A pleasure exploring this historical church after dark 😍 It was originally established as "The Mission of Our Lady of the Assumption among the Hurons in Detroit" in 1728 by the Jesuit missionary Fr. Armand De La Richardie, S.J. In 1765, a 60 by 30 feet (18 m × 9 m) church was erected for the Hurons and some sixty French settler families. Assumption became an official, canonical institution in 1767 under its first pastor, Fr. Pierre Potier S.J. who remained at his post until his death in 1781. That year, the bishop of Quebec sent his Vicar-General, Fr. Francois-Xavier Hubert to be pastor of Assumption parish. Fr. Hubert initiated plans to build a rectory and a school. A shortage of land for this project was rectified by a donation of land from the Hurons on March 6, 1782. The rectory was built in 1785 and in 1786 as coadjutor to the bishop of Quebec, Fr. Hubert, who had since relocated for his new post, contributed to the building of a new church and sent two women from Quebec to establish a school.

Beautiful church with lot of history in Windsor. The feel inside the church was great... The mass was good but since they had renovation going on, the speakers were not working all that well... They had an active volunteer group and good amount of parking spots too...

The main church is closed pending renovations, and is now served out of the the old Holy Name of Mary Church building just south of Wyandotte W. at McEwan. But the Rosary Chapel adjacent to Assumption Church remains open for daily mass, confessions, Eucharist adoration, intimate celebrations, and quiet reflection and prayer. It remains connected to the Basilian fathers, who have served the Windsor area as pastors and educators for over one hundred and fifty years. The Rosary Chapel also now serves the University of Windsor campus at the same general location. It is a great, historic Roman Catholic parish, the oldest in Canada West of Montreal. Note Ste Anne's Church across the Detroit River in Detroit, which was founded as a parish by Cadillac in 1701.

I am not Catholic, I visited just to see the building and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the rosery chapel. Both are positively majestic works of architecture. It is one of the most worthy builds I can think of to be restored - everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy its astounding beauty.

Have always loved this church and the people in it. Very glad they are doing restorations to save the church and keep it around for another 200 yrs.

Five bucks to park but my car is always safe there. The tendency of the clerk's to hand back change instead of bills is rampant.

Does this church have the traditional Latin mass ? I need to find a church in Windsor with the Latin mass, the modernism in Catholicism these days is ruining people I'm sorry to say that on a church post. Anyways, I came across seeing something about Latin masses and as all churches are beautiful in there own way I am truly seeking to go to Latin masses from now on if any churches in Windsor offer that I'd love to know. Beautiful church with a rich history btw.

A gorgeous vintage church and the oldest still operating in Canada (west of Montreal). Currently under restoration.

It is the most people visited Church in Windsor. It is near to the University Of Windsor. The Church is so beautiful. It is a peaceful place to pray. Mass schedules of family parishes, 3 Churches, are provided in the official website of the Church. There is a Holy Mass intended for students at 7 30pm on Sundays.
