I've been extremely impressed by the level of attentiveness and caring I've had displayed towards me. The facility itself is awesome, but the staff is even better! Been going here for three years and love it! I feel that the VA has done a 180 degree turnaround since I last went to the old Allen Park hospital some 30 years ago, that was a nightmare experience! I really couldn't ask for better treatment, thank you all!

Detroit VA Doctors in Therapy are the worst, barely conscious. Nursing staff and everyone else is great! After heart attack and surgery at Beaumont Hospital I'm here for Rehab., Physical THERAPY. My coronary surgeon and the PT staff at Beaumont Hospital have said that I NEED to get Rehab. The VA doctor wants to discharge me to go home without even one day of rehabilitating with physical Therapy. I can't even get into my house because I am not able to get up the steps. I can't get out of my bed unassisted. Can't use the bathroom unassisted. Can't leave the house unassisted. But hope to do all of this soon with the Rehab that was recommended by professionals. This place is the world's WORST place to get the treatment needed. Maybe just the Therapy department. The NURSES Here are VERY GOOD and very professional. Did I mention that the Therapy department is the very worst I have ever seen. I didn't know that in advance so I am posting this review to inform others about this experience.

The quality of service here is so inconsistent. I've been coming here on and off over the last eight years. My experiences vary drastically. Some days, I have amazing interactions with people who are prompt, punctual, and professional. About the same percentage of my interactions are completely the opposite. There are some days where I've try to call the Detroit VA and no one will answer all day. Like today for example. They won't answer. You can call them with anything, and you will either get hung up on, put on a busy signal, or listen to silence for the rest of the day. Many of the doctors there are second class and lack empathy as well as communication skills. It seems like no one ever works there. The people who are being paid to be there throughout the day usually show up for monetary and socialization purposes only, not so much a purpose of helping veterans. And it shows, I've waited for years to get appointments that I have needed and qualified for. Trying to switch primary care providers is a nightmare, just making a formal complaint to a live human who is empathetic is non-existent, you will be complaining to a voicemail and never receiving a call back. It's just the way the Detroit VA works, it is very very subpar. Usually the workers that work the services at this facility have a horrible attitude towards veterans. I've also had wonderful services offered to me at this facility. I've had great interactions with people. I know it's not all cut and dry. But it just seems like more often than not the Detroit VA is just completely inconsistent and incompetent. I know this is not the case with all VA hospitals. I went to an outpatient center for many years down in Austin, it was incredible. The VA in Ann Arbor, So it must just be a "Detroit problem".

My family and I had the most horrific experience at this hospital. Last July my father was wheeled into this hospital’s ER with shortness of breath and chest pain. Several lab test were done and the lab results were not good, waiting for the treatment plan to be implemented took half a day which by the end of that my father ended up on a ventilator by late evening. The staff and physicians were slow moving with addressing the possible causes of the shortness of breath, very rude and lack of urgency —We questioned if he could be transferred to another facility and that request really seemed to upset the care team. By the next morning a systemic infection was found in which turned into Septic infection by the next afternoon. By the next evening my dear father took his last breath. There were so many instances of disappointment in the way that we were treated, the lack of urgency for my father’s care and the lack of professionalism of the individuals caring for my father for those 48 hours —The horrible 48 hours spent within the walls of that hospital will forever be etched in my mind and my family’s minds forever. I’m a healthcare administrator so I completely understand that every healthcare system will have it’s good and bad —-No organization is perfect. However, the VA Hospital in Detroit, MI is the worst hospital I have ever stepped foot inside of in my life. There’s a lot of changes that need to be made in order to turn that hospital around.

Very poor service in the emergency department! Little or no communication amongst staff! Very non compassionate with no clear direction! Was there for over 8 hours and had to ask constantly for updates. If I didn’t ask no one checked on us. Seemed as if they wanted to hurry up and get you to go home without really knowing what the patient is experiencing! Physicians in the ED do not introduce themselves to you so you don’t know their names. If you walk up to the desk to inquire the staff barely wants to recognize you even when they are not busy! I’m very disappointed in the entire experience! If it was my choice I’d never come to this ED AGAIN! 😡 HORRIBLE and something needs to be done about this!

