DO NOT. Watch a movie here! Just saw Oppenheimer here and was terribly disappointed. They advertise this as an IMAX theater. It is a planetarium where the rectangular movie gets warped the entire time. It really takes away from the experience. You would also think that a place that is made to look up, they’d make comfortable or even accommodating seats for such occasion. Nope. The back of the seat is short so your head is hanging over and your neck is straining. Or the alternative, you scoot forward to get your head onto the headrest, and your knees are into the back of the seat in front of you for 3 hours. There are also no good seats in the planetarium whatsoever. The whole middle portion is gutted out for the projector room, so because of the size of the dome, to see something on the other side of the screen, you have to completely turn your head 90 degrees. This is absolutely not the way the director, Christopher Nolan intended for the movie to be watched. All the cinematography was ruined by the dome. (Buildings warped and curvy) No refunds, and everyone in the theater seemed just as disappointed and led astray. I’m going to watch the movie in a normal theater now because it was a great movie, just tainted by the planetarium.

I don't usually leave reviews, but I have to say that the viewing of Oppenheimer was easily the worst movie experience I ever had. The theater is not made for full length films, much less a 3 hour film in 70mm. I did not know this, like many other people, as shown by all the negative reviews currently. Every aspect of the experience was terrible. The theater itself is cramped, you are on top of the people next to you, behind you, and in front of you. The movie itself was projected in a terrible position on the dome ceiling where I had to lean back for the entire 3 hours. Additionally, the seats do not support this position, they are not tall enough nor recline much, if at all. The person in front of me had to reposition themselves all through the film, most likely due to fatigue from angling their head up in an unnatural/unsupported position, and each time they re-positioned, their chair bashed into my knees. It was not their fault, the fault is on the theater thinking they had the infrastructure for a such a film. The quality of the projected movie was as if I bought a cheap projector and projected it on my wall at home, except worse because the projected picture in the theater was stretched across the dome in a way that distorted every scene. The viewing experience was literally painful and low quality. I feel the theater disregarded all these shortcomings and knew that the theater could not handle the movie, and decided to use it as a cash grab since Oppenheimer is an extremely popular movie. Many people have been misled and taken advantage of, just read the rest of the reviews if you do not believe me. I'm not even an avid movie goer and I feel ripped off. Even more so, no refunds or seat selection - first come, first served. Insane.

Went to see Oppenheimer. Left after 5 minutes. I’m super disappointed- I was so excited to see this in 70mm. If you haven’t been to this IMAX theatre, it’s literally a dome. So the film, which is intended to be projected on a flat screen, is projected onto a curved dome. The only way you can get a decent viewing of the film is to watch it in digital IMAX at your local movie theatre or another theatre that’s showing 70mm. If you plan on sitting through 3 hours of Oppenheimer, plan on having a sore neck for the week because you literally have to constantly look in every direction to watch the movie

My experience at the Michigan Science Center's IMAX viewing of "Oppenheimer" was nothing short of a disappointment. With the promise of an incredible 70MM IMAX version of the movie, I walked in with high expectations, only to be met with a series of unfortunate letdowns that left me questioning their commitment to quality. First and foremost, the seats were a nightmare. Uncomfortable doesn't even begin to describe the level of discomfort these torture devices provided. It's astonishing that in an age where comfort is a basic expectation, the Science Center managed to offer seats seemingly designed to induce physical agony. But the real travesty was the screen itself. The supposed IMAX experience turned out to be an exercise in visual frustration. The screen's curvature distorted the image to the point where characters appeared as if they were melting into each other. It was as if the Science Center took it upon themselves to present a surrealistic reinterpretation of the film, where faces contorted and landscapes twisted in ways the director never intended. Within a mere five minutes, it became clear that enduring this cinematic catastrophe would be an exercise in futility. I left the viewing, feeling as if I had just survived an unfortunate experiment in sensory deprivation and discomfort. The anticipation of a grand cinematic experience was replaced with a bitter taste of regret for having wasted my time and money on such a debacle. The Michigan Science Center's handling of the IMAX screening of "Oppenheimer" was a true disservice to both the film and the audience. The lack of attention to detail, the uncomfortable seating, and the distorted visuals turned what should have been a remarkable movie night into a cautionary tale of how not to curate a cinematic experience. Save yourself the agony and disappointment – steer clear of this debacle masquerading as entertainment.

terrible experience watching a 3hr long feature film. Not sure whose idea it was to promote viewing Oppenheimer in this incredibly warped format, but with tickets sold out here, it is a waste of 14 dollars for a ruined experience. The seating is tight, understandably to have more of a collective experience if the theater dome is used as it is intended, to look at stars, science or nature pictures —and where whichever seat you sit at will not make a difference based on the science-like content being shown. Terrible idea to show Oppenheimer in this way, I am sure that a majority of people like myself had a terrible, vertigo-inducing viewing experience, save for those who got inside of the theater earlier to score seats in the center of the dome. And for them to say they don’t do refunds. Running with the money and not at all considering the buyer’s experience, very telling. They were truly better off not showing this film here.

BEWARE: the film is grainy and not high definition. Worse than regular theater. Second, I got sick 10 minutes into Oppenheimer and had to leave. Don't know if it was the distorted picture, or having to rock my head from side to side real quick just to see the entire picture. I will never go back to see a movie at this theater. Will make sure to warn others. Terrible experience, waste of time and money. It sounded like a cool concept and waited 3 weeks to not see this movie and now I can't see it in IMAX anywhere else. Drove 2 hours just to come here. Thanks.

Had the perfect experience seeing Oppenheimer here. It was nice treating this like movies back in the day. First come, first serve; got great seats, was blown away by the the imax ratio scenes.

The movie itself was great. The theater and the seating are in poor shape. Some Seat head rests are covered in duck tape. It seems like they don't maintain their venue very well.

Going to the Dome Theatre at the Detroit Science Center is an absolutely magickal experience. I have such incredibly fond memories of coming here from when I was a kid! I remember seeing a film about volcanoes, another film about the Amazon rainforest, and another film about space. I was so sad they had to close down because of water damage, but I am absolutely thrilled they are open again! Though, I wish they offered a better selection of films to see. There's great ones at the other theatres there but the only ones I've seen available at the dome theatre are a bit lame if I'm being honest. I really want to take my kids to the dome theatre, I know they would absolutely love it just as much as I did as a kid (and still do as an adult!), but I'll just wait until there is something better showing.

I was worried after seeing some of the negative reviews, but I still enjoyed seeing Oppenheimer here. I think most of the complaints were overblown, but I did know the theater was a dome beforehand and can see how that would be disappointing to those who didn't. The staff was friendly and everyone who got there early was offered a tour of the projector room. The dome screen was definitely different but immersive and not distracting, and I got used to it after the first 20 minutes or so. The only thing keeping me from giving it a 5 star rating is that the seats can be cramping if you are tall, but it was manageable. Overall, I'm glad that I saw the film here, even if it might have been better on the "normal" 70mm screen in Grand Rapids.

Place was pitiful. Nothing worked. I paid 30.00 for nothing. Grandkids didn't like it. Want a refund.
