Second time visiting since I worked here when I was in high school. Nothing much has changed at all. The exhibits are still so nice and well taken care of. So much rich and insightful information that celebrates black history. This is a place that offers an amazing view into the past and teaches us to never forget where we came from. Such a shame that many of the employees I once worked with either retired or quit. The employees I met today are very nice and still extremely strict on the rules. The tickets are reasonably priced at $15 and the parking is a close distant to the museum.

This place wasn’t bad at all, a lot of history here and sometimes it’s not the best thing to see. It’s interesting to see what times were like before in the past. I do recommend people to visit here and go from there. They have a gift shop for you to purchase things etc. The parking is easy and free which make it great for me lol. It wasn’t a lot of people here but, I still enjoyed my here looking at everything.

Awesome must see museum! Take the kids. Bring your non black friends. Make a afternoon of it then head to brunch to discuss the fabulous exhibits. Tuskegee Airman. Go learn their story. Jazz greats in Detroit. Go learn the story. Great venue for events. Visit the store . Become a member and enjoy the rotating exhibits. Brace yourself for the exhibit on slavers. Look at it this way…. If the died and endured their capture and transportation to another world ….. YOU can at least take the time to learn about the atrocities! A must see and highly recommended for kids and adults of all ages.

If you haven't been to see the Ruth Carter exhibit, please go see it before it leaves on the 31st of March. It was amazing. The other exhibits there were awesome also. The And still we rise exhibit was very thought provoking.

Such an amazing and beautiful museum dedicated to telling the story of African Americans. The exhibits are beautifully done; very informative and thought provoking. Was lucky enough to be part of a tour with Mama Jatu and her knowledge, presence, and dedication to learning made my experience so much better.

Beautiful art and architecture. The staff is great, too, and the Obama exhibit is really nice. The "44" stamps all along the floor to commemorate Obama's presidency are a nice touch.

The CHW Museum was great! This was the youngest’s first visit and she was fascinated. The King Tut Exhibit was so worth the visit. There’s an exhibit, “Still We Rise” which shared info regarding our history from its origin, successes, struggles, natural resources, to present day progression. The tour guides are amazing, animated, which kept it intriguing and knowledgeable. We couldn’t see everything in this one visit so we are looking forward to returning soon!

It was a humbling experience to walk through and see what slaves had to to endure. I almost broke down and cried but instead I prayed. I highly recommend that a lot of people of all races and nationalities go and see the exhits.

I have been to this museum in Detroit 4 times and will come back 400 times. This is a very well put together museum. My brunch group is from CLEVELAND Ohio and we spent a day in Detroit and the ladies that came was very pleased and told everyone they knew about the Charles H Wright Museum. Wonderful staff and very professional. I truly think it’s not enough words that I can express my appreciation for the Charles H Wright Museum. Thank you Thank you Thank you!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

AMAZING experience for my seven-year-old son and I! We really enjoyed the King Tut exhibit, The 44 faces of Obama, The Tuskegee Airmen exhibit and every exhibit! It's really cool that when you enter the museum lobby, there's a cool echo! My son was amazed by that!

I hadn't been to this museum since I was in high school, many moons ago, but my more recent visit was just as incredible as it was back then. The artifacts, the written educational material available with the exhibits, the way in which scenes from the past are set up - the artistry in the sculptures, the lighting, scenery, all of it is just top tier. Some of it is unpleasant - and that is a GOOD thing. The way in which the museum as executed the various displays truly evokes one's sense of humanity, one's sense of empathy, humility. Museums such as this are such a crucial, vital resource which families need to bring their children to so they can at least get a glimpse of the reality of the past. It gives such a sense of awareness and appreciation. I was very impressed with the King Tutankhamen exhibit. I had seen the King Tutankhamen exhibit once before when I was very young, in elementary school, and it was just as magickal this time around as it was all those years ago.

I haven't visited this museum since I was a kid, but walking inside after so many years evoked the same feelings of awe and wonder that I felt back then. With the additions of the Barack Obama 44 exhibit and King Tut exhibit (here for a limited time) the African American History Museum has become a great place for everyone to learn about the black leaders that have shaped this country and the African American experience. Highly recommend!

Visiting from Toronto and eager to visit the musem. Great place! Amazing exhibits. My sister and I loved the traveling through civilization and the green book exhibit. Overall, all the exhibits were amazing. Great showcase of local talent. So interactive and you will learn ALOT. Staff is very welcoming and pleasant (thank you Nancy!). Make sure to visit their gift shop. We bought gifts for friends and family.

A beautiful place to learn about humankind's mistakes. A very deep and powerful history takes you to wrong doings from the past, offering in the same time the key to avoid them in the future. The staff was very professional and helpful. You can use a guide, but the gallery is self explanatory. Don't miss it if you are in Detroit!

