I have a family member that comes to Austin hospital on a regular basis due to suffering from cancer and whenever I have come to the hospital with him the nurses they use to check people in are some of the rudest people I’ve ever come across, imagine coming in to a hospital already sick then having people treat you in a disgusting manner. I don’t know how I feel about leaving my loved ones alone with these people since they give out a very much careless attitude towards their patients. Always a very unpleasant experience

Austin is drowning in self-serving bureaucracy. Getting information on an in-patient involves layers of operators and nurses. Hospital staff doggedly stick to communication protocols or do not care - either way try to find out details of patients symptoms or diagnosis is like wading through molasses. On many occasions enquiries about an in-patient left me with little to no meaningful information, frustrated and disappointed. Phone messages to doctors were seldom returned. Messages to social workers never.

If you wish to die, this hospital will be the best choice to make. My partner went to the ER for the sever injury that she cannot even sleep properly or move. It is clearly not just a muscle, more related to neurological issues. 9 hours was the waiting period for the person who is in excruciating pain, staff is not even consider to listen nor read about detailed information my partner provided. Call me i am entitled, but if you are not capable enough to take care of patient who cannot take pain meds because of tumor - you can at least provide alternative option to the patient for other places. And i repeat, 9 hours to wait and get done. Might as well just die on the floor if that is *emergency* service.

The doctors, nurses, and staff members are very kind and compassionate. I believe they have been doing their best within the current conditions. I hope they can get some well-deserved rest after saving lives every day.

Myself, my son and numerous others have been treated like cattle, pieces of meat and general nuisances. Don't even get me started on the manner in which my elderly, dying parents have been treated. My solicitor says I have one hell of a lawsuit when my parents suffer a serious injury or die. This is due to the poor care, that isn't complying with their duty of care to our parents and putting the burden of their care back on us. I'd rather my parents were safe, well and living their best lives, with what they have left, rather than living with the constant stress and worry we're under and a large monetary pay off! This is neglect and elder abuse!

The receptionist at the Austin Sleep clinic is the rudest woman I have ever spoken to. What a nightmare. I asked if I could speak with someone else who wasn’t so rude. I understand it’s a public hospital but Jesus Christ, some manners wouldn’t go astray.

Spoke to an obnoxious nurse today named Kerry from the Austin Hospital in 3 North Spinal Ward who claimed she was the nurse unit manager. She was irritated by my phone call from the get go, she was dismissive, spoke over me, did not listen to me. She was unhelpful and quite frankly mean. I understand everyone is under pressure working in the hospital, I too work at a hospital but I have some kind of humanity and compassion. Austin needs to look at retraining their nurses on how to communicate in a friendly and compassionate manner with patients and family members. Really disappointed Austin Health.

I have been misdiagnosed at this hospital twice. Won’t be coming back here for sure, especially because the last wrong diagnosis has caused me to decline and I haven’t been able to walk for the last 10 months at a young age. the diagnosis prior has left me with a chronic issue of pain I will have for the rest of my life. Nurses are fabulous of course.

After coming in early morning I for stomach pain, they barely communicated with me. Said they would give me pain relief when I was in their fast track admittance but never did. Never gave me water. Spent 12 hours there to find out they discharged me without telling me so I had been waiting in the busy waiting room for 4 hours for nothing. Terrible communication between departments, had a person crying out in pain for ages and they weren't offered any pain relief

Went to Austin hospital emergency. 5 students learnt from my suffering one by one, added to their knowledge, lied down there for 9 hours in agony, finally a 12 yo GP rocked up to give me a painkiller. Moral; there is no emergency

I went into emergency after overdosing on pain medication. I was kept overnight and moved to a quiet ward that had a nurse assisting it. All I asked all night was to get a uti test. I often get them from my injury and they play havoc on my emotions and mood. I was given a cup in ER downstairs. I took it to 2 other wards with me when moving. They had all night and all morning to dip it and I would have had Anti-biotics. It was sitting there with my breakfast in the morning. I asked a heavily pregnant nurse several times who didn’t do anything. I wasn’t even seen my a doctor but only the mental health person before I was discharged. They threw out my sample without ever testing it because I followed it up with the CATT team and was told there wasn’t any record, but the nurse told me nothing came up and she didn’t seem honest because I asked her so many times and she was grumpy. My gp is away and I don’t have the means to go get tested and have it done again but I still have the same symptoms. How hard is it to do your job? There were at least 10 different staff that could have done it at any time. They already had me strapped to a monitor. I’ve worked in busy medical environments and it wasn’t busy that night. For me to be chasing this 2 weeks later and being in pain and discomfort because I was ignored. It’s really pathetic The curtains were open where my bed was all night. About 10 student doctors saw the patient next to me in the morning and just overflowed into my room. When I asked them to close the curtains, one of them gave me a dirtiest look. It’s not fun being in hospital. Show your patients some respect. Do your job that requires less than 2 minutes of your time.

I came in for my scheduled surgery on the 15th of November. Life saving surgery for me as it’s changed my life for the better. I want to thank all the surgeons, nursing staff and pain management team for the care I received. Thankful for this new chapter in my life that will allow me to live a longer and healthier life. Warm regards Zoe

Only reason I'm giving 2 stars is because of outstanding services in2019. Austin has had serious "operational problems " for years. They still do. Lost referrals,no communication between their departments, lack of follow-up, and they don't share reports with your GP. I've been waiting for 18months for neurological/neurosurgical appointment. My condition has deteriorated badly. I have little to no use of my hands, keep having falls and back pain so bad I can't sleep most nights. I also have a history of recurring cancer. I've had CT scans done else where. They show my spine has become worse. Iwas told by specialist clinics that I won't be seen in foreseeable future. The patient experience person doesn't care. Waste of time trying. If they had the decency to advise my GP that they didn't intend to see me, I could have been referred elsewhere. I'm really scared the damage done is irreversible. Or a cancer metastasis.