The Detroit VA Medical center offers some of the best and the worst examples of big city government services available in the US. Some of the medical services provided are the best available, yet individuals providing the services are sometimes tainted by overt anti-white racism. If you happen to be white, it is about a 50 / 50 proposition that you will get in and out of the building without encountering that racism. If you dodge the racism, it is likely you will have an excellent experience. If you must cross paths with one of the racists, you will certainly learn of their low regard for your genetic ancestry. It is a shame to witness, especially when I observe in my life experience a genuine society wide effort to eradicate prejudicial animosity based on skin color. But, this is Detroit, the most racist place in the US that I have ever been, so the VA experience appears to be an ordinary example of local cultural norms.

If you complain about the service they'll treat you worst at your next appt. They write inaccurate notes, an tell other doctors falsehoods of your health situations. They won't read your medical history, an push you along like a shopping cart. Very little patience in the care. Move right along, next patient mentally. They don't respect that we even served most times. Some people care the leadership don't hold them accountable, an don't Care about our reviews either.

Majority of the staff minus the doctor we're very unapproachable and very rude. I can't believe this is how my friend (Vietnam Vet) is treated. I myself a vet was disrespected.. This place is a shame to our war vets, they deserve much more respect along with their former vet friends.

I dread ever having to come here or interact with them. Getting the right people on the phone is a huge hassle, so good luck if you disagree with a provider's decision or need to talk to your healthcare team. You'll probably end up leaving a voicemail and never getting a call back. To make it worse, everything online is convoluted and fails to work properly most of the time. The providers do not care about us (veterans). Today, my psychiatrist immediately dismissed my mental health concerns and in the same breath called thousands of other doctors quacks. She made me feel like a pill fiend for expressing my concerns, but didn't bother to ask me any questions or perform any diagnostics. The lab is where they throw all of the rudest workers and you can expect to spend the entire day there. The sleep lab providers are nice, but I've had sleep issues for nearly 3 years and still no answer, diagnosis, or way to manage my issues after several sleep studies. Information does not get passed well. I had to cancel a dental appointment, but I was labeled as a no show which causes problems. The list could go on. Overall, the VA system may be better than it was 30 years ago but it's still a dumpster fire. "We care about veterans" No you don't, you just say that for brownie points from the public.

This place cares more for themselves than their patients. I witnessed many workers NOT doing a thing while 1 worker keeps doing their job. I cannot believe the way the Vets are treated. Have been at this hospital since 9 am and now it’s 1:00 and STILL WAITING TO BE HELPED. They send you to sooooo many different places and turn around and have you come back to where you just left and have to wait for another hour!!! I do NOT agree with the way this place treats their patients. Thank God I’m not a veteran. The government cares about the soldiers, but NOT their families or those who have already served. Shame on this place. From my understanding the VA in Ann Arbor is waaaaaay better than this place. Maybe you wait a 1/2 hour as instead of an hour. It cannot be much better than here. I feel for the veterans!!! But, the VA could care less!!!

Had an appointment to pick up a sleep device. Drove 40 mins to get there Missed half a day of work to pick it up and sat in the lobby for 2 hours just for them to tell me they don’t have it yet even though they scheduled the appointment

I'd give it negative stars but it won't let me. Worst experience ever with a medical facility. Phone system doesn't work. Their reply, "it don't? Oh." You have to fool the system or call it multiple times. When you do get ahold of someone, if you can understand them, they are the rudest people you'll ever speak with. Just seems like the place is run by amateurs or people who really don't care, about anything but sitting around counting retirement points. Heard they just "relocated" the director and some staff. What are they, the Catholic church? Talked to a guy wearing scrubs from another hospital, he sad if he wasn't required to do a rotation there he wouldn't step foot in the center.

The VA has a bad reputation but this location has been outstanding. The staff and other patients are very friendly. All of my medical needs have been addressed in an efficient and timely manner. Experiences may vary. Mine has been a good one.

