Type of place where everything on the menu is amazing. You can really expand horizons and try something you wouldn’t normally order. Service is also really excellent. In my experience if they are running slow they’ve brought out extra plates or if they randomly had given a chipped glass comped the drink without it being mentioned.

This was a perfect dining experience. Ryan is the best waiter. After coming here again, I will request him every time. He gives excellent recommendations and his descriptions ensure there are no surprises. I loved everything we had here. The sweet potato pasta and the mushrooms were my absolute favorite. The broccoli was great, but very spicy. The duck on toast was divine! The tri tip and the raspberry tart were just okay (I wouldn't order again). I enjoyed having the dining room reservation, the communal reservation would be too loud/close and not my type of experience. The scallops were spicy but irresistible. The hake is the only thing I’ve ever tried here that did not meet the standards of the rest of the food. It was mushy and inedible. I wasn’t told if this was a fluke or by design. But I would not recommend the hake.

This is the best restaurant in the city, if not the state, and you’re making a mistake if you’ve come this far and not booked a reservation yet! My partner and I recently dined on 7/10/22 and if there’s one thing that can enhance an already excellent dining experience, it’s a quality server. I will *always* ask for, and recommend, Andrew to be my guide through the always rotating plates at Selden Standard. On our trip, we got beef tartare, spicy green salad, potato gnocchi, roasted carrots, and a full sea bream as our entree. For dessert, we split a strawberry tart and half of an ice cream sandwich. They somehow find a way to make the simplest sounding dishes something extraordinary. For as long as I live within driving distance, I will consider Selden Standard *the* destination for a foodie’s dream date night. So, book your reservation now, ask for Andrew, and let the very knowledgeable staff guide you through a food experience you won’t soon forget.

Even though their menu changes often and you may not be able to experience the exact same food we had tonight, please believe that every dish we ordered from start to finish was amazing and the service was just as impeccable! You have to go no matter the occasion from business to a nice dinner and if you can, request to be sat in Ryan’s area, they need this man at every restaurant because his attention to detail was beyond words, quite frankly make this man the manager if he doesn’t have it coming already!!! Overall 6 of 5 stars cause sh*t!

Food is awesome. So many great flavor combinations that I wouldn’t think of. Every bite is delicious. Great place for a date night! Have a hard to impress food snob friend? Take them here. We had zero complaints.

This place is outstanding! The vibes, the people, the FOOD! Every inch of our meal was delicious and the patio dining experience was lovely. On top of that, our waiter was impeccable! He was very kind, knowledgeable about the menu, and gave great recommendations based on our taste profile! This place has a rotating menu, and he even got us cocktails from previous rotations! The entire experience felt welcoming from the moment we walked in the door! We'll definitely be coming back!

🥘🥘🥘🥘🥘 Best restaurant in Detroit. Menu items added weekly to incorporate seasonal offerings. Food and drink at its finest. Curated wine list featuring small batch vintners. Great staff. Bartenders are long timers who know their customers. Never ever a bad meal.

Consistency. I've been coming to Selden for a few years now and I've always had delicious food and great experiences. Their menu is always evolving but you can always expect a creative salad choice, a ridiculously good pasta, and a perfectly cooked meat selection. Pair it with a glass of wine or a craft cocktail from the bar (my preferred seat) and you'll be all set, ohh but don't forget to ask for their bread. Great place for a date, meeting with friends, or bringing your mom for her birthday

We loved this place, every dish was excellent, so far my favorite place in the greater Detroit area! Also the staff was really nice and you can tell they like working there! It’s also very cozy if you like cozy places! This place and Oak & Reel are easily the top two Detroit restaurants I’ve found so far!

Trendy upmarket restaurant with fresh and seasonal food. Some dishes better than others - the kale salad, parsnips, beef tartare and squid the standout. Great to take a group and share so you can try a few things. Not super excited by the wine options, but is very much a personal taste. The cocktails were delicious - recommend the Catching Rabbits.

Selden always delivers a great meal in a great environment- they have a delicious menu and a great drink list as well. Their service is excellent and the staff are very kind and accommodating. It can be tough to get a seat, so it’s best to reserve well in advance, but it’s worth the wait. There’s typically parking available on Selden or 2nd Ave. There is bar seating, a main dining area, as well as a back patio.

This is one of the best restaurants in Detroit. The chef and staff are incredible. The food amazing. The patio is the best in town. If I could rate it higher I would

We really enjoyed our recent dining experience at Selden Standard. We made reservations and sat at the "Chef's table" where we had front row seats to the wood burning oven and grill to see all the culinary magic happen. I ordered the mushroom pasta for a starter and the Michigan Pork ribs for my entree. I shamelessly cleaned both plates. Our waiter and chef were very friendly, knowledgeable and provided excellent service.

