Garamba
National
Park
sits
on
DRCβs
border
with
South
Sudan.
Political
instability
in
South
Sudan
has
made
protecting
giraffes
from
poaching
even
more
challenging,
with
armed
groups
coming
across
the
border
to
hunt
as
part
of
the
illegal
wildlife
trade.
Since
2013,
it
has
also
brought
an
influx
of
almost
90,000
refugees
into
the
immediate
vicinity
of
Garamba
alone.
Despite
the
local
populationβs
efforts
to
protect
the
giraffe,
the
illegal
wildlife
trade
is
a
multibillion
dollar
industry,
and
the
poaching
of
giraffes
is
still
a
problem.
