They say first impressions count and I totally agree. I called to make an inquiry about an appointment and I was spoken to in the most disgusting manner by the receptionist! If you don't like your job and can't speak to people with politeness and respect, it's time to leave! I understand that you may be busy, but there's no excuse for your poor attitude! I'm hoping I have a better experience in the future with my child.

We are so blessed in Melbourne to have one of the best children’s hospitals in the world. All the staff, Doctors and nurses, are so caring, wise and professional, I could not have asked for better care for my son. Everyone has so much compassion, and lightheartedness, they really help to make it the best possible experience for both the children and the carers, out of what is usually, unfortunately, a very bad experience. Your well observed efforts are always appreciated and will never be forgotten. Update; have not had to go there for a while, but I still only hear good things about the Royal Children’s hospital, keep up the great work, parents in Melbourne love you.

From my personal experience I can say the staff can sometimes be rude, lacking compassion and empathy. Not all, but you may come across a guard, receptionist ,nurse or doctor like this on a reoccurring basis. These don't seem to be one off issues in which someone is just having a bad day etc. There are also many people who decide to just stay quiet as they don't want to report anything negative in relations to a staff member in fear of it potentially effecting treatment of their child. I personally think there is something wrong with the culture in this hospital. This results in a poor experience which overshadows and nullifies all the good work this hospital does. It means nothing if there is no consistency and a hospital lacking compassion is missing it's cornerstone. Decorations, fluff around the hospital and seeming to care is not the same as PEOPLE who really care for their patients. The staff at this hospital added additional stress and anxiety to an already existing amount we are dealing with. I called the hospital to provide feedback and I have left my details if anyone wishes to call back. Prior to this, I've always had positive experience here and have realised though, overall this place really isn't as good as I thought it was. It's quiet a shame that this is what it is.

Wait times over 4 or 5 hours. My kid was struggling to breathe and gasping but staff claimed there was nothing wrong with her. Needless to say we ended up leaving feeling like we were not taken seriously or listened to. We went to our GP and had follow up diagnostics (x-ray) and found she had severe bronchitis among other issues. The fact neither the nurses or doctor considered listening to me when I said I think it’s bronchitis or asthma (daughter also has severe allergies).... It’s understandable there’s staffing issues but that wasn’t the case when you just aren’t being listened to. Not sure if Ryan’s Rule applies in Victoria but it’s in Qld and should be brought into these situations or else suffer the consequences of medical negligence. Would go to any other hospital instead of here if you have an emergency. 4 people at the front making people wear masks but the second they’re in the hospital they have them off. Staff just chatting and doing nothing but telling you to sanitise hands and wear a mask. Waste of staff that need to be used actually diagnosing and treating. Absolute joke of a system.

I came many times to this Hospital but this time is the worst and headache. First I couldn’t find parking spaces and second a long line for registration and next we went to the x-ray section their was crowded that keep us waited for almost an hour. And after this I go a ticket 🎟 for child at 10:300am to see the doctor until 1:30pm. I asked from the Clinic A1 again that why our turn is not coming. She check the computer that our number wasn’t sent to doctors. She printed another ticket to see a doctor. We arrived at 9:30 am and now it is 3:00 pm. Still we are waiting to meet doctor. It is really really headache and worse and waste of time. Unbelievable

I’ve read all these reviews and the only response they seem to provide is “When a patient comes through Emergency they are assessed based on the urgency of their condition. The most seriously injured or sickest children are seen first. This means the wait can be anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. No-one's treatment can be rushed, so we ask you to please be patient.” Why not provide an actual response to people expressing concerns? Yes, I get it’s based on emergency status, but parents are clearly coming here for answers and you’re not providing them. You’re a CHILDRENS HOSPITAL, and expecting children, babies and parents to wait for hours on end is absurd. I took my 10 month old on Saturday night who was suffering from covid. I’ve never had to take my children to emergency so to say it was a scary experience is putting it mild. I thought it would be supportive and reassuring. My baby had a fever of 39.7, a very high heart rate and started to get the shakes on arrival. The nurse told me that I would have to wait in a private room as we both tested positive for covid, for the doctor. I asked if they knew roughly how long as it was 11pm at night and my baby hadn’t slept for hours and was very sick. She said that at the moment it’s up to a 5 hour wait. I’m sorry, BUT a 5 hour wait for an exhausted 10 month old, struggling to breathe, high fever, high heart rate, scared mother?? Unacceptable. I was left alone in a room for 2 + hours until I had to press to buzzer and ask for them to check my baby as no one had come back. I eventually discharged myself by 2am as my son was overwhelmed and clearly no one cared to update me on what was going on. I understand the hospital system is under pressure, we all understand that after the last few years, but that is a joke. Where is the care for the sick children? The concern for the worried parents? It’s a broken system that needs to be fixed.

