This place is awesome, even as an adult. A lot of exhibits are old school science lessons. But, the new exhibits are very educational, yet fun and hands on. The 4D experience movies are fun as well, about 30 min long. If you haven't been here in a while, you owe it to yourself to get reacquainted with this long time staple of Detroit.

This place combines fun, learning and creativity for all age groups. The membership options are recommended instead of a daily admission ticket. Parking can be hard to find depending on the day, we didn’t face any on a Sunday!

The kids had so much fun! We spent 3 hours exploring the hands on exhibits. There’s so much to do and it wasn’t crowded for a Saturday afternoon. There isn’t food available but you can door dash or walk to a spot near by and bring it back.

It's a great place for kids to explore... My problem is the planetarium. It completely sucked the life out of me. I remember them being a immersive experience with the sound and the full projection, showing stars and constellations. Now it a 2d movies only using 1/4 of the screen. Disappointing, Also if you are Christian you gonna have a problem explaining it to your kids after the film because it supports the big bang theory when I believe God created the world with his Word.

Our first time there and the kids loved it. The admission is affiliated with an annual membership at Cranbrook so it costed us nothing. The venue is huge and, fortunately, we did not have enough time to check out everything. I say fortunately because that only means we'll be going back there again soon.

Honestly, I'm really disappointed. Expected the same level of fun and interesting as Ann Arbor Hands On Museum, but this place wasn't even close. We didn't visit the planetarium. So, maybe that's nice, but the actual museum leaves a lot to be desired. Many activities are missing parts/not working. Other areas just desolate. The things that were operating properly were geared towards very small children. For this to be considered part of the Smithsonian family is sad. I've been to the Smithsonian museums in D.C. and this is in no way comparable. I hope they work on this place. Also, the wheelchair ramp is so steep that I had to have a stranger push me up it. Terrible design.

This is a really great experience for kids under 15. There are some cool things to do for the older folks. There great photo opportunities here. The food is expensive. We went to the Sound Scapes planetarium show and it was geared for children under 10 which was fine, but it wasn't great. It was just being projected on the dome. It was also ridiculously hot in the whole building. I don't think their AC was turned on yet, but after a couple hours it was awful. Again, it was a cool experience for the kids.

We spent about 3 hours here. This museum is very instructive especially for kids, they can experience science in an interactive way and have fun at the same time. But adults won't be bored either. Admission is $18 for adults and $9 for children. They have their parking lot but most of the time it is full. Have fun!

We used to love the science center but haven’t been in probably 5 years. Went today and the state of the center is just sad. Many exhibits closed, tons and tons of things not working. The planetarium is no longer full screen. No more Kids Town which was always a popular thing. We paid $65 for our visit and I feel like it was a complete waste. I will say that the staff were all wonderful, friendly, and great with the kids. There are a ton of companies who would donate to get the center back up and running. Whoever is running the center and responsible for funding needs a new plan. It would be so sad for our community to lose what was one such a special place.

Enjoyed our time here exploring all the floors and exhibits. Can't wait till they remolded from the water damage because the little stores were not here when we went so that was a little bummed about but no the less we had a blast exploring all the exhibits. And experiments trying to make things as well.. Can't wait to come back.

Hidden gem. Never heard of it until I visited. I'm sure under normal circumstances it's a great facility. Under covid lots of exhibits are closed or restricted. Still lots to see. Focus is on industrial science. Friendly helpful staff. Will visit again after the pandemic.

I’ve been a member for three years in a row now with two boys ages 6 and 5 at the time of this review and they absolute love coming here, especially in the Winter time as our homeschool field trip day. The zoo is reserved for the Summer of course but we still make a point to stop by the science museum throughout the year. They always have so much going on with new theatre experiences each season and new ideas for the entire fourth floor making it new and exciting for the kids. We love it! Keep up the great work guys!

To be honest it's not worth the price paid for admission. A large amount of exhibits were broken or tagged out of order and others that weren't just didn't work. The exhibits they did have were ok but not exciting enough to keep the kids interested. All 4 kids lost interest rather quickly and we didn't end up staying very long. All in all it was a disappointment. The ones in Toledo, Midland, and Lansing are all way better.

Although it was a free day, I made a donation for the day. A 3rd of the exhibits were not working. As we were leaving, I stopped into the gift shop. My daughter asked for two dollars in change; the woman told her she couldn't make change. While we were paying for our merchandise, another gentleman walked up to the check out in front of everyone else and asked for change for a dollar. She was able to give it to him and then turned to my daughter and told her she could only give her a dollar in change. When we got home and looked in our souvenir bag, the woman failed to put my grandson's souvenir in the bag. My recommendation is if you feel the need to go. Then, make it on a free day. With no donation.

We visited for the first time this past weekend. We were super excited to take our kids but were a little disappointed when we left. A lot of the exhibits were closed off. I understand Covid changed the way businesses are run now but if you're going to close down so much, you should at least make sure the activities that are open are running properly. It seemed like every exhibit had something not working. It looked run down like no one was maintaining anything.

Gated parking next door. $7. We paid less at counter because we are members of a reciprocal museum. Busy, but not bad. Lots of hands-on activities, some cool science demonstrations, a couple of theaters which cost extra. Our teen and tween had fun.

