Stunning gardens, very worth a visit while in Melbourne. A beautifully serene idyll so close to the CBD, perfect for a chance to relax. Very well maintained pathways are very accessible, perfect for a walk for anyone. Provides plenty of peaceful spots to stop for a picnic or to sit on a bench and read a book. A must see.

A gorgeous slice of natural beauty right in the heart of Melbourne. Free to visit and explore to your hearts content. Magnificent views of the city to be found all throughout the gardens. Highlights are Fern Gully, Long Island and the Sensory garden. Whilst walking through the temperate rain forested Fern Gully it is hard to believe you are in the middle of Melbourne. One of my favourite places to walk and explore.

The Royal Botanical Gardens is beautiful on a normal, for a good work in a diverse surrounding. The unique and beautiful plants that you can see here are really special. This is a great spot for walking, exercising, having a picnic with friends and family or just relaxing with a book. Currently (July 2022) they have an amazing light installation called Lightscape. It's running for 2 months in winter and you book time slots between 5:30-9pm. Entry is $35 for adults, there are discounts for seniors and children. The lights on the trees are really beautiful, I would highly recommend going.

If you have time for to see only one of Melbourne's many attractions, make sure to visit the Royal Botanical Gardens. Absolutely fantastic. Even on a stinking hot day, as it was when I visited, there's plenty of shade and cool gullies to keep the heat at bay. I particularly enjoyed the Australian native forest trail and the fern tree gully sections, both of which were brilliantly presented. The cafe/restaurant was also very well done. All in all, the Botanical Gardens was the highlight of my visit to Melbourne. Loved it.

I know that this is already a very popular tourist spot, but I still believe that it is understated on how amazing this park is. The gardens are really pristine and picturesque with a really amazing atmosphere. There were lots of people having picnics and many facilities to enjoy. There's a kids garden and different themes of gardens. Definitely make this apart of your time if you're visiting melbourne. :)

Amazing botanic garden with wide variety of plants! Great for jogging, walking, picnicking, and simply doing nothing Sitting next to shrine of remembrance, it’s easy to get to from city center of Melbourne. The botanic garden also connects to two other gardens and the river bank of Yarra River. It’s a strip of green space in an urban area. I visited during December, but still surprised at how many flowers blooming at that time. You can also find bunch of birds. I spent two hours there and each corner was different from others. If you really want to check all different sections, it might take you 3 hours. The staff there is also nice and helpful. They actively offered help when I was checking map. Really feel good about them! The visitor center also has clean toilets. You can also get beautiful map there.

The Botanic Gardens in Melbourne is one of the most amazing gardens in the world. We spent the day here and wandered around only a small part of it. As someone born and raised in Melbourne, and having walked around our hundreds of times in my life, it's still amazing and one will never get sick of looking around. I'm sure you won't be disappointed when visiting the gardens and there are so many species of plants here its amazing.

Visiting the Royal Botanic Gardens, and I must say it was an absolute delight. From the moment I arrived, I was enchanted by the beauty and tranquility of this stunning oasis in the heart of the city. The gardens are truly a nature lover's paradise. First of all, the location is fantastic. Situated in a prime spot within the city, the gardens are easily accessible and well-connected. Whether you choose to drive or take public transport, getting there is a breeze. Speaking of parking, there are ample parking spaces available, making it convenient for visitors. As I strolled through the gardens, I was amazed by the variety of walking routes available. There are well-maintained paths that take you through different sections, each offering its own unique charm. From the vibrant flower displays to the peaceful lakeside views, every step revealed a new and delightful scene. The surroundings of the Royal Botanic Gardens are simply breathtaking. The gardens are nestled amidst lush greenery, providing a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. The city views from certain vantage points are awe-inspiring, offering a beautiful contrast between nature and urban life. The gardens are truly family-oriented, with plenty of activities to engage children of all ages. There are designated picnic areas where families can enjoy a leisurely lunch surrounded by the beauty of nature. Kids can also have fun exploring the gardens and discovering the various wildlife that call this place home. As for the wildlife, the Royal Botanic Gardens are teeming with fascinating creatures. I had the pleasure of spotting colorful birds, butterflies, and during my visit. It was a true delight to be so close to nature and witness the harmony between flora and fauna. If you're looking for a romantic outing, the gardens have an undeniable charm. With its picturesque landscapes, fragrant flowers, and secluded corners, it's the perfect place for a romantic stroll or a cozy picnic for two. The serene ambiance and natural beauty create an intimate setting that's hard to resist. One of the best things about the Royal Botanic Gardens is that it's completely free to enter. This stunning slice of paradise can be enjoyed without spending a penny. It's a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in nature's wonders and indulge in the beauty that surrounds you. The the Royal Botanic Gardens is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. Its location, stunning surroundings, accessibility, and abundant natural beauty make it a top choice for nature lovers, families, couples, and anyone in need of a relaxing and rejuvenating experience. The gardens fascinated me. I spent two weeks staying in south Yarra, and visited the gardens every day. The botanical specimens, the birds and the park and cityscapes were all captured by my camera. Great coffee and cafes nearby. An absolute gem. I even ran the Tan track, which encircles the gardens.

