Surgery
Institute
is
the
first
full-fledged
medical
institution
in
Bangladesh
to
treat
burn
patients.
The
world's
largest
burn
institute
has
three
blocks
including
burn
unit,
plastic
surgery
unit
and
academic
wing.
History:
In
Bangladesh
in
1986,
the
country's
first
plastic
surgeon
Professor
Dr.
Burn
unit
was
started
in
Dhaka
Medical
College
Hospital
on
the
initiative
of
Mohammad
Shahidullah.
It
had
only
six
beds
then.
Later,
Professor
Dr.
With
the
efforts
of
Samant
Lal,
in
2003
Dhaka
Medical
College
started
functioning
as
a
full-fledged
unit
with
50
beds
in
a
separate
6-storey
building
on
the
premises
of
the
hospital5]
The
importance
of
the
burn
unit
was
reinforced
after
the
death
of
127
people
in
the
Nimtoli
fire
in
old
Dhaka
on
3
June
2010
and
subsequent
election
violence
and
fire
accidents
in
various
factories
across
the
country.
In
2013,
Dhaka
Medical
College
Hospital's
burn
unit
was
increased
to
300
beds
and
the
initiative
of
National
Burn
and
Plastic
Surgery
Institute
was
taken.[5]
In
continuation
of
this,
it
is
planned
to
build
this
institute
of
500
beds
on
that
land
by
connecting
the
TB
Hospital
of
Chankharpool
with
the
Mahakhali
Chest
Hospital6]
In
an
international
conference
on
plastic
surgery
organized
in
Dhaka
on
February
27,
2015,
the
then
prime
minister
of
Bangladesh,
Sheikh
Hasina,
announced
the
establishment
of
an
international
standard
burn
and
plastic
surgery
institute,
which
was
approved
in
November
2015
at
ECNEC
meeting.
On
April
6,
2016,
the
foundation
stone
of
the
Sheikh
Hasina
National
Institute
of
Burn
and
Plastic
Surgery
was
laid
at
Chankharpool,
Dhaka,
and
on
April
27
of
the
same
year,
the
construction
of
the
Bangladesh
Army
Engineering
Core
began7][8]
Honorable
Prime
Minister
Sheikh
Hasina
inaugurated
it
on
24th
October
2018
and
the
full
medical
service
was
officially
launched
from
4th
July
2019.
Professor
Dr.
Abul
Kalam
is
working
as
the
founder
director
of
this
institution.
It
has
a
500-bed,
22-bed
Intensive
Care
Unit
(ICU),
22-bed
High
Deficiency
Unit
(HDU),
12
operation
theaters
and
a
state-of-the-art
post-operative
ward
to
ensure
better
patient
care.
Apart
from
treatment
of
burn
patients,
plastic
and
reconstructive
surgery
is
also
available
for
various
patients
including
congenital
cleft
lip
and
palate.
There
is
a
helipad
on
the
roof
of
the
building
to
quickly
bring
patients
to
the
facility.
The
hospital
parking
lot
has
180
parking
spaces.
Bangladesh
Army
is
managing
the
construction
of
this
12-storey
institute
built
on
1.76
acres
of
land
in
Chankharpool
of
the
capital.
The
construction
cost
has
been
912
crore
rupees.

Professor
Dr.
Abul
Kalam
He
was
later
appointed
as
the
first
director
of
the
institute.[13]
Dr.
Samanta
Lal
Sen
is
the
Chief
Coordinator
of
the
Institute.[9]
