I was diagnosed with breast cancer here in April. It took 5 months to even get the imaging appointment--while the tumors progressed. I applied for financial assistance and they told me 'the board is reviewing' and 'it's on the president's desk' for over a month and cancelled necessary appointments and made me pay upfront out of pocket for tests. I went from a grade 2 to a grade 3 while they strung me along. This place being 'you're best chance' is such a joke, especially if you are low income. The almighty dollar is far more important than your life here. Go anywhere else: Henry Ford, Providence, even better U of M. Compared to U of M, Karmanos is a sad disorganized rinky dink operation. Run from Karmanos and for profit hospitals in general. You deserve better and even if you have money, don't give it to a place that totally lacks compassion for those who do not.

Horrible experiences at this hospital. Nurses are cold, administration is rude and money hungry. Very heartless the way they deal with people. I went to Providence Ascension Cancer Center and was treated with much more dignity, kindness, and respect.

My mom’s experience with Karmanos was decent in the beginning but nothing but painful in the end. My mom was treated her from 2018 until October 2022 shortly before she passed in November 2022. For the most part her treatment went well and Dr. Morris was very kind although clearly very busy and unable to give much time. She routinely got infusions here and participated in a clinical trial when her previous treatments stopped working. She was always on time, although the staff was never even close to being on time. During the month of October 2022 my mom stayed in the Karmanos 5th floor inpatient wing for about a month. She had come in for chemo but was admitted due to severe dehydration and vomiting. I would arrive around 5 pm daily after getting off of work and unfortunately the doctor was never around when I came to visit her. This is understandable, but also, the nurses at the nurse station of this wing were able to give me next to no information about her current status at any given time. Shouldn’t they be able to look up notes from a doctor to keep family informed? I felt very much in the dark and the one time I tried to push for more info I was told to try calling the nurses station number during the day. I did so on my lunch one day and was just told the doctor was not available. During the last week of my mom’s life she was forced to stay at a local hospital (garden city) because the ambulance would only take her to the closest location. I tried calling Karmanos in an attempt to contact her doctor(s) about missing her next appointment, as well as attempting to gain any helpful information from Karmanos in order to coordinate a better medical experience for her at the hospital. After all, her medical team for 4 years should know a lot more than just a random hospital. I was unable to get a hold of anyone except the scheduling office and after leaving a message with the doctor’s office line there asking for help for my mom, I never got a call back. I also never received any follow up contact from Karmanos after the cancelled appointment- not through through mail, my mom’s number, or any other form of contact. Did they truly just not care if she never received treatment again? Where was the communication? After 4 years of coordinating my mom’s cancer treatment, I thought that my family might be shown a little more humanity from Karmanos. I got more compassion and contact from the garden city hospital workers who had never met her before and the hospice care workers that we only knew for one day. I understand it’s a big company but it felt soulless to never even get a call back. The nurses and doctors were kind here too but my mom often felt lost in the shuffle of miscommunication between departments. The management of this hospital needs to make some serious change and start treating their patients like humans.

This is possibly the worst facility I’ve ever had the experience of visiting. The staff couldn’t have been more rude. Healthcare and service are not a priority here. Simple requests for the health and safety of the patient are disregarded by the staff. Whoever trained the administrative personnel should be removed. Their behavior and customer service is abhorrent. I will never recommend this place to anyone. While I have great respect for those working in the healthcare system, Karmanos is not a place you should go for quality treatment or care.

