I was charged $140 to use the gym for two weeks! This is Virgin Active's "cooling off" period. The staff member I was dealing with, Nina, was deceitful saying that if I signed up by the end of the month I'd get 8 weeks half price and another 2 weeks free. I confirmed this in writing, but then on the day I went to sign up she told me that actually I couldn't get the 2 free weeks anymore. Disappointing, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt and paid my first two weeks ($36/week on a 12 month contract). I was assured there was a cooling off period in case I changed my mind. I ended up cancelling within this period, but on exit I was charged $35 for each time I went to the gym in that week and a half (also charged for a class I had booked but cancelled due to injury). So two weeks at Virgin Active cost $140. That's definitely not what I understood a "cooling off' period to be. Be warned: Read the T&Cs, even though they're jargony and not super clear. Staff could be clearer about the charges on sign up and include the "Guest Fee" amount in the T&Cs to prevent the shock I experienced today. I've never left a review, but this left me so upset and I felt people should have the information and know what they're getting into. It's a shame. I was hoping to rejoin at a later time, it is a mostly good gym (except for the showers - they're pretty gross), but I view the brand quite differently now. UPDATE: Since my bad experience at Virgin, I have discovered ClassPass! It's a great model where I can access classes at dozens of gyms all over Melbourne. I have discovered so many wonderful boutique gyms and tried dozens of classes from yoga to boxing to spin. Highly recommend trying ClassPass! They're completely transparent with their billing, and I know exactly what I'm being charged, when. Much better!

I’ve been a member of Virgin Active for more than six years, about half of these at the Bourke St gym. I’ve used various Virgin Active gyms overseas too. It’s a very big gym with lots of equipment. Having just returned from Sydney, where I used the Pitt St and Moore Park Virgin Active gyms extensively, I have to say the Bourke St gym is looking very, very tired and in need of an upgrade and some more maintenance. See my pic as a case in point. Damaged plaster on the gym floor only warrants a poor plaster job, left unfinished. No sanding, no painting. Men’s change rooms are not very nice or clean. Guys who use this gym and also swim in the pool seem to like to wander around the change rooms without towelling down, and drip water all over the floor, so you can “enjoy” the experience of having wet socks and clothes, if they happen to touch the floor. Not to mention the tiny insects that seem to occupy some of the shower stalls.

DO NOT sign up to this gym. I made a booking with one of their personal trainers and she did not even bother to show up. I waited for half an hour and in the end not only missed my lunch break but also didn’t exercise. In response I was told ‘there was a problem in the automated system’. Absolutely horrible service. It gets even worse. I Initially signed up for a student membership and was told all I need is my student ID, which I showed to a staff member and also sent via email. After a few days I got a call at 9pm from a staff member saying that they will raise my fees unless I supply 3 documents (!) from my university, these documents are official transcripts that I have to pay for. They offered no other solution so my only choice was to pay more. Complete fraud. Also note that they are renovating and that all genders have to share the same bathroom. They have a variety of machines and classes but it’s very busy most of the time. The showers have shampoo and soap, which is nice, but the changing rooms are really dirty. I’ve never seen a cleaner there. The facilities are only OK, and the way they treat their members is rude and shameful. I was mislead and asked to pay more than what I signed up for. I was offered no compensation for my time or for this horrible experience. Definitely not worth 46 dollars a week. Do yourself a favor and go to another gym. Plenty great ones around!

Experience at this club is pretty below average. Pool and sauna is always closed despite bookings allowed. Since after lockdown there has not been many group classes onboard and they have even increased their membership fee recently. Tell me how you would feel for the price value for money: 1) membership fee increased despite covid situation 2) customer service deteriorated - not professional and arrogant especially the customer service manager 3) one to five classes a week from over 100 classes pre lockdown 4) Les mills classes mostly reduced to zero 5) club only open for gym floor exercise 6) you need to book a space floor in order to use the gym - different protocols than collins club What disappoints me most is price increased and overall experience has deteriorated! And they have the cheek to speak about transparency, you trust them? Seriously consider these before joining because you may end up in long term contract and they make it difficult to exit after!

