Although it was only just after 9 when we visited, the area was already quite busy but there was no queue so we walked in, removing our shoes and then continuing to the interior of the mosque. The mosque is a seventeenth century building, famed for the interior tile work that gives it the name. Sadly, it was undergoing restoration on this visit so the entire inside was a mass of scaffolding and hessian panelling and almost none of the tiles were visible. The remedial work on the dome was complete but the scaffolding was still there, obscuring any view. We left after a few minutes, replaced our shoes and walked the short distance past the magnificent tulip displays to Hagia Sofia.

Very beautiful indeed and i would totally recommend to visit - walk around here and there, and check the courtyard. But with all respect, personally I wouldn't recommend non Muslim tourists entering the main mosque for a few reasons: it opens only at certain time slot a day, the queue is usually extremely long, there is a dressing restriction especially for women, you need to take off your shoes inside... If you are not religious or not really appreciate architectures, you may find the experience is not quite worth the efforts. But again, this is definitely a must see architecture, it is magnificent and beautiful indeed.

They say the place is outstanding but it was closed to construction purpose. I didn't have the chance to see more than just a small area inside and a limited view of the landscape on the outside. I have to rate it 3/5 just because of the reputation it has. "Before visiting make sure to get enough information to fully visit the Mosque".

Also know as Sultan Ahmet Mosque 🕌, a magnificent structure built over 400 years ago! Do remember to visit the beautiful tomb of Sultan Ahmet I within the compound. Restoration work continues to go on as of September 2022; as such, a great portion of the interior structure is not fully visible by the public. However, a must see place while in Istanbul!

An absolutely stunning place. Very easy to access. A visit won't take too long, about 15-30 minutes max but it's well worth it. One of the most beautiful buildings I have ever seen.

Sultan Ahmed Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque is probably most iconic architecture of Istanbul. Many movies and shots of Istanbul always capture this mosque. Amazing and beautiful piece of architecture. This is open to public for free and Muslims can offer their prayers during 5 daily prayer time which happens to the time this place of worship is not open for tourists. The area where Blue Mosque is also has several landmarks within few minutes walk like the famous Bazaar where you can eat and shop, Aya Sofia which was a mosque, church, museum and now a mosque again. There ate also places to eat and walk around in the area. Plan a full day in that area. This is a must stop when you are in Istanbul to take a picture at the least.

There are no words to describe the beauty of this mosque. Although the Mosque was closed for the renovation works but still the place itself is a beauty. The minarets, the architecture of the mosque and the intricate details in the construction of the mosque surprises everyone. It's a must place for anyone who visit Istanbul.

An absolutely breathtaking building. Even if you are not religious, this mosque is well worth visiting. It’s hard to capture the breadth of just how big and grand it is until you are inside. Some logistical notes: It is free to enter, and women must wear a scarf covering their hair which they do provide free of charge too. It is closed to the public during prayer times, so it’s important to note when they are.

Amazing piece of architecture that fully encapsulates the serenity of a place of worship and the artistic design of the era. Incredibly well preserved, every detail in the walls and ceilings were beautifully kept, and you couldn’t help but just stare at the space in awe.

An absolutely breathtaking beauty. It’s as beautiful as the pictures if not more. We went to the mosque on a weekend so it was very busy. The queue to get in was long but it was quick. Remember to dress politely and women need to cover their hair, you can use a scarf. Be aware of the possibility of being dragged left and right by the sellers in the area. They’d try to sell their products, just ignore them. The best time to go is in the morning. It’s a beautiful mosque.

The amazing greatness of Blue Mosque with all six minarets standing like a rockets ready to launch in the heaven, will make you breathless. Just walk around and when you enter the mosque see what means the beautiful technique of building in Byzantine stiles, even after 1000 years that Agia Sophia was built, that remained modern in spiritual and architectural building techniques. Something to admire and respect.

The Blue Mosque is a beautiful, famous tourist spot and an important historic masjid from the Ottoman Empire in the city of Istanbul. People not only go there to see its architectural beauty but also to participate in daily prayers. It was constructed between 1609 and 1617 during the rule of Ahmed and remains a functional mosque. Prayed Friday prayer during my last visit and amazed by the beauty. Lights add new dimensions to the beauty after sunset.

Top Attraction of Istanbul!!! TOP WORTH SEEING IT very close to Aya Sofia - across the park between them, in the hart of Istanbul and the most visited area of Old City… it is spectacular by day and by night Gets crowded regularly Official guided visits start at 7:00 AM in the surroundings Otherwise… the architecture… the greatness… the placement along the Marmara Sea and the Bosphorus Straight… makes it so magnificent and grandiose Not to be missed if you are in Istanbul, even for a day

One of the most stunning buildings in Istanbul. It’s definitely a must visit, keep note of prayer times as they close off the mosque for about an hour around 4 times a day. Both exterior and exterior are stunning, there is usually a queue but it moves quick. It’s also required that women cover up their heads and shoulders and legs as a sign of respect and men cover everything above the knee.