Unfortunately we had a negative experience at Karmanos and would not go back. The process was extremely lengthy, the team was unprepared and didn't provide useful guidance, and in the end we had to pay the bill for a service that added more harm than good. We are from Windsor and went to Karmanos to receive a second opinion after being told in Windsor there were no treatment options available for my husband, besides 1 which was not yet available in Canada. Upon Karmanos' request, I paid for all of my husband's medical records and took a day off work to drive to Detroit and deliver them. When we arrived for our appointment a few weeks later, the Doctor and his team seemed like they hadn't consulted any of the material. First of all, my daughter and I took the day off work to both attend the appointment (as my daughter is more familiar with his cancer and treatments). Upon arriving they said only one person could accompany my husband and we had not been told of this previously. I was not even allowed to wait in the Lobby, and had to sit in my car in the heat. They told us they could call me from the Doctor's office. When my husband and daughter went in, first they were taken in by a nurse. My husband is very weak, in a lot of pain, and it is hard and painful for him to stand. The nurse was very impatient and continued insisting that he stand straight so she could get his height (which my daughter told her and should have been in his charts) as well as his weight, which we also already had checked. They then waited a long time to be seen by the doctor, while my husband has little energy and had already been through a long trip to come to Detroit. Even though they said they could call, it turns out they didn't have a phone and could not, in fact, call. They told my daughter she could call from her phone, which was dying and also charged international fees as our phone plans are Canadian. When the physician's assistant and doctor finally arrived, my daughter extensively explained my husband's disease and treatments to a nurse, the physician's assistant, and the physician. This was all in his paperwork I had delivered. Upon finishing, the doctor provided little to no insight or guidance. My daughter asked about this last possible treatment that was available and all the doctor said is along the lines of "yeah you could do that, but you would have to pay for it and it's expensive". There wasn't explanation of the situation, the pros/cons. Overall it felt like a strain on my husband to go and sit through this, and we didn't gain any understanding. It seemed like my daughter provided the answers instead of the doctor. To put this in perspective, the following week we were able to see an Oncologist in London, Ontario. In this case, the Doctor and her team knew all about my husband's medical history, and took a lot of time to sit with us and explain the options, as well as assure us that my husband's treatment plan had been the best for him. We left feeling settled, and didn't have a bill to pay in the end. If you are from Windsor and thinking of going to Karmanos, maybe you will have better luck than us because we had heard positive things, but unfortunately given our experience I would say it is not worth the money. The only positive experience was the kind and understanding man who helped my daughter check in at the entrance, who we believe was named Reginald.

My family is disappointed with the Karmanos Cancer Institute after meeting with their physicians for a second opinion on treatment for my mother's oral cancer. We had been hopeful about Karmanos due to their national reputation and their website's claims of advanced and innovative treatment options such as immunotherapy and CAR T-cell therapy. It is now our impression that these claims are incorrect and that Karmanos provides the same status quo "standard of care" (chemo and radiation) that is offered by any average hospital system. When I called to schedule the appointment, I was told that online consults were not possible, even though the website advertises them. The secretary e-mailed a 26-page health history questionnaire to complete before the appointment, assuring us that a team of specialists would review the records prior to meeting with us. I spent a day filling out the packet, obtaining medical records from my mom's other physicians, writing an extensive list of her health history, and ensuring it got to Karmanos several weeks before our appointment. On the day of the appointment (in November 2022) we drove two hours to the facility, which we were willing to do for quality care. All people entering the hospital were required to apply hand sanitizer, even though COVID is not transmitted by touch. We were then told that only one person could accompany my mother into the building due to COVID, so I sat in the parking lot and observed a SWAT team come rushing out of a nearby parking garage with rifles. The facility did not have phones in the offices, but fortunately my dad was able to use his cell phone as a speakerphone from within the building so that I could participate in the consult. My mom met with two physicians, neither of whom had looked at the medical records that I had previously sent. One of them even began reading her health history out loud to me over the phone as though it was new information to me, even though I am the one who prepared and typed it for his benefit. In the end, they said the "standard of care" is chemo and radiation, just like everywhere else, and that they do not offer any updated treatments. Additionally, they wanted us to make the two-hour drive again the next day to have new CT scans performed at their facility, and were unwilling to work with any other hospital system for the testing. We were told that only if the basic treatment failed would they consider enrolling my mom in a clinical trial for advanced treatments, and there was no guarantee whether she'd receive the treatment or the placebo. We ended up declining Karmanos and using the regular hospital system closer to home. Overall our impression is that Karmanos has an exaggerated reputation, and that they do not offer innovative options. We are primarily disappointed that the physicians did not review any of my mother's records prior to our visit in order to understand her case, and we are disappointed that a nationally-known cancer center is not utilizing updated treatments. My main positive comments about Karmanos are that the front-desk attendant was friendly and the physicians arrived to the appointments on time.