These extraordinary gardens are one of the prime must see things in Melbourne. The site is beautiful and the range of plants and their siting and presentation is exceptional. We simply did a self directed early Spring tour here this morning. We just got a free map from the entrance and spent the most pleasant few hours wandering around and taking in the sights, sounds and smells. All we wanted to do was spend more time and enjoy the inspiring surroundings. My favourite areas were around the beautiful lake especially the various bamboo varieties and some of the shade plants. But, there are so many other beautiful areas here including the dry areas. We made a promise to each other on leaving this amazing garden. One day we’ll stay at a nearby hotel so we can make several trips to this special place and experience the garden at different times including early morning and early evening. Don’t miss this place. It is truly inspiring

The Royal Botanic Gardens is one of Melbourne's must-see destinations and is justly world famous for its plant collections and research facilities. Entry is free to the gardens. The South Eastern corner of the gardens, closest to the Anzac Memorial also has the National Herbarium, the historic Observatory, an exhibition venue, the Children's Gardens, a Café/Restaurant, Souvenir and Gift shop and many other features of interest. You can easily spend several hours in just this corner of the gardens. One day is probably not enough to really go through all of the trails and zones the gardens have. There are extensive walking trails, mostly paved but there are some that are firm dirt and more like a winding bush track. Lots of signposts and "you are here" maps are sprinkled right throughout the park, along with regular toilets, benches, water fountains and shady places to sit. The landscaping is stunning, artfully designed with constant new vistas opening in front of you each time you come around a corner. Even on extremely busy days like when we visited on a fine weather, long weekend, it's easy to find a pretty shaded spot to picnic or a bench to rest on. Many sculptural installations, small fountains etc are richly sprinkled throughout the park, mostly hidden away in little secluded alcoves and nooks alongside the pathways. The central lake is the highlight of the park and has the Terrace Restaurant and function centre which is usually very busy and a great place to have a break and a meal or snack. There is public parking right around the perimeter of the park, some free unlimited, some paid with 1, 2, 3 and 4 hour limits. The whole precinct, Botanical Gardens, Yarra River Bank, Kings Domain, Anac Memorial, National Gallery is extremely popular right through the year and parking is ALWAYS an issue. Definitely a must see, no matter the time of year!

A serene green sanctuary in the heart of Melbourne! The Royal Botanic Gardens have been a source of joy to locals and visitors for more than 175 years. The horticultural displays are always impressive. You can also learn much about Melbourne and its history by stopping at the many statues and monuments placed around this 38 hectare oasis. Here are a few photos from a recent visit.

Amazing place! Went on a day with amazing weather (sunny, not too hot). Highly recommended for anyone who wants to take a nice walk too, there's lots of shade and trees, which makes it great even if it's sunny. The views of the lakes/ponds makes it very pretty. Had a picnic at the picnic spot and it was the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Prior to lockdown 6.0 I did one of their daily free tours and was very enjoyable and full of knowledge. The tour consisted of 4 people which is the perfect size and our guide was a passionate professional. It went for 2 hours (longer then the listed time of 90 mins) but you can leave anytime. Would recommend bringing some water and comfy runners on the day. Highly recommend the free tour to explore the wonders of this garden.

One of the most beautiful gardens I've visited, and there is always something new to see! This is a great place to visit if you are interested in exploring the different plants grown around the country and the world. It is dog friendly, so bring your furry friend along. There are cafes and many places to sit down for a picnic or if you just want to sit somewhere quiet and enjoy a book. Put some comfortable shoes on, bring a walking buddy and explore! There is plenty to see so set aside a good amount of time, or even better, cover it all across many days!

An absolutely beautiful treasure of a garden in Melbourne. There’s so much plants, scenery, lakes and cafes to explore, relax and sightsee in and around this iconic Melbourne landmark. The flowers, plants and lakes are well maintained and the footpaths are pram friendly. You could spend an entire day here and not even finish the checking out the whole garden. Not to mention the Shrine of Remembrance is nearby which you can get an amazing view of Melbourne CBD.