I visited the Blue Mosque today and I was mesmerized by its beauty and elegance. It is a masterpiece of Islamic and Ottoman architecture, with its six minarets, domes, and courtyards. The interior is adorned with exquisite tiles, carpets, and chandeliers, creating a serene and majestic atmosphere. I also had the opportunity to pray inside the mosque, and I felt a strong connection to God and the Muslim community. The mosque is also a historical and cultural treasure, and I learned a lot from a local student who gave me a tour and explained the history and significance of the mosque. It was a relaxing and rewarding day, and I highly recommend visiting the Blue Mosque to anyone who comes to Istanbul. It is a five-star attraction that you will not regret.

A must see! The Blue Mosque is absolutely amazing! Such a grand building inside and out. You must wear/ cover head and appropriate clothing covering shoulders, full legs and torso. You must remove shoes but can leave in designated spaces inside. The architectural structure is amazing. You have to view outside in the evening as it’s such a spectacular view. No wait times, ablution area behind mosque which was clean and spacious. Overall a lovely place to visit and one you must add to any bucket list!

A lot of refurbishments are taking place, but you still see the grandeur of this beautiful historic mosque. As you enter bags are provided for shoes and entry is easy. You can also visit the mausoleum of Sultan Ahmet and his honourable family in a separate building during the day.

A Beautiful mosque! Marshallah. The history architecture is superb. Even if your not religious it is a must to view. There is no charge but donations are kind hearted. Be mindful no bare shoulders and head scarf required for women and long pants for men and short sleeve top for men. Be also mindful of the prayer times and visit before or after those times and Fridays after 2:30pm. Try and avoid peak summer as so hot and so many people. My pics hardly capture anything.

Breathtaking mosque and likely one of the attractions you'll be visiting in Istanbul. It's gorgeously decorated outside, especially in the early morning sunshine. Inside was nice with intricate ceilings and domes. Mind where you walk because people are lounging on the floor It's quite busy here so expect a line to get in. Entry is free. No shorts permitted.

First of all, do not visit before 2 pm. It’s filled with tourists and tour operators. Our local guide gave us the trick to visit after 2 pm and there would be no quest to get it. Turned out to be true. From outside this is the most beautiful mosque I have ever seen. You must not miss the mosque during sunset and at night. It gets lit up and astonishing.

I experienced it for the second time, here, once in 2013 and this year. This ottoman architecture is quite fascinating. Its blue tiles are favorite to me and make this unique. It is almost untouched by the multitude of earthquakes that have occurred till date. This made me curious regarding its architecture. Even at the second visit I found it having the same level of awe and attraction for me. This is the magic that brings everyone come here. But to avoid big crowds ( those who come here for prayers), any tourist must visit during the lunch hour.

Along with the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque dominates the skyline of the breathtaking city of Istanbul. It’s towering minarets can make anyone awe at the significance of this great site. The Blue Mosque is known as blue through its lavish blue encrusted marble found in the interior. Currently a religious site, people from all religions are invited to visit the mosque just kindly asked to not wonder around the prayer area. Nevertheless, one can still enjoy.

Beautiful 🕌 mosque of the Istanbul. The Sultan Ahmet Mosque, popularly known as the Blue Mosque, was completed in 1617 just prior to the untimely death of its then 27-year old eponymous patron, Sultan Ahmet I. The mosque dominates Istanbul’s majestic skyline with its elegant composition of ascending domes and six slender soaring minarets. Although considered one of the last classical Ottoman structures, the incorporation of new architectural and decorative elements in the mosque’s building program and its symbolic placement at the imperial center of the city point to a departure from the classical tradition innovated under the famous 16th-century master architect, Mimar Sinan

It is a pity to visit it at the time it is under restoration works, which I felt that it could have been done before the tourist flooded into the mosque. The exterior of the mosque is marvelous, but the interior was mostly been blocked up. Ladies do note that you are required to wear a scarf to cover your head as respect to entering the mosque and no shorts. While walking towards the mosque you will be able to see some of the ottoman history left by the destruction from the past. It is a great place to visit, but there is not much to see when there is too many people. Recommended to go at odd timings so not to clash with the crowd.

