I haven’t not eaten at Midtown Shangri-La in over 10 years. I remember never really being impressed by their food. But I see that they have a rating of 4.3, so I decided to give it another chance. I was pleasantly surprised by the main dish that I ordered, which was “braised fried tofu with black mushroom and vegetables.” This fish was super delicious, especially the sauce! It has such a nice, rich flavor. A richness that you don’t usually get with vegan/vegetarian foods. However, I was very disappointed by the scallion pancake. I can’t remember if I’ve ever had an authentic Chinese scallion pancake but I have lived in rural South Korea and I’ve eaten many types of “pancakes” there. I’ve seen scallion pancakes many times in cooking shows and they never look like this. The only difference between this scallion pancake and an elephant ear is the powdered sugar. There are only like 2-3 measly pieces of scallion per slice. It’s really just extremely oily fried dough with some green bits for decoration. I was turned off from the look and amount of oil. But I still gave it a try because maybe the look was deceiving and maybe it was actually packed with flavor. Nope, the was it looks is the way that it tastes. It tastes like greasy fried dough with absolutely no flavor and certainly no scallion flavor. If I added powdered sugar, it would taste exactly like an elephant ear. I highly recommend taking this item off of the menu if this is how it’s always prepared.

The only reason gave this place 2 stars is because the food was hot...ordered from DoorDash. The rice is basic white rice in the shrimp & bbq pork rice. There are hardly no vegetables, onions or meat for $15.00. First, salt your rice or water or whatever, then add some spices, vegetables and flavor to it. The tiny spring rolls were too dark and GREASY. I spent $70 that I wish I had back right NOW!!! NOT GOOD!!!

Stopped in for Dim sum lunch, spareribs w/ black bean, steamed pork bun, and shu mai. . “The Michigan” roll was basically spicy tuna, cucumber and sauce, very good. I had great service and really enjoyed my lunch.

I very rarely leave a negative review, I'm more apt to never return but I just can't leave this alone. A 3 star just so it will be seen. Hmmm...I ordered delivery with a 3rd party app (i.e. door dash, uber eat, post mates etc). In town on business or looking to try someplace new? This may be one location to by-pass. Flavor at best is maybe just OK. I have had worse but not by much. Especially at the prices being asked. While I expect to pay a little more for the convenience and delivery, $3.09 for maybe an 8oz soda is over the top. Do yourself a favor, just go elsewhere.

The quality of service here has never once failed to impress. And the place is always clean clean clean. The food is always fresh and the prices very reasonable. I trust this place to serve up the best Asian cuisine consistently and their sushi is FANTASTIC! Go check them out. You'll agree. Its sooo good.

I am from Philly out here for a conference and wanted some good Chinese food. Came across this gem and between the fast and efficient service and the food especially the sushi was to die for! You need to come here if you are in the area!

The sushi is good. I loved the drinks they have to offer. My waiter was really nice and constantly kept tabs on me to make sure I was comfortable. The presentation was good. I love the atmosphere. Good place if you want to eat near campus.

I introduced my husband to this quaint spot a few yrs ago, he absolutely loves it. I'm not an expert on Asian cuisine but I partake in some things. The egg drop soup was excellent... crab ragoon couldve had a lil more crab in them but they were still pretty good. It's always a good experience when I visit. The staff is friendly and attentive. Will definitely be back.

One of the best places in Detroit. Service amazing. Food great. Can’t wait to see what happens to this place. HUGE menu and nothing is a miss. Today I got beef and broccoli, MOST TENDER BEEF AND BROC IN DETROIT. Great sauce very homey love this place 💕 Could use bigger seating for dinner due to wait times. (Also no parking) But once your sat, no wait on food. Can’t complain about this place. Allll worth it

Not gunna lie, I don't know if I was extra hungry or what, but this place reallllly hit the spot! Everything was SO good! It did take a little time to get the food but it is well worth the wait. I recommend you pick a soup while you wait, they come with some of the chips to drop inside and you get an egg roll with some of the meals so they can bring that early. The service is also top-notch, you gotta check the place out!

Excellent Chinese Restaurant, one of the best ones in midtown alongside the Peterbero. We ordered the Fried Squid which was excellent, the har go, mangolion beef and orange chicken. Dim sum is not prepackaged, made in house.

Most of what I ordered I'd rate about 3 stars - the small steamed pork dumplings from the dim sum menu however were easily 6 stars. SO good. I could order four sets and eat them all no problem. I ordered the lychee sour from the drink menu and would only recommend if you like really sweet drinks. Chicken feet were okay but nothing to write home about. Sesame chicken was good, nothing out of the ordinary though. The dumplings are where this place shines; I will be back for more!

This was nice and cozy. The sesame chicken, fried shrimp, crab Rangoon, sake were great! Fried rice with shrimp and traditional shrimp balls were just OK. Plus I had a hair in my soup but they rectified it and that was awesome. They get 4 stars because of the hiccup but they're food is great and nice patio seating.

The best pad see ew I have ever had! It had a generous amount of delectable, tender pieces of steak, and the black bean flavour was infused through the perfectly cooked noodles and crunchy Chinese broccoli. Service was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere / interior design were warm and charming with a good amount of natural light. I wish I could come back and try more dishes—so much looked incredible as it went by me on plates. Alas, I don’t live in Detroit! :(

Went for lunch with office colleagues as our regular place was closed for that day. Really glad we did. Excellent food, quick service and a large selection of items to suit every taste. Portions were good sized for the combination platters which come with fried rice and a spring roll. Will definitely recommend for anyone in the area.

Midtown Shangri-La is a culinary gem in Detroit, offering an extraordinary Chinese dining experience. Wanted to try a new place for lunch in downtown. Luckily we went to this right place. Lots of things offered on menu. We had different combinations platter - General Chicken, Sesame Chicken, Kung Po Chicken and Shrimp with vegetables.. Comes with Spring roll and Fried Rice. Great taste with right portion. Loved the sauce offered. Service was quick and friendly. All worth it!!

Fun spot to try a variety of different dishes. They have dim sum, sushi, other Chinese entries including classics and curries. There is also a bar with cocktails and a small beer and wine list. Service was very friendly and quick. Food came out in waves as it was prepared and the portions and quality were nice. I would recommend stopping in and giving it a try.

Great Chinese food. I've probably eaten lunch from here about once a month the last year. Large pieces of chicken and good portions. I enjoy the Generals chicken the most. Pictured is Almond Boneless chicken then red curry chicken.

I visited Shangri-La Saturday 7/23 for dim sum. The food was delish and the service was excellent. The young man and woman who helped me were courteous and kind. The service was attentive prompt and most of all I received some smiles. I’d definitely will come back on my next trip to Detroit. A+ service guys kudos

Entree portions are somewhat small for the prices. Entrees come with meat on top and rice at the bottom of container. Combination platters are equivalent to the price and come in the traditional combo container. Food was fresh, Mongolian beef taste the best to me. Restaurant lacks parking, but the customer service was really good.