Staff are extremely rude and gossip at the front desk in front of customers. Some staff are completely educated on memberships. Showers are disgustingly dirty and smelly, seems there is a major drainage issue and at 8am (peak time) none of the water drains. If it wasn't for the Collins street up the road I wouldn't have joined the gym. Overall disatissfied!

Crowded. Spin/cycle classes are OK. Going through renovations for the next 6 weeks and it’s chaotic at best. Hold off on membership options until October if you’re looking to join this location. Collins St location is the cleaner and more organised sibling.

After 9 years at Virgin Active, loyal membership always paying my fees. I received no flexibility in service while dealing with covid and a pregnant wife. All they care about is keeping me in the system, and even though I made a mistake and explained the situation. There was no consideration for my circumstances and for any of my comments and most of all for my loyal business for many many years. This is a money making business only, please consider first supporting local loyal businesses before giving you money to this money hungry monster.

Very rude staff! On a Saturday evening only 5 mins pass the closing time I got out of shower and the female staff said put ur clothes on , you need to get out we are closed without letting me dry my hair!! Very poor attitude. Weekdays after work is over crowded and the female shower is smelly. It was impressive with the spa and swimming pool at the start but it went down hill from there, will cancel it after today’s incident.

Gym is nice. The worst experience I had was with their Customer representative “Angela” while requesting my membership cancellation as we were moving house. Initially she said the next fortnight payment cycle has already proceeded (4days in advance 🙄) so the account will be cancelled in the following fortnight with $300. However the money was still being deducted from my account unless I called back. Otherwise the services of this gym is nice. Hopefully they now take the cancellation fees and stop charging me. Coz I literally paid 2fortnights + $300 for them not having a branch in suburb and a rude CSR. Absolutely shameful. Will rather join another gym like Anytime Fitness and treated better.

I am a Fitness First platinum member and have been for 6 years and only signed up to Virgin Active for the Reformer classes after a CFL and ATFL ankle injury. However, Virgin Active Bourke St has become my main gym for both strength training and classes…everything about the Virgin Active is superior. - Staff are really friendly and helpful - Facilities are nice, bathrooms are always clean and well equipped - Bathroom supplies such as hand wash, body wash etc smell soooo good - An online system is used to view and book classes. They have never cancelled classes that have been scheduled to run. Nothing worse than rocking up to a cancelled class! - Classes are conducted very well. The classes actually have thought and are run by qualified trainers. - The class format changes based on days, trainer etc, no two days are the same. The only benefit of me holding the Fitness First membership now is to access multiple locations and the 24-7 availability. I really recommend any of Adam/Anne/Mahsa’s classes during the week or Jase’s reformer classes which are run on weekends 🔥🔥. They are the BEST. Reformer has improved my core strength and mobility significantly. If you work or live in the city, Virgin Active is the way to go

Poor attitude of the staffs in general. Especially the girls at the front, quite off putting if that the first thing one experience upon entering the venue. Not to mention the terrible smell/general cleanliness of the hall way to swimming pool, and well as the swimming suit water extractor itself. I've been a member with them for a year and half now, the only member's benefit I could recount is getting my fees increased twice since commencement. They didn't even provide explanation as to why the increase. Quite disappointing.

I was working out as a guest of my partner. Half way through, the receptionist comes and warns me that it is against club policy to advise others how to perform any exercises as I was showing my partner technique on some lifts. I suspect one of the trainers didn’t have the balls to tell me himself and got the poor girl to do it. I also find it hilarious that there were lots of other men showing each other how to bicep curl, shoulder press etc without so much of mention. Classic commercial gym!

I purchased the ‘once a weeker’ membership earlier this year, love the facilities - a really spacious and well-equipped gym. However, the customer service and knowledge of some of the staff is sub-par and disappointing for the cost, and while I was considering upgrading my membership, I now won’t be. I spoke to 3 different customer service members on different days, asking about casual entry prices for members on the once a weeker who want additional visits - only to get different answers each time. The first person said they simply didn’t know what the price was, and didn’t look into it. The next person I spoke to a week later said I could purchase a token on MyLocker for $20 for an additional casual gym pass. Unable to find this on MyLocker, I reached out via email to check this. The email reply from the virgin active agent stated that it’s $35 dollars for casual entry regardless of whether you’re a member. I replied checking if this was the case, as I was told different information, confirming that I am a member. It has been a week with no reply received to my enquiry follow up. Unfortunately I was considering upgrading to a full membership, but this experience has left me disappointed, so I will not be upgrading my membership.