A beautiful green treasure located in the city. It’s vast and very well maintained garden with a picturesque view. Good for family picnics, Kids friendly and for a stroll. Very calm and relaxing place. There are beautiful lakes and coffee shops inside the garden. Tram stop are also located close-by. The park has multiple entrances. There is also a children garden at the entrance of botanical garden. We absolutely love to visit it. Public toilets are all around the park.

Absolutely beautiful. It has been the highlight of my trip to Melbourne. We caught the tram from the city and got off at the Shrine of Remembrance and had a short walk to the garden where we had a coffee before starting to explore. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly and the grounds were immaculate. My camera ran out of power and time absolutely flew. I will be going back tomorrow. Please enjoy some of my photos.

Absolutely love these gardens. I just moved to the area and so overjoyed to find these just around the corner from me! There is so much to see and it is so well kept, immaculate and clean. Also very quiet and easy to access with tram or bus. You can come here to enjoy a nice walk, to relax in the open space or to see the different plants and flowers. I haven’t seen the light show yet but also looks worth booking in!

Peaceful walk through the gardens. Came on a Saturday afternoon - note places like the shrine of remembrance and visitor centre close at 5pm. Otherwise beautiful gardens, lot of picnickers, some areas like the Australian forest walk felt like you were being transported somewhere else. Very well maintained. Spent 3 hours walking around but even a short or long walk would be enjoyable. A lot of bathrooms, mostly paved paths and lots of places to sit in shade and enjoy the view.

Absolutely beautiful gardens and immaculately kept. Staff were helpful, friendly and welcoming. The man at the infecenter even remembered my name and said hi when he drove by in a buggy hours later. I went on a free tour with Jenny who has so much knowledge about the history of the gardens and plants of all kinds. She has such a lovely warm soul and this really contributed to the quality of the tour. Perfect for families to have a day out with friends and families. Plenty of space to social distance and get some sunshine too!!

Gorgeous place. Cleverly constructed, accommodating miles of secluded alleys and paths on a relatively small patch of land. Beautiful lakes and herbs garden. I December linden trees are blossoming and the whole place smells divine. Best visited closer to closing time after work. Not crowded, lots of birds feeling safer and behaving freely. If you have pollen allergies take precautions, too many exotic blossoms might cause you worries.

Was here on a sunny Sunday afternoon and I love it. You could do a day trip nearby to many different scenic spots which I did as well I spent around 3 hours here and I would say good options are limited to one cafe, so bring your own food and drinks. This place is also suitable for people who wants to walk their dogs or bring their kids. So I would definitely love to come here again. Be careful of wet weather

Absolutely beautiful. Recommend even if u just have an hour of if you have all day. Lots of bird life to appreciate here as well especially by the water; we saw a cormorant, wood duck, swamphen, coot, magpie, noisy miner, cockatoos, moorhens etc. Also great for running or walking. Plus it's free!

These gardens, whilst pleasant enough, don't have much variety or density of plants. There's no clear structure to the layout, with a very small tropical plant greenhouse that looks quite neglected. If you like big open green spaces near a city fair a nice walk, this is just that and the great thing is that it's free and has a couple of cafes. If you are expecting a botanic gardens typical of other major global cities, rein in your expectations.

Beautiful vast green space in which you can take a stroll through the luscious trees and grass that this garden has to offer. If you get hungry, have a bite at the cafe with a view of the lake. This is a wonderful place for all - children, grown ups, elderly, and a nice place to see different plants and flowers. A visitors Centre with toilets and a cafe.

Paddock and over the Morell Bridge to access the Gardens at Gate A. There are about another nine gates spread around the perimeter so it should be easy to enter the gardens from any direction. There is no admission fee. It's a lovely peaceful place for a wander on well maintained paths - pick up a leaflet at the gates, follow the signposts or just go where the mood takes you. There are a few places where we were looking across the greenery at the cityscape in the background however it's such a large place that we didn't hear traffic noise. There are nooks and crannies to explore too - we had a walk through a forest trail in Fern Gully at one point, the herb garden and the tropical glass house (where it was a bit humid to hang around too long). Near the National Herbarium a pile of timber is all that is left of a gigantic tree where generations of people had gathered for photographs in the past. The memory may live on. However there is no shortage of other trees and plants of all sorts from around the world. There was not a lot of colour - perhaps just a seasonal thing - but I guess it may just be a place to appreciate some green space in an otherwise busy city. The cafe located alongside the Ornamental Lake looked nice enough but we were not too impressed by the products we bought. It was a shame because it was a nice setting. We exited eventually through the Observatory gate which leads to another nearby, unlikely attraction, The Shrine of Remembrance.