3 north nurse Kerry from Austin was horrible to deal with. She was rude and unhelpful, filled with attitude. Family members are stressed already and are not able to visit their loved ones admitted to hospital, we don't need further tension from impolite nurses on a power trip.

86 Year old mum went in for urgent medial assistance staff were generally good not as good as last time Admin / Doctors were terrible 1. they conducted an operation with out approval or knowledge of her son who has medical power of attorney. ( mum does not have the capability to make an informed consent which they knew) 2. She was discharged without letting any of the family know why she was admitted and what the root cause was ( it was not related to the OP) 3 no discharge paperwork was given or medical advise on diet or how to handle the patient after the OP 4. no post op follow up at all a week later 5. original problem not solved Avoid this hospital if you have the option

Most chaotic and disorganised emergency room I've ever seen. On arrival you're told to go to Window 1 or 2, but not told anything about the long informal 'queue' for each Window, snaking around the room. Cue much confusion, people pushing in and at least one person breaking out in tears, defeated because they don't know *how* to navigate this chaos while alone and clearly in a lot of pain. Coles Deli does 'waiting' better than this - using numbered tickets or buzzers would have transformed this into a much easier experience. Has nobody in management considered this? Surely the first step to healing is not to be made confused, anxious and frustrated the moment you walk in. While I am thankful that the doctors did diagnose my condition; with one doctor in particular being excellent, another doctor also failed to care for me properly; by giving very lax hand-waving directions to 'go down that corridor and you'll find us' while I was in a confused state with a splitting migraine (which I had told them about). This resulted in me getting lost and back 'outside' in the emergency room, feeling vulnerable with a Cannula in my arm. I had to queue up for the triage window all over again just to speak to someone who could get me back 'inside' and reunited with the doctor. All because that doctor hadn't bothered to walk me the 20 paces up the corridor to the correct door themselves. Only at the very end of my 10+ hour stay was I offered two Panadol for the splitting migraine I'd told each of the care staff about. I would have had better pain relief at home. Mixed feelings about leaving a 2 star review because ultimately I did get access to some advanced medical care including a CT scan; but Austin really have to re-think the basics, to do their doctors and patients justice and this ought to be called out.

Attended emergency as I had a fall at home at 21.30 Mon 02.01.23. Massive haematoma on back of head. Spent 7.5 hrs waiting for doctor with a collar on. Saw a female doctor at 05.00 am Tues 03.01.23. Told I needed a scan so collar could be removed. Had ecg done the a male doctor came and spoke to me with female doctor. They assessed my spine for any injury removed collar and discharged me. No scan done. Now 8 days later I still can't sleep on that side. I have a spongy spot o my head that tingles and painful. Service was disgusting 😒

Both the "screener" at the door and the nurse behind the counter were rude to the point of near-hostility. Neither seemed interested in hearing what was actually wrong with my wife, and were much more concerned with telling me that I wasn't allowed to wait with her, despite her broken ribs making it near-impossible to do anything on her own. They of course didn't know any of these details, as they actively interrupted her anytime she tried to talk. An absolute disgrace.

Achilles tendon rupture: came in at 9pm. No sound available. Waited until 4am to get a cast on my leg. I went back home to come back at 9am. They took off my cast saying it was wrong (then I understood why it was so painful). I waited until 3 or 4pm to see a doctor after my ultrasound. They put a new cast on my injured leg/foot, booked a specialist for the next Thursday, more than a week away from the injury. My leg is in pain. The muscles are contracting every day more, the cast is loosening up and I can't do anything at the moment. I rang the hospital to explain my pain and fear that the meeting is a bit too far from my needs and an initially rude person told me "I can't do anything, you have to wait". I don't blame the dude over the phone. He must be taking hundreds of calls like mine every day. But it is what it is, don't expect a good service from a public hospital. And not because of the staff working there, but because of this no sense system where people that can't afford private health are destined to be at risk constantly.

The decline in standards at Austin's Emergency department is more than obvious. The quality of care is deplorable. I'm sure some staffs are trying to do their best; others don't, and practices observed are anything but substandard and negligent. The conditions patients and staff are asked to withstand is appalling. I would not attend an emergency department unless in the brink of collapse. I waited 6 hours and, dispite the immense pain I was in, I nonetheless left. What I witnessed made me feel even more unwell, and, without any formal authority and unable to do much, I thought best to get the hell out of there. Very sad state of affairs.

stuff yelled at us across the room telling me and my family so lower our voice! Even tho my mother was the patient which has dementia and doesn't understand her voice level. They also asked us not to close the blind not considering our privacy. There was a blood spill on the bed sheet she was on. Tried 3 times to find a vain l for a cannula. Otherwise the waiting time wasn't long they had results and tests done immediately.

Worst experience of my life…arrogant and heartless nurses…my eyes were full of tears standing right infront of the nurse telling her it’s emergency. I felt like I was nearly to death but still waited for 3 and half hours in emergency area, right now it’s 2:50am and suffering my bad health at my home. Later, I asked the lady in the receptions how long it will take to see the doctor, she said “I have removed your name from emergency part it might take another 4-5 hours”…Seriously??? I was crying having headache, I was hardly breathing, I had nose bleeding… and she said go see your GP, it’s not emergency. If it wouldn’t be emergency, why would I drive half an hour at 10 o’clock at night to be there? I was not able to see my GP at 10 o’clock at night that why I was in emergency…but they asked me to wait till morning and still wasn’t sure that I would get a chance to see the doctor. Next time I would better die than visiting here…because it’s similar to waiting for the whole night or day to see the doctor…. then, why is it called emergency?….. :(

Mostly great hospital but you have a problem I think I can fix. My visits there have never been for a terminal illness, I am not dying but to not allow a spouse to be there for his wife of close to 40 years as she drew her final breath is very wrong. Why not give people in this situation an n95 mask and let them be there, not that people die alone. This is sickening to think you are devoid of the necessary empathy and compassion you normally have in your interactions with me.