Very good gym, with good equipment, space and amenities. Been to a lot of gyms both in CBD and suburbs this is by far the best equipped all round. For those people complaining about price it’s like comparing a hatchback with a SUV. You get what you pay for.

I was a founding member of this gym when they first opened, took a break and came back. Had put my account on hold as was going on hols then got COVID upon arrival which was quite bad. I emailed to ask to extend my hold as I was bed ridden and even included a doc cert. the reply was ‘sorry policy says can’t change cause you missed the cut off date’ - I was in a bad medical state and getting treatment was priority and I emailed as soon as I could explaining the situation. So they slugged me another $110 for a fortnight while I laid crook as. I replied and said well fine cancel my membership and refund my 2 wks pls. They failed to even acknowledge my cancellation request until I called up when I had the energy to do so. I was met with a sympathetic staff member who agreed the situation was a poor customer experience and she would speak to management about refund. She also promptly cancelled my membership- noting I had left PT sessions prepaid on the table - and I never heard back about my refund. Treat customers like this and you’ll get honest reviews as such. You could’ve made this right but you’ve taken a long time advocate and turned them into a detractor. Very poor form Virgin. Very poor form.

Great gym, one of the best if not the best gym franchise in Melbourne. However, it does need a renovation and rejig of equipment to better suit the space. I am sure there is a way to change the layout to incorporate more benches and squat racks

    ### If you like Virgin Active for your benefit just visit Virgin Active Collins street one time before your registration. They are same brand but they are being managed in different way. ### I have had membership of this gym for more than a year. There are few points that you should know before registration. 1- Virgin Active at Bourke street has old and dirty facilities ( shower cabs for example, they are dirty all the time, they have upgraded their gym equipment after Collins street branch was opened ), especially when you compare it with Virgin Active Collins Street. 2- The staff are really rude ( definitely not all of them ) if English isn’t your first language do not get surprised. 3- They do not show respect to your privacy: They record all out going call to their customers too without letting their customers know that. You will not hear message like this “ your call is being recorded” 4- They clean every where during business hours. So it is not strange in their opinion when you are using Jacuzzi, one staff come and clean area by high water pressure cleaner that makes lots of noise. 5- empty tissue boxes and things like that are natural here.

Very rude staff that have no respect for members. The only gym I have been to that doesn't care about the fitness or health of their members. EXTREMLY OVERPRICED - do yourself a favour and look at other gyms in the area. I was a member for a year and can say that there are better gyms in terms of facilities and cost in the area.

The gym itself is fine but the way they run it is terrible! I had surgery when I enquired to join and knew I was going to have more surgeries coming up and I specifically asked them about how it works when I need put my membership on hold for medical reasons because that is critical when committing to a membership. They said it would not be a problem and I can always put my membership on hold for any medical reasons without it coming out of my normal "freeze" allowance. Of course it was a lie to get me to join, because when I did have to put it on hold they used my freeze, then told me I cannot put it on hold anymore. After me protesting they contacted Management and said that is OK for one period, but when I needed to have another surgery, they refused to put it on hold again. They will be dishonest and say whatever they can to get you to join and then completely go back on that verbal agreement. It is disgraceful. It has been such a headache and caused so much stress when I was already recovering that I just paid the early termination fee to get out as I refuse to keep paying money to such a discriminatory and dishonest business. If you have any injuries, medical issues or disabilities, do yourself a favour and avoid this gym entirely.

While this gym would be considered expensive compared to other gyms, it is worth every dollar. Huge workout space. I have never had to wait to use a piece of equipment because there are multiple of every kind. Clean facilities, delightful staff, huge variety of classes (all included in your weekly fee). For me, the best part of this gym is the recovery/wet area. Swimming pool, sauna, spa and plunge pool (14°c) - this area prevents me from being sore from my workouts and the plunge pool has drastically helped my achey joints by minimising inflammation. If you're fortunate enough to be able to afford the $41/week - do it. You won't regret it.