This is the true place of Istanbul as a whole city. If you in Turkey, and especially in Istanbul, you have got to visit this mosque. The line were a little longer than usual to visit, but it is worth the wait to go inside and experience how amazing the spirit of this place. This place is recommended for all people, if you are with friends or families or kids, you’ve got to stop here and witness the amazing architecture of every detail inside and outside of this mosque. Big thanks to the government of Turkey for keeping this place safe and secure and clean for all visitors.

A visit to the Blue Mosque in Istanbul is an absolute must, but it comes with a few essential considerations to ensure a smooth and respectful experience. Firstly, it's crucial to check the prayer times, as tourists are not allowed to enter the mosque during these periods. Planning your visit around prayer times will help you avoid disappointment. Equally important is adhering to the dress code requirements. To enter the mosque, both men and women should dress modestly, with clothing that covers the arms, legs, and head for women. Scarves are often provided at the entrance for those who need them. This respectful attire is essential to appreciate the spiritual and cultural significance of the mosque. Given its popularity, the Blue Mosque can get quite busy during peak tourist hours. To fully absorb the serenity and beauty of this place, it's advisable to allocate some extra time to queue and explore without feeling rushed.

One of the pleasant mosques to visit. Gigantic ottoman architecture which receives many tourists all day. The view of this mosque from every side is incredible. The typical architecture design of the mosques is giving an entire beauty for this country. It's always open to the public especially for prayer. Need some dress codes to follow. We were there on a Friday. An impressive experience.

Absolute must to visit. It’s very nice. Be aware of payer times. You can’t enter the place during those. Also beware of people in front of the mosque that are trying to help you. Most of them just want to sell you something, or take you to a restaurant and get commission out of it. Make sure to follow the dress code. It is a working mosque.

Really impressive! Although when I went for a look around there were ongoing restorations inside so a lot of the main features I would have liked to see were covered over. All for the greater good of the building though so it's not a complaint. Still I enjoyed my visit, the grounds surrounding are well kept and perfect to relax on a nice day.

The Blue Mosque also known as Sultan Ahmet Mosque is very famous in Turkey. Actually the Turks people never call this mosque as Blue Mosque. This name called as Blue Mosque because Western visitor that seen the colour of mosque are mostly in blue tiles from Iznik (Nicaea) covering the mosque. Eventhough the colour of the mosque not only blue, but also green, white and other, but the mosque now famous with the name of Blue Mosque, than Sultan Ahmet Mosque. This mosque was built in 1609-1617 and through a lot reconstructions until now. The decorations and the interior of this mosque are very unique. When you step inside the mosque, you will find a large carpet covering the floor. There are also a lot of Arabic Caligraphic on the wall and taken from Quran verses. You will also see the floral pattern that said it's represented earth. When you inside the mosque, you will feel calm and relax, not because this is the mosque, but because the interiors, decorations and the colours make the athmosphere of the mosque make you comfortable. There are a lot of stuff land space like mihrab (Niche) for the space of Imam or pray leader. Also minber (pulpit) it's for deliver the sermon when pray Jumah every friday, also when pray in the Feast of Ramadhan, and Feast of Sacrifice. Also there is space for muadzin, the man to do ritual prayer or called Adzan. Also there are a lot of other stuff. When you see the exterior of this mosque from outside, you will be fascinating because very pretty and unique. This Blue Mosque located in Sultan Ahmet area, near to Fatih. You can take tramway because that's the most near to this location. When you take tramway, just need to stop at Sultan Ahmet station. Around this mosque also there are a lot of food street you can came or drop by only for eat if you also want to take a rest for a while. This place very recommanded for you if you visit Istanbul

The Blue Mosque, so called because of the blue tiles in the interior designing, is the historic and of the most beautiful masterpiece of Ottoman architecture built around 1610 AD in the era of Sultan Ahmet I, situated in the heart of the city called Sultan Ahmet along with other icons landmarks including Hagia Sophia, Ottoman Turkish Hamam, Basilica Cistern, hippodrome , several museums and old pazar!! The Blue Mosque is still functioning with regular 5 times a day prayers as well as Jumma and Eid prayers!! It has magnificent surroundings with beautiful gardens and flowing fountains!! It is built in traditional Turkish style with beautifully stone carved dome and 6 minarets which makes its unique over other mosques. It has huge capacity with roughly 10000 followers at a time inside the Mosque!! All in all, trip to Istanbul is never complete without visiting Sultan Ahmet and the magnificent Blue Mosque!!

Amazing mosque in Istanbul, Turkey. Also known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. Admission is free. It will be useful for you to prepare a plastic bag to keep your shoes while entering the mosque. Worth to visit at both daylight or night, equally beautiful with different feel. Better to go early in the morning as it starts to get very crowded in this area towards noon and evening.