Very difficult to get any information. The Doctors rarely come to see you, and although the nurses are doing there best they are limited in what they are able to say or what they know. The food portions are also very small, leaving you always hungry, and they did not like me going outside for a smoke even though the physiatrist gave me permission, dome of the nurses blatantly lied saying I was not allowed out, they do realize this is not a prison.

Beautiful service and extra care from ED team as well as Paediatrics team. My baby had a badly swollen eye and had to come to ed at night. I was first impressed by the motto “Register like a life depends on it” at the registration and really, they treated us seriously and attentively. After 3 days my baby has been getting much better because all the nurses and paediatricians wholeheartedly took care and constantly followed up my baby’s condition no matter day or night. I dont know how to thank you them enough and hope this review can do something. Special thanks are sent to Mary, whom we first met on the very first night at Paediatrics cos she has always been so sweet and helpful to us, and to Phoebe who frequently checked on us every time she had a shift and is super friendly I have to say. On top of that, all the nurse team and doctos are too wonderful and it is such a lucky chance to meet them all. 10 stars would be my choice if there is higher rating.

Never Answered Phone in wards and when you go there they reduce ring volume and don't Answer phone and dont care and keep chating between them. This is so pathetic and they need more money for not doing their job. Govt should review all Hospital by camera about their work performance. I feel for receptionist who try to transfer phone to relevant departments.

Absolutely disgusting service. Avoid at all costs! My father had an urgent operation booked at this hospital. He was waiting on the date and details of the operation. There was no communication from the hospital at all. When he made contact, according to the hospital, they had they had "lost his operation in the system". This delayed it by more than a month. What hospital loses the operation? This delay only put my father in further discomfort, so much so we were forced to call the ambulance. I was put in the scenario of driving him to the Austin Hospital as ambulances were exhausted at the time. At the ER that night, the seated area was full, and the line was long -- as expected. Only a single window was opened originally, and a woman with her baby was being treated at that window. However, what shocked me was the sheer nonchalance and no-care factor from the nurses themselves: walking around the office in casual convo, laughing amongst themselves while the ER was in chaos. As we were seen, the nurse who took my father's blood squirted it all over the floor and on his clothes. Due to the severity of the situation, this nurse also told us that he would get the next bed. Almost 10 hours later, he was still left waiting overnight. Fed up, he told the desk he was going to admit himself to a private hospital instead, to which the young nurse replied with attitude that he should have just done that in the first place. She was told that his original surgery was booked at the Austin Hospital, so that's why we had come there for the convenience of both parties. What a joke! The service and care were abysmal. My father was then taken to a private hospital where he received the very best of care, and was operated on. He gladly cancelled the delayed operation at the Austin Hospital.

Went into ED as I was referred by nurse on call to attended as I had severe abdominal pain to the point I couldn’t walk with also severe dehydration from emptying my bowels more then 8 times a day. I was not treated nicely by the doctors and nurses, them thinking I was fine and didn’t know how to diagnose me or assist with my dehydration. They kept me waiting for over 7 hours in the treatment room with the doctor saying “oh I haven’t forget about you” then sending me home to see my GP as that’s the best way to medically observe me. Why couldn’t they tell me this earlier? All they gave me was pain relief and kept me waiting. I did not feel looked after at all. Never can attend the Austin after this experience. If I wasn’t in severe pain I would not have attended emergancy to seek help.

Absolutely atrocious hospital. 7 different peoples names were called wrong because 1 nurse couldnt pronounce basic names like David or Zac correctly. I sat in the ER for 3 hours after vomiting blood and was told to go home. 2 days later id found out i had ruptured my spleen. DO NOT come here unless you love nurses that cant speak english or doctors that are incapable of doing their job. All that talk about supporting health workers should be shoved into the trash. DO WHAT YOU ARE PAID TO DO

I was admitted to Short Stay on 17/1/24 via ED, Holly made my experience there very comfortable. Later that day I was transferred to ward 8 East for a 2 day stay where I was seen by Dr Nelson Chen who has a 'straight down the line' attitude of competence. Nurses Cherry, Nicole & Dahlia went out of their way to make my stay & ongoing treatment easy, pharmacist Anjali was very thorough with the discharge medication. I noticed a very relaxed & efficient demeanor among the staff on the floor who attributed their longevity of service to a happy workplace. Not surprised that all this translates to a high recommendation from me.

While I'm thankful for public healthcare, I believe a lot more could be done to help nurses and ambulance staff understand how to assist aged patients suffering with dementia. My mother lives in an aged care home, she suffers from dementia. She was rushed to hospital last week with respiratory issues. The CT scan she was supposed to have didn't happen. The Austin then organised a CT scan as an outpatient. The aged care home organised an ambulance to take her there today. The ambulance couldn't park right next to the hospital so the driver had to push mum a fair way to the entrance using her walker which is not a wheelchair and did not have a foot rest on it. Mum had to 'lift her feet' all the way there and back. She didn't know why she was there, had no answers to all the questions they had for her, didn't know her name or where she lived. It was touch and go whether the ambulance driver could take her back to the aged care home or get another ambulance which would have meant mum would have had to wait for hours to go home. Very lucky I was there.