I appreciate the doctors and nurses helping my brother out while he was in their care but I m giving a 1 star because of the parking lot payment.my brother pass away on the 17th of this month so I had to turn his vehicle back to the dealership. I went to pay the 10.00 fee and tried to use my wife debit card and my debit card both cards were declined and I know these cards were good.so I had a 20.00 bill put it in the machines and it didn't have change so I was out 10.00

Terrible customer service and they don't respect veterans. Whoever is in charge of hiring front desk and administrative staff should be fired. They hire the rudest, lazy incompetent people. There are some great people like the patient advocates who are very kind but the majority of the staff are terrible.

Highly inefficient provider. The reminder texts I receive tell me to go to the wrong location in the building. I showed my provider but no solution has come. And I continue to get the erroneous texts. Filling a prescription takes hours even without anyone waiting in the lobby. I assume they fill scripts being mailed, too. Every competitive organization serves the lobby customers before the deliveries... but not the VA. Idk maybe they fill it immediately and it takes 2 hours for the computer to update🤷‍♂️, same difference. They get one star because I am comparing them to the standard of customer care every other organization meets and exceeds utilizing a fraction of the resources.

Absolutely horrendous malpractice grade incompetence on every floor.. 4th pick wish-list doctors, Mexican hospitals provide better care... not just this slaughterhouse but the entire system. Got paid less than minimum wage when sent to years! of war then provided w less than that as you are DYING from the exposures from there.. this place doesn't even answer the emergency # lines.. I was treated better by fedayeen in Iraq than you clowns.. thank you for your paycheck collecting,I mean service as well.

I have been calling the substance abuse department for months and always get a voicemail. I have left so many messages and still no call back. I would hate to take off work to go there and still get the run around. This is ridiculous!!!!!!

I'm 78 years old - active & generally healthy but still 78 years old with all the concurrent aches & pains, including a few small surgeries. My experience has been that these folks are at least as competent as the private sector plus it is a virtual one-stop shop with nearly everything from primary care to high end surgery under the same roof. At first glance some of the public spaces appear a little dated and the parking garage is a little gritty, but it is very secure and I don't come here for the aesthetic experience anyway. Staff is friendly, helpful, thorough and interested in serving veterans. Finally, when I had an issue that needed outside assistance, they didn't shrink from referring me to an outside specialist (in my case, Henry Ford Health System) and the VA referral sure seemed to grease the skids for my prompt and expert care there.

I did not appreciate the phone experience that I have from one of the phone operators who was not as pleasant as she should have been. However there is a woman in pharmacy by the name of Rachel who was very pleasant and very professional and there should be more phone operators like her.

I was scheduled for a major surgery. But fell sick on the way there. I arrived went to ER to check into ER. There was no one there except 8 men sitting around chating. I asked where I CHECK in? They ignored me. Then one of then came to ck me into ER. I was in a lot of gastric pain. I was told the ER wait will be 3 hours. I couldn't wait that long so I left with my dad to Ann Arbor and where we stayed overnight and he called the ambulance to take me because he couldn't find his way around downtown Detroit in the dark. This whole thing is so unprofessional and I wouldn't send anyone to that hospital!!

I am currently hospitalized at John Dingell VA.. The doctors and nurses and specialist and staff, was professional. The treating doctor changed up . Trying to determine the cause why I am ill. The menu is good. There is TV to watch.. I had my procedures. Monday I am being rushed out of Step 2. Floor, I am freezing. My legs are swollen. My groin is swollen. Have confusing discharge orders. I had to be given blood.. If I waited 1 more day. The results would been, Bad. My nurses been great.. I am malnourished. As a Veteran I thought I would be better cared for.. I know once discharged.. I will have complications. Because of what I have experienced after being admitted and discharged without the care a veteran would expect. Yes the doctors did the procedure. However I am still ill. And need care once home. Cold, malnourished, can't care for myself. And must depend on others.. I have no transportation, clothes, appliances and food.. Due to a insect problem. Regardless as a veteran in my view. I am still ill and was put out of the hospital to soon.. I hope other veterans will not suffer in the way I am expressing.. Please note this hospital is for veterans. Not for civilians.. . My medical doctor overrode. Sending me home. Which is good. I am still ill.. I am receiving the care that I should be given.. . I am glad that my medicine doctor. Noticed not to release me. I consider myself lucky that I am receiving treatment needed after the procedures regardless that a dishcharge order was written I was not discharged. The order to discharge wasn't signed by my attending doctor.. In my case worked out for me so far.. .