Since it opened, it’s been one of my favorite restaurants anywhere. Always meets or exceeds expectations. Love the vibe, the decor, etc and more importantly love the food. It’s fresh and creative, flavorful and doesn’t sit heavy. I like the Mediterranean vibe but they don’t limit themselves creatively. The pastas are always phenomenal. The veggie dishes delicious and thoughtful. I love sitting at the chefs counter and watching them work the open fire and coal oven spaces. Great beverage list too! Highly recommend. I always stop here when I’m in the area.

This is literally the best place we've eaten in years!!! By far. We were visiting our daughter and son-in-law and they love this restaurant and took us here. It's small plates to share of amazing dishes made from local farms and expertly prepared. That in itself is enough for the 5 star rating in my book but they even go farther. I have dietary restrictions and they are experts at that as well. What I mean by that is most restaurants you are on your own in ordering, or you can ask if things are nut free or such due to allergies but it always seems like a bit of an inconvenience to other restaurants. This is not the case here - they pride themselves on modifying their dishes so that people with health/dietary issues don't feel bad. There were 4 of us and we were sharing everything and they went up and beyond anything I'd ever expect or dream of to modify our dishes so everyone could enjoy them. It wasn't just our wait staff but also others serving the dishes and chefs verifying certain ingredients and such. It was by far the best food and the best service I've ever had. No wonder it's our daughters favorite place! Oh, and the atmosphere is great too. A must try place.

First of all, the price on yelp are completely different. Half dozen of oysters is $20. Octopus is $26 or $28. Grouper is $34. Food is ok, service is pretty good. If you have been to very fancy restaurants in NY or any big cities. You don’t have to try this one.

Terrific menu. This is a busy place, and the food is fresh, flavorful and fun. We shared some small plates and had some top notch cocktails. Kale Salad, a cheesy mound of goodness. Roasted Asparagus with wild Ramps and pistachio butter- a lovely melody of texture and flavor. Carrot Fritters that were just a lovely riff on a latke, with BBQ seasoning with a light buttermilk sauce. We ended our meal sharing the Chorizo with local Michigan Beans. This was a terrific sharing meal.

A real gem in Detroit. An ever-changing menu offering up unique small-portioned, sharable plates using fresh farm-to-table ingredients crafted by top-notch chefs. Reserve in advance, as seating is limited.

Amazing food! Really enjoyed the plate sharing concept. Best restaurant I've experienced in Detroit so far. We had 4 plates, 2 sparking waters, and 2 desserts. Total was about $150. So pretty reasonable these days.

Service and atmosphere were great, the food was ok. The timing of the dishes was a little off; the waitress wanted us to order all of them at once and it wasn’t made exactly clear in what order they’d be served. I liked that they were mostly being served one at a time, though (under the assumption that we’d be sharing), but then suddenly serving them two at a time was confusing and felt rushed. From one chef to another Id like to offer my thoughts on the food a bit more in depth to whoever may be interested: I tried the broccoli, mushroom, zucchini, spicy squid, steak and pavlova dishes. I thought the broccoli was the most excellent, but didn’t notice the coriander till the end because it was pooled at the very bottom and also didn’t notice much sesame. It could’ve used more cilantro incorporated and not just on top, and would’ve been nice with lime juice incorporated instead of on side. The mushroom dish was underwhelming - like it needed more salt or something - and I didn’t notice any espellette. The squash was good but some of the squash could’ve been cooked a little longer and seasoned more. The squid was probably my least favorite dish. It was too intense - the chili and acid and whatever sauce it had overwhelmed the flavors of anything else in the dish, including the squid itself. It had vegetables in it that weren’t mentioned on the menu, and the rice wasn’t crispy as mentioned on the menu. It’s also odd that one can’t see the rice after plating. And there were so many micro greens/pea tendrils that it should’ve also been listed on the menu at that point because it was such a big part of the dish. Micro greens are for decoration and are usually smaller in size. As for the steak.. well, all I can say was that for the price, it was nothing special. Allium sounds fancy but it was just grilled onion, and that in combo with its chimichurri and mushroom didn’t give it much of a balance of flavor aside from umami. It could’ve used parsnips or sweet potato or something in my opinion. The pavlova was phenomenal! Bravo! I would just add a little more substance to the cream inside.. something a little thicker perhaps, as the meringue kind of melts away and that in combo with cream which is airy just gives one the overall impression of not having eaten anything. The dishes overall, though, are a little confusing to me, not only because they’re either mostly Italian pasta dishes or dishes with Asian influence or the occasional South American or middle eastern in between, but because they are individual components instead of complete dishes. I like that everything is mostly meat and vegetable based, but to hardly have starches on the menu except as a main pasta dish, a potato dish, or the random rice added to the squid dish (when the other dishes don’t have side starches)? Why do potatoes have to be their own dish with their own components and flavors instead of being incorporated into other dishes with those flavors? The dishes deserve to be complete on their own and not lacking something essential. I’d also consider rearranging the physical menu a little.. beverages with its own huge section above the dessert and next to the food seems off. Chittara is under meat and fish when it doesn’t have either - or at least isn’t mentioned on the menu. “Vegetables and such” - aside from the “such” part being unclear, it’s larger than the meat and fish section, a section that is commonly bigger in size than the rest of the menu. It’s vegetables and mostly pasta. Maybe have a separate pasta section? Overall a nice experience, and thank you for reading!