We went to the hospital emergency twice now and once they were quick to assess rashes for my daughter and second time was last night. We started wait time at about 9:25 pm to 9:30. Went there Cz my daughter was vomiting and not keep food or drinks inside her. Triage system is super confusing as the nurse didn’t bother to check her fever. How can you assess half way and you are not doctor and how do know she is less sick from others. We left from there at 3:45 am after more than 6 hours wait only to be told that still 5 more kids ahead of you and any other priority kid will be seen ahead of you too. If I went there with my sick child, will you punish me by extending my wait time just because one person thinks my daughter is not looking dehydrated. One nurse came to us after my daughter vomited her food and drink there too which has been happening from 3 days now. She gave her anti nausea. I said why you didn’t give it her before as vomit is the main reason why are there before. She said she didn’t get time before. You didn’t get time in 6 hours. They just keep scaring you by saying the person who has waited same as you has been here more than 6 hours. We did the same but no one saw us and we decide to leave because indirectly your staff keeps saying that other kids are ahead in category system. You have called so many kids who were coughing and vomiting before us and they were also looking fine and crying with Tears. You guys just wait for people to leave on their own so you don’t have to see them and next time they won’t visit you. I am not visiting there again, see you succeed in your mission of not helping children who are less priority.

I’m so astounded by these “self-entitled” reviews. Here you have a world-class hospital with the best doctors and amazing staff providing leading health care FOR FREE. Where in the world do you get that? Try the USA? You’ll need to get a second mortgage. This is one of the best hospitals in the world that took such great care of my daughter when she was there. Thank you.

My experience was awful since so many seriously ill children patients had to wait for hours before a doctor could visit them in the hospital emergency room! Every 20 minutes, my toddler would throw up, and she was really sick. The nurse told us it would take five hours to see a doctor when my spouse was also ill. That evening was awful! Is there really just one physician for such a large city? Where do our taxes go?

2nd encounter at RCH. Professional Doctors and Nurses. The best children's hospital in Australia.

The quality of post surgical care here is very low: meds given, obs charted and not much more. Parents left to do toileting, showering etc (even on older teens). Basic nursing skills simply not being met. Feel like a number being pushed through the system. The idea of holistic care is completely lost on most of the staff here.

I cannot express enough gratitude to the Royal Children's Hospital for the exceptional care they provided to my sons. During our nearly 3-week stay, the nurses and doctors went above and beyond to ensure our comfort and well-being, and their warmth and kindness were truly appreciated. Though there were a few delays with our procedure, the understanding and compassion shown by the hospital staff were remarkable. We fully comprehend that there are more critical cases that demand immediate attention, and the hospital's dedication to prioritizing those cases reaffirmed our trust in their expertise and commitment to patient care. Overall, our experience at the Royal Children's Hospital was incredibly positive, and we are very happy with the care our sons received. The staff's welcoming nature and the level of attention they provided to our family made a significant difference during a challenging time. Thank you to the entire team at the Royal Children's Hospital for their outstanding efforts and commitment to providing excellent medical care. We would highly recommend this hospital to anyone in need of specialized pediatric care.

Very poor managed service. The staff dont know wat they are doing. I was there for replacement of NJ feeding and they refuse call the on call floroscopy person. Instead they offer stay over the weekend and food through intravenous saline. Which is absurd. In other words whole family has to suffer and baby get traumatised just to save money to call on call specialist. Victorian dont have any other choice otherwise i fully recommend dont go to this place

Overall, I'm happy with the hospital. Wait time is ridiculously long (like years of waiting long) and sometimes it shouldn't be. What i have realized as going to the hospital for many long years now is that they priorities the wrong kids, even tho ALL kids are important. The staff are so lovely and kind, they surprisingly answer phone calls fairly quickly then alot of other places. The way they follow COVID restrictions and engage with kids is really good. The hospital facilities are really kid friendly, the shops are heavily over priced but nice to walk around if you have young kids. There's cafes, restaurants, really cute wall art that makes kids forget all their problems and huge artifacts and statues, its honestly a really nice environment for kids to be around considering all the issues and health problems they go through. Personally, i did dermatology laser, and the receptionist is so sweet and I always book with the same guy, he is so lovely and so sweet and comfortable to be around, compared to other doctors i have been booked with previously. I see huge change in my face thanks to him.

Last week I had a scare and had to rush to ED@Royal Childrens as my 20 month old daughter was not feeling well. Turns out that she had two infections in her tummy. Since then she’s been on 3 day and a 10 day antibiotic course. The service that I received from Royal Childrens Hospital in Melbourne is excellent. Dr. Kathrine Chen and the staff were friendly and ensured that I am properly informed about my child’s health and care. I would have no qualms in recommending them to family and friends, especially Dr KC. Once my daughter was discharged we had a follow up video discussion two days later. Dr Chen explained everything in a very clear and easy to understand manner after asking some questions and taking a look at our daughter. I am relieved that my daughter is on the mend now.