One of the better hospital's in Melbourne but the Acute Psychiatric Unit department needs better management and more funding. In my personal opinion, the nurses and caretaker's should receive better wages than most of the doctors because they often do more work for less payments. And some of the nurse's clearly have a better grasp and understanding than the doctor's in terms of physical and mental illness and the struggle of living with such conditions, despite not having the same qualifications. Nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to stay too long.

After breaking my ankle and spending two days both in emergency and on the surgical ward, I have to say the care was excellent. The nurses were patient, caring and friendly and were literally running at times they were so busy. All the staff were friendly and professional and after listening to the way some patients spoke to them, I think they were saints not to strangle them.

I work at the Austin and I have never found it a very pleasant place to work, too many egos, as a out patient even even worse, will go else where, should have known better. The physio at the orthopaedic clinic 2 was not very helpful I had anphone appointment at 9.30 , definitely no one rang so I rang around 10.30 and she claimed she had rung me 3 times and she was not at fault, I no for a fact she did not ring, she was quite the know it all and not very help full, I don't want a physio to talk to I would like to speak to a doctor, why dose the Austin do this, I need proper help not a know it all manic physio.

came in on Wednesday due to extreme back pain and brain fog, barely able to move or walk. I had intense brain fog and could not talk properly. my partner took me to austin. we were told only patients could enter. i tried to explain to the lady and the first window i was struggling to communicate and move needed my partner to assist me. she condescendingly told me i was communicating fine (which was completely untrue) but she said we could speak to the nurses. fortunately the nurses were okay with my partner staying however the nurse putting my information was completely abrupt and disrespectful. whilst i was struggling with immense pain and brain fog I was scolded as my private heath card did not have my legal name, which led my partner to tell the woman she did not need to be so abrupt, i was then scolded as my GOVERNMENT SUPPLIED heath care card expired in a week. after this woman left i was told i would get my bloods taken. I waited several hours, asked when i would get the tests done, and was still made to wait, while patients who arrived after me had theirs done. i was in agonising pain and desperately wanted help. when my bloods were finally taken the nurse entirely unnecessarily brought up my “mental health concerns”, which were only expressed to one nurse when i told her i had PTSD and did not want to be alone at a hospital. this comment made me feel degraded and erased. It made me feel as though these nurses only saw me as someone with mental health issues and not a patient in serious pain that needed help, this influences my belief that they put off getting me to a doctor as they did not take my sickness seriously due to mental health. after waiting 5 hours i did not see a doctor and went home in pain. Not to mention I am a non-binary person and through my whole experience at the hospital i was not asked for my pronouns once and was misgendered the whole time which made me extremely uncomfortable. It’s unacceptable that in a time like this patients are not being asked for their pronouns because it is harmful and painful feeling invisible and disrespected. After i left the hospital I had a fever of 38-40 for 4 days straight and after blood tests have found out i may have an infection that has spread through my body. this could have been identified at the hospital had they seen me. the nurse here need far more training on how to treat patients with kindness and respect. will definitely never be returning and am truly upset about my experience.

Mum went in for severe back pain this weekend. She got an x-ray, some panadol and sent home with no pain relief by the short term stay unit. You really wouldn't wish this hospital on any one you cared for. Am now left calling an ambulance yet again with instructions not to go to back to the Austin Hospital. The lack of professionalism and competence of this hospital beggars belief.

The health is broken at the Austin hospital. I need a scan for my back and I have been waiting 3 months to get it done. 5 years ago they would have seen me straight away. Last time I was at the Austin, I waited a very long time just to get checked to see if i was okay after having a seizure. The hospital could much better at seeing patients quicker.

Had to go there with an ambulance from an accident scene. My wife and my mother were the patients. My mother had language barrier and was frustrated to be alone and my wife have white coat syndrome and was scared. I had to keep go in between cubicles to calm both down. My wife got discharged on a wheelchair about 10minutes before my mother and I bought her into my mother’s cubicle to wait for mum. The young nurse came and asked my wife to go out the emergency department and wait for us to join her after my mum get discharged. I explained the whole situation to her very politely and she gave me an awkward look and left without saying anything. After 2 minutes she came back again and said your wife can’t stay in here with you, we have a policy that every patient should have only 1 visitor and I explained to her again that my wife is not a visitor, she was a patient and she has WCS. She started being rude and yelling at me in front of the other patients and doctors. The doctor came and I explained everything to him and told him that if you want respect from the public, the health team need to respect the public as well. I was already frustrated and scared because of the accident and the attitude of the nurse that night made everything worse. By the way, I am also a health student and I obey the rules but this was more a race issue. It wasn’t the first time I experiences racism acts in Australia.

Used to sort of be an OK hospital. My wife had an appointment with nuerology over a year ago. Doctor advised he will make another appointment in 6 months to make sure my wife is OK. After 6 months I telephoned and was advised my wife is in the system and an appointment will be made for her. Later I telephoned 2 more times. It has now been way over 1 year and still no appointment???? My wife has a problem. If the system will allow me I would give 0 stars.

Avoid here at all costs! I was here about a week ago roughly due to severe pain & etc. ( I wasn't able to function as a human being basically) I was treated poorly by doctors & nurses. They didn't listen to me or my carer about what was going on with me at all, and was very rude towards us even though we were being respectful towards them. They didn't even help me & discharged me within 2 hours, saying there's nothing wrong & that they didn't even have specialists to help someone like me in emergency situations. I suffer from a chronic pain condition and I'm wheelchair bound . DON'T COME HERE IF YOU HAVE ANY CHRONIC PAIN CONDITIONS!!