After the Peace of Zsitvatorok and the crushing loss in the 1603–18 war with Persia, Sultan Ahmet I decided to build a large mosque in Istanbul to reassert Ottoman power. It would be the first imperial mosque for more than forty years. While his predecessors had paid for their mosques with the spoils of war, Ahmet I procured funds from the Treasury, because he had not gained remarkable victories. The construction was started in 1609 and completed in 1616. It caused the anger of the ulama, the Muslim jurists. The mosque was built on the site of the palace of the Byzantine emperors, in front of the basilica Hagia Sophia (at that time, the primary imperial mosque in Istanbul) and the hippodrome, a site of significant symbolic meaning as it dominated the city skyline from the south. Big parts of the south shore of the mosque rest on the foundations, the vaults of the old Grand Palace.

I cann't describe it by words. Coming to this place you will see one of the greatest architecture building. There are so many people enjoy the environment around Blue Mosque. It become a good place to gather with families and friends. If you enter the mosque, you will feel a calm and relax. You can learn about Islam here. One of the best spot to visit as a religion traveling.Amazing place. One of the best Turkish historical location. Its open everyday for Muslims worshiper day and night. People there are very kind and helpful. The mosques architecture are unbelievable. People of Turks just did not do great ruling also were great architecture. Mosque is close for non Muslim visitor until 2.30 pm on Friday for Jummah prayer. Visitors are advised to have decent cloths as it is a holy place. The interior has a calming atmosphere. Clean and well maintained facilities. It is open for the public free of charge. Worth visiting if you are in Istanbul. The architecture in pleasing and the carpet is both magnificent and a guide to prayer. Closed during services but the grounds outside are pleasant and a nice place to sit and rest until it re-opens. Tiling is wonderful. During Ramadan the mosque and garden are out and worth seeing. Free entry to see inside but shoes off and appropriate covering for women, which is provided during visiting hours. This mosque is a must-see for any tourist. One of the finest architectural mosque buildings in the world. Unfortunately it was under heavy construction and renovation that blocked a lot of the beautiful walls. It’s also called the Blue Mosque due to the blue color of the countless ceramic tiles that make the interior really gorgeous. Women have to cover their head and hands, if you didn’t bring a cover with you there’s a cabin at the entrance of the mosque that provides head covers and skirts free of charge! Shoes have to be taken off too, plastic bags are also provided for free so you can carry your shoes with you. It’s very charming.words can’t describe it.

We went there on Friday around 2:00 pm. A major portion of site is under renovation. The queue to enter was huge. The experience of praying there was a unique yet soothing. The architecture is mesmerizing. The aura it releases lures you towards it. A beautiful mosque. Remember one needs to cover her head and body while entering. Well it's most definitely one the most impressive buildings in town. I couldn't enter due to ongoing repairs (early 2022), but just viewing it from around makes you wow. Nighttime it's lit and has a nice colour fountain in front.

This is a "must visit" tourist spot in Istanbul. When we visited it in late April, there were many other tourists. The mosque is big and with very tall ceiling. Like any other place of worship, due respect must be shown. It is interesting to know that, in the past, only the sultan can ride his horse into the mosque, and he must lower his head to pass under a chain. This is to show respect to Allah.

During my visit, I had the privilege of witnessing the mosque in prayer. The reverent atmosphere, accompanied by the sound of soft recitations, created a sense of peace and spirituality. Observing the faithful come together to worship in such a majestic setting was a humbling experience. The Blue Mosque is an architectural marvel that deserves every bit of its worldwide acclaim. Its intricate beauty, spiritual ambiance, and historical significance combine to create an unforgettable experience. Whether you are an architecture enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking a place of tranquility, the Blue Mosque will leave an indelible impression on your heart. It truly embodies the splendor of Islamic art and stands as a testament to Istanbul's rich cultural heritage.

This is an absolutely stunning building and an absolute must visit location when in Istanbul. The place exudes history and tradition. The only issue is the massive queues to get in, it took around 40 minutes in 30 degree heat.

Wonderful stunning mosque! Definitely worth a visit. Visiting is free and they even give you head scarves to go into it, watch out for the times when you can visit and when it is closed during praying hours. Inner garden is fantastic

Beautiful architecture but gets very crowded on the weekends. I’d recommend visiting during weekdays to properly enjoy. It’s one big space, the visit wouldn’t take more than 25 minutes. You need to cover your head, but they give shawls for free at the entrance. Also you will have to take off your shoes, they have shoe stands or you can carry them around with you. The guards and staff are slightly rude, but that’s probably because of the amount of visitors they get.