We’ve had two emergency room visits here. Both times the nurses were so efficient at triage and we felt taken care of and listened to. The doctors and surgeons we worked with here had incredible bedside manner and followed up with us in the following days. Thank you!!

If ever a place deserves five stars the Royal Children's does. The staff we've met have been almost invariably caring, empathic, and enormously competent. We've had some long waits to be seen, but that's more a function of poor funding and staff shortages. Glad to have you nearby, and thank you to all of you there.

Our first time there. I don't know what emergency is like but my special needs son had a scheduled minor surgery there and I am impressed and grateful at the level of preparation both prior to and after arrival to help my son feel comfortable. It made a huge difference to my son's anxiety. The whole process ran smoothly like a well oiled machine. I have never with any of my 4 children, experienced this level of care and detail for a child from hospital staff. In the past at other facilities my son has sometimes been deemed as too hard, as he is non verbal and cannot express what he is feeling. We were blown away with the empathy and understanding of RCH staff. From the admissions nurse to the anaesthetisist to the surgeon and so many others who constantly gathered around to help. Amazing. Thank you!

I gave 3 star because there are some doctors and Nurse very helpful and responsible. I gave only 3 star because the doctor asked a child with icy body to eat and drink cold stuff. I felt wrong, went home on the second day, used a hair dryer warmed my child to sweat then the high fever's gone! Can you imagine such reputable hospital's doctor was shaking his hands and body, sweating on his head while doing a blood test for my kid, when he took out the needle, the blood was shooting out! I was upset and asked for professional doctor to come then the senior doctor did a nice job. Parents when you meet this guy ask him to leave, please do not let your children suffer from him.

waiting in the emergency with a fractured hand for hours.....and hours..... and more hours!!!!! Update to reply on hospital's reply: Thank you for your reply, waiting 5-6 hours to get ANY kind of service (especially medical one) is NOT OK, there is something seriously wrong with the health care system in this country and needs immediate resolution! I have changed my rating to 3 stars just because hospital staff were amazing (esepcially Amy) and its not their fault that we had to wait this long, its the health care system's...

A great hospital, but for inpatients and their parents, if staying with their child, the constant beeping of alarms during the night makes sleep virtually impossible. How can those kids recover when they are not allowed to sleep by those alarms? I've given it five stars because of the wonderful staff, but for the constant racket during the night I would give it NO stars. If you are going to stay the night, buy a packet of earplugs to keep your sanity.

This is the second worst hospital in Victoria. They like discharging children as quickly as possible. My daughter has special needs. The hospital rushed her out the door as soon as possible. Since then, we go to the Monash Children's Hospital where they take better care of her. I will no longer donate to the Good Friday Appeal.

I got bad experience with Dr. Peter in emergency service late afternoon today for checking my son up on his infected circumcision. Everything was all good until Dr.Peter called 2 patients come in at the same time, and he started doing with the other boy first while he told us to go to the next bed without cover. I was waiting, waiting...and then I had to tell my husband come to replace me because he said only one parent there. When i was waiting there, he passed me many times just looking even ignore us. After he served the patient who came the same time with us, he just went straight to another one that had come behind us. We was waiting more than half an hour and i was quite upset so I left. Dr. Peter came after that and asked my husband why we changed the parent??? So my husband explained due to he said only one parent could stay with my son. I see my husband was unhappy with the way dr. Peter checking up my son very quickly too, and only said 'it will be healed' and then when my husband asked doctor certificate for his working night shift, dr.Peter left without saying nothing, my husband thought dr.Peter would come back, so he kept staying there waiting for the doctor coming back but no sign. He went to ask the nurse and she said the doctor disincharged us??? Whats going on with dr. Peter? He left us without saying like we finished, done!!! Luckily, after my husband told her the case, she took over and helped our situation out. We were shocked the way the doctor like dr.Peter acted...there are some questions i was concerned: 1. Why did dr.Peter call two patients in the same time if he couldn't handle them well? 2. The way of dr.Peter doing made us feel like racism because after he read the name and he saw us, he started ignoring us, even saying no word? 3. His job as the doctor is to serve and help patients, we do not expect him to treat us too kind but at least be polite and please let us know if he could not do it. This is the first time i have been to Royal Children Hospital and I am so disppointed after seeing dr. Peter😣😣 I just hope your hospital will solve some problems like that and make patients feel better🙂

World class facilities, super friendly staff. Always clean and tidy and sophisticated looking. Fun for kids, as should be. A bit too harsh on visitor restrictions. I feel there should be some leniency based on individual circumstances. Quite a bit of wait time sometimes despite having an appointment. The doctors don’t usually provide timely updates on care, to parent, if the child is in out of home care. Parents need to have all prompt information reg their child’s health irrespective of whose care they are in.

