Authentic German experience. Nice big bar, lots of comfy tables and booths. Food is fantastic if you like German food, and generous portions. Ah the beer choices are impressive with a good half dozen on tap imported from Europe. Thomas the owner is very friendly providing excellent service. He even have a nice music all Elvis Presley soundtrack a small dance floor. And all to be had for very reasonable prices!! And my husband and I are anniversary he found out about it before we left he handed me a fresh bouquet of flowers. It made our anniversary so much better. Thank you Thomas! And he is the chef of the place and a damn good one! I'll vouch for Thomas. From appetizers to main course it's spot on. Very scrumptious foods indeed!!!

Fantastic little joint. The food here was incredible, excellently cooked and portion sized steak, my friends had the shrimp which was also delicious. Fun owner, nice atmosphere, great music, and tasty starters. Very relaxed also for those looking for something away from the hustle of main town. Highly recommend.

Going to this restaurant is an experience, l've been several times and it seems to be getting better and better, all our entrees and meals were all prepared fresh on the spot. The smoked tuna and salmon was excellent! Our meals were by far probably the best meals we've had to date here on this trip! I do not give this restaurant this rating lightly I'm here for 3 months and go and try 2 restaurants a week and by far it's been the best so far and l'm on my final 3 weeks! Thomas is an excellent chef and also a great guy! It's an experience you will not regret!

This is our third dinner at Papillon and our third time being 10000% blown away by how amazing this restaurant is. My parents surprised us with a reservation here on our anniversary because it's a tradition but they couldn't be with us this year so Thomas worked with them to plan this all for us ahead of time. Chef Thomas was incredibly kind and even went out of his way to have the place decorated with special "Happy Anniversary" signs and a cute table, which was his own idea to make our night even more special. Once again, the food was INCREDIBLE. I genuinely can't rave enough about this place. The SURF & TURF IS AMAZING. It comes out on a gigantic platter and is absolutely delicious. He even cut our dessert into this cute little heart to celebrate. Thomas goes out of his way to make sure everyone has an amazing experience. He is a very kind person and you can really tell he loves what he does. This restaurant is number one for a reason and definitely deserves it!!! We will definitely see you next year, Thomas!

I was there with my wife in 2018. I recommend this place to every person going to Puerto Plata as I did the other day. I looked up the address to send it to my co-worker and realized I hadn't left a review! It was absolutely the most memorable dining experience of my life. We rented a motorcycle, rode it the short distance out of town. After parking, we walked up the steps to this huge tiki hut built into the jungle. The restaurant is open air, a nice breeze coming through, the sounds of birds and surrounded by lush foliage and flower. The decor is eclectic and clearly curated by the chef over decades, the piece de resistance a larger than life pirate ship hanging over the bar. The chef (Thomas) greeted us, a warm and friendly character. We were the only people there. We had appetizers, entrees and dessert, all were impeccable. An American came in and asked us if we minded him smoking a cigar at the bar (we didn't). The next time Thomas came to check on our drinks, he informed us the American was buying for us. The wines Thomas recommended were phenomenal and we spent the evening sharing stories, the four of us. Make your reservations in advance. The chef makes food fresh and will pick up ingredients that day.

A fantastic experience start to finish. Great atmosphere, great food, best pina colada ever. How many places do you go to where the chef/proprietor greets you at the door, takes your order, fixes your drinks, cooks your dinner, visits you regularly during your meal, and graciously answers every question you can think of throughout the evening? Our party had goulash and onion pie as apps, three steak dishes and pineapple chicken as entrees, and mousse and cheesecake as desserts. All were executed flawlessly and presented beautifully. We salute Thomas - thanks for a lovely evening!

Wow!! This restaurant blew our expectations. A great atmosphere. Chef Thomas and his daughter were so kind and did an awesome job with our group of 9. Everyone was more then happy. The presentation, price and taste of all the meals was amazing as said by our whole group! A must try when visiting Puerta Plata.

We were a walk-in, not recommended for this restaurant as they are normally fully booked, but we were very lucky on a Tuesday night. This was a unique dining experience as the restaurant has been here for a long time, and your host is both table service and chief. So this is an intimate dining experience typically with only two or three tables. Food and drinks were all top-notch quality, taste, and in preparation. The prices are on the higher end for an out of town / resort restaurant but worth every peso. This is not the place for a quick cheap meal out but for that special date or occasion Our bill worked out to $2,000RD per head; and you could easily spend more. 5 stars all the way, we will be booking ahead next time.