Arrived at the ED last night around 8pm with my mum who had a serious condition, sat there until 3am, asked the nurses how many patients were in front of us there was still 10 patients! In the 7 hours we were waiting, about 5 people were called up to see the DR, there were very unwell patients falling asleep across the chairs and in their wheelchairs, other patients were looking after each other instead of the nurses or drs, the patients with more serious illnesses appeared to be put at the bottom of the line, I have never seen such poor quality of care, we left at 3am without being seen due to the exhaustion and lack of empathy the staff displayed.

Doctors in hospitals play a crucial role in providing medical care, diagnosing illnesses, prescribing treatments, and overseeing patient care. "I had a major liver resection surgery where they try spent 10 hours saving my life. I was brought in as an emergency and sent to surgery within just 5 days." All doctor and Also certified nurses in the ICU being professional, But some nurses in regular rooms may not be as attentive. In the past few days in the regular hospital room, many nurses who are here for training have been loud and inattentive to every patient.

Austin Health home care is second to none. The nurses, pharmacists, physios are very caring, well informed and professional. My stay in the infectious ward 5 West was again second to none. Medical staff, nursing staff, spiritual counselling, physios, allied health assistants were great. They really want you to recover fully if possible. Special mention to Michael from allied Health assistance Thanks

We attended Austin Hospital on 12/12/19 and are very pleased with the service and care the doctors and nurses have provided to my husband who had Coronary angiogram done, Everything was explained to us very well and the nurses were Amazing and very caring. The cardiologist department followed up with my husband the next day to see how everything is going and if he was in any pain. Thanks for the great service, God bless you all ?

BAD, went to the ER last week and then was sent to short term stay. The doctor sent me home and told me to do a urine test and sample can be dropped off at any medical center and they will call me back when they have the results. I did what needed to be done and contacted the pathologist center where my results was sent to, they mentioned they have sent the results back to the doctor already 4 days ago. When I called Austin hospital, I was told my results are NOT there and there is no such doctor by that name that is written on the referral paper!!! (Note, I contacted the switch board, the pathology dept, the ER dept, the results center. NONE of them can give me any answer)

My wife had an appointment today. At screening I advised I was the carer and had 1 covid vaccination. I was told to go outside and do a covid test and take a picture of the result. The patient behind me was there with her carer and the carer had no vaccinations. No problem advised to wear a mask and go through. So how does this work? 1 set of rules for those we don't like the appearance and one set of rules for those we like? SHOCKING discrimination. SHOCKING Austin is putting my health and safety at risk. We did not attend the appointment we departed from Austin hospital. If the system will allow me I would give 0 stars.

On October 13th, while doing my daily walk, I tripped on the pavement and dislocated my shoulder. Went straight to the ED at the Austin and within two hours I was on my way home. The pain was unlike any other I’ve experienced and at no stage was I kept waiting. I cannot commend the staff in ED more highly. Each one was caring and professional and I felt that I couldn’t have been in better hands. Thank you so much especially in these trying COVID times.

We are at the Austin hospital right now, they are telling us our father is dying.. they told us he has severe brain damage without doing any scans or showing us proof and we should just let him die. They refused to put his dialysis machine back on so his system can get filled with toxic they said his better of dead and for us to give up and they refuse to give any more treatment. His heart rate is steady no temperature. They want us to pull the plug and They did a CAT scan which came back clear with no brain damage, now two days later, they are telling us we should pull the plug because he has severe brain damage without conducting any other scans… when asked for the proof, they called the Police on us.

The Austin Hospital is of the highest calibre we have in Victoria, world class as far as I’m concerned. My elderly mother suffered a stroke a few days ago there was no wait the nursing staff, doctors, neurologist were absolutely amazing. They did their best to make her as comfortable and pain free as possible and received excellent care probably better than a private hospital. My mother did pass away which was expected under these circumstances. The ambos were unbelievable they arrived within a few minutes including a stroke unit it was incredible to watch them attend to my mothers needs in this traumatic situation. Well done and a big thank you to the staff at The Austin Hospital and the Ambulance Stroke Unit which worked on her. God bless you for all your hard work! Thank you Mary

Waited 2 years for this public hospital appointment to see a rheumatologist at Heidelberg repatriation rheumatology department which is part of the Austin Hospital, admin changed my appointment day and time without my knowing so I was told I would possibly have to come back another day after driving for an hour to get there ! The receptionist was not particularly friendly in fact she was rude so zero stars for her, but after words with her she did agree to see if one of the rheumatologists would see me, luckily for me they did, I saw "Rebecca leung" and she was amazing, really friendly and patient, she explained everything in detail and answered all my questions, she didn't rush me in and out of there like other specialists I have seen which was what I was expecting given that she had squeezed me in, she seems to really know her stuff as well, would absolutely recommend her ?

Leaving this review as a thank you to everyone at the Austin for the past couple days. Went to emergency with severe abdominal pain and vomitting (several hours after seeing a GP in another clinic that specifically told me I do not have appendicitis). Though wait time was a bit long (understandable due to high demand that day), they quickly suspected appendicitis, had me on pain meds and talking to a surgeon as soon as possible, set me up with great nurses that were more than accommodating, technicians for testing that couldn't have been nicer, to have my appendix removed early Saturday morning (it was indeed appendicitis). The nurses made me feel very comfortable and calm despite being my first ever surgery and experience with hospital admission, and helped me with every need and question I had while also caring for other patients. The doctors even allowed me to have a photo of my appendix during the surgery after my odd request of asking for one (as a microbiology student, I found it very interesting). Thanks a lot for the utmost care and compassion from the nurses, doctors, surgeons and technicians during a hard time for my family and I. You're all fantastic at your jobs!