I had to go to the Dermatology department the other day (my first time). Hany Deirawan, M.D. and the crew there were soooo nice, helpful and informative. From the receptionist to the doctor, they all should receive a big "atta boy" for their professionalism.

I have not had to many good experiences in this facility, I can't believe they're still wearing masks and enforcing every one to wear a mask when you walk in . Thought Biden said the pandemic was over , they need to focus on other things , like returning phone calls to patients this facility needs help all around .

They respect me and treat me as a person, not simply as another task or a body or a patient. I may be all of those to them, but I feel respected and valued as a whole person when I come to Veterans Administration medical facilities. This image shows a patient waiting area near the emergency room, in the "Fast Track" (or urgent care) examination area.

  • 4/5 T K. 2 years ago on Google
Check ahead of time if it's after 4 or 5 pm. Some entrances may be closed. Hospital personnel were friendly and helpful. There are phone charging ports in the waiting room for your convenience. Due to the Covid policy in place right now it's just a visitor, for assistance, allowed. However, no minors are to enter the building. They try to be efficient and effective here but you may want to bring something to pass a few minutes time.

Well it’s Detroit so you already know the type of customer service you’re going to get. Go in with low standards and you won’t be disappointed. Waited 4 hours just to MAKE an appointment. During that time i watched an employee sleep at his desk while his phone rings. Room C1778. Definitely recommend going to Ann Arbor.

I was so happy and relieved leaving this hospital today. I am also extremely disappointed in the amount of poor reviews. Mostly because I listened to them, and I put off coming here when I should have a LONG TIME AGO. I have been separated since 2019 and have some considerable issues due to my military service. Since then (until today) I have tried the civilian route. I have “real” insurance. I was practically passed off from clinic to clinic, told my insurance wouldn’t pay for it, the next was full, etc etc etc…. I walk in to this hospital today and I am seen nearly immediately. And not just any type of care. TRUE care. I was here for hours getting things I NEEDED and wanted. Everything I got today would have taken months, multiple appointments, multiple trips, and a LOT of money via the civilian healthcare route. Every person who helped me seemed to truly care. No question or concern seemed silly. They were absolutely so proper and thorough, and far exceeded my expectations. I felt so welcomed and comfortable in a world where that is so few and far between these days. Especially for a young female disabled veteran. This is the care everyone should have access to. Not to mention, the facility was clean, pretty, spacious, open, and safe. I can’t recommend this place to my fellow veterans enough.

My brother received terrible, negligent care at this hospital. Our family took him out of this hospital to another that promptly started treating him whereas the VA specialist consult that was ordered on admission never did show up to see my brother in the 3 days he was there. Everyone deserves better care than what he received, but especially our veterans. If you are a veteran and can use community care to go to another hospital I strongly urge you to do this. Your life may literally depend on it.

Absolutely HATE going there!!! Any service you would go to a normal doctor for this VA drags out into 3 separate visits, making you return and return. My husband just had general surgery to remove some lumps on his arm, they sewed a tendon causing pain and on second visit only took out some stitches (with the one in tendon) next week another appt. to take out other stitches, did not want to give any pain meds. THEN wound broke open 2 days after first stitches taken out!!!!! Just disgusting care and service!!!

I never get my prescriptions on time, ones that im told I can't stop taking, Dr's don't respond to request for refills from the pharmacy almost 2 weeks prior to running out and then I'm inconvenienced and have to drive down and hope they will give me enough till it's approved. Also some don't even listen to you and kind of gloss over stuff.

Miss Scott "The Administrator on Duty" so busy hung up in her title she opted to be as condescending as she could be and unnecessarily!! Talking about let her explain the privacy act no need. I am a Doctor just not caught in titles.... I asked a simple question if the surgery started since they had already been given consent to release information to me. This clown says they'll contact me when he comes back. I said I doubt that he'll be returning to the ER post-op so how can I obtain an update.... then it finally click also after having to advise her that her attitude was unnecessary she insisted that I would have to speak with her again and at that time she will do the hipaa verification. Never encountered an organization that wouldn't verify if the procedure has started
