Very nice place! We loved the introduction and demonstration. The local guide have a lot of knowledge and love for butterflies :) Small but well cared for place full of different kinds of butterflies.

We rallye enjoyed our visit ans would highly recommend it. During the explanation about the caterpillars we got some tea. It took an hour for the guy to show and explain everything to us. First the stadium of the butterflies, later we could see the chameleons and the bush babies, the machine they use for weaving and of course the butterflies. Lovely place, nice people and worth a visit!

The centre has a nostalgic feel especially when you think of butterflies and the beauty they add in nature..we were looking forward to a step back in nature and experiencing this in their natural environment..the host was knowledgeable especially in explaining the life cycle and showing us around but unfortunately the centre has a neglected look. The place is abit run down and even the butterfly sighting wasn't as expected which was disappointing as the uniqueness of it would have made the experience worth the entrance fee paid. The place has potential and most people would identify with the magical feeling of being in nature surrounded by the beautiful butterflies.

Butterflies are beautiful creatures! It's amazing that the local people can make an earning from the butterfly farming! The guide was good at explaining. Keep up the good work!

It's neat in concept. Great way for locals to make money by farming butterflies/cocoons. They sit you down for ten minutes and teach you about a catepillar-butterfly life cycle, and then bring you to a huge tent where butterflies fly freely. The plants are nice. Nice place to stop for thirty minutes. Price is roughly $6. They have a chameleon exhibit too, which I didn't visit. The butterfly center is not worth making a specific trip to, but if you happen to pass by and have some time on your hands, it's a nice visit you can say you did.

We had the best time visiting the butterfly center. Itis a very unique and peaceful place. There was something truly idyllic about walking around being surrounded by all those beautiful butterflies and the sounds from the forest. You could also tell how passionate our tour guide was about not just the butterflies but nature and animals in general. We also love the concept or idea behind the center: promoting sustainable use of natural resources while providing extra income for the locals there.

I loved this place because it is so peaceful and the butterflies are just beautiful. The idea behind this is also fantastic, to create a place like this to help conserving the butterflies and their habitat while supporting the locals. I learned a lot here and my guide was amazing:) and let's not forget about the cute chameleons that you can also spot there!

Nice looking butterflies and definitely a nice addition to your trips photo album, if you manage to catch a good picture of these never resting beautiful creatures.

fairly small and definitely NOT the 'largest butterfly enclosure in East Africa. Don't come only for a visit to the butterfly center, but combine your visit with Jozani forest. Entry is 10,000 TSH per person (we didn't receive a ticket because the receipt book was 'full'). Entry includes a (in our case non-english speaking) guide. Took some pretty amazing butterfly pictures!

Well worth adding as part of your visit to Jozani. The guides are knowledgeable and show you all of the stages of the butterfly and explain the project. The garden itself is beautiful and then at the end you visit thr chameleon garden and get to handle the chameleons. Entrance fee goes towards maintaining the project so its all for a good cause!

We spotted this from the side by the road as we drove to town and I'm so glad we stopped. The entry was really inexpensive, from memory I think it was $6 USD each. It's a local community initiative to provide income to locals and it's also interesting. They show you the different caterpillars, butterfly cocoons, and then you go into the butterfly house and can see them all flying around. They also have a number of chameleons on sight which were incredibly to see and a real highlight.

Amazing stop by for children and nature lovers even if you already did walk through jozani forest before, because this stop will not take more than 30min - 1 hours. After a free explanation you are asked if you want to pay for visiting the butterfly area to take pictures. I also got the chance to see camelions because its another project. Asante sana.

Not a place worth making a specific trip to. However a good place to visually learn about the stages in the life of a butterfly. The experience starts of at the entrance where you're shown the first 3 states of the butterfly. (Egg, Caterpillar and Pupa) Aftet which you're taken to a preserved tent where you get to see alot of fully grown butterfly. Truly beautiful.

The place is far from everywhere and if you are not in adventure is better not go. But if you go for sure that you are going to live an experience because the island is like this, anyways if you go to see butterflys there are not many varieties. The guy in the door that explain you everything is like Morgan Freeman in a scare movie so don't miss this part when you go, Is funny . They have 6 camalleon when you go outside you can stay to look at them and this part was the best.

We stumbled across this lovely place on Google maps as it was on route to somewhere else but we are so glad we stopped. The guide welcomed us and taught us all about the 4 stages that butterflies go through from eggs, caterpillars, chrysalis, and butterflies. We were shown some actual seeds, caterpillars and chrysalis before being taken to the butterfly enclosure. There were so many different beautiful butterflies and flowers that they were landing on. We even got to see some monkeys in the surrounding forest! The centre's income supports local families and only costs $6/person to enter the centre which is well worth it! I did kind of expect more butterflies though.

The butterfly centre was a beautiful experience. After arrival, the guide offered a detail explanation about the life of butterflies and how the centre works. After that, we entered the garden, which is a piece of forest with a nice fountain covered with a net, so the butterflies can wonder around without escaping. We had the chance to see the cocoons and it was wonderful to just be there and enjoy how they fly around and even, if you stay still and silent, they come and lay on you. You can remain in the garden as long as you want. And the best part of it is that the admission fees directly support the community, training butterfly farmers and improving the region.

Worth the visit! We just drove by and decided to stop and it was the most wonderful surprise. Won't take you more than 30-45 minutes and you get to have a Disney moment with butterflies, learn a lot about them, and support a community project!

The butterflies are so cool! And the place is very welcoming

  • 3/5 Ruby M. 3 years ago on Google
It is a project to support local people make living as they bring buttery cocoons and sell at the centre. You have to pay $6 as the entrance for a big net where all the butterflies would be flying openly. If you want to experience how it is like to be around a lot of butterflies, it is nice. Although there might not be a lot of them.

We stopped there spontaneous After jozani Forest Tour. Had a Good Time there. Butterflys, Chameleons and bush babys. A Local explained everything about them for us. They also have an old cotton machine and produce textils. After the small little tour he served us a free lemongras tea. Defintely a recommendation!

Zanzibar Butterfly Centre (ZBC) is on the main road between Zanzibar Town and Paje, near the village of Pete, and about two km west of Jozani-Chwaka National Park entrance. Numerous butterflies indigenous to Zanzibar are protected and bred here. One of the most beautiful creations of Almighty, butterflies are feast for eyes. Also they are savers of this biosphere. Come to Zanzibar. Visit this beautiful world of butterflies. Good luck.

Great initiative to help local community. The place is arranged in the interesting way. You can lear something as well as admire different types of butterflies.

For sure not the best activity to do in Zanzibar but it could be instructive for children or people that aren't familiar with butterfly. The entrance ticket (10$ each person) is very high considering where the place is, but on the paper a big part of it goes for the organization.

We spent a day in the area at the Jozani Forest, the Sea Turtle and Tortoise Sanctuary (strongly recommended btw), and finally the Butterfly Centre. The butterfly centre was really nice and relaxed. We got a short personal introduction, were shown some larvae, held a just-emerged butterfly in our hands, and then explored the place on our own. It isn't very big, but with some time and a camera you can definitively have fun there.

The butterfly center was the most beautiful trip we did in Zanzibar. We learned a lot of new information about butterflies and the enclosure is absolutely stunning. It felt like a fairytale. They also had chameleons that you could touch, which was definitely a first and a really cool experience. All in all I 100% recommend visiting!