I am absolutely disgusted by the complete lack of treatment that I received from the general surg/breast screen clinic. I had my MRI in June and received no information following this appointment for months. When I finally had a telehealth appointment confirmed (which I changed my work schedule for) the doctor did not even bother to call. To top it off I have just receievd a text message reminding me of my scheduled ultrasound for this Monday which noone has advised me of at any stage! So disappointing to see these medical staff using covid restrictions as an excuse to not bother doing their jobs!

I had a very mild heart problem(2weeks after vaccine) on my way to work. I drive past the Austin everyday on my way to work. The emergency staff were amazing. After asking the appropriate questions about covid they wheelchaired me into emergency (there was someone else infront of me)with chest pain and hooked me up to the machine to measure my heart. Straight away I was wheelchaired to ER. Blood thinners etc. Angiogram and heart X-ray almost instantly. I can't believe I had chest pain after vaccine. They were amazing how fast they reacted to a genuine emergency. I can understand how people get upset about staff and management BUT we all have to realise they can only do what they can do at the time. Miracles aren't bought or paid for... The nursing staff in ward 5 were fantastic... They had alot to deal with and they were coping at this strange time... Thank you Austin hospital staff and doctors. Life changing stuff...

If I could rate this hospital a 0 I would. The most heartless and disrespectful nurses at the emergency department you will ever meet. As a healthcare worker myself it’s so sad and frustrating to see nurses treat patients with no care, especially when a patient has presented to the emergency with pneumonia, difficulty breathing and just 5 days after an abdomen surgery. My opinion to anyone who wants to present to this ER…….. DONT!

Lack of professionalism and empathy in this age, barbarians.

Wonderful Hospital.. a tad noisy.. but the noise was fun noisy as the overstretched Nurses caught up with each other. I really can’t commend these hard working Nurses enough, they were all magnificent under clearly trying circumstances ie government financing insufficient.. what’s new? Not one of them complained about the lack they just carried on with what they had to make their patients as comfortable and happy as possible. Five Stars!

Our very independent Mum, Ivy 86yo was treated for a growth on her liver at the Austin in March 2022 and requires follow up scans every 3 months and the last three scans have come back as all is okay. The relief and confidence that this has given her and us is priceless. Mum even decided to travel from Vic to Qld earlier this year to visit and this is the same woman that 2 years ago said she was not travelling anymore but this operation and the magnificent care she received from the Austin has provided her with a new lease on life and the confidence to travel. Thank you Team Austin, much love and appreciation from us all and particularly our Mum.

My comment refers to a switch board operater Anna.. at Austin Health. Her voice was cold and rude it sounded like she hated her job and just didn't want to answer any more calls, she was so rude I asked her if she actually worked there? maybe I rang the wrong number, Receptionists and Switch Board Operators are the back bone of any business.... If you don't like working there in this position Anna, it's time to let someone else do it... Everyone else that answers the callers requests are friendly, polite and professional....

I don't know what are they doing there but my 12 months old baby had a referral 3 weeks ago because of really bad ongoing cough and still didn't hear from them. I called the hospital and asked and the receptionist said "doctor checks the referrals and decides whenever to see the patient". It's unbelievable. Very unprofessional. I will get referral to other hospital but l already waited very long and put my baby on risk because of them. If you have a chance never get referral for this hospital. Most of the people had bad experience anyway. And the good ones are probably fake accounts.

Very modern first class hospital. They have an emergency room that is very large and capable. Their ICU is amazing. I know that they are the very best when it comes to spinal damage patients, as well as liver transplants. The best in the state of Victoria for both. A very large roster of medical specialists work at this hospital every single day. I would trust this place with my life. It is right across the road from Heidelberg train station. They do have underground secure parking. It’s expensive. But most hospital car parks are. There is free parking at Heidelberg train station though. The food court inside is lovely. They serve a nice variety of fresh food. There are signs everywhere so you can easily find where you need to go. My sister has received cancer treatment here. Specifically a bone marrow transplant. The nursing staff were absolutely amazing. Very understanding and compassionate considering she had to spend over a month in isolation there. The down side to this place is that it’s not in a safe area. The area immediately around the hospital is safe. But walk a minute or two away and it’s a high crime area. So if you go for a walk, especially at night, be careful.

I went in there to get a blood clot sorted in my leg so I couldn't walk. I was met at the door by a really nice guy who let me lean on him so I could get inside. As I was at the front desk talking to the lady, he swiftly went and found a wheelchair and wheeled me in to the waiting room. I was then wheeled again by a lovely lady to another room on level 2 and then wheeled again to a smaller room. I did have to wait a bit but that's expected at hospitals so I was prepared for a wait. The kind nurse who saw me gave me some painkillers when I politely requested them and the doctors who saw me to assess me and take blood samples were beyond nice (one of the doctors who was floating in and out of the room seeing patients was humming to himself which made me a little more cheerier). The other doctor went and got me a sandwich when I mentioned I hadn't eaten much that day! So mega thank you for being so calm and patient and even though they all had masks on their faces, you could tell that they were still smiling. Major applause for all of you ??????

Most of staff are super nice and really care BUT the food is sooooooo terrible. I can't believe I have to eat it. Sometimes the nurses accuse me of doing things that I didn't do and makes me very angry. Overall, the experience is satisfactory.

Misdiagnosed severe tonsillitis as anxiety.... Too lazy to actually look at me properly and told me its all in my head. Somehow coughing up black and brown phlegm and having ruby red tonsils and swollen glands wasn't a give away..... How does this happen in 2021?