Very kind and helpful staff. You walk in and feel very supported. I ended up not having cancer, praise God, but was beautifully supported through the surgery and figuring it all out process. I am so glad when my biopsy came back suspicious I came to Karmanos!

If you or loved one diagnosed with cancer DON’T go to this place to waste your time.Doctors takes more than six months for Aggressive cancer just do different testing and after that they still not able to schedule your appointment to start treatment. The first visit doctor/ radiologist will give treat you nice but after that every visit they will start treat you like a customer not a patient. Doctors/ Radiologists are not professionals. We decide to go somewhere.scheduling appointments are hectic. You need at least 5 hours to make one appointment.

My entire experience from the Valet to surgeon Dr. Kim has been outstanding. Everyone has been very nice, caring and reassuring. I truly feel that I am receiving the best possible care and experience during this journey. Thank you to all at Karmanos Cancer Institute on John R in Detroit.

I work at this place as a researcher. DO NOT COME HERE. Don't come here to work. Don't come here for your health. Just don't. They lied *heavily* about the pay that I would take home. Not only did they offer NO indication that OVER 20% of my pay would be taken in taxes (I budgeted for less); the center at Wayne State will only pay you for 20 of the days you work each month and roll the other days over to the next month's pay. This means that if you earn $5400 in a month like I do--you'll only get $4800 a month. They think this is okay because they'll pay you "eventually" and it isn't. I would have to quit and stop earning money from them for them to ever catch up with me and pay me in full. If I die at my desk--I'll never be paid in full--ever. DO NOT COME HERE. Not for work, not for health, not for anything. All these people do is lie.

I am currently considering canceling esophageal/ hiatel hernia surgery which was sheduled for tomorrow but was rescheduled for Friday. Never was I notified until I called the clinic to see if there was info I needed to have for tomorrow. A totall mess when it comes to scheduling surgery it seems. The responsible person for notifying me never did but claimed to have called and even claimed to have left a voice mail, which never happened ( she did have my correct phone number). She even went as far as to say she had ordered the assistant to call me too , which also was not true. Hospital and both assistant and responsible party all had different rescheduling times ( 10AM, 11.45AM and 1PM). Totally lost confidence in this place. Surgeon called to convince me to keep the rescheduled appointment, but heck... who will know how late that will be? Have contacted different surgeon ( Henry Ford) but will decide tomorrow. Would I really want to be treated and recovering in this place ? Ps: after some phone calls and discussions with surgeon decided to go ahead with procedure. Staff claims they had wrong phone number. Fingers crossed

Karmanos had a vendor display at Comerica Park on September 28,2024 to have people sign up for “free screenings”, they were giving away free merchandise ( bags, pens etc) I asked what I had to do to get a bag. The woman told me I had to sign up for cancer screening, I explained I had cancer ( terminal). She said, “ well then you must be caught up on your screenings”. I said, I am. She said, “ you don’t qualify”! Really? I think I more than qualify, seriously? A bag? Well Kamanos, I could have spread the word about. How important screenings are carrying your bag… but I didn’t qualify! Way to go Karmanos, way to make a terminally ill patient feel good. A bag? SMH!! This is laughable and by the way your employee at Comerica Park was the most unprofessional person I have ever seen. No empathy, no compassion and certainly not a person who should be promoting cancer awareness! Your hospital is the hospital is the LAST hospital in the world I would recommend, thank you for showing the real story behind your hospital! Give that employee a raise she saved your hospital 50 cents ( cost of a bag). I added a photo of the ladies on your website. She proudly told me her name was Tamika. Give that girl a raise! 😔

