I’ve been using this gym for a few months now. It has all the equipment you need for barbell (olympic and power) and Metcons. It's a functional space. The stationary equipment is dated but safe. The gym needs to be cleaned more often - it’s dusty and the floors need to be mopped/vacuumed. The information on the website is not accurate - the gym offers no classes at this point. There is a space to change clothes in the gym and a bathroom down the hallway.

This gym is absolutely incredible! It has all the equipment needed for powerlifting and strongman, and or bodybuilding. The atmosphere here will definitely motivate you to get stronger, and is better than your typical commercial gym. The owner is very helpful in assisting with membership and or equipment questions! I highly reccomend this to anyone just starting out with lifting, or for the avid gym-goer!

I joined Proving Grounds a little over a month ago after leaving a much more crowded chain gym and have no intentions of ever looking back. Mike and everyone at PGSK have been incredibly helpful and accommodating when called upon. The gym itself has everything you need to focus on building strength and even some stuff you didn’t know you wanted. It never feels crowded even in peak hours, and maintains a vibe of being a place people go to put in work.

If you’re in the Detroit area and looking for a gym this is the spot. Tons of equipment for anyone interested in powerlifting/olympic weightlifting, however if you’re a regular weightlifter such as myself this gym is also perfect that or any type of training really. They have all the basic equipment as well as some cool and useful pieces that I’ve never seen at other gyms. Mike is awesome and very easy to get a hold of. The other members are super nice and welcoming. Great gym atmosphere.

When I first moved to Detroit, I struggled. I would come to this gym and mostly powerlift. The people there made me feel like I was home. I even ended up going to a powerlifting meet I was invited to in another city. What an incredible experience. I will say, management at the time had some problems with their website and payments, etc. The Russell Industrial Center is iconic and wonderful. But, it is not the safest. It was very cool they had/have concerts and raves there on the weekend. Despite these critiques, I give PGSK five stars because it made me feel like I was home. Thank you, PGSK.

Atmosphere is more like a garage gym, but that's what I was looking for. I'm mainly focused on powerlifting and it has everything that I need and almost everything that I would want. Nice benches, plenty of squat racks, variety of bars, dumbbells, kettlebells, fatbells. If you're into strongman, you can find most of the equipment you would need: atlas stones, sandbags, kegs, Husafell stone, farmer's carry, axel barbell, logs... If you're into any of the strength sports, you will find what you need here. It's open 24/7 once you get a key card. Honestly, I'm usually one of only a few people there when I can fit it in. My interactions with others have been informative and positive. I've been able to record my lifts with no problems.

Very nice gym with a classic, old school gym feel. Tons of high end equipment for weightlifting, powerlifting, and strongman as well as unique equipment like fatbells, full kettlebell sets, and a huge number of Atlas stones. Highly recommend this place for serious strength athletes

Awesome, welcoming and fully stacked gym. Super comfortable spot to work on strength, mobility and stability around other focused and friendly people. Really feels like a community as you walk in to the place. 24/7 means there are plenty of hours in the day to get some alone time if that's your thing.

Excellent gym to go to when you don’t want to be in those busy public gyms. It has all the equipment you could ever need. The owners are very flexible and will not hesitate to help you out if needed.

Excellent gym especially for those competing in powerlifting, weightlifting, strongman, etc. Great experience and 24/7 keyed access is super convenient. I’m a young woman and was hesitant with the area but never had any safety issues. Machines are a little dated and could use an upgrade but still functional. 100% recommend!

Has an awesome variety of equipment for weight training and powerlifting. Also has a ton of kettlebells which hasn't been the easiest thing for me to find at gyms lately. The equipment is in great condition, you can tell that everyone who goes here cares about the place. Owners are very friendly and easy to communicate with too.

Awesome gym with everything you need, super lowkey not crowded just a great space to get a workout in. Definitely compound and serious lifter oriented, seems like they offer private training as well.

Fantastic Gym. I was visiting Michigan w my girlfriend, and just wanted to throw around some big weights, and this was perfect. Called Owner, Mike, and he said just walk on in. They have everything you need. Free weight, Kbs, sandbags, tires, and more. Will definitely come back.

This gym is a hidden gem. I was looking for a place to do some Olympic lifting while visiting Detroit and PGSK was perfect. It’s not easy to find, but Mike was accommodating, friendly and helpful. Detroit has been full of fun surprises and this gym was one of my favourite parts of my weekend in this city.

I have worked out at this gym a few times now. So far I have had an amazing experience. The gym building is smaller but luckily it never seems to be over packed with people. All of the equipment they have is great quality… seems like they have everything someone would need to get in shape plus more

When visiting Detroit for a few months this summer, Proving Grounds was my lifeline. This is everything you want in a gym and nothing you don't; PGSK is fairly priced, no nonsense, has keycard access and amazing equipment, and is never packed. If you find yourself in Detroit and need to pray to the iron gods, this is the gym for you. Call Mike and make it happen!

If you’re in Detroit and are looking for a serious place to lift with solid equipment for all variations of lifting style, this is your spot. Not to mention everyone here is friendly and respectful! Old school, all American training mentality here

A1 gym for all types of fitness goals. I like this place since it is gritty and has some hard to find equipment equipment, most gyms don't have strongman equipment or specialized bars.

This gym has everything you’ll need and more than you might know to do with. It’s exceptionally organized and very well kept. Great place to get your work out if you’re strength training.

This place has everything you need and more. The onwer is very kind and trusting and the customers have great gym etiquette. Best part: it's 24/7!

  • 5/5 Zachary L. 1 year ago on Google • 2 reviews
Great strongman/strength and conditioning gym for only $50 per month. Open 24 hours by keycard, which is clutch. No treadmills or ellipticals in here but plenty of room to walk or jog in the hallway of the russell. Very industrial vibe, obviously. Wide array of strongman equipment like farmers handles, axel bars, yoke, sleds, atlas stones, circus dumbbells, etc. Also olympic bars and plates and powerlifting plates with heavy benches. This place is not crowded. If you’re a novice lifter you might need someone to guide you. If you know what you’re doing already and need a place to train anytime, this place is pretty dope.

Mike was kind enough to let us try out his gym while we're in town for the weekend. It was awesome! Tons of equipment and space to do whatever type of workout you prefer. The gym is low key and the members seem chill. Will definitely be coming back next time we're in town!