Came here by ambulance for my little one, we got admitted to ER and then to a room in the pediatric level. We stayed here for 3 nights and I can say they have the best staff from nurses, admin staff, doctors and specialists. All of them are so friendly, gone beyond their duties helping and comforting us during these tough times. We went across to mercy for women to have a brain ultrasound on our last day, and my little one was a little irritated so she was crying for 30 seconds before a lady in uniform (staff working there) told me to calm my 15 month old down because some others are trying to work. I found this insensitive, like we are there because we need something done, my little one had fever of 39.9 couple of days prior so she isn’t feeling well. I haven’t slept for days so I didn’t have the energy to argue with her. Very disappointed with mercy for women imaging and I am glad I didn’t come here for ultrasound when I was pregnant (and I will never go back here). Apart from that, I will stress again that Austin health has the best staff and big thank you to all.

Austin Pathology Department is indeed fortunate to have Michael, the Phlebotomist on their team. Michael was not only efficient and professional, but also calm and considered. This allowed me to feel safe and supported during the procedure this morning. Please pass on my thanks to Michael and Heather.

The nurse's were lovely, the doctor's there are rude and didn't Seem to really care about the patients they were treating. Keep in mind I'm talking about accident emergency department. I'm sure others departments would be a different experience.

Fantastic care for my uncle who has a cancer on his hand. He has dementia and the staff have been respectful and caring in providing his care. A special thanks to Donna the plastics liaison nurse who has gone out of her way to facilitate his care.

Some times this place is good. Other times it’s bad. But it’s tough being out in their shoes so I sympathise with them. Keep it up. The absolute backbone of Australia!

Came in by ambulance with suspected Gall Bladder problems. Emergency triaged me wrongly and put me in lowest priority, and sent me to sit in waiting room. Five hours later, after having not been given any pain medication despite being in severe pain, and not being seen by either a nurse or a doctor, I gave up and went home. All I can say is avoid the Austin if you can. If you can't well good luck.

I cut my finger at the park, cutting an apple for my kids pretty bad. All the nurses and doctors were fantastic, and I had surgery the next day to repair cut nerves and an artery. I remember looking around and counting eight doctors and nursery in the room before the operation, all for a cut finger definably felt like I got the gold star treatment. All this on a day with over 1400 covid cases.

Have been a patient at the Austin for nearly 26 years and always been treated with the utmost care and consideration. I have been to hospitals all across Australia but would always rate the Austin as the best for my treatment. From the pathology team to the ER staff and Liver transplant unit I cannot fault anyone. Thank you to the team at the Austin for always looking after me and my family when we are there.

The True colours of Australia: I checked in at the Austin Hospital on January, 1 2022 at 4.40 am in the morning. I had a nosebleed. The assistant Administrator, about 60 years old, and the nurse ( Blonde with ponytail) on duty were the most rough, rude and coarse, I have ever come across. These people do not look professional and inviting, towards customers in need. They did not talk to me with RESPECT: Help themselves out with my paperwork with no manners. I have complained and told her to ask permission, before opening others properties, or documents. She was an extremely coarse and aggressive ugly, fat assistant to the Administrator named Lynette: that is door get out, or I call the Police. Following the Blonde Nurse who did not have the name badge on her uniform: she called straight out for my first name and invited her to address me by title as Mrs. She did not care. She was also extremely verbally aggressive. She also said that is the door to get out, following the fat ugly assistant to the Administrator named Lynette, broke into the conversation in a menacing manner, stating that I was calling for help. She was extremely verbally abusive in a forcefull and coercive manner. Then following the other administration lady, she came close to me and looked through my paperwork without asking permission. Extremely, ruthless without manners. They were trying to persuade me not to see a doctor, the waiting was extremely long. I was laying down on the seat as I was in pain, I did not feel well as I have respiratory issues. I have communication with some of the specialists. Who suggested to return to emergency to same hospital, unfortunately for me considering that they had my medical history. I will never return to the emergency department at Austin, because of the negative environment and the menacing manners of these horrible people, and no customer service as well as empathy towards customers in need. These people should be banned and have their license suspended. They are not of any good to humanity in need. The doctors on the emergency ward, did not assist as much in following up or having examinations as well refer to see urgently, the specialist in regards to ear nose and throat and they do not want work, and not following with examinations, or assisting customers. On New Year's Eve, at Dinner the Doctor surgery is not Open at 1.00 in the morning, or the doctor does not come to the Crown!!? The Austin Emergency is to be shut down. The staff to be banned and their licence suspended for good.

Went to the neuroscience department for my daughters EEG, and all I can say is Connie is an absolute asset to that department. Friendly, helpful and goes beyond her call of duty. She made a very stressful experience and absolute joy. Also the nurse who preformed the EEG did a great job at keeping my stressed daughter calm and comfortable.

I have been an outpatient of Austin Health since 2019 but until Tuesday have not had to receive care in the Emergency Dept. then the Short Stay ward. Despite having to wait 4 hours to be seen by a doctor due to the business of the dept., once I was inside I was seen immediately and all the necessary tests were done to try and diagnose my medical condition I came in for and I was transferred to the short stay ward to stay till they were happy to send me home Wednesday. I am a retired Division 1 nurse so know what is expected of proper care and that is what I got from every person I had contact with. I will be continuing to have care at Austin Health and am confident that I will be looked after.

