One of the Holy place located in Guwahati city. The road leads to the temple is very nice. Apart from visiting the temple, one will be amazed by its surrounding beauty and the screaming Waterfall. The place fills with local monkey, sometime you may witness monkey fight, however they are friendly to humans. For the heads-up, never park your vehicles in front of the shopkeepers, they are little bit rude in my opinion.

A great place to spend your weekend by self or with family and friends. If you really want some quality time and plan to revive your soul through the beautiful sounds of nature and animals, plan your trip early morning because it tends to get crowded as the day passes and that’s when you may not enjoy the most.

The temple was under renovation and hence couldn't enter inside. But it is definitely a nice place to visit. There is a statue of Vasista there and the surroundings are really nice.

Basistha temple, located in the south-east corner of Guwahati city, Assam, India, is a Shiva mandir. The history of the Basistha Ashram where the temple is located dates back to the Vedic age. According to legend the ashram was founded by the great saint Basistha (Vasishtha). This ashram is believed to be the home of sage Basistha. The ashram is located a few kilometers (10-12) from Guwahati, on the outskirts of Garbhanga reserve forest which has a population of elephants. This Garbhanga reserve forest is also a proposed butterfly reserve. Although the ashram has a temple but still the cave in which the Muni Vasistha is believed to have meditated is located 5 km inside the ashram. The ashram also has a waterfall. The site has evidence of a stone temple which once stood at this spot around 1000-1100 CE. A brick temple was built in mid 18th Century upon the remains of the stone temple of an earlier period. It is an octagonal shaped temple at the base with a polygonal sikhara over it. The temple has a sunken garbhagriha which is believed to have the foot impression of the sage Vasistha, who is believed to have had his asrama in this area in the remote past. The existing octagonal brick temple was built by Ahom king Swargadeo Rajeswar Singha during his period of reign from 1751 to 1769.

Basistha or Vasistha Temple is located in Beltola, at the outskirts of the Guwahati city. It is located near Garbhanga Reserve Forest which is populated by elephants and is also a proposed butterfly reserve. The temple was constructed by Ahom king Rajeshwar Singha in 1751-1769. The king also gifted 835 bighas of land to the ashram to build this temple. The temple is situated on the Vasistha ashram, the abode of saint Basistha. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple stands on the bank of mountain streams which originates from the hills of Meghalaya which in turn becomes river Basistha and Bharalu that flows through the city. The Kalika Purana has described the Basistha Temple as one of the seven Shaktipeeths. The history of the Ashram dates back to the Vedic age. The ashram was founded by the great saint Vasistha. Legends say that once saint Vasistha went to Kamarupa to worship goddess Kamakhya. When king Naraka stopped him from doing so, Vasistha cursed him. Vasistha built a hermitage at Sandhyachal and led his life meditating on Shiva. Vasistha muni is credited with writing the Vasistha Ramayana. Vasistha muni had created the ashram and is said to have died here. The grave of Saint Vasistha is seen here. A historic temple in the midst of nature. Just sit by the flowing waterfall and calm your mind. However, lot of settlement growing around the place which is destroying the ambience it used to have. Also, facilities such as toilet, cleanliness all have to be improved to allow more and more visitors to visit this holy place.