Ridiculously overpriced, there are suburban gyms for less than half the price. Don't expect to be treated like a human either - as with most commercial gyms you're just a lead for their bonuses and passive income. I'd rather local businesses that actually invest in their clientele.

If not for the renovation, no one would have found there is no equality in this world, let alone Virgin Active! The management ignored all male members from not giving them shower conditioner in their bathrooms. Pool tiles were full of body fat, wall with holes didn't repair for a year since I joined. Place to hang your bath towers falling one by one and is not repair or replace, pool water feel oilly, every time finished swimming you feel a film covering your body.

Been a member for over a decade, noticing standards are slipping, particularly organising trainers/instructors to turn up for class. Not a great look, standing up 60 yoga hopefuls (two days in a row), or rooms of forlorn cyclists who wrapped themselves in Lycra to cycle in air-conditioned darkness. Happens a little too often for the finger to be pointed at the trainers.

Pathetic customer service. Each time you speak to someone they tell you something different based on who you are talking to. I have now called 3 times and visited the branch 2 times to get my refund processed because I cancelled my membership in the cooling off period but they had still gone ahead and charged me. Ridiculous. But I am soo glad I cancelled my membership. I hope this serves everyone reading as a warning to stay far away from them.

Too expensive for what it offers. I had a membership for a year and a half, so regular membership and then a flexi membership. after a year of regular membership I was supposed to automatically get a flexi membership for the same price but after a month or so they raised the price and a few months later they raised the price again! twice in 6 months. instead of preserving their loyal members they raise the price, its ridiculous. when I went to cancel my membership the girl offered no apology or explanation. the facilities: so you do have plenty of machines available, you have a really nice pool and its not too busy most of the time. the girls locker rooms are not very clean, bathrooms go out of order from time to time. there's a Jacuzzi but it is not very clean, each time I used it I could feel dirt on the floor. instructors: really chatty and sometimes loud. they are not available to help others, never approached me when I was training or offered any help. they only appear when they have a private session. If you are reading this and really want to improve I think you should start by explaining to your trainers that ppl pay EXTRA for this gym and they deserve more attention (even if they don't pay extra for PT). Another thing is facilities should be spotless. again, you are charging more then most gyms, then step up and give more to your clients. these are the major issues that I think bothered me and I think that for the money you are charging, should be handled. I would have kept my membership if you didn't raise it twice in 6 months, had cleaner and more accommodating facilities and if trainers were more engaging.

Checked out a few gyms around the area and a friend recommended Virgin Active, so I signed up for a free trial. Friendly staff members showed me around and got me started without much delay. The gym is very spacious but doesn’t appear that way from the outside. I went during the week of Christmas break, so not crowded at all, enjoyed my routine workouts. A very well equipped gym for all kinds of workout focuses. The equipments are well maintained.

Recently had an unpleasant experience that made me decide to cancel my membership. I jumped into the curved running machine just for a cardio workout while the grid class was starting at the same time, firstly, I had no idea that the machine was part of the class, and there was no sign or close barrier to obviously showing that I can't use the machine during that time. Surprisingly, there were 3 people of staff members and the instructor saw me doing the workout, but they did not tell me anything and just kept staring at me instead. 5 minutes ago, a super-friendly member came to talk to me with an attitude saying that I couldn't use the machine and I needed to leave, and then one of the keep-chatting 3 staff called 'Ian' came to tell me that I needed to leave now and close the barrier after that. Look how funny that was!! He should have told me UPFRONT or made a sign about that, not just let me do a wrong thing and tell me after. To be honest, I have nothing against the rule, but this is not fair for me as well, I almost had a fight with that grumpy old member and they told me to stop my HIIT workout immediately without giving me time to cool down or anything and that was not my fault! That incident ruined my whole experience at Virgin Active Bourke Street, luckily a lovely staff named 'Tom' came down to speak with me and apologise (on behalf of his unprofessional teammates). Hope this review helps anyone who wants to join here to consider for a bit, and for the team, please improve your club management and service. Horrible experience.