Le Papillon is an amazing foodie experience, from the first course to the last. Chef Thomas creates dishes that look like works of art, while tasting delicious. We started with his smoked salmon, which was served in a glass dome with smoke inside, and was the best smoked salmon we’ve ever tasted. My husband had filet, cooked perfectly, and I had the tuna steaks in horseradish sauce; both were incredible. We ended the meal with the lightest, most delicious chocolate mousse. Thomas then brought us apricot brandy from Germany, to top it all off! This is a hidden gem in Puerto Plata; do yourself a favor, and call for a reservation immediately!! (The only bad reviews are from inconsiderate idiots who show up without a reservation, and have to be turned away. Don’t be those people!)

Horrible and embarrassing experience. We arrived at this restaurant due to the amazing reviews. We arrived and sat down at a table since we did not see a hostess. There were card games on our table so we grabbed them until someone would come and take our order. The owner came out and very furiously yanked the cards out of one of our friend's hand. He was very upset at us not having a reservation. In all honestly, he did not have to be so harsh. We were embarrassed in front of all the other guests and left. He could have asked us if we had reservations and politely explained. Make sure you call first if you want to support this furious man's business!

My 2nd time here (1st time was with my gf 4 years ago and this time I brought my family) and still one of the best meals I’ve had from all around the world! Chef Thomas makes everything fresh and he puts his heart and passion into delivering an excellent dining experience. It is definitely a must try whenever you are in Puerto Plata and Le Papillion is rated #1 on Trip Advisor for a reason. Remember to book a reservation through email or call around 4pm because spots always fill up quick. I highly recommend getting the Peppercorn steak and Pina Colada! The filet mignon and garlic shrimp are just as delicious!

Best food I have had in Dominican. Thomas is absolutely amazing host and chef. From the second we walked in the door till the moment we left he made sure we had everything we needed and made sure we left full and happy.

So I visited the restaurant in the second to last week of January 2023. I didn't have a reservation. I was in the mood for a surf and turf and I called to see if I can come. Mr. Thomas picked up and said if it is only me I can come. Took me 15 minutes to get there and the minute I got there Mr. Thomas welcomed me with open arms and immediately treated me like family. He lit the candle and I had the Pina coladas out of the pineapple and this had to be the best Pina colada I have had. The platter with the filet mignon shrimp kebab and the potatoes the portion sizes were huge and so delicious. I couldn't finish the plate but man it was so good. Mr. Thomas wrapped up the food and gave me flowers to give to my girlfriend and she loved it. From the minute I walked in I enjoyed every minute. Folks if you are reading this and you are traveling or in Dominican Republic do not hesitate to visit this restaurant and Mr. Thomas. He will treat you like family and you will love it. I plan to come back when I am in Puerto Plata. Thank you Mr. Thomas for a lovely dinner. Your kindness, and great cooking is special.

The experience here was absolutely wonderful. Thomas is a busy man- serving, cooking and taking care of his guests. We started out with Pina Colada's, they were served in a chilled Pineapple. They were delicious. We then ordered appetizers- Caribbean shrimp, escargot and garlic bread- all were amazing. For our entree's we had (5 people)- We ordered two Filet's with bernaise sauce- again delicious. The potatoes augratin were the best I have ever had. My son had shrimp fettucine- it was fantastic! My daughter had the surf and turf- shrimp and filet and her BF had the stroganoff. Everything was fresh, hot and all prepared by Thomas the owner. He was kind, friendly, efficient and all around a great guy. We loved the decor- it was an open air restaurant and the Elvis memorablilia. I would give everything a 10. My daughter and her BF liked it so much they went back for another date night.

Best meal I've had by far in the 4 years I've been visiting puerto plata , this place was recommended by several people so me and the wifey gave it a try. Reservations are highly recommend even tho it is a small restaurant, seats about 5 or 6 guest comfortably, they even have a bar. The atmosphere via very intimate and relaxing, I'm a huge Elvis fan so I loved the music and photos of him as entertainment. Nice aquariums also, okay now let's get to the food! Steak and shrimp was amazing ,I didn't even have to chew I just let them melt I'n my mouth. The potatoes au gratin OMG unbelievable and the corn was amazing! Be sure to order a pina colada you won't regret it, If you are on a budget stay home because this place is pricey but worth it! The chef Thomas was friendly and he even gave my wife flowers at the end of our date. Nice touch Sir ..be sure to tell Thomas that ROMELLO sent you! WE will definitely be back to try every single dish

Unbelievably sublime! Our party of 20 was extremely impressed & thrilled with the quality of every dish, beginning with the fresh bread & curry spread, flavorfully fresh salad with star fruit, shrimp in white wine sauce, fantastic seared tuna in white wine horseradish sauce, and finally the tender, juicy steak with a lovely black pepper sauce…MAGNIFICENT! This restaurant is not to be missed! Do yourself a huge favor and go!! You’ll be very glad you did!

Small of the beaten-road place. Food was great as well as the service. Wife and daughter especially liked the real Pina Coladas. I enjoyed a good old German beer. Definitely would go back again. Gracias