Outstanding! We sat at the bar where we could see the cooks working the wood burning oven and grill. Cocktails were awesome! My companion had the In Case Of Rapture, and I had the Indifference Cherished. Both were outstanding. The menu changes regularly. The dishes that we had may not be available. We started out with the oysters on the half shell which didn't stand a chance. We shared the Agnlotti and the Lemon Chitarra. The pasta is house made and wonderful and the sauce, spot on. We also had the house made bread, which may or may not be available. Be prepared to spend a little money, but it's well worth it. Have a nice dinner, then go a few blocks and enjoy a concert with the DSO.

I am comfortable and confident making this statement: Selden Standard is THE BEST restaurant in Michigan. I visited Selden Standard for the first time in 2018 and have been a returning customer ever since, never once having a dish any less than a 10/10. Words to describe Selden: Dreamy, Euphoric, Exquisite. It awakens and introduces you to taste buds that you didn’t know existed. Selden Standard is a consciously and seasonally sourced farm-to-table restaurant. The local farms and small businesses that they use are listed at the bottom of their frequently rotating menu. The service is beautiful, passionate, caring, unpretentious and patient. The Wait Staff are all incredibly knowledgeable about the cuisine on the menu and are alway eager to guide you in the right direction. Andrew is a personal favorite, as his service is above and beyond. I recommend Selden for a romantic date night OVER a steak house (recommend reservations!) OR a solo foodie trip at the Chef’s Counter. I would say 3 plates PER person to share is a great place to start. My personal favorite seasonal items are their rabbit, swordfish, trout, and vegetable carpaccio. Pictured below are dishes from our latest experience on May 8, 2022: Warm Spinach Salad with poached egg, Rabbit Ragu with pistachio pesto, BBQ Celery Root with grits and chow chow, Roasted Potatoes with miso and pickled pepper, and Pork Milanese.

We hosted our wedding rehearsal dinner here on June 30th, and it was FANTASTIC. We had 19 guests in total and utilized the private dining room and were served by Andrew. He was absolutely amazing with keeping up with drinks and our busy group. Everyone was raving about the food, service and drinks. All of our out of town guests were in shock with how perfect everything was.

My father hates the term foodie even though he is one. He demanded I write a review for this place saying he would give this 6 stars out of five. Not only for the quality of the food and drink but the staff. Special place. Make an excuse to visit Detroit just so you can come here.

Andrew was the best waiter I have ever had. Went here for my wife’s birthday and it was the best experience! He broke down the entire menu for us, shared his personal favorites, made my wife a custom drink that was not on the menu, and even directed the heater towards her because he noticed she was cold. He went above and beyond, and truly gave us a night to remember.

Such a lovely spot! Sat at the bar for some drinks & dinner. Server could have been a bit more attentive, but I think that often comes with bar seating. Food was incredible! Amazing flavor profiles and a wide variety of dishes. The bitter salad with goat cheese was 12/10 and another fav was the mushroom pasta. The trout was good, but didn’t WOW us. Cocktails were perfect! Come here for a date night, a business dinner, or just because you love good food and an enjoyable ambiance !!

Hands down the best restaurant in Detroit. I love the seasonal menu offerings. They always bring something new and exciting to the table. Even dishes I’ve had many times before come alive in new ways. And as good as the dinner menu is, the brunch menu is always unreal. Service is excellent and the summer time vibes on the patio are like no other.

You can’t go wrong with any dishes at Selden Standard. We had all 3 salads and they rocked! The grilled chicken was so tender and flavorful. If you have room after dinner get dessert!

This place had the best menu in Detroit and is my wife and I'm favorite restaurant in the area. We haven't gone out to each very often in the past couple years so we are trying to go out more regularly. This is the first restaurant we returned to and I was reminded how great the service and food was. The cocktails were also excellent.

  • 5/5 Jordan P. 2 years ago on Google
Even though they were out of every seafood dish, I still give them 5 stars. Our waiter was attentive and excellent. I had 2 vegetables for dinner, the beets and the broccoli. They were so flavorful. Appetizers we did the grilled cheese with pickled fennel and the flat bread, which wasn't flat at all lol. It was a yummy meal but definitely pricey for the selections. $12 for broccoli is kind of crazy.

Every bite is amazing. The entire staff is part of making it a wonderful experience. We especially enjoy the creative take on vegetable sides.