I booked myself a yoga class for 9 am yesterday via classpass. Upon reaching 10 minutes early, the receptionist took time to make me sign a form and confirm 5 times if I booked into collins street by any chance. Then I reached the class by 8:59 and by the time I removed my shoes and tried getting in, the yoga teacher had locked the door. There were literally 2 people in the class, but she said it was too late. I told her it’s 9am and she still didn’t let me enter. It was very unprofessional and frustrating. The receptionist was clueless about who was taking the yoga class and the door being shut. She was of no help basically. Don’t know who the teacher was, but she was very rude. The experience was really not great, specially when it was worth 12 credits!

I’m gonna say this is fabulous gym. From day 1 that I joined, very professional consult with Nermin to understand what I needed. Since then I’ve fully enjoyed the experience. The yoga instructors are awesome, whether you like Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Yin or Hatha yoga. The vibe in the workout areas is good and I’ve found when you arrive the staff are always friendly and welcoming.

Absolutely deplorable service. No support or empathy from reception when I tried to cancel my membership because of COVID. I do not recommend this gym to anybody. I had written to the club in June requesting a membership freeze till September, which according to comms I received from you was free, or cancel my membership if that was not possible. Instead of doing either of those things or giving me a call, you charged me full price for an additional fortnight. When I called your gym, I was told that some form was sent to me, which I did not receive, and despite my written instructions you did not act. On top of that you refused me a refund. The form was resent to me and I noticed aside from your own personal data collection questions, the personal info requested from me were the same that I provided in my original email instructions in June. The guy who answered the phone said 'we cant do this because we have 4000 customers and a lot of them want a refund' For such a high-end gym with such high prices, this is terrible service. Refusing someone refund after you charged them despite them notifying you that they want to cancel the service and then being told off my your staff is unacceptable.

Ive done bikram, fitness first, fernwood, pilates, yoga etc and this is the best place Ive ever used. Cool stuff: genuine big pool, big sauna, gorgeous spa area, ladies locker room has plenty of space, flattering lighting, GHD straighteners and hairdryers, shampoo/conditioner/body wash in each shower, heaps of lockers, theres endless classes, netflix etc on half the machines, lots of cardio equip, weight machines, never feels crowded. Its really honestly worth the money. They even have sleep pods. Its bloody awesome. Going in a few times a week for about 45 mins is incredibly helpful when you have a full time office job, and Vigorous Thai massage is across the road, you can grab neck and shoulder rub for like 20 bucks afterwards. Heaven. I noticed a couple of lukewarm reviews below regarding it looking tired or needing an upgrade. Im not sure what those folks are used to, I suppose Ive used lots suburban gyms and theyre pretty average. It really is a very nice feeling space. Try it out.

Virgin Active is a wonderful gym- I love both gyms and I've been a member for a good few years. The reception staff are always friendly and greet you and I thoroughly enjoy the range of group fitness glasses (eg Zumba, body balance, Body Pump, Body Combat, Body Attack, Pilates reformer classes etc). There is a pool, jacuzzi pool, sauna and rock climbing wall as well if you are regular users of this. Even though I work in the Northern suburbs and live 20 minutes drive away from the Bourke St gym (35-40mins in peak traffic), I try my best to come here as I really value the excellent instructors that Virgin Active hires. I also appreciate that they are trying to improve all the time and will regularly send out client feedback surveys, and also have recently created a star-based response system to provide feedback on classes. They also take on feedback to provide 'masterclasses' and other fitness/health options to members too. It is a busy gym and getting more popular- but given all of what I've highlighted above,it's no wonder as it really is a 'health club' and I thoroughly enjoy coming here :D!

Extremely overcrowded gym. Couldn't exercise on air bike that I have originally visited the gym for because of the class, which looked more disorganised than a subway station in peak hours, couldn't even tell there was a class. Staff is trying to ignore you, not providing essential information about the gym to the visitors on their first visit. Ruined my workout. Very disappointed.

Really happy with the equipment and cleanliness of the place. V cafe is one option to treat your self before and after your work out with all protein supplement that your body needed. There's lots of classes to choose from, to alter your need. They also have a swimming pool.