We spent the best part of a day wandering through the RBG in Melbourne when we were staying in the city on our recent trip to Australia. And what a simply amazing place these gardens turned out to be. In fact, they were one of the highlights of our entire visit to Australia. So many lovely, different, themed areas. Stunning, colourful themed gardens areas; wooded areas with wonderful trees (we specially liked the Australian Forest Walk and the Fern Gulley); spacious, open, beautifully kept lawns; some wonderful wildlife; lakes with so many different views. And all a peaceful oasis in the middle of the busy city. Our favourite area was the Lower Yarra River Habitat, which we just had to walk through twice! Plus a lovely restaurant serving great coffee and delicious food. We absolutely loved it here.

(Translated by Google) I often run through these gardens recently. When I want to know a city in a short time, I want to know its smell. But it would be better if there was enough time. I really like the charming trails by the water and the paths that pass through the middle of various plants. This is a beautiful and well-maintained garden, I hope to come back next time. The garden is well laid out and well tended. I've been multiple times and with the diversity of plant life there is always something new in bloom. On top of that, there is plenty of space on paths and in great fields to walk or relax and soak up some sun.

A sensory garden by the river that is surrounded by waving bamboo. Great gift shop and amazing book selection. Friendly and helpful staff. It is Peaceful and gorgeous.

So much diversity through the gardens. A lot of care and maintenance involved in keeping them look g amazing. The park can get plenty of activity. An enclosed children section. Plenty of space to have a picnic, or just lie down on a blanket and read a book. So close to the city, easy to access via transport or metered car parking along the tan. If you park early on a Sunday it's free. Cafes, public restrooms are available. A place you can spend hours.. Enjoy

A beautiful park with a huge variety of plantings to see. I walk it often and still feel like I’m somewhere different each time. It’s been a treat walking through the environments of other countries during the long lockdowns.

One of the best parks (if not the best) parks/garden which Melbourne have to offer. So much happens in this section as well including the tan where locals and tourists soak up in nature while exercising ( especially running). I thought I would have left a review for this garden by now😬. During different season and in different lawns etc they have art performances from live music to drama to circus. The plants they have is very unique and again have changing sections of them as exhibitions. One of the best spot to walk, picnic and soak up in greenery adjacent to Melbourne CBD!

Huge, beautiful garden spaces with lots of variety and info boards to let you know what you’re looking at. Has multiple entrances and is a lovely scenic getaway from the urban hustle. A great spot for a family adventure. If you have small children I can highly recommend the children's area. There is a beautiful pond and lots of paths and plants to explore. Beautiful garden located right in the city among tall and highrise buildings. Perfect place to enjoy the sun with family and friends, to do some sport like jogging, or just walk around with nature all around. There is a cafe inside serving food and beverages. I highly recommended this place to be visited at least once 😊

If you go to the centre of the park, near the lake, it's very quiet and serene. Here in Melbourne, it's not easy to find somewhere quiet or to appreciate nature. If you want to go for a proper bush walk, you need to travel at least 800km to get away from the loud and dirty cars. Thankfully, we have the Royal Botanical Gardens.

  • 5/5 Mehnaz F. 1 year ago on Google
It is such a nice place to visit with friends, family or your loved ones. You can have a walk or just enjoy the beauty of the nature. The park is very nice and clean. There are enough garbage bins and also bathrooms here. You can find drinking water taps here if you are too thirsty. I had a great time here!

I loved everything about this public park. Situated within the city, this surely gave me a fresh look with the plants, trees, birds, and the overall landscape. Being in a place like this made me feel like walking is such a fun thing to do! Other comments: Affordable parking spots just outside the park, you can avail to ride a bus/shuttle while inside the park to roam around

The current Lightscape event at the gardens is definitely a not to be missed event! At every turn I was amazed and enchanted by what I saw. The gardens were transformed into a magical place of changing colours with background music that just carried you away. Because of all the photo opportunities along the way, the walk around the garden lake took approx an hour, an hour thoroughly enjoyed. Highly recommended.

LIGHTSCAPE at the Royal Botanical Gardens was amazing - the displays were breathtaking and vivid, with so much variety. The only drawback was that there were very few places to stop and rest along the way, which makes it difficult for someone with mobility issues to manage the whole thing. We could see the park benches but the paths were cordoned so we couldn’t access them during this event.