Always a fun time, especially with little ones. Lots of things to see and do, including the IMAX planetarium. It is noisy, not sure if they have sensory friendly days. If you do end up eating there the food was mostly snack level fairly health and well priced.

This is a nice science museum. I went here while I was in Detroit and was satisfied with my experience. This museum has exhibits about how cars are made, how concrete is made, an IMAX theatre with lots of seats, and a regular cinema with lots of seats. Next to the IMAX theatre is an exhibit about nanotechnology, which is pretty cool. The museum also has a restaurant where you can buy a meal for $1. That’s extremely cheap. I gave this museum five stars because it had nice exhibits and it’s very cheap.

Unfortunately, this was a miss for me. The best part was the 3rd floor popology. The rest is kinda blah. They need to rehab the facility. There was a demonstration of something at the science stage and the worker talked so fast, I could barely understand her. I don’t know how kids could get anything from that besides the visual aspect. I think there is more bad than good here and for the cost, it’s completely overpriced. Save your money and walk around the DÍA or another museum.

This is a great place especially for kids. Unfortunately a lot of areas were closed and some exhibits were being rebuilt. We did not have enough time for the Planetarium. Also the snack bar was gone and we missed the coffee. Still worth a visit.

I hadn’t been to the Michigan Science Center since I was in 3rd grade, and never really considered ever going as an adult. However, I was invited to their annual Halloween After Dark (21+) event and had a blast! The Science Center was full of fun activities, hands-on exhibits, and games for patrons of any age. Additionally, the live demonstrations were quite knowledgeable and entertaining. I definitely recommend the Science Center for a either any group-size!

Facility was clean, staff was friendly. A lot of cool exhibits, a lot of work in progress as well. Top floor is great for the kids. We will be returning to see the newer exhibits when they are complete

  • 3/5 Aaron O. 1 year ago on Google
It was pretty cool, though I think we still prefer the Hands On Museum in Ann Arbor. This place was a bit bigger, but the quality of the displays was a lot more hit-or-miss. A handful of things simply weren't functional, which is a bummer. I like the idea of the planetarium, but that's not working right now either, apparently. So we sat in for an interactive video which was kind of cool, minus the teenagers in front of us FACETIMING THEIR FRIENDS. I mean come on, this isn't necessarily the fault of the establishment but it was hugely obnoxious. The staff was also a very mixed bag. Some of them were super friendly and helpful, others were practically catatonic. Upstairs, the video game room was a highlight. There were even things cool enough to pull my kids away from the big-screen Minecraft! Ultimately, though, I'd rather head to the Hands On in Ann Arbor, or for the pinnacle of youth science centers, the Imagination Station (formerly CoSi) in Toledo.

Absolutely worth the time and money! We attended a sensory friendly day on Saturday and our kids loved everything there. Very educational for all ages groups. The staff was friendly and kind and some where wiping things down every so often, necessary nowadays. Parking can be a headache. Very limited parking close to the building. Be aware and plan accordingly especially if you have young children.

lots of exciting, hands-on exhibits for children [and adults]. even with several school groups, it i was easy to navigate & didn't feel overly crowded. the imax offerings were interesting & the theater was comfortable. there are several elevators, so accessibility isn't an issue. on-site parking fills quickly, but there is plenty of street & ramp parking nearby. food & beverage options are very limited so if you have children that like to graze frequently, bring your own snacks.

While this place is definitely more geared towards kids, adults can have fun too! They have 3 floors full of different activities to teach you about all kinds of different things! There's also an IMAX theater and a Planetarium - though those do cost extra. For those with much younger kids they have a safe area with activities geared towards them. Absolutely worth the visit!

The Michigan Science Center was a fun experience, but is geared more towards school aged kids. Both my 4 year old and 13 year old had fun and enjoyed the exhibits. Expect to spend 2-4 hours exploring to see all of the exhibits, more time if you purchase planetarium or theater shows. There's a farmer's fridge and cookie vending machine and a place with tables and chairs to sit and rest/have lunch. Buy your tickets online and save time, there was a considerable line to get in.

This place is wonderful and they have done a great job reopening and providing value to their members during the Covid pandemic even adding a new exhibit on the 3rd floor. Julia and Dan were fantastic and went above and beyond to engage the kids throughout our visit and in multiple exhibits. They have an iMAX theater, planetarium, and 4D theater all of which are wonderful. The kids favorite attraction was the electricity show.

  • 3/5 Kaitlyn M. 2 years ago on Google
Fun, but forgettable. I remember going when I was about 7, but I don't remember much about the experience. I mostly remember being bored and complaining about homework. Word of advice: If you want your kids to get anything out of it, don't bring a worksheet as a homework assignment. Let them find wonder without giving them anxiety. Those experiences stick more to the long-term memory.

We specifically visited on a day that is free for BOA customers and it was closed for a private event. Nothing was posted on the calendar or website. My daughter was VERY dissapointed, luckily there is plenty to do downtown. Closing on a weekend day (and a weekend day that is promised to specific visitors no less) seems like really poor planning. At the very least have the courtesy to post it somewhere, not just stick a note on the door.

The entire center is in a pretty unfortunate state. Around half of the exhibits are closed or in enough disrepair that they were effectively nonfunctional. This was particularly the case with the more interactive displays. The only bright part of the experience was the semi-regular science show. It was clearly aimed at young children, but enjoyable enough as adults.