Unfortunately they did a terrible job on my daughter of 22 months forehead cut. After waiting for 4 hours they glued her cut without giving me any other options or considering that glue in forehead, an area with a lot of tension, is not recommended from an aesthetic point of view. They also glued her after 3 hours they applied the numb cream that did not have any more effect. The doctor did not glue her cut properly and as soon we got home it was already open. The skin edges were not put close together and the doctor glued her very quickly and not carefully. Now she has a very bad dented scar that will need revision from a surgeon when she is older. Very unhappy with the results and the treatment we got. I do understand they very busy with more important situations but still they did not care at all of my daughter face.

We are thankful for RCH for saving my son’s life and provided him great care at NICU late last year. However, RCH has disappointed us big time about a month ago. We were being kept in ED for over 24hrs, all we did was waiting. Finally got a ward, and again more waiting to a point that caused distress and trauma to both parents and baby. No day light, no fresh air and no one came to clean the floor/bathroom during the stay. Had to keep asking about test results and no one ever knew anything when asked. I won’t go too deep into details but how we were treated was inhumane. And don’t bother to make a complaint because nobody cares and no resolution will be given. Shame on you for how you guys handle situations and complaints, the system is absolutely broken. Do better if you really care about children and families.

We was so grateful! My family lost a life but we feel like we owed the whole team a life!

Subject: Heartfelt Concerns Regarding Recent Experience at Sugar Glider Ward Dear Hospital Management, I am writing to share my deeply disheartening experience during my newborn triplets' stay at the Sugar Glider ward. The lack of empathy, understanding, and support from the Head of Nurse Incharge and Manager staff has left me feeling distressed and emotionally drained. I implore you to thoroughly investigate these matters and take the necessary steps to rectify the situation. As a parent of newborn triplets, vulnerability defines our situation, and the compassionate care I anticipated was sorely lacking. I hope for improvements in the future, ensuring that no other family has to endure such distressing treatment during their time at your hospital. Sincerely, Riya

Came here at 10.30 pm as my daughter was suffering from high fever 39.5 It is 7.38 AM and we are still waiting to be seen by a doctor. This hospital is seriously understaffed in terms of emergency doctors. Please be mindful before you plan to come here. The average wait time per my experience is 7-8 hrs. 1 star is too much I would have opted for .001 if that could be a possibility.

My daughter has hydrocephalus and needed a revision surgery for her shunt today. We got Dr Wirginia maixner as the surgeon for the first time. Previous we have had Dr Juliet Clayton, twice doing my daughters surgery on different occasions all within less than a year. Both are amazing surgeons but if i had a choice to pick on next time, id go with Juliet over and over again. The surgery all went well with both surgeons, as i said they are both amazing but Dr Wirginia just lost my vote because of the way she shaves off half my daughters head im places that are un necessary, which i have lived proof of as Dr Juliet leaves all the hair she possibly can and just shaves off the minimal necessary incision site a tiny horse shoe shape, leaves all the hair around every part of the incision. Im all just grateful that my daughter is alive and healthy but just thought id share this as it still made me sad my daughters beautiful hair gone like that, only because i was expecting it to be like Juliet where her hair wasnt all gone, so just a bit of shock, but thats all. Hopeful that the hospital can give this feedback to Dr Wirginia, should I happen to get her again for my daughter (god forbid she needs another surgery) but if she did i like Juliets technique and also more for when my daughter is older (if she needs a revision at an age she is more aware, again god forbid) she too will feel better if she doesnt have whole chunks of hair shaves off and hopefully others can too learn from Juliets amazing technique, i would love to see all surgeons do the same. Seeing all my daughters hair after a surgery like that shows Juliet does not rush and takes her time and cares about my daughter too and doesnt treat her as another number, but id like to thank both surgeons once again! Thanks for keeping my daughter healthy and saving her 🙏 This is not a complaint and im not mad, was just shocked at first but its feedback that i hope makes a difference 😊im sure other mothers can relate 🙏

Disappointed, 3 yr old daughter presented with what we believed to be croup. Waited 6 hours and left alone in a bed without any indication of when we would be seen. In the end we left without treatment. Went to Epworth Richmond the next day and was seen within 30 minutes, diagnosed with croup and given oral steroids. Well worth the charge. No one should need to wait over 6 hours to be seen by a doctor.

I have had to wait many hours to be accepted into (for a start) the observation area, but I understand the shortages faced. The staff (every one of them) is so kind and nice making days better in hospital. Keep up the work fellow RCH staff!