A beatiful mosque, sadly in renovation, so in 5 minutes you visited. If ur a christian, it's same for Hagia Sophia. You cannot visit anymore. The blue mosque( also Sultanahmet mosque) it's the only mosque in Istanbul to have 6 minarets! Really interesting fact!:D Also, the carpets in the mosque are really beatiful and soft :)

Ayasofya'nın karşısında bulunan turistlerin içindeki iznik çinileri nedeniyle "Blue Mosque" yani Mavi cami dedikleri eserdir. İstanbuldaki en önemli selatin camilerinden bir tanesidir.Cumhuriyet tarihinde maalesef Ayasofya' nın kapanmasıyla beraber etrafta büyük cami olmaması nedeniyle meydandaki gözde camii olma konumuna gelmiştir . Şuan en kapsamlı restorasyonlarından birisini geçirmektedir. Mutlaka gidin görün ?

Sadly under long term restoration important for such an iconic building the mosque is still open, but there are very few glimpses inside to give an impression of the magnificence of this building. Detailed information in English on what's going on but no timescale on completion. I did not que to go in went at a quiet time would I que for a long time to see the inside probably not.

Amazing place. A beautiful piece of architecture, and you can feel its greatness even while it's under construction. Been here in late October 2020, the Mosque was fully under reconstruction, you could barely see anything (whole ceiling was closed by scaffolding). In any case, a great place to visit.

Free entrance. Check the prayers time before you visit, since it's a functioning mosque, and better you come when the prayer is finished if you are not Muslim, so you don't have to wait outside. Also make sure you are dressed appropriately, ladies long skirts or trousers and scarf or something to cover your head, they have spare covers, but I don't consider it very hygienic. For men no shorts only long trousers. As well you will need to remove your shoes before you enter the mosque.

The most famous mosque in Istanbul is Sultan Ahmed Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque. Sultan Ahmed Mosque with 6 minarets and several domes, along with Hagia Sophia is considered as one of the most important and beautiful monuments in Istanbul and Turkey. Hagia Sophia is just a few minutes walk from Sultan Ahmed Mosque. This mosque known as blue mosque because the interior is filled with blue tiles. Of course, most of the blue tiles of this mosque are currently out of reach of visitors and are located on the upper floors of the mosque. The mihrab of the mosque is most beautiful interior elements of this mosque.

Amazing place to be at. You can visit AyaSofya mosque too, it's just 2 mins walk from the blue mosque. A lot of restoration work is under process at the moment. However, still notably to visit. You can also plan a whole day in this area, there's topkapi palace nearby too and then the grand bazaar area too. Also, all of it is accessible through blue line metro which starts from kabatas and ends at bagcilar. One the most touristy lines.

How was your overall experience? Felt like a lot of the mosque was inaccessible. Were expectations met? Sort of. Will you come back again? Yes. I sure hope so. Any advice for future visitors? Sultanahmet Camii (Blue Mosque) is one of the most magnificent buildings in Turkey. The building is not just mosque, it is also a social life complex. It was built between 1609 and 1617 and is also known as the Blue Mosque because of the blue tiles used to decorate the walls of its interior. The construction was commissioned by Sultan Ahmet I. The idea was to build a monument that would not only rival with the magnificent Hagia Sophia, but also surpass it… Light inside the mosque is provided by the more than 200 stained glass windows and several chandeliers. They put ostrich eggs on the chandeliers to repel spiders, hence avoiding cobwebs inside the mosque. The floors are covered with carpets, which are donated by faithful people and are regularly replaced as they get worn out. The Sultanahmet Mosque is the only mosque in Istanbul that has six minarets and this provoked hostility at the time. Such a display was previously only preserved for the Prophet’s mosque in Mecca and the sultan was criticized for thinking a bit too highly of himself. According to the most obvious urban legend, this whole issue was the result of a misunderstanding between the sultan and his architect. The sultan supposedly had asked to have altın minare (minarets in gold) and the architect understood altı minare (which means six minarets). A second, less plausible legend is that the architect decided that gold minarets were too expensive and therefore decided to make six of them. Whatever the true story behind the six minarets is, the sultan overcame the problem by paying for a seventh minaret at the mosque in Mecca.

