A great place for a traditional diner hot dog, fries and a Coke. Nothing fancy or gourmet, just the basics!

Had a great coney and hot fries as well as a local beer. No complaints from me! Great service as well.

Local recommended it and so glad I tried it. Most unique hotdog I've tried - the casing was a really unique bite! And the strawberry cheesecake was awesome!!

Excellent food and service! Exactly what you expect from one of the best Coney Islands anywhere. I won't get into the American / Lafayette debate. Trust me when I say, you will certainly have a great Coney at American Coney Island. I have never had a bad experience with them. Sure, sometimes parking may not be available curbside directly in front of them. You won't have to park any real distance from them, parking is available extremely close by. Visit America Coney Island and enjoy an exceptional Coney! The chili fries are great too...

I really wish they had hand dipped milkshakes, that would have made the hotdogs much yummier. But they were good.

Reasonable price, good location, perfect place for tourist but taste is decent. Not great especially the sausage. But I highly recommend to anyone.

I just can't come to downtown Detroit without stopping to American Coney Island. This place is an absolute Icon in Detroit and there is just something I love about their hotdogs and the overall environment. Thank you all for your hard work in making every visit special.

Great location near Westin Book Cadillac Hotel. Was told you should have a coney island hotdog if you are in Detroit. I was not disappointed. The restauant was clean and had that Americana feel to the place. The chili, onion, and mustard dog had a little crunch with a steamed bun. Check this place out if you in the area...its a must.

Do. Not. Go. Here. Their hot dog was essentially inedible. We went with four people and all agreed that it was horrendous. Really can’t understand what the fuss is all about, all the celebs having their photos in there must’ve never actually eaten the food.

First off: Im a huge coney dog fan, so coming here was on my bucket list. Second: I wanted to compare Lafayette and American and see which I preferred. Review: I preferred Lafayette's actual hot dog by quite a bit. More of a snap and had better flavor with a hint of smoke taste. I also preferred the atmosphere of Lafayette. It seemed more local and down to earth. Everyone was talking to each other and laughing. It was really cool. The employees seemed like this was their place and they actually cared about it, instead of it just being "a job". You felt like you were sampling Detroit culture. I preferred the bun and coney sauce of American Coney Island. Lafayette was too lite on the amount of sauce they applied and the bun seemed maybe a bit stale or something. Atmosphere seemed a bit touristy and the employees had a feel like they were just working "a job" instead of having a feel of loyalty to the restaurant and Detroit. So in closing. I feel I'd give them tie. Hot dog and feel go to Lafayette while sauce and bun go to American Coney Island.

Iconic place with good dogs, the chili is flavorful and the fries were cooked just right. Staff were friendly and quick. Place was clean and the prices were fine.

The Atmosphere and service provided is amazing. The location is historic and has lots of photos of its past patrons, and workers. The place is a Detroit staple, and must go if you're in the area. The servers are extremely friendly, and make the experience. Detroit is an amazing city with deep rooted culture, and history. The food is simple, but nothing beats a Coney Dog. I will definitely be back.

Stopped by here on the way back to the hotel. A pretty neat spot right in the corner of the road intersection. You sit down at whichever table you want. Someone comes and takes your order, and it comes out pretty quickly. The food is hot, and it tastes pretty good as well. A spot to check out for sure with how long it has been around.

We went to American Coney Island based off recommendations from my husband’s coworkers. Not only was the food delicious, the staff was friendly, and the rest room was immaculate! We ordered the Gyro sandwich with fries and the American Special (Coney dog with ground beef, chili, mustard, onions) and chili cheese fries. The Gyro sandwich was hands down one of the best I’ve ever had!

Very cool place. The coneys were good but the sauce lacked a ton of flavor. Would still come back tho. Fries were tasty and the service was quick.

Good coney Not a great gyro, too expensive and just a small amount of meat, a really small amount of tomato, especially for 10 bux. Just stick with the coney...

It was my first time here. I really liked this place, the set up, people, deco. I enjoyed the coney dog and fries. I am, however, a baby, and it was a weee bit too spicy. I highly recommend this place!

Good sauce, snappy hot dog. I wish I had hot dogs like that to take back to Ohio with me. I like Cincinnati style chili better (Detroit is good too though) but that hot dog was great. Very friendly woman at the counter too.

Overall great place, food was good and hot, service was great. Not a fan of the thicker Hot Dog skin. But it was good nevertheless.

Probably should be rated closer to it's neighbor next door than it is. Food was good, reasonably priced, and service was fast. This place was MUCH cleaner inside than a lot of the other Detroit Coney spots. That's worth the 5 star review on its own.

I tried the American special and was not very enthused. The ground beef meat was tasteless and didn’t bring anything special. Even the sauce was a bit bland. I would rather recommend to order the basic hot dog, if you want to order a hot dog. The service was a bit nonchalant. The atmosphere was pleasantly old-fashioned though. It would be great if they would have a vegetarian option (for example a hot dog with a vegetarian sausage?).

American Coney Island is hands down the best. The chili just can't be topped. The chili fries fantastic. The atmosphere is great. You have to sit at that back table to get that Panoramic view. Not to start a debate but I won't even set foot in the place next door. American all the way.

I been going here since the 70's. As a matter of fact, the dining side used to be UNITED SHIRTS CLOTHING STORE.

This location over prepare their hotdogs. Thirty or more hot dogs are precooked waiting for you to buy. The buns was hard and the hot dogs was just that a hot dog waiting to be bought. Try New York Coney Island instead.

Tried to bring my family here the other night. The only other time I was here, we ordered at the counter and got our food, simple. This time, we walked in and they said to sit anywhere and they would serve us. I thought this was weird because I thought we order at the counter but we went ahead and sat down. The place was pretty empty, maybe three other tables, already eating. We sat for about ten minutes, watching four employees at the counter doing nothing. We finally decided to leave because they weren't serving us. I guess I won't be coming back since that's how they serve their customers.

So I'm not from Detroit and believe that you had grown up eating this to develop a taste for it because I really didn't enjoy the actual hot dog or the chili. The texture of the hot dog was off for me and the chili was just ok.
