Beautiful historical landmark in heart of Chester. Amazed seeing the details and designs, recommend to have a walk on the bridge it is installed.

The Eastgate clock was made in 1899 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee. It truly is beautiful, and is worth a brief photo op, either when walking in the shopping area or when passing under during the city wall walks.

It's a beautiful bridge clock. You can go up on the walls and up to the bridge to get a better look at the clock itself. There are 2 sets of stairs tucked next to it either side, but definitely no disabled access as it is all stepped. Can be slippy when wet.

A beautiful, magic clock. One of a kind. Apparently, the tourist used to nick the hands from this four faced clock until they put glass on it. Not sure how true this is. It’s said to be the 2nd most photographed in England. Big Ben is the first! This clock was the inspiration behind the story: The Little Big Clockmaker.

Found a cracking tea room (Huxley's on top of the city wall next to the clock) and had the most wonderful tea cakes after walking the city walls. The shop also sells ice creams. A must on your way round the city walls. Pictures below from our table

Second most pictured clock in United Kingdom to Big Ben and I can see why. Called the Eastgate Clock as located over the site of Roman Entrance called Deva Victres. Dated back to 1899 commerating Queen Victoria jubilee of 1897. Surrounded by medieval buildings make a sight to see and is a must if visiting Chester.

It's at a good location in between the liveliest streets of chester. The clock looks nice with words written in golden color stating why it was built. There are stairs through which one can climb and go on this small bridge and have a photo with the clock

Lovely walk around here and has some nice little places to look at that have been a part of Chester for some time now like the clock bridge and it has some old fashioned lights on the wall on one of the sides which really makes it feel like how it would have looked many many years ago.

Beautiful view through the historical centre of Chester 😍 - great walk around the city - good but very narrow in few parts, few stairs and it may be dangerous in few places for young kids as not all areas are protected

My friend and I went exclusively to Chester just to see the clock and the beautiful architecture. We went from Liverpool to there after work so the streets did not have a lot of people when we arrived and some places were already close. Either way, the city is beautiful and the clock is more than worth to see. It is so pretty and you can literally walk underneath it. It was great and I had fun !!

The clock has a face on each of its four sides, and is supported on an open-work wrought iron pavilion on pylons with a round arch on each side. Its plinth is inscribed on each face. The inscription on the east side reads "THIS CLOCK TOWER WAS ERECTED IN COMMEMORATION OF THE 60TH YEAR OF THE REIGN OF VICTORIA, QUEEN AND EMPRESS", on the west side "ANTIQUI COLANT ANTIQUUM DIERUM: B.C. ROBERTS, MAYOR 1897; J.C. HOLMES, MAYOR 1898", on the south side "THIS CLOCK WAS ERECTED BY EDWARD EVANS-LLOYD CITIZEN AND FREEMAN 1897", and on the north side "ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION & COMPLETED A.D. 1899 H. STOLTEFORTH MAYOR". Beneath each clock face in gilt is the date 1897, and above each face, again in gilt, the initials "VR". Over the clock is a copper ogee cupola which is surmounted by a weather vane with lions rampant or on gules background. It is the second most photographed clock in the UK after big Ben. A must see.

Second most photographed clock in the United Kingdom. Living in Chester for 5 years. What a lovely city. It's like a fairytale town

Beautiful clock that has been well looked after. It forms part of the walk along the wall that will take you around the old Roman wall. Definitely worth climbing the steps to get a closer look!

The Eastgate Clock is located in Chester, Cheshire, England. It stands on the site of the original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix. The clock was placed on the Eastgate in 1899 and commemorates Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee of 1897.Β It's the most known place in Chester and world's 2nd best popular clock after big Ben.

The place is under maintenance as of this moment as some of the part of wall got ruined during covid times and got collapsed but the walk is beautiful and covers entire city and is really beautiful and pleasant

Walk along the ancient city wall and arrive the Eastgate Clock, I think nothing special, though a lot of shops around the clock, street musicians and performances, make this street very busy and popular. But need mention that many shops are closed

Stunning clock overlooking the city up on the roman walls. Almost 130 years old. It's a work of art as well as a clock.

One cannot visit Chester without marvelling at the unique architectural heritage of the city walls. These were originally constructed by the Romans and have undergone many modifications in successive years. One of the most iconic segments of these walls is the Eastgate clock. From here you can gain some of the best views of the city and you can see up close the Victorian timepiece which must surely be one of the most recognisable images in Chester.

One of the best landmarks and tourist attractions in Chester. The views are amazing. The market and streets around this clock are fantastic. Try and visit on the week days to avoid weekend crowd. I liked the antique shops nearby as well.

Please stop and take a photo don't walk under the bridge, take the steps get up there and walk the walls. I've lived in Chester for a while now and missed out on how beautiful the city is by ignoring this short but immersive walk. Please take the time to walk the walls, appreciate the building blocks of our society cheesy as it is are relative built something which I personally say we ignore day in day out stop and appreciate it, remember where you come from.

A nice start (and end) to a walk round the Chester walls. Definitely worth visiting if you fancy a break from the busy high street. Chances are there will be a queue if you want to take a photo, but not too long.

Is a photo stop must to add to your gallery on a visit to Chester but otherwise not much else to say on it. Was surprised to find there was a cafe up by it in the tiny alley, didn't try it but it looked nice.

Iconic landmark in Chester. Beautiful clock and stunning to look at from any angle. You can get up close to it by walking along the city walls.

A highlight of a Chester City walls walk, this beautiful clock is situated on the bridge, allowing for excellent views over streets.

An interesting landmark on the city walls. The city itself is not overly exciting to be fair, wouldn’t bother visiting unless you have an affliction for clocks.

  • 5/5 Sarah D. 1 year ago on Google
It's a beautiful clock that boats a beautiful view of the high street. I would strongly recommend that you look up at the top of the shops to see the original buildings and the fantastic details. It is not wheelchair accessible. Does not have any facilities however there are plenty of coffee shops nearby. You can continue to walk on the wall and circle the city centre or just enjoy the wonderful view of Chester High Street.

Wonderful surprise on the way to Wales and a historic Roman city with so much culture and wonderful shopping. The walk around the clock and city center is such a fun experience on your way to the Old River Dee Bridge and Wall

Not sure what to say other than it looks very impressive against the old buildings of Chester . Wrought iron railings painted black and gold with cloco faces on all sides , not sure on history of it though