We are so blessed in Melbourne to have one of the best children’s hospitals in the world. All the staff, Doctors and nurses, are so caring, wise and professional, I could not have asked for better care for my son.

Whilst I can't fault the care they had with my child, I will complain about the lack of understanding they had for my situation. I also don't take kindly to being told my child is autistic when in fact he is shy. No one knows there child like a mother does, such a pity I wasn't listened to and made to feel awful. I fully understand the pressure staff are under, but I can assure you, almost losing my child is far worse. Disappointed in the last nurse that attended to my child is an understatement.

Have had my son admitted to the Koala Ward through ED twice now. The effort, compassion, and care from all staff is brilliant esp when needed through such crucial and vulnerable situations for children. It really takes a special type people to do what they do here.

My son had a leg injury on last Sunday afternoon. I was grateful for all the prompt and professional services provided by all the medical staff from emergency department to the possum ward. I won’t remember all the names and some could be a misspelling, but Dr Jim helped us with preliminary assessment, the formal doctor in the x-ray identified the needs of the trolley for movement immediately, nurse Michael in emergency, nurse Amanda, Ella and Kristy in the possum award, anaesthetic specialist Toby. You are all so wonderful and made the process as smooth and stress free as possible. Our special thanks for our surgeon Dr Ben Mwaura, you came to see us at 10.30pm after you obtained the CT results. You patiently explained the situation to us and skilfully managed our anxiety. You had a full day operations the next day including my son’s and yet came to assure him the operation was successful. You looked so tired but you know your personal assurance meant a lot to us! We probably won’t see you all in our follow up visits but our gratitudes towards each of you are beyond words. Many many thanks!

Our son badly split his head open on Sunday night. We were seen to immediately, triage, and were waiting to see a doctor, who then told us quite quickly that it was a case that needed to be escalated to plastics. The surgeon came in and explained the situation, and we got to go home and return the next day. Some may feel this is disappointing because it wasn’t fixed on the night, however, given the severity of other cases, we were very happy to go home, sleep in our bed, and then return the following day. Our duration at the hospital on both visits were less than four hours in and out. Our son’s scar, albeit 4.5cm long, is seamless and will heal beautifully. Thank you to all the emergency staff!

Staff where great but got handballed around a lot which was confusing and frustrating and made the process take longer. I went to the gender clinic and after disclosing my Dissociative Identity Disorder to staff was told I “cannot consent” to taking Hormone Replacement Therapy because of my mental illness, which is not only ableist, outdated and untrue, I had talked to my alters about HRT and we all agreed on it and was literally at the point where I was about to get on T and then i mentioned the DID and got my consent forms revoked because it was “too complex” and then I left the clinic with no referral to any other meaningful help when I aged out. People with DID can consent to things, I’m still flabbergasted by this. Otherwise the shops and aura made it feel less like a hospital which was really helpful as someone with medical trauma and the staff where generally understanding, especially since I’m autistic and prone to verbal shutdowns especially in scary environments but it sucks I can no longer go here. The pain clinic also basically told me “sorry we can’t give you meds for your debilitating illness that leaves you bedridden most days and feels like being stabbed all over, try some stretches and excessive and mental positivity” which was baloney.

I was at the emergency with my child today and we saw Dr Kae. He was very knowledgeable. He put me at ease with the concern I was having. I was very worried coming in and waiting long but the 2 hour wait went very quick. I was offered something to drink from a volunteer and when my child’s name was called, the nurse even helped me pushed my pram for me. I’m very happy with my first time experience at RCH today.

No words can describe the appreciation I have for this hospital and it's staff! All I can say is that it makes me proud of being a Melbournian with what is being achieved here for our children. A big shout out for Dr Jason from emergency; Hannah, Ashley, Jess and Chelsea from the Platypus ward - You are all STARS!

Don’t understand how you could leave a 9 year old in their own watery/feces overnight with the nurse being well aware and leaving the child in that state until the next morning 8-10 hours later. Basic form of care was not meet at all.

The facilities and staff make hospital stays for children and their families a little less painful. The fish are amazing, as are the Starlight Captains and the express family room. The staff are excellent and patient care is at the forefront of everything they do. I hope a portion of the parking fees go to the hospital as they can be very expensive!