Cancer care is excellent.Their dis-organization for follow-up vists is tediouse. I have to commit 2.5 to four hours for followup visits to spend 5 minutes to see my doctor. I have been going through this routine for two years now. It was worse before, as during the early visits for a year, I would have to commit this time three times a week while not feeling well and subject my wife to just sitting there. This is ontop of having to drive one hour each way to the appointment. Their patient service portal sucks. Tried to register 3 times and keep getting 505 errors. Contacted web support 4 days ago and I'm still waiting. I thought the acquisition from McLaren would help their woeful patent records system. But I guess that's not happening. I remember they tracked blood counts on a sheet of paper maginetically attached on the door. I think it's time McLaren move to Epic. Assention and Trinity Health learned their lesson the hard way a few years back. I spent the latter portion of my career fixing monstrosities like these in the automotive, telecommunications and military and it looks like McLaren has a major challenge incorporating the antiquated Karmanos system into something usefull. Additionally the billing system sucks you can't pay your bill on line as they generate individual visits under different patient numbers each time. I have to physically call each time to pay segmented bills. I find this ironic as Karmanos was funded by a IT CEO.

I want to start by saying, Dr Michael Simon gets a top notch 5 star rating from me. He is the most attentive and compassionate oncologist and has consistently advocated and helped me along the way through this cancer journey. Karmanos Detroit has a lot of work to do. They are obviously in need of more hands - which to an extent is the nature of our post Covid world however, karmanos as an institute should have focused on replenishing their staff to ensure top notch care for those who need it most. The surgeons and PA’s that I met are respectable humans - but their compassion and care lacks greatly. I was referred to as a “difficult patient” when asking for help and guidance from my breast surgeon. I am now being seen at Karmanos in Farmington and it has been a night and day difference. Every single human being we have met at the Farmington location has been incredible. Patient resources and support is readily available and the facility is much cleaner. It is my hope that the extensive feedback I have left to patient experience at Karmanos is not taken lightly. I wish that no patient, especially one with cancer, ever has to feel like they are difficult, needy or too much for their medical team.

I value the staff and my doctor. I do feel that areas outside of the medical needs could use a "sprucing up". Waiting rooms are dark and uninviting. Soothing music played in the waiting rooms would be an improvement from the TV that no one is really watching.

I have stage 4 breast cancer. I can never get a hold of my doctor..... Ever. I call and leave messages nobody calls back. They make appointments for me and I don't know about most. I have to beg to see the cardiologist and for my scans, then haven't done blood work for months and with me being stage 4 I've always gotten scans every three months and blood work monthly. I will be switching from here because I'm sure any other place would be more professional than here. My life is in the doctors hands and she or her nurse can't even return my calls or treat me like a decent human being.

I had a great experience. Dr Samantray is an excellent doctor and really cares for her patients and it shows. Her nurse Susan was very helpful on getting everything set up for the appointment and labs. The acute care associates where also very friendly and nice as well.

The best nurses are at Karmanos I just left a six day stay in room 5203 at the Karmanos Cancer hospital in downtown Detroit. The people working there were amazing! I would like to thank the nurses Cam, Carie, Jen, Amber, Lenni & Maryam You guys were great! And there were two incredible phlebotomist. One in particular was a true artist. He could get blood samples without me feeling anything. And I let him know verbally at the time. How much I appreciated his true skill. The Housekeeping people were nearly invisible. But kept the rooms & Hallway looking perfect, thanks

