Pretty good for everyday walks as itโ€™s right in the middle of a suburb! There are multiple walks, mostly easy with a few steep climbs for a couple of tracks. One would def see some beautiful birds and kangaroos in the forestโ€ฆ there is a proper walkway and directions put up everywhere to make it easy to find your way inside the forest. We enjoyed our walks there!!

Can take a bus to reach .It is an ideal spot to go for a nature walk, birds and kangaroos. And do not forget to close the gate every time. And the point where you can meet the kangaroo family is the Habitat link track where you can find kangaroos sleeping and eating grass in groups.

I recommend the Sunday 19am nature walk. Got a better understanding on how brittle a habitat is to culturalisation by man inevitable in suburbia. But the Forrest is well taken care of and looks wonderfull.

We went there in the late afternoon looking for wild kangaroos after some online research. It's around 1 hour from Melbourne cbd via public transport. We were lucky to find many kangaroos. There were cockatoos as well, but we didn't find many bird species. It isn't big and you can cover the trails easily in 1.5 to 2 hrs max. The place has washrooms and drinking water at the entrance. Highly recommended if you want to see kangaroos in the wild closer to the city.

I went for a few hours only to see kangaroos and I could see a few of them. I can't believe that you can see them free in a park in the middle of a city. That so good!

Gresswell Grassland is a hidden treasure, boasting exceptional accessibility and a diverse array of Melbourne's iconic flora and fauna, including epic blue tongue lizard, or the resilient River Red Gum trees. As you explore the park, you'll encounter plants like this Asperula, and rare species like the Matted flax Lilly, enriching your experience with the wonders of Victoria's volcanic plains. The gentle rustle of the Windmill Grass and the vibrant blooms of the Kangaroo Grass add to the park's ecological charm. Plus, with its excellent accessibility and a public barbecue area perfect for relishing a classic Melbourne tofu plant-based sausage sandwich, Gresswell Grassland earns its five-star rating with ease.

Gresswell Nature Conservation Reserves are part of an Aboriginal cultural landscape in the traditional Country of the Wurundjeri Peoples. Parks Victoria respects the deep and continuing connection that Traditional Owners have to these lands and waters, and we recognise their ongoing role in caring for Country. The Gresswell Nature Conservation Reserves, made up of Gresswell Forest, Gresswell Hill and Gresswell Habitat Link, protect 70 hectares of important flora and fauna habitat. Experience the area's diverse vegetation and abundant wildlife on the reserves' many walking trails, and explore this precious pocket of wilderness in Melbourne's north-east. Gresswell Forest Nature Conservation Reserve is the largest of the three Nature Conservation Reserves. Here you'll find remnant River Red Gum woodland that's home to many different bird and animal species. It is significant as one of the most intact examples of remnant Grassy Woodland in the Melbourne region Gresswell Forest Nature Conservation Reserve was first created as a buffer zone around a quarantine wing of the Mont Park Hospital in the early 20th century. The land was then excised from the hospital in 1976 and managed by La Trobe University from 1978 until 2011. Gresswell Hill Nature Conservation is part of the endangered Box Woodland environment and is dominated by Yellow Box and River Red Gums. Gresswell Hill is also considered to be regionally significant animal habitat. The nine hectare reserve was once part of the Mont Park Psychiatric Hospital grounds and formed a Nature Conservation Reserve in 1978. La Trobe University commenced management of the reserve in the mid 1990โ€™s at the time the land around it was developed for housing. Gresswell Hill once contained a former army signal tower and still contains a decommissioned water tower. 10 car park inside promises Street parking available Picnic and BBQ ON SPOT !

I went on a first date here. We walked for an hour along the extensive forest track network chatting. We saw an echidna, a whole family of kangaroos and a tree that looked like an alien. Then we sat on a park bench and made out for ages. Gresswell Forest is the perfect place to take someone on a first date... It's also 'technically' covid safe since it's outside.

There's just something very special about this forest/nature reserve and adjoining Gresswell Habitat Link, even though it's bordered by houses. It's hard to describe what makes it so. It could be the dry, gentle smell of the gums as the day warms up, the serenity, or the way the paths meander through. A number of kangaroos are seen throughout, and birds aplenty. Limited parking is available at the Greenwood Drive playground.

This place is a little hidden gem - you donโ€™t have to get too far inside the gate before it feels like youโ€™re really out bush. Only the distant traffic or occasional helicopter gives it away. We visited midday so no roo sightings, but lots of rosellas, skinks, and the distinctive sound of pobblebonks from the billabong.

Great walking/running track! though I wasnt fortunate enough to see any kangaroo, literally walked around for 4 hours without seeing one, it was still a nice day out. Found an echidna though. super cute Update: so I came back twice and actually had to go through the gate to the โ€œhabitat linkโ€ to find the roos. There are still few of them in the main reserve but very hard to find during the day

A fenced, environmentally protected nature park with gravel and unsealed pathways through the forest. If you are lucky, and at certain times of the day, you may spot a kangaroo or even a family of roos in this forest. In the centre of the forest is a large pond full of thick reeds and frogs, that you can hear in warmer weather. There are no plastic playgrounds here, although kids can play here and get back to nature. This is paradise to bird lovers, with kookaburras, tawny frogmouths, rosellas, that you can see walking in the forest. There are only 3 park benches in the entire forest but you can find other natural rest areas on fallen tree trunks if you need. The forest can also get muddy with puddles in some areas after heavy rain.

This reserve is perfect for a weekend bushwalk. Lots of greenery, chirping birds & a walk in the woods made it a very calming experience. The kids loved it as well. One thing to note for those with prams. You can't take the pram through the tiny entrance but can pass it over the gate.

There are in fact three Reserves here and are easy to explore on foot. I'd suggest in the hot weather you wear solid footwear because of snakes.

Lovely parkland Good to see bicycles are not allowed into the reserve Very intetesting to see tipee's made from fallen branches ๐Ÿ˜€ Parkland needs a decent pond, the 1 along Billabong trk looked terrible & possibly nothing living in it because of the dull greyish merky coloured pond water! Great for walking around

Great "secret" greenspace in suburbia. Well recommended.

  • 4/5 Judith M. 3 years ago on Google
A small bushy park with pathways throughout. As it is a nature reserve, dogs are not permitted in the main park area. Also the gateways are restrictive. If you have mobility restrictions I would not recommend this park. A wheelchair would not get through the gate that is designed to keep out foxes and other predators. Also the pathways are quite rutted so you need to watch your step. Having said all that, the park is pretty and makes you feel like you are in the bush.

  • 4/5 Stella on G. 3 years ago on Google

The reason I love this park is that it brings back such happy memories with my Mother. We used to walk from our house in Villa Street, then through the park, cross the road & right down to the back where the river bends & there was sand to sit on. Decades ago, boys used to swim to the other side, climb up & swing off a rope. The park thesedays has a fantastic kiddie play area & a couple of ovals. A lovely place to visit to have some quiet time.

Growing up in Heidelberg, I have many happy memories of Heidelberg Park. As a child, it had a small playground with swings and interesting fallen pine trees to climb on. The play equipment is gone and a playground has been put in across the road. Nonetheless, Heidelberg Park is still a very pleasant place to visit between its lush green lawns, a walking/cyclist track, a cricket oval and a wealth of greenery. Recently, I revisited Heidelberg Park with friends who live locally and have young kids. We spread a picnic blanket beneath the lush green pine canopies to decompress after lunch. When sitting under these canopies, a strong pine smell eminates bringing back great memories of childhood.