Disappointed! Day 1 - 3 under qualified staff members at emergency tried over 10 time to put a needle on my 2 years old sun's arm for dripping. It took one hour and my son was screaming due to a huge pain. We then had been put into a short stay room with no food supply for this night. Day 2 - Dripping needle came off. We have been told this need to be done again. After done the needle the nurse did not even give us a bandage to press my son's arm. My son was bleeding and screaming. My son was so terrified to see any nurse come to our room. And this needle constantly has problem so the dripping machine alarmed all night. No one could get a rest. Day 3 - After 3 days treatment with dripping and oral antibiotic, my son was still suffering from fever, cough, runny nose and muscle pain. We then have been transferred into long-term room. But still no one care about the parents. No food supply. After a super long day. Needle just came off at night time. We have been told this needle need to be done again. 3 days 3 times. This is so beyond a joke. Day 4 - Buffet for everyone at hospital on holiday. My wife with my son had been told not able to leave the nurse room. One nurse at nurse lied in front of my wife said there was no volunteer on the day could help to bring some food to her. There were plenty of volunteers on the day and they were there to give a help hand. I have been told to leave my sick son and exhausted and vulnerable wife at night time. New policy to us :" only one of the parents could stay over nights. My wife then had to hold my son and pulled the dripping machine into the toilet with her every time when she needed. Day 5 - My wife and my son has been informed suddenly to leave hospital because doctor thought my son was well enough to leave. They cannot wait till I finish work and come pick them up. My wife has been told the nurse room need to be clean up immediately in case other patients need it. And there were many empty nurse room. Come on, we are not blind. My wife cannot hold my son and bags of luggage at same time. After begging the nurse again and again, my wife finally had been allowed to leave luggage behind and took my son to home immediately.

6 hour wait at emergency, no care, no treatment of 8 months old baby with breathing issues. Foreigners pay immediately before any treatment and can’t leave to go to another doctor to get actual treatment as insurance has already been claimed. Hostage situation and very poor experience. Hi RCH, As I can’t comment on your reply to my review, here’s my response in the original message. I’m well aware of how an emergency room functions, and that you categorise your patients into an urgency hierarchy. That’s is totally fair and as it should be! What is not fair is that you take our cash payment in the door, and then not tend to us or discharge us. Clearly, you didn’t feel this was an emergency. Or enough of an emergency? You could have simply told us that, and sent us to a GP in the morning, but you didn’t. I suspect it comes down to money or nationality... Seemed like the only two patients you made wait for +7 hours was the non Australians/non Medicare customers. We went to you, on doctors orders, after a 4 day, intensive, emergency hospitalisation in Thailand. The Thailand hospital told us that did the breathing of the baby worsen in Australia, we should take him to emergency with you. We didn’t want to take room up for other patients- we simply wanted your opinion and if that opinion was to discharge us because of it being a “non emergency” that would have been great. Instead, you let us sit with an 8 month old in a room full of kids vomiting, feverish, well aware that he’d been to Thailand and might be infectious. When finally in consultation, you’re nurses and doctors covered themselves up to not be contagious - where was that concern in the 7 hours wait? In conclusion, I understand you need to tend to patients in emergency. I simply ask that you review and discharge the ones that doesn’t.

  • 3/5 Dee R. 4 years ago on Google
The staff and facilities are 1st rate however my only complaints are that there appears to be alot of red tape if you see multiple specialities and also no quick way to see where on the waitlist you are. The phone queue is extremely long sometimes and the information you get depends on the operator. This is very frustrating. So we saw Dermatology (waitlist 1) at RCH who agreed with the GP and pathology that my daughters grade 2 skin tumour must be removed and they referred us to plastics. I thought we would be put on a waitlist for surgery, but it turns out the waitlist is for a consultation with Plastics (waitlist 2). Why so many consultations and waitlists? After the plastics consultation, she will go on another waitlist for the surgery (waitlist 3). Thats 3 waitlists for a condition that was already diagnosed before we got to the RCH. We should've just gone on 1 waitlist. Too much shuffling around between departments.

Entered the Emergency Department at 10:15pm on 21/08/2019 and it’s 4am now. Still waiting to be seen by the paediatrician. I had my 6 month old having reflux issue and in last 4 weeks he started vomiting with blood. I went to Werribee Mercy where he was born, they don’t have any answers. Got referred to sunshine hospital same they prescribed some medicine but situation got worst over the time. At the moment there is 2 weeks wait before I can see a paediatrician or a Specialist. After speaking to the specialist over the phone, he advised me RMCH is the best place for getting diagnosed as they unable to perform any tests. It seems like I have come on wrong night. It’s not weekend, nor public holiday or a long weekend. I have known the health system of this country which is best for only who have private health cover. I wonder if that is the way go forward than government should give me option of either Medicare or Private health. No wonder they have lot of kids coming overnight as night parking rate is flat of $8 (enter after 4pm and exit before 8am). A heads up to all parents, it’s better off to go to any hospital emergency Department during weekdays and business hours otherwise you wait longer and it takes toll on your individual health. Majority of the ED staff are Interns doing late evenings and overnights and they wait for their seniors before they can start the actual treatment. I have different perception about Royal Melbourne but sorry to say that it’s very disappointing:(. I would have given 1 or 2 star but I kept it to 3 as I know it’s difficult profession to be in.

