Thalner
fort
was
built
on
the
banks
of
river
Tapi.
This
fort
which
has
been
a
witness
to
many
glorious
reigns,
currently
stands
in
a
sorry
condition
due
to
inattentiveness
by
the
locals
and
government
authorities.
Thalner
was
once
the
capital
center
for
Khandesh
region
which
was
an
important
part
route
on
the
Surat-Burhanpur
trade
route.
The
famous
singer
of
India
Ms.
Lata
Mangeshkar
had
her
grandparents
from
Thalner.
During
1128
A.D
the
control
of
this
fort
was
with
Jivaji
and
Govaji
of
Gavli
or
Ahir
family.
Devgiri’s
King,
Bajirao’s
son
Daulatrao
awarded
the
control
of
this
fort
to
Jivaji
and
Govaji
when
he
had
visited
Thalner
and
noticed
that
the
fort
was
well
maintained
while
the
other
23
forts
in
the
nearby
region
were
in
ruins
In
1370
A.D.
Ferozeshah
Tughlak
won
the
area
of
Khandesh
and
appointed
Malikraja
Faruki
to
administer
the
region
of
Gujarat.
Thalner
was
made
his
capital
center.
The
very
next
year
the
Sultan
of
Gujarat
attacked
Malikraja
and
captured
his
territory
and
Malikraja
took
refuge
in
Thalner
fort.
After
his
death
in
1497
A.D.
the
control
was
passed
on
to
his
second
son.
This
went
against
the
will
of
the
first
son
who
then
alongwith
the
support
of
Sultan
of
Malwa
attacked
Thalner
and
took
it
under
his
control
in
1417
A.D.
In
1418
A.D.
the
Sultan
of
Gujarat
Mohammed
Begada
captured
Thalner
and
looted
the
nearby
provinces
and
in
1511
A.D.
he
handed
over
half
of
Khandesh
region
to
his
commander
in
chief
Malik
Hasanuddin.
He
allegedly
got
murdered
the
next
year.
In
1566
A.D.
Changez
Khan
who
was
the
Sultan
of
Gujarat
defeated
the
King
of
Khandesh
Miran
Mohammed.
The
control
of
this
fort
went
to
Akbar
in
1600
A.D.
and
during
this
period
the
fort
was
prosperous
and
had
vital
importance
being
on
the
trade
route
of
Surat-Burhanpur.
In
1750
A.D.
when
the
Peshwas
took
over
the
fort
it
was
handed
over
to
the
Holkars
and
then
it
was
further
passed
on
to
the
Nimbalkars
in
1800
A.D.
however
the
Holkars
took
it
back
the
very
next
year.
The
British
General
Sir
Thomas
Hissop
encountered
a
bloody
massacre
when
he
went
to
conquer
the
fort
in
1818
A.D.
This
conquest
is
known
to
be
one
of
the
bloodiest
conquests
in
history.
Around
250
Maratha
and
25
British
soldiers
were
killed
in
this
war.
