My first time eating African food and I loved everything I had. More so the waitress was awesome helping me and my friend who flew in from FL because he seen a video about them go viral. The hidden gem is the juice they make. The berry mint and ginger juice were easily my favorite. The chicken had so much flavor and was juicy. The portion sizes were very large and even being full I wanted to keep eating because it tasted so good. Loved the fried plantains & both appetizers. A hole in the wall place that packs some serious flavor! Great place! ********UPDATE******************* Went back with some friends from FL and service was even better if I could give 10stars I would. The owner was there as well so we got a picture and even tried a new juice they make.

The food was so yummy. It had a little bit of spice but it was amazing. Reminded me of trips I would take to Dearborn and eat at different western African places! We ate so good! I look forward to coming back!

My friend recommended this place and I also saw a review from an Instagram foodie that I follow. I ordered grilled red snapper and husband grilled half chicken. We are not disappointed!! They were great! The chicken was well seasoned and flavourful. Moist inside and charred outside. The fish also very flavorful. It was grilled to perfection. It comes with sides, and since the both of us craved plantain, we order them with our meal. Overall, you need to try them if you're in Detroit.

Dine in available. Lunchroom style booths with 3 (2) seater tables next to each other along 1 wall. Wallpaper covering the tables. We were shown a serving of the lunch special & my Mom changed from the lamb skewers to that, but I maintained my original order. Took a noticeable amount of time for the food to be cooked BUT it was brought out on platters that left more than enough to be taken home. Food is DELICIOUS

The Cons: The parking sucks. The review: We went to Matys on a Sunday afternoon. There was no wait, and the owner came to our table to take our order. Our food took about 15 minutes to come and it smelled heavenly. We had the Egg rolls, Chicken Yassa & Red Snapper. The food was so flavorful and piping hot and fresh. The meala come with a side (we both had Jollof), and a side of sauteed onions in a zesty, delicious sauce. They give you a FREE bottle of water upon seating, which is nice because this food packs a little heat (spice) to it. Friendly atmosphere, good food. I hugged our waitress! I definitely recommend it.

The red snapper is tangy and spicy. It’s a must try.The jollof rice is good too. When we visited they were out of lamb yassa , so we had to order chicken and I personally wouldn’t recommend it. Everything here is halal

Authentic African Senegalese food in the heart of Detroit. Their FISH (red snapper) is to DIE FOR, literally some of the best fish I have had in the world bc of the spices they use. The onion sauce that comes with side of entree is also phenomenal and will make any food taste amazing. Plus it’s all halal!

This authentic African food was awesome, flavorful and with some savory heat in the the rice and and. Chicken. I loved the snapper just not enough of it:). The service was great! While I waited for my order it seemed they had a loyal customer base who were all treated respectfully. The atmosphere needed an update asap. Overall, I plan on going back when I am in the area. Good enough to make an excuse to be in the area.

The food was DELICIOUS!!! I went here to accompany some friends who wanted to try something different and see what the rave was about. The rave is justified! We had the red snapper and it was sooooo flavourful along with the side items. I encourage anyone to give it a try. You will not be disappointed 😁

I tried this place for the first time a few weeks ago and ordered names, whole red snapper and deebee. Everything was seasoned really well and tasted delicious. The deebee was a little tough for me, but that's okay. I'll get something else next time I come. I wish this place wasn't so far. I'll be back!

The food was good, the lamb shank, red snapper was very good! The atmosphere was so so. There was a smell from bathroom or sewer line that wasn't good. I would go again.