Being a lover of Egyptian things, when I heard about the King Tut exhibition I knew I had to visit!! (7/20/22) The displays were amazing! I was excited to be able to take a pictures as long as my flash wasn't on. The 2nd exhibition called "And We Still Rise" was outstanding and very well put together in my opinion. Parts of the displays were very emotional but crucial to telling the Black Experience. Planning a 2nd visit to see the Tuskegee Airmen and the Obama exhibitions! Friendly staff!

The main exhibit was spectacular, to see the timeline of Africans to America as slaves and previous. The site also allowed you to see the timeline for Detroit parallel Africans and African Americans which was fleshing. The site featured audio and visual displays! Very eye opening and sobering! And the dome is echoing sound is powerful and can be felt throughout your body.

An absolutely unforgettable experience! I don’t even have the words fitting to describe this place. The history and culture that my family learned in the few hours we were there was inexhaustible. I only wish we would’ve been able to have the guided tour experience to gain even more knowledge. The exhibits perfectly depicted African American history in chronological order. There were videos throughout, giving more context to particular displays which was appreciated. My family was in awe the entirety of our visit. I highly recommend this experience!!!

Please check this museum out of you're visiting Detroit and need something to do. You will learn so much about the history of African Americans and the culture that was taken away and reborn. I had the option of going to the Institute of Arts, but I'm so glad I chose this museum instead.

It is a different style of museum, it is like a wax museum that tell you the story of the slaves since they were in scrubs, how they came to the USA and then when they got their freedom. Also, it is expensive if you compare it vs the other museums that are near this one, and they don't give student discount.

If you are interested in black history, or history in general, this is an excellent choice for you to visit. The And Still We Rise exhibit is very moving and has spellbound detail to it. You will be moved. The Michigan Green Book special exhibit was great as well. I have read the book and seen the movie so it was nice to see the Michigan focus- I especially liked the Idelwild Resort video. As a person who is fond of traveling it was cool to see and hear the stories of past black vacationers. What really stood out about my visit was the ultra friendly staff I came in contact with. I could really tell they enjoy working there.

A must see stop for anyone visiting Detroit. The "Still I Rise" exhibit is great. The King Tut exhibit is a must see. It is one of the priciest museums I've visited throughout the world, but it was worth the cost of admission.

It is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in African American history and culture. The museum is dedicated to preserving and presenting the experiences and contributions of African Americans, with a particular emphasis on the Detroit area. One of the things that immediately stands out about the Museum is its size. The building is massive, and there are multiple floors and exhibits to explore. Despite its size, however, the museum feels very welcoming and accessible, with friendly staff members and clear signage to guide visitors through the exhibits. The exhibits themselves are incredibly well-curated and informative. They cover a wide range of topics, from the history of slavery and the Civil Rights Movement to the arts and culture of the African American community. One of the standout exhibits is "And Still We Rise," which tells the story of African Americans from slavery to the present day through a series of multimedia displays and artifacts. Other notable exhibits include "Inspiring Minds: African Americans in Science and Technology" and "The Black Church in America." Throughout the museum, there are opportunities to listen to oral histories, participate in interactive exhibits, and engage with multimedia displays. This approach makes the museum's exhibits feel particularly impactful and memorable.

The experience here is informative and worth the visit. The museum is beautiful in decor and offers a variety of African American past, & present information to stimulate your mind and allow you to reflect on what our ancestors went through long before we were thought of. Take a stroll down the past of our culture and see what amazing things you will learn!

Very nice museum with thoughtful exhibits. Some of the interactive exhibits were hands off due to COVID protocols but we still enjoyed the journey from Africa through the Civil Rights movement. We did spend some time reading the information on all of the exhibits and it took us about an hour and a half to get through everything.

The exhibits are an honest look at the past. The journey from Africa through slave ship to the sale of people was creative and an emotional journey. I wish the area with contributions of African Americans was a bit larger, but space is limited - the layout here was amazing as well. The special exhibit, King Tut, was interesting and I look forward to going back to see other special exhibits in the future.

The museum is quite impressive. Not only does it provide a detailed account of the African American experience from the days of slavery, but it has an in-depth view into Detroit’s own rich and diverse history. I’m very happy my family and I came during our time in Detroit. We left with a level of knowledge we did not have before and a renewed sense of the importance of allyship between marginalized communities to ensure equity for all.

While it is a great venue, I would suggest calling ahead. Our group was not able to see the whole museum during normal business hours because they were closing early for a wedding. We had purchased tickets ahead of time online but could only explore the museum for 45 minutes because of the early closure. There was no indication this was occurring when purchasing tickets, and several in our group were disappointed. The venue can obviously be rented out, so I would call ahead to verify availability. Other than the lack of notice and short visit, everything was beautiful and staff were nice.