If you have time on your hands this park/garden is must to visit. It was raining off and on for our walk however it was still lovely. This time of year in Autumn the trees were in beautiful colour. Close to the Shrine too which is also a must

Beautiful garden along Brisbane River. Did a couple of morning walks through the garden as I was staying at a nearby hotel. High level of activities all through the day. The park features a great playground for kids and there are nice clean public toilets.

We did a free walking guided tour of the beautiful gardens. Been here many times over the years but the tour was an eye opener. Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly, we saw so much and learned a lot, yet so much more to see, and this is in winter! Free tours on daily, check the website and register. Ended with a yummy brunch at Terraces cafe serenaded by noisy birds.

The LIGHTSCAPE at the Gardens was amazing! The team behind the idea are marvellous. Highly recommend it to anyone, especially families. The food hall halfway through the exhibition, is a smart idea as well. Gives you a break and the children will love it!

The garden is very well maintain. We arrived toward the late afternoon so we couldn’t spend much time here. Please look at the open and close time first. The garden is big and has various type of plants for you to enjoy. It’s so peaceful and quite. There are space for you to relax and enjoy the well spent time here. At the front of the gate there is a gift shop where you enjoy shopping and there is a book section if you want to explore:))) do come and enjoy the time here :)

One of the best places for a long walk in Melbourne- solo or with company. Do check out the Shrine of Remembrance- it does not require any tickets. Go to the top of the Shrine for a majestic view of the city.

Royal Botanical Garden has so many varieties of flowers and other plants that we had not seen before. It's amazing how well these plants were maintained by the authorities. It was wonderful to take a walk along the park and relax next to the lakes.

Been here few times before 17 years ago, during that time it was already awesome and beautiful but now it's even better! Went this time with a free guided tour (please make a booking beforehand, see website for details) with our passionate and knowledgeable Bud as the guide. Many stories surrounding the special plants and trees and she'll show you the highlights of the season. Armed with a thick folder, to give a better historical and horticultural point of view, Bud was elaborate enough without being overboard and managed to keep the visitors focused and enjoyed. I highly recommend getting a guided tour even though you are welcome to come at anytime and use the park. There are multiple toilets, several interesting programs that are always on, like taking a cruise and children garden is something that your kids should have a visit and run around. There's a cafe with coffee and sandwiches in front of the main entrance (near the shrine of remembrance entry)

Beautiful place. The place is very large to go with little time, it is advisable to go with your family and spend the whole day exploring. You breathe a peace and quiet, ideal to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Best inner city garden of Melbourne The garden is free to enter and is highly accessible. It’s beautiful all year round and provides different sections, each has its own beauty and very inviting. They make up such a big garden that might challenge visitors to make their ways around (there are various signs though). I was surprised to see many different birds flying around! Just in the middle of the park, I could hear just nature sounds, like the winds and birds chirping. There are restrooms all around and they’re pretty clean. I enjoyed the small cafe with their ice cream. The souvenir shop also offers many well designed items.

This is such a nice place to go for strolling or even for a picnic. It is pretty big so be sure to wear comfortable shoes. I remember walking 13,000 + steps. We went there last May this year so the flowers didn't bloom much. It is free hence no ticket needed. There are just so many picture perfect views that I took loads of photos. Will definitely go back there hopefully before spring is over. :)

If you want some peace and nature and a very beautiful garden just outside the city, this is the place. It's quite big and has some small lakes and you can see many different trees and plants, native and from around the world as well. All year round is nice, but of course Spring and Autumn have the best colors. You can spot some nice birds as well and it's It's always free entry from sunrise to sunset!

Whenever I am in Melbourne I always visit these wind gardens. It is lovely to be able to walk around viewing different aspects of the lake and to look at the many varieties of plants. There is also a well-stocked shop that is worth spending time in.

The Victoria Botanical Gardens are a lovely place to spend a few hours wandering around and learning about the local flora. The gardens are well-maintained and there is a good variety of plants to see, from the iconic coco de mer palm trees to the fragrant spice grove. However, I felt that the gardens could be improved in a few areas. Firstly, the signage could be better. There are some signs, but they are often small and difficult to read. It would be helpful if there were more signs that provide information about the plants, as well as a map of the gardens so you can easily find your way around. Secondly, I thought there could be more interactive exhibits or activities. The gardens are mainly just a place to walk around and look at plants, which is nice, but it would be good to have something else to do, especially for children. For example, there could be a petting zoo with some of the local animals, or a cooking class where you can learn how to use some of the spices from the grove. Overall, I enjoyed my visit to the Victoria Botanical Gardens, but I think they could be even better with a few improvements. I would rate them 3 out of 5 stars.