Been waiting for months for an appointment that they keep cancelling. Health has gotten worse to the point rch (who referred me) and my GP have said go to ED, as we have exhausted every option. I'm currently in ED, had to wait 4hrs just to get painkillers that they said they would get for me when we got here. Every time we ask a question, about meds/time/etc, we get a completely different answer. I'm in severe pain and it genuinely seems this hospital and all the staff couldn't care less. I'm crying in pain, not allowed to drink, so I'm getting severely dehydrated. What's the point of a hospital if they genuinely don't care. They only book appointments for the next 7 weeks, any longer and you get lost in the system. I'm genuinely looking at seeing if I can change to RMH or somewhere as this hospital is just making everything worse. It's not fair on patients at all.

Long waiting times in ED but standard of care is awesome. Dr Ali and the nursing team are amazing. They stopped and explained everything and had an actual conversation to put me at ease instead of rushing me out like cattle.

Bitter-sweet post I lost my dad today. He suffered from breathing problems and had been in icu 2 times before including a long 1 month stay and this being the third time in icu. Unfortunately his condition this time was extremely severe and he was also a lot older and he sadly passed away. But I want to thank the lung specialists and icu team for all the great job they did throughout his stays without which I wouldn't have spent that extra quality time with him last few years. Australia really is a lucky country.

Avoid at all costs. I was advised by my doctor to go emergency ASAP for suspected DVT a serious condition. Upon registering my self the nurse was really rude and said why would a doctor send you here we don’t do ultrasounds at night but it’s up to you if you want to stay and wait for a doctor. I was dumbfounded when he said that. A nurse who thinks they know more than a doctor ridiculous. I felt like I was not welcome in a public emergency department. Who are they to judge. Discrimination at its finest.

One of the patient transfer workers was very rude to me while i was in emergency. Rolling her eyes and laughing at me. She was blonde with piercings, the nurse referred to her as maddy i am assuming that is her name. I am an older woman, i do not deserve this type of disrespect from a young rude girl. I will be calling up to make a proper complaint tomorrow.

On September 22, 2023, I called at 4:33 pm regarding an appointment! They put me on hold for 57 minutes and in the end no one answered, but they disconnected me from the line exactly at 5:30 pm because they ended their working hours! !!! Shame on you, if you are short with workers, patients don't have to pay the price of your miserable work. You don't deserve a single star, I'm forced to put it in order to leave a comment.

Arrived in an ambulance with internal bleeding. Every staff member I encountered was terrific from the funny small orderly girl who took me around for tests to the nurses and finally doctor. Waited a while but yes it is a public hospital.

Nurses are the only ones that do anything. No beds.ihad 1 ct scan they see something bad starved me for 3 days asked for a second ct scan it would be a waist of money even if I wanted to pay for it. I ask if they could have made a mistake?? Not these guys apparently no chance!!!! I end up having major sergury for nothing thanks for the medical opinions clowns

I went into the emergency room. The nurse told me it would be $500 to get the treatment. I agreed, but the look in their eyes that I couldn't afford it. So I replied that I would go see the doctor tomorrow at the GP before returning to a young nurse named Great. Send me your health insurance card. Her eyes, her words were hostile and rude. What I have to face now It is unlikely that a hospital would have to treat a human being like this. I returned to the car and cried, very upset about what I had experienced. And while I'm typing this message right now, I'm still crying. I am Asian, I am human, we are only physically different. I want to let you know that if anyone were to encounter a situation like mine, how sorry you would be. You went in to ask for help but you received emotional abuse.

This is the best hospital (across Sydney and Melbourne) that I have been to by far. All of the staff I have interacted with during my stay were friendly, kind, caring, patient and attentive. I have never felt safer and more cared for by doctors and nurses; absolutely amazing services and support. Follow up care is also above and beyond any other hospital I've been to. I highly recommend this hospital for anyone who has access to it.

Was there in emergency department on Tues 20 February 2024 and the service was terrible. Staff couldn't do what they're paid to do. There was a line of patients stretching right to the door and entire waiting area was completely packed. People waiting hours even bringing pillows and blankets to keep warm as they were prepared to sleep in emergency department. No lie. I arrived at just before 5:00 pm and left at 1:00 am Wednesday 21 February after being transported by ambulance for a heart condition. Absolutely disgraceful health system in Victoria and our government keeps insisting they want more people in Victoria when hospitals cannot cope with the current population. Holy Jesus. Expect the situation to get worse and I don't expect it to get any better. There was elderly patients in their 80's to 90's kept waiting 6-7 hours as well as parents with their very young children and then a wide age range from people in their 20's to 60's and 70's. People sleeping on the floor. It was a complete shambles and a disaster. Like I said prepare to die or get much worse because our hospitals cannot cope. I'm not sure what's going on in hospitals but in this day and age staff should be performing a lot better. I think a lot of this is due to internal policies at the hospital and politics also. I surely shouldn't take this amount of time in a emergency department. Obviously the system is broken and the triage service stinks. Then more and more patients walking into the emergency department even before staff have attended to the people already waiting in line. Hospitals need to lift their game and get the job done straight away, immediately. No jerking around wasting time. Just get the job done. If you need more staff with shorter shifts do it NOW BEFORE PEOPLE DIE WAITING ON THE FLOOR OF YOUR EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT.Then these disgusting disgraceful hospitals need to have thug security guards to protect their absolutely inadequate staff that just won't do their jobs. I don't understand why these morons wanted to go train and study to be doctors and nurses but then won't do their jobs appropriately.

this has to be the absolutely worst hospital. The doctors here have no idea what they are doing, and i question whether half of them are even fully qualified. emergency on the quietest night i’ve ever seen, still waiting over 3 hours for a doctor to arrive, just for them to ask some questions take a photo and then say i need to check with another doctor… the medical system here has just gone completely down hill! over the past month i’ve experienced doctors mis-diagnose here and literally just not run appropriate tests instead just give drugs for pain management!! I honestly don’t know how this hospital is still even operating!