The RCH is an incredible resource and we feel very privileged to have access to such world-class care. All of the doctors and nurses we encountered were caring, committed and very good at what they do - caring for small children with compassion. Our daughter has a very challenging condition and was losing her ability to walk. We now have hope that she will walk again and retain her mobility for many years to come. Life changing. Thank you RCH and especially the staff in Orthopaedics and the Platypus Ward for all your care and patience, it means the world to our family.

I have left feedback form and haven’t heard back. Was promised a play therapist prior to operation due to severe anxiety. This was not delivered. The nursing staff are AMAZING and deserve a 5 star ⭐️ and a pay rise. Orthopaedic team need to LEARN how to communicate appropriately with their little patients and parents. They have the worst bedside manor and truly need to take feedback on board. They were rushed, they didn’t allow me to ask all the questions I needed to ask because they were rushing me. No review post operative to let me know how things went and what they found- they left a sentence for a nurse to tell me without being able to answer my concerns. Until the next day. Which again they were rushed and did not go into detail. Physio was fantastic! Super great with kids and was just lovely to deal with from the get go. OT also very helpful! The Hospital system of dealing with Covid screening is PATHETIC. ZERO STAR. How is it that prior to going into theatre only the child has to be COVID tested but the parent going to stay the night with them doesn’t? Whilst my child was in theatre I was told I could leave and come back- DURING this time I could have easily contracted Covid from ANYWHERE! I stayed within the hospital but thousands of people walking in and out of the hospital. Non of which are “tested” or have a negative test result. Just based on their answers which could easily be falsified. Of course a few days later massive outbreak at the hospital. THIS IS WHY!!!! The response by the RCH is again displaying their complete administrative incompetence. Why did I fill out a feedback form requesting for someone to get back to me and wasting my time following THEIR PROCEDURE then I am told to email them directly again re explaining the complaint for someone to get back to me. DO YOUR JOB.

had an absolute nightmare experience here as a parent of a very little baby. we were advised to come here because our 2 month old had sustained a small bruise, we thought okay they're going to do some tests and we can find out what the problem is. while the tests were being done, we were treated like absolute monsters and like we beat our child. the staff were gaslighty and rude to us, and never once explained what tests were being done and what they were for. we were scared, worried for our child's health and constantly being accused and guilted the whole time. we had no clue what was going on or what they were doing with our child, they would just whisk him away. we were there for 2 days, and not ONE staff member asked us if we were alright or if we needed anything, despite us sitting there weeping in front of them because we were so worried. until the last night we were there when one of the student night nurses in sugar glider, came in and was just super kind to me. she asked if I needed anything and we had a little laugh. I unfortunately cannot remember her name, but they should employ more kind people like her because she made my entire day. when we came back the time after, one of the doctors told us that they should have been explaining each test to us! I gave 2 stars because they were good with my child. I hope they realize that if parents are staying in their establishment too, that they should be treating them well too and not leaving them in the dark wondering if their child is alright

Unfortunately, this hospital didn’t have that warm, welcoming, nurturing vibe that I anticipated, and some of the staff contribute to that. I didn’t feel welcome upon entry when an older staff member spoke condescendingly to the young paramedics I was with, who were lovely- she told us to wait outside, and that ‘it’s been like this for two years’. It was our first time going to the hospital, and we went inside because nobody there was acknowledging us. I was also either left to wait, or ignored- and some of the staff were unapproachable, or just didn’t go out of their way to help. Having said this, Dr. Ben was reassuring, and nurses Remi and Nancy were pleasant to talk to. The best part however was being given the all clear to go home by Dr. Mo. It was my first interaction with him, yet it’s like the whole room lit up- he was so joyous and kind, which was much needed after a mainly disappointing experience. People like this give the place hope.

I really wanted to give a 4 star because the nurses are amazing but after waiting for 5 and hours outside emergency and it was 12:25 am I asked staff if I could use the bathroom she did not even bother to look at me or say yes just pointed I thought maybe she is just tired and had a long day . i walked in and the door was locked I asked if she could please help even if it's just her answering sorry I can't. Her answer was " it is was it is with facial expression that she is angry??? I am extremely disappointed with why would this amazing hospital put staff in such an important section where parents and everyone should be treated with manners, luckily the security guy had just come and helped the world I already suffering parents come in scared for their children and sometimes they live very far and unable to go back and forth the hospital should have a waiting area with bathrooms. This is not including how long we ended up waiting for one doctor to just see how serious the condition was please childrens health is no easy matter.

Over 16 months wait! What gives, this country needs an overhaul. Meanwhile I’m likely to lose my job waiting cause my child is not well enough to attend school! A child that sleeps 5hrs after school is not normal, a child that sleeps in class not normal, I guess it’s easier just to medicate a child and not bother getting to the crux of an issue. Appalling. A grand for a specialist is not an option either when your a solo parent. So stressful.