Oh my goodness I cannot say anything bad about this place. From prestart to finish! Everything was amazing! Everyone here are so nice, caring, welcoming, professional, and amazing! I’ve never seen a medical team and system so well put together. So let’s start with Sophia! She is so sweet! She helped me get my appointment together on the phone and was very very patient whom I appreciate a lot! She went through everything with me. As I arrive today a nice man helped me get my file together and had me fill out forms. He was so nice I’m sorry I didn’t get his name but he was so welcoming! Ugh this place is so amazing! I highly recommend!! Dr. Viviano was so welcoming and comforting! Everyone here is so patient and seems to actually care. I wish all doctors office and hospitals were like this! Thank you thank you thank you so much!! I hope you all continue to be happy helping others, and get along with one another. ❤️ Also my ultrasound came out all good! So that’s another bright side! Also they do validate parking for you if you need! :)

I have nothing but good things to say about Karmanos. I was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer 3 months ago. They have been supportive, knowledgeable and very informed on the best treatments available. They are one of only 53 Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the entire country. I wouldn't go anywhere else!

  • 5/5 Leah C. 1 year ago on Google
I visited the hospital last week and had a great experience considering the circumstances. I suffer from anxiety and the staff made me feel very comfortable and welcomed. The mammogram and ultrasound techs were super friendly which helped defuse the anxiousness that I was feeling upon arrival. The radiologist actually came in to my room after to explain everything and created a solid game plan for me moving forward. Even if you do not currently have or treating cancer but are at a higher risk of getting it, you can still go to Karmanos for all of your screening needs. THANK. YOU Karmanos staff for giving me and others the best service and care!

Great doctors but not sure who's running the place. Billing was all messed up even calling monthly trying to get it straightened out and billed to insurance. They kept putting in Medicaid which we didn't have. Then they said it was billed and denied even though the insurance never recorded it. We would cancel appointments via reminder call and appointment call desk and they still called us saying we missed the appointment. When my husband had surgery, he was left by himself for over 2 hours because everyone from the morning went home. Then they wheeled him out as he was throwing up. They need a huge management over haul.

As a Beaumont retired registered nurse, I give the best kudos to the nurses. The department is clean, the head nurse is well spoken of. They run their cancer infusion clinic like clockwork, they are always polite, courteous, compassionate and coming every three weeks is not a chore but a blessing

Karmanos cancer Institute could not have been any better in the treatment of my wife. Through the whole process they showed professionalism and concern for her well being. Every associate we encountered gave us the courtesy and respect needed in such a time as this. I would highly recommend Karmanos cancer Institute of Detroit for your cancer treatment. I would like to thank doctor Deol and PA Vito for their commitment, concern and compassion given while we progressed through my wife's treatment. God bless you all John

I have been treated at Karmanos Cancer Institute for about 8 years. I have always been impressed with the professionalism of the doctors, nurses, aides and techs I have encountered. My treatment has been adjusted as necessary to keep my cancer under control while maintaining the best possible quality of life. I would recommend Karmanos to anyone who has cancer.

My mom has stage 4 breast cancer that has spread to her bones. We had some concerns with how things were going for her at St. Mary's so we were considering switching to Karmanos. At minimum, we needed a 2nd opinion... (Due to space restrictions, I have attached pictures of my full review, as I think anyone considering Karmanos should have a solid grasp on what to expect. It was not a good experience and I would never recommend that anyone come here.)

I love Dr.Deol, Dr.Yang, Vito, Hailey, Tien, Anne, V, Stacey and all other doctors, nurses and staff I have worked with in the Dresner Clinic in Karmanos Cancer Institute as they’ve become more like family. I also can’t forget all the staff on floor 10WN while going through my bone marrow transplant, the hardest thing I have ever done while being away from my newborn baby. Dr.Ayash, Andrea, Kayla, Jenna, Amanda, Lauren, Victoria, Mildred and all other staff. All of my chemo and transfusion nurses. They all saved my life and gave me a second chance with my son and fiancé after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia with aggressive mutations and being referred here by my previous family oncologist. I can’t thank them enough and will always recommend.