The Sultanahmet Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii) was built between 1609 and 1617 and is also known as the Blue Mosque because of the blue tiles used to decorate the walls of its interior. The construction was commissioned by Sultan Ahmet I. The idea was to build a monument that would not only rival with the magnificent Hagia Sophia. The construction of the mosque started in August 1609. The architect in charge was Sedefkar Mehmet Ağa, a student of the great architect Sinan. The detailed workbook of the construction consists of 8 volumes and still lies in the Topkapi Palace library. Contrary to the date (1616) written on the mosque’s gate, the inauguration of Istanbul’s last imperial mosque took place in 1617 in the presence of Sultan Ahmet I. However, the building wasn’t completely finished by then, since the last accounts were signed by Sultan Ahmet’s successor Mustafa I. The Sultanahmet Mosque combines the best of two architectural styles. It is a mixture of traditional Islamic architecture with Byzantine elements, taken from the adjacent Hagia Sophia. Light inside the mosque is provided by the more than 200 stained glass windows and several chandeliers. They put ostrich eggs on the chandeliers to repel spiders, hence avoiding cobwebs inside the mosque. The floors are covered with carpets, which are donated by faithful people and are regularly replaced as they get worn out. Noteworthy in the main space are the imperial loge, supported by ten marbles columns, and the mihrab, made of finely carved and sculptured marble. SULTANAHMET #MOSQUE It was constructed.by Sedefkâr Mehmet Aga under the command'of Ahmed I in 1609-1617. The mosque was constructed in accordance with a plan that was applied in Sehzade Mosque done by Sinan as in almost all other mosques in "monumental" sizes built after the era of Sinan the Architect, but never repeated. This is a square pian. The central dome is surrounded by a semi dome at eachi of the four sides. This kind of a plan adds the building a fulf symmetry. Inside the dome weight is embedded on four huge pillars. In order to avoid thèse thick columns creating much monotony, they are divided at the center by a band on which there is a line and while one half is decorated by tile, the other half is left as ribbed. Mehmet Aga wanted to provide a contrast to the vastness of Harim(Sanctuary)with 9 small domes covering the portico. The interior of the Sultanahmet can provide a view overlooking the whole venue from anywhere. Space is gradually spread downward from the dome. Almost all the interior parts of this huge mosque is covered by tile. The tiles of which blue and green (turquoise) colors are dominant, form more than twenty thousand panels. The interior part that is lightened by light creeping from 260 windows is bright engugh. Because of these colors, it is known as the "Blue Mosque". Marble workmanship, mother-of-pearl workmanship and woodworking are also high quality. Sultanahmet Mosque has six minarets. Four minarets with three balconies were built on the four corners of the mosque; the remaining short rninarets with two balconjes were built on two corners of the courtyard. Unti! the construction of Sultanahmet Mosque, only Masjid al-Haram in Mecca had six minarets. As Ahmed I constructed the mosque that was named after him; one more minaret was added to Mescid-i Haram.

Our tour guide told us the Blue Mosque was initially built to rival the Hagia Sophia by a ruler who took up the throne at 14 years old and only ruled for 14 years before his death. Impressive structure still but the insides are under renovation. You will need to remove your shoes before entering as this is still an actual Mosque being used for prayers.

Absolutely must see place. It's an Ottoman era historical imperial mosque. Also known as Sultan Ahmed Mosque. Because of its bluish interior decoration its called Blue Mosque. There are 3 entrances to the mosque, and after entering inside one gets shocked by the floral and geometrical interior decoration and beauty of over 21 thousand Iznik (Nicea) tiles, about 260 windows with stained glass, and calligraphy art of Koranic verses.

Unluckily, the Blue Mosque is under renovation and there’s no any signs mentioned when would it be finished. Nothing to be seen except a few part of the interior ceiling. The exterior were also covered up with construction sheet. Please check the timing before enter as it may closed for prayer time especially Friday which opens from 14:30 hrs onwards. Anyhow, once in a life time, it’s worth to visit there!

A beautiful mosque, but currently being renovated This is probably the most famous mosque in Istanbul, and is always well attended by tourists. It is very beautiful, both inside and out, and is definitely worth seeing. However, it is currently under renovation, so the interior space is quite limited and it can be crowded. Definitely view it from the outside, but it may be worth checking some of the other mosques in Istanbul for a more normal experience of seeing a beautiful Ottoman mosque.

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque, with its fascinating history and intricate blue-tiled interior, marked a journey into architectural and cultural beauty. This unique encounter left me with a deep appreciation for the blend of history and aesthetics, making the Blue Mosque a must-visit gem in Istanbul.

Devasa büyüklükte bir camidir. Kıyafet bakımından eksik geldiğinizi düşünüyorsanız yani eşarp etek gibi dert etmenize hiç gerek yok çünkü caminin bahçesinde giyinme kabini var ve orada ücretsiz kıyafet emanet ediliyor sizlere oradan alıp çıkışta geri bırakmanız için. Düşünce çok güzel . Bahçede oturuma alanı yoktu gittiğimde bank vs. Ayasofya ile karşı karşıya olduğunu da bilmeyen yoktur diye düşünüyorum ?