Nothing but good to say about the caring and hard-working emergency staff who saved our 8 month old baby's life. We were transferred from Bendigo very late at night because our baby had intussusception (blockage) of the bowel and he was at the late stages, in a very bad way, vomiting up his poo. They were run off their feet with a full waiting room of emergency patients but worked through the process as quickly as they could in the circumstances and he was treated and on the mend by 1 am. All the while we were treated so kindly and everything was explained to us as to what they were doing to our son. We were so impressed by the expertise of all the staff and can't thank them enough for their care of our baby.

I got asked to leave the hospital today. I only have one hand and I just wanted to pass on a card and flowers to the parents who had children with amputations recently. I got told by a blonde senior member of the hospital in front of a so-called security guard that had no uniform on that there is no place for me here. She said I am not going to let you play with these parents as if I was some sort of insane person. I didn’t know. Try and look for the parents. I bought three bunches of flowers three cards with my contact details. I came from the Sunshine Coast as soon as I saw the news. It is a shame that I got asked to leave immediately. I was trying to help. I am sorry. I am embarrassed that hospital even can treat someone like this. This is Australia. It’s 2023. Why do some people enjoy putting people down? From a hospital. It is so wrong.

my 2month old daughter was diagnosed with early stage of bronchiolitis today. The doctor we had was so sarcastic saying things like “you can spend all the money in the world but it still won’t help her” or “when you come up with a cure let me know so we can become billionaires tomorrow” I was expressing my concerns and advised him that he she needed oxygen as I was told by a GP. He suggested not giving it to her and to let “Mother Nature deal with it” I understand the tiredness the doctors go through but the sarcasm is definitely not needed nor is it appreciated.

Had the triage dr say she czn get up on a bed so shes fine. To then vietual ED tell us to go straight back as RCH should have done ultra sound and bloods. Ended up goinf back and the next triage Dr forcefully looked down my 9 year.old childs top and her breasts while asking if she was going through pubity! This is basically SA and should have serious consequences. Not okay. Parents were in the room and answered the question asked. We were there for suspected appendicitis! She has not gone through enough pubity for ovarian torsion to be considered.

I used to like this hospital but ever since my child experienced pain for almost 3 months, ER didn't do anything just useless. we went to the ER so many times day and night, my child had a lot of blood tests and ECG, and the nurses said you guys okay to go there nothing wrong with the patient, the nurses had been with us for ages and my child's pain level keeps going worse than before. With my child's pain, they said it could be from stress or anxiety, how stupid. I was so mad and shocked at their behaviour, my sick child didn't want to go to the hospital or ER because of the lack of knowledge and understanding. I want as a mother of a sick child to educate your nurses doctors and medical practitioners to make them how to be better doctors nurses and better hospitals, where theirs a lack of understanding and communication.

I am not filled with confidence when basic information such as birthdays are not recorded correctly and even worse this is not corrected when raised before and during appointments (reception indicated this happens all the time and indeed it has been an issue with BOTH of our children) and the information is then included on important formal medical documents (Action Plan for Anaphylaxis) for our child which are rendered invalid because of the incorrect information. When contacted later, the hospital refused to provide an amended document with correct information and instead advised us to visit a General Practitioner who, even when presented with the original hospital issued document, could not issue an amended document due to the original incorrect information on that document! When I called the hospital reception again, the call was transferred to an on-call doctor without any handover and I was berated by an obnoxious doctor for calling the hospital outside business hours (I called at 7:00pm, reception hours are 8:00am to 8:00pm) and then accused of calling an 'emergency internal switchboard' (I had called reception number indicated on the website) for such a trivial matter as an 'administration or transcription error' - granted, while I considered the matter urgent because my son was at risk of not being able to attend school due to not having a valid Action Plan for Anaphylaxis, I do not believe the matter was an emergency that warranted referral to an on-call doctor, however the decision to do so was made by hospital reception and not me!

The dentist (I forgot her name - she was of Asian descent) was so gentle and careful and considerate. She ensured dad wa...

😠 The worst hospital. My sister had been suffering from breathing problems and attended this hospital in the morning due to it getting worse over night. 9 hours later sitting by herself, the doctor discharged her while saying nothing is wrong with her while seeing her physical state and it was clear s...

I know it is promoted no rudeness to staff please respect, but have they ever though t...

The hospital is old and under resourced in terms of spaces and the number of available beds, but apparently upper management are doing th...

😠 Do not have your baby here. There are many other hospitals to choose your maternal care with, and I don't believe Box Hill Hospital as the right choice. I left feeling very uncared for and my stay there was quite a lot. Lots of drips not checked nor working correctly, no care while I was recovering...