Very helpful and friendly staff however, I don’t see the appeal for the price point at this gym. Collins street, I can see the appeal

You know, these guys are always lovely and welcoming. Whether its for a workout or a casual swim in the pool, theres great facilities and friendly staff. Its quite a pricey gym but they put on a hell of a lot of classes for members. Theres always something to do in the gym. The instructors are really professional, give lots of options and are inclusive to everybody who comes to the classes. I really think they care that you have a good time whilst working out. Its annoying that sometimes the spa has been our of action quite a bit but these things happen. It also must be really hard to adapt to the ever changing covid rules but they do it seamlessly. They’re a credit to the virgin brand! The only piece of constructive feedback id give is that it would be great if you could sell reusable bottles in the gym. Or have some paper cups or something for water, because i just can’t bring myself to buy a bottle of Voss. I think you could sell t-shirts and running shorts as well tbh, make a bit of cash from us forgetful folks and i’m sure they’d be good. :-)

Great gym! Friendly staff and it has all the equipment that any athlete needs... plus lots of space (with the exception of the peak hours after office)

The gym itself is fine but I would caution to avoid due to the membership/sales team here. I only wanted a short term stint but they "convinced me" I needed to signup fully in order to do so. Long story short I found my account still active months later and they refused to rectify it. Despite clear data evidence that it was a misunderstanding and I never used the gym thereafter. Aka they were happy to keep a significant amount of my money they had zero business earning. This isn't a small gym either, they have the resources and size to rectify this but didn't. Hence my leaving this review. Reading other reviews it seems I'm not the only one that's had a bad experience with this group.

I am appalled at how poorly managed this place is and how laid back the staff is. I had booked a yoga class on ClassPass for 9 AM on a Saturday with Arti. Unsure if the instructor who was actually taking the class was Arti, but she turned away five people and took the session with only two people in the class. Her reason? Cause we didn’t enter the class before start time (9 AM). I reached the place at 8.45 AM and the receptionist took her sweet time to give us forms to fill. Eventually we reached the class at 9 AM after filling a million forms and being asked to wait in the lobby to let other members go first. And surprise surprise, the Yoga instructor thought thought it was too late to attend the class AT THE START TIME and turned everyone away. Was the instructor just lazy and didn’t want to teach a full class? It surely seems like that. My 12 ClassPass credits are gone and so is my money. And no attempt has been made to fix it for me and refund my credits. What a sham, so so disappointing .

I really missed this gym. I had to cancel it as I had to move to the Eastern suburb and the current gym I go to (NextGen) is pretty poorly run. They don’t have as many classes and most importantly their customer service is no where near what i had experienced at VA. If they open another club in the Eastern suburb in the future I will definitely rejoin!

Do not join this gym - Unless you enjoy basic, repetitive group classes and very bored trainers. And frequent periods of no hot water for your shower (Ice showers all around!) The recent introduction of the Sydney head office Dictatorship run programs has ruined all things great about the grid classes here. With this roll out the trainers have lost all ability to create enjoyable, variation within their programs. Leaving you with an equally bored/ disinterested trainer who themselves lose track and interest in the class. The vibe of the class is what I loved most (why I enjoy group classes), but it’s hard to motivate yourself when the atmosphere is shrouded with dissatisfaction and dullness. True to a dictatorship all member feedback on this change has been ignored, hence this review as a last resort. Give us back our old gird classes, it’s what we in Melbourne enjoy/ want! Please leave a comment if you have any inner-city gym recommendations with a great Hitt work outs to try! It might be time to leave this gym to find somewhere better.

I have been a member at Bourke Street Virgin for about a year now and unfortunately will soon be cancelling my membership. I am not one to leave reviews but I have actually provided feedback to Virgin Bourke via email... no reply. I used to enjoy the Grid training classes but over the past couple of months they have changed. The trainers seem uninterested and I can tell they are not created by the trainers because they are often confused when explaining the class. The spa is always only luke warm (feels like the lap pool temperature) so you honestly just get cold when you sit it. The boxing studio compared to Collins street is in dire need of an update. They only put out about 8 freestanding bags so you are always sharing with someone and sometimes only getting half the workout. I understand that these are only small annoyances but given I am paying $90 a fortnight... it's just not good enough.