The Ottoman-era friday Masjid located next to the Hagia Sophia. Basically, it is Sultan Ahmed Masjid (Turkish: Sultan Ahmet Camii), which is known as the Blue Mosque of Istanbul, Turkey. The premises of the Masjid also contains Sultan Ahmed's tomb, a madrasah and a hospice. Hand-painted blue tiles adorn the interior walls and at night the building is bathed in blue lights.

What a great and historical Mosque in Istanbul and in the whole world generally. It's art and the infrastructure of this old and amazing old building is just simply unbelievable. When you visit this types of old and historical place with their ultimate and amazing art work and engineering is simply attraction. In my opinion, you never will be able to visit this wonderful house of Allah (SWT) in one tour within one day. You need to visit it quite few times and take your time with visiting it thoroughly and take advantage of being here. Great place to visit and obviously as a Muslim it is a great honour and privilege to be blessed by almighty Allah (SWT) and be able to come here and read your prayers.

I was lucky to get some peaks of the original building not covered by construction material. They do put large pictures up to give you an idea of what it would have looked like. The mosque is secure you must get patted down to enter Hagia Sophia and Blue mosque complex. Tons of police securing the area.

Sultan Ahmet I's grand architectural gift to his capital was this beautiful mosque, commonly known as the Blue Mosque today. Built between 1609 and 1616, the mosque caused a furore throughout the Muslim world when it was finished, as it had six minarets (the same number as the Great Mosque of Mecca). A seventh minaret was eventually gifted to Mecca to stem the dissent. The mosque gets its nickname from its interior decoration of tens of thousands of Iznik tiles. The entire spatial and color effect of the interior makes the mosque one of the finest achievements of Ottoman architecture. A great sightseeing joy of a trip to Istanbul is wandering amid the gardens sandwiched between the Blue Mosque and the Aya Sofya to experience their dueling domes in twin glory. Come at dusk for extra ambience, as the call to prayer echoes out from the Blue Mosque's minaret. Directly behind the Blue Mosque is the Arasta Bazaar; a great place for a shopping stop as the handicraft shops here sell high-quality souvenirs. Even if you're not interested in a browse, head here to see the Great Palace Mosaic Museum, which is tucked between the Arasta Bazaar and the mosque. This small museum displays the 250-square-meter fragment of mosaic pavement that was unearthed in the 1950s here. Excellent information panels explain the mosaic floor's recovery and subsequent rescue.

It pains me to have to give the disclaimer that I didn’t actually enter the Blue Mosque; however, its position in the Sultanahmet District is as clear as day. It’s very, very hard to miss. For that reason, I was able to enjoy the exterior views while I was wandering through the gardens and grounds of nearby sites. Next visit to Istanbul, I will prioritize entering and experiencing the mosque at its full glory—but meanwhile, I encourage my readers to do so too! Recommended very much.

From the outside, the architecture, colors, art and surrounding gardens are breathtaking. From inside, it's currently under maintenance so you won't enjoy it at all as more than 50% of the mosque is closed also the smell inside is quite bad. But you will forget all of those when you just look at its greatness from the outside

Sultan Ahmed Mosque also known as the Blue Mosque, is an Ottoman-era historical imperial mosque located in Istanbul, Turkey. A functioning mosque, it also attracts large numbers of tourist visitors. It was constructed between 1609 and 1616 during the rule of Ahmed I. Its Külliye contains Ahmed's tomb, a madrasah and a hospice. Hand-painted blue tiles adorn the mosque’s interior walls, and at night the mosque is bathed in blue as lights frame the mosque’s five main domes, six minarets and eight secondary domes. It sits next to the Hagia Sophia, the principal mosque of Istanbul until the Blue Mosque's construction and another popular tourist site. The Blue Mosque was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1985 under the name of "Historic Areas of Istanbul".

So beautiful. At least what I could see. It was sad that the day when I visited the blue mosque, they were making renovation and works were taking place so I couldn't see it fully. But really you should go to it, when they finish of course. By the way there are no signs showing that. It's a beautiful mosque with great architecture and history. We went in after Duhor prayers, but there was scaffolding inside everywhere obscuring the view of any of the artwork on the interior of the domes and building. We left a few minutes after we entered as there wasn't much to see. Glad we made it to Aya Sofia which was a few minutes walk away and offered an unforgettable experience.

  • 5/5 A L. 1 year ago on Google
The outside was nice but some scaffolding covers due to renovation. The pictures of the inside posted by the park looks amazing but if you go inside everything is covered with construction materials and scaffolding so nothing to see unless you’re a Muslim and praying. It was a waste of time for me even though I visited without queue it’s an easy in and out didn’t even take any pictures of the inside as nothing great is seen. I would come back when the renovation is done if I’m in Istanbul again.

