and exciting flavours 🤩😊xx

we ate here last night, they take no reservations walk ins only, but thankfully we were seated right away and we chose to enjoy the glorious sunshine and sit outside in the courtyard area. our waitress told us about the specials and brought us some refreshing water while we decided. the pork paella on the menu caught our eye, so we ordered it along with a few tapas to have as starters as there’s a 30 min wait for the paella (and worth every one!) we ordered the bread & olive oil and the tomato salad. the bread proved that simple food can be done well and taste amazing! bread, salt, oil… perfection! wonderful texture, lovely amount of oil and salt to finish. delicious! the tomato salad was so much more than just a salad, it had onions and capers and cheese that was simply amazing. we could have happily eaten a huge plate of just this! the main event, the paella, was out of this world. the meat was lovely and tender and fell off the bone. the flavour was full bodied and rich and full of garlic, mushrooms and saffron. it’s a very big portion but we were hungry and happily full when we had finished. we even saved some of the bread to mop up all the lovely juices.

This restaurant has been recommended to me by many Chester residents. I'm a veggie so Spanish Tapas can be hit or miss but this restaurant really served! The best plate we ordered were the croquettes of the day coming in at a close second was this pumpkin dish (pictured on its own). The sangria was really tasty too! 10/10

On a Sunday at midday, we were greeted wonderfully and got a window seat next to the bar. Our wine arrived quickly (and was lovely! If I wasn’t driving, we would’ve probably got a carafe). Our tapas meals arrived within a reasonable time and they were divine. We wished we’d had a bigger appetite to sample more on the menu. The pumpkin dish was spectacular. I didn’t know pumpkin could ever be this tasty! I really want to go back. Thank you for the service and lovely meals.

Very nice tapas restaurant! Very quaint and cosy! You cannot book, and there was a wait when we visited (around 7:45pm on a Friday night). Staff told us our wait would be 30 minutes and we were seated within that time, so bonus. Food was amazing, staff were really helpful to advise us on what we should choose given that my partner does not eat beef. I was on Estrella but had a couple of glasses of Sangria, which was very nice. If you're in Chester and fancy eating tapas then I highly recommend visiting Porta. You will not be disappointed. Well worth the wait (if there is one) and a jug of Sangria paired with your food is a very wise choice! Thank you so much to the Porta staff for a nice and enjoyable experience, as well as an amazing meal!

Great food, excellent staff and a glorious location. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Porta with some of the dishes really hitting the spot. The tortilla was exceptional, as were the croquetas and the romesco broccoli. A great buzz about the place, just like any great tapas bar should have. We will be back again.

Me and my partner went one Thursday evening. Staff were lovely and helpful. We've been wanting to try here for a while- now We've been we probably wouldn't go back, didn't rate it much! Food arrived quickly, some dishes didn't seem too fresh. Some dishes were tasty others were lacking flavour and some had far too much oil. Personally We've had tastier tapas in Hoylake. (Can see my review on my profile) Lovely area with great character but I personally wouldn't recommend.

Just want to say a massive thank you to Vicki and the chefs at Porta for making me feel welcome and going above and beyond to make sure the food was amazing (and free of nuts). They have a great new set up too so there’s much more space inside. Best tapas outside of Spain!

I definitely recommend a visit to this Tapas bar. Great food, quick service, very friendly and helpful staff and a small outside area to sit in, which gets filled very quickly on sunny days. The day we visited was very hot and the back room was very humid, but staff were happy to reseat us near the doors where there was a breeze blowing through. We ordered a half litre of sangria which was around £10. Lovely, cold and fruity but didn't last very long. You get one small glass each, so it seemed a little expensive for what you got. We ordered 4 items from the tapas menu, olives, tortilla, corn nuts and bread with tomato. The Perelllo olives were my favourite and we left with a small can of them. They're marinated in chilli oil, but only slightly spicy.

We had the Aubergine special and the Pedron peppers. They were both delicious. The servers were very friendly and efficient. The only negative was the prices were a bit high (£11) without drinks.

Found this place on Google maps as we were visiting Chester on Saturday afternoon and so glad we did 😀. We got there just after 4 o'clock and managed to get the last table after that they were turning people away so pick the time of your visit wisley. We had already decided we were going to have a jug of sangria and six dishes split between meat 🍖, fish 🐟, bread 🍞 and potatoes 🥔 and O M G , the taste of the food was exceptional, the best we have tasted 😋 yet, so order more bread because I was wiping the dishes clean to get as much out as I could 😋. Many thanks to the staff at Porta because it was truly an amazing visit 😀 😋.

My wife and I have been coming here since it opened (when it was the smaller restaurant) and have seen it grow and take over what was Joseph Benjamin. The amazing menu has hardly changed in about five years (and doesn’t need to!) and the food is consistently amazing. Our personal favourites are picos de europa cheese, patatas bravas, marinated carrots, pork skewer…d’you know what? Just all of it. Constantly consistently delicious.

Lovely food, great service. Specials and regular cheesecake were superb. Paella was maybe a bit too salty for us but still very tasty. Staff were helpful, knew the dishes and smiley- 😊