I’ve been to Istanbul twice and visiting the blue mosque for its grandeur and beauty is a must for all. I’m always so mesmerized at how beautiful this architectural masterpiece is. The intricate details of the mosque's interior, adorned with blue tiles, creates a serene and peaceful atmosphere. The spacious courtyard just outside allows you to see how big and grand the mosque is. Just plan your trip accordingly as they close entrance doors during prayer time and if you want to go in, please carry a head scarf with you (you can also buy one from the kiosk by the entrance).

After years of restoration of the interior of the dome we are now lucky to appreciate all of the work done. There is still a little bit of scaffolding on the second level but it doesn't affect the view of the dome. We went before 9am and there were no queues and not a big crowd. Photos are allowed, women should cover their hair and not wear shorts or pants. Men should take off their hats and not wear shorts, though this doesn't seem to be strictly enforced. Scarves and long skirts can be bought at the entrance. Shoes have to be taken off, there are shelves to leave the shoes.

The Blue Mosque is an iconic landmark in Istanbul and its striking blue domes and towering minarets are an impressive sight to behold from the outside. If you don't have time to visit the interior or if you prefer to avoid the crowds, then a visit from the outside can still be worthwhile. The intricate tile work and impressive architecture are visible from the exterior, and it's easy to appreciate the craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into the construction of the mosque. The courtyard in front of the mosque is also a pleasant spot to sit and people-watch, especially during the early morning or late afternoon when the crowds are thinner.

Coming from somebody non-religious so my opinion is probably very western but I can tell that this Mosque plays a very important role in nearby religious Istanbul locals lives, which makes it’s beauty even more special. This mosque is a work of art and the history behind it is quite incredible. During my time in Istanbul I saw quite long lines to get in, but I decided to visit on a monday shortly after noon prayer and had no wait at all. Walking into the main entrance you are greeted with an open space so large that it could make even the late Andre the Giant feel like he’s a gnome in a garden. The architecture and designs on the facade are incredibly satisfying and symmetrical. Even those who don’t enjoy art or architecture should stop in given it is a sight to behold and entrance is free. A must-see in Istanbul.

Turkey Istanbul is beautiful 🤩, I visited the mosque 🕌 on a weekend, it was busy inside and around the mosque. It was free to go inside, just make sure to cover your shoulder and knees so no vests and short shorts are allow. An excellent piece of architecture which shows the creativity of muslims in that era. Almost all the tiles and decorations are in blue color. One has to remove their shoes in plastic bag and ladies are suppose to cover shoulders and legs below knees and they are also provided scarves to cover their heads. It is better to go as early as possible to avoid long lines. The entire mosque has got a very calming effect. Avoid Friday mornings when it is closed for prayers. Don't miss it.

Incredibly beautiful 17th century mosque that is still operational. I visited on a cold, rainy day and only strolled through the courtyard. If you would like to enter the mosque, please remember to be respectful - remove your shoes, cover your hair if you are a female, and do not talk loudly. It felt amazing to just sit there and marvel at the architecture and people, and imagine what life was like during the Ottoman Empire. Walking by the outside, you can't help but stop and stare at the way the sun glistens on the minarets.

A must visit when in Istanbul. Very nice Mosque and a great place for pictures taking in their courtyard. The Mosque looks impressive and beautiful. Be prepared to queue for like 30 minutes to enter. Its really worth to visit when you are at Istanbul. It's convenient to reach the Mosque as there is a tram station nearby. I've been watching youtube about the Mosque and I'm so glad to have the chance to visit the Mosque and see it for myself. The Blue Mosque, or Sultan Ahmed Mosque, stands as an iconic symbol of Istanbul, weaving together historical, cultural, and Islamic religious significance. Its six minarets and stunning blue tiles create a breathtaking visual experience, reflecting the city's architectural splendor. As a historic mosque, it holds deep cultural roots, showcasing the Ottoman Empire's architectural prowess. Beyond its aesthetic allure, the Blue Mosque serves as a place of worship, embodying Islamic religious significance with its intricate design and spiritual ambiance. A visit here offers a profound journey into Turkey's rich heritage and the timeless beauty of Islamic architecture.

No charge, but there are some time slots when only locals are allowed in for prayer. So you have to be careful, the wait can last between 30m-1h30m. You can only enter the mosque barefoot, there are areas where you can leave your shoes. We went in January and the smell is pungent, I don't want to imagine what it's like in other months.
